Summary
When Monsters rise from the Underground, humans promptly lose the ensuing war. The Monsters quickly assert their dominance and humans are reduced to "Pets." However, while not quite paradise, various global conflicts have ceased as well as local concerns, like different crimes. Being a Pet isn't all that bad either, as there are laws put in place to protect you and Monsters rather treat you as a assigned worker than an actual slave. You still have to go to school until you are 19 and after that, you go to one of the Educational Pet Centers, where you learn all the basic rules of being a Pet, as well as choose a Specialization.
You've just graduated form the local EPC with a Specialization in Monster and Home Care, the most difficult, but impressive, Specialization a Pet can receive. As the only Pet in your class with this Specialization, this makes you an easy pick for your new Master, Sans. But, upon leaving, you notice the stares and whispers. Sans tells you that you are replacing a previous Pet that he and his brother had... "issues" with....
And it seems as if not everyone has moved on....

Bruce doesn’t know what’s wrong with his child, but he’s pretty sure kids aren’t meant to work like this.
From the day he had looked up into the tops of the circus tent and saw a frightened mirror image of a boy who had just experienced the worst day of his life, Bruce had instantly gone into emergency mode.
The Gotham PD had wanted to pass the boy off into the care of the circus. The circus had mumbled underneath their breaths about superstitions, about not having a boy like that with them, about not being able to handle something like Dick. So GCPD, not knowing what to do, had started talking about one of the handful of overburdened boy homes that handles a majority of Gotham’s unlucky orphans.
All the while, the camera lights flash bright and loud, wanting to know everything.
Bruce couldn’t let that happen.
Not then, not ever again.

Bruce is trying his best to protect the city that he loves. He doesn't know how exactly his Robins came to be- they're not fully human, not even at all. All he knows is that he wants to keep them safe.

Dick liked to think he had a pretty good handle on the whole ‘big brother’ thing by now, even if Tim still saw sleep as optional and Damian still got a little stabby when a hug lasted too long.
But then Damian’s other big brother comes to town, mysterious and red-helmeted and oddly familiar, and seems to want nothing to do with the Bats sans Damian. Damian is strangely close-lipped about his other brother's past, but Dick is determined to find out more about the Red Hood - he could always use more little brothers, anyway!

“Please, Master, tell me how to fix this. I want to make things right. How can I fix things?” Anakin begged.
“That’s not a fair question. Why would you ask me that? You can’t unmurder people. You can’t put them back together like a—an engine or a droid—”
“There has to be something I can do to make you forgive me!” Anakin said desperately. “You can’t just tell me you love me and then you wish you didn’t because I’m an irredeemable monster!”
“Well, that’s an entirely different matter, though no less cruel to think about.”
