What he does, for Thorfinn, what he has done for Thorfinn, is practical, incidental, or necessary—nothing more than damage control. Nothing more than a investment into a soldier that does good work for him.
Every time something happens, there's always an excuse, always a reason.
Of course he would have a reason- without one- why would he do anything?

Five times Askeladd wrote off something he did as some grand ploy to make Thorfinn a better fighter, or just a mistake, or something he did just for the hell of it.
One time where he has no excuse and can't just bullshit his way out of this one.

Summary
If Thorfinn hadn’t figured out that his father’s murder was a paid job by that point, he probably never would have. But now, the cat was out of the bag. Askeladd was sure someone in his little band of idiots would tell Thorfinn the information he wanted, and knowing Thorfinn, he would waste no time heading out to find Floki and challenge him to a duel.
And then… Thorfinn would die.
After accidentally letting slip that killing Thors was a paid job, Askeladd must navigate through Thorfinn's rage, a high fever, and his own complicated feelings on fatherhood, all to ensure that he doesn't end up losing the brat he's grown irritatingly fond of over the years.

Enter Askeladd--a Beatlemaniac foster parent who did sign up for this shit. He has a soft spot for the two gremlins he took home, even if they're a menace to society.
Ylva isn't a stranger to injustices. She just had to show that crazy local band to her little brother. What were they called--The Sex Pistols? Thorfinn's been yelling about anarchy and abolishment ever since. Mission accomplished.

Askeladd drank up the rest of his wine and tucked the bottle back into his bag, when suddenly something in the corner of his eye caught his attention.
It was a small body, bruised and battered, lying face first in the grass. Now, that in itself was nothing unusual, there were often corpses scattered around everywhere after a raid. The thing was... Askeladd knew this one. That blond mop of hair was all too familiar to him.
“You already dead, Thorfinn?” he asked into the night and was only met with silence.

Summary
The weather is cold, there's snow everywhere, not even close to how thick it was back in Iceland but still enough to do harm, Thorfinn is dizzy, he's half wet from stumbling into the snow covered ground, he's cold, he's tired, he's on the verge of crying, he just wants to go sleep in a warm bed just like in the old days again, but of course instead he has some old barn that barely looks like it could hold on another night, it's cold, he has a headache, he's cold, will this please just end already?
He's walking towards the village they've pillaged last night, he didn't want to sleep too close to Askeladd's disgusting selfish lap dogs partying, drinking and laughing all night, so instead of the usual barn he wandered off into the cold woods, what a big mistake, he probably would've gotten a smaller headache than this if he just slept in the barn.. He's too tired to walk anymore, he just gives up and falls on the snow covered ground a few steps afar from the door from the big house Askeladd took for himself last night.
Or... Thorfinn gets sick in the woods on a winter morning and is cared for by Askeladd himself.
This is actually me writing out of my own hatred for my own father figure

So I need the prince out of sight, out of mind, and preferably occupied somewhere not here."
