John says, “I see,” and then Dr. Betts inclines her head at him walks away. When he thinks about it, it even makes sense—naturally, Rodney McKay, notoriously unpopular man, wouldn’t run his department like a popularity contest.
(He will never admit it, but it’s kind of magnificent to watch Rodney hold court.)

It didn’t take long for John to fall asleep in his arms, but Rodney stayed awake, calculating how long they would have to wait for a rescue. If Ford, Teyla and Ronon had got away clean, it might be soon, but if they’d been blocked from the gate or driven into the hills or captured… well, check-in was after the imaginary feast, and a supposed good night’s sleep offworld, so Atlantis wouldn’t know anything was wrong until late Christmas night.
Hours went by, and Rodney knocked a quick getaway off the list. John slept on, his breathing more laboured by the hour. How was Rodney supposed to know how bad it was?
