Gasps erupted across the square, then the world seemed to hold its breath. Arthur froze.
Daniel went pale, sitting rigid on the dais, his hand gripping the armrest until his knuckles shone white. Parker, standing beside him, drew in a sharp breath, eyes wide.
Faroe wriggled, whining softly. “Papa? What’s—”
Arthur’s mind became a storm, each thought jagged and frantic. Bella can’t go. She’ll die. She can’t survive this. Faroe needs her. Not her. Not her. He couldn’t process the murmurs, the gasps, the shuffling of feet. Everything became a blur of panic, a single, overwhelming truth.
Before he realized it, before he even considered the mechanics of what he was doing…

Kayne winks, as he goes to hold Oscar's hand.
They're slightly sticky from blood, but so warm, against Oscar's cool calloused right hand. He looked at Kayne, who got down on one knee similar to a marriage proposal, and gazed into Oscar's eyes.
"Please say yes, Oscar."
Oscar looked down at the man's face who was speckled with blood. There was the obvious, sane answer, of course. Oscar should say no. Say no to all of this, and cast out the man in front of him.
But…
God, he was curious.
How did he know so much about him, about Arthur?
Oscar sighed, and went against his better judgement.
"Yes."
Kayne smiled, squeezed Oscar's hand, and stood up.
"We're going to have so much fun."

Yellow wakes; a miracle in and of itself, because Yellow has never once been felled by sleep. Something clings to his mind the way a dream ought to, but no such visions remain. Yellow is forgetting something—this he knows—but the exact shape of the memory eludes him.
Thin, long-fingered hands push him from snow that does not want to let him go. Those hands, with blood-caked nail beds and an elegance known only to mages and magicians, wipe the wetness from his face in a manner befitting chamber servants. A mechanical, business-like attitude, neither wasting nor wanting for effort. Flush with cold, those hands then wring themselves into a tattered cloak of green. The cloak—though Yellow is generous to call it that, considering its ratty condition—did not belong to him.
The movements, though a comfort, are not Yellow’s. Neither are the eyes that he is looking out of.

Long ago and far away, the world fit in a neat little box.
John’s life was charmed (in his opinion, at least), with days of play by the stream or in the workshop, racing father’s sleighs in winter and flirting with pretty workers in the mill. It was fun. His older brother Yellow was the responsible one, anyway—John was, he’d learned early on, “unplanned,” and so wasn’t expected to do anything.
Well. He was expected not to do things. Not to get anyone pregnant, not to steal from the till or stores, not to make a laughingstock of father’s name in town or with traveling merchants. Easy. John was careful in bed, had a big enough allowance that he didn’t need to steal, and he both tipped well in town and made friends with merchants. People trusted Yellow to deal with the hard things, but people liked John, and that was even better.
Yes, indeed, life was charmed, sweet through and through like warm honey-cake. At least, until his father died.
