Rated M for violent, explicit sexual, and medical content. This is plotty romance; sex to further the plot/develop characters, rather than the plot being for the purpose of getting to the sex. Chapter notes will attempt to identify sex scenes and triggers in advance. This is a dark and dangerous era with some traumatized characters who definitely hurt each other (both intentionally and not), but there is also a lot of fluff and humour. There is a scene in which a character doesn't know how to communicate withdrawing sexual consent; otherwise no non-con.

This entire story is based "about 1000 years ago", when Yamamoto's school was started, and Kyouraku and Ukitake were attending the Academy. It had lots of sword play, but it also has a very sweet shonen-ai sort of romance, which is denied by Kyouraku, between the two Academy boys.
This is an account of how Ukitake and Kyouraku got their shikai at the same time, so that no one could tell which one got it before the other, as Yamamoto told it. It's also got the beating that Yamamoto gave them, and more about what Soul Society was like back 1000 years ago. It has some historical facts in it, but is not entirely historically accurate. It also deviates from canon and from Unohana's origins. Please accept my apologies for any inaccuracies. Incandescens is my beta for this series, without her, this would not exist.

the breadth of research, artfully used, and the depth of understanding of both traditional East-Asian (and, specifically, Japanese) culture & its historic precedence is AWE-INSPIRING.
a richly detailed, solemnly emotional and outstanding illustration of Soul Society as Bleach fans SHOULD envision it: quintessentially Japanese, rooted in military dogma, and ANCIENT.
easily the best work i have ever come across in the Bleach fandom, definitely the most accurate, historically AND culturally (CULTURE. IS. KEY.), and my ability to recognise as much is Very Much Well Founded, IRL.
(Japanese society, especially historically, is not idealised and noble nor "backward" or stagnant; Japan has never had much use for nor attachment to Western expectations & "formality" is both courtesy and weapon: very, very few english-language works - fandom OR professional - actually understand the extent of Cultural Difference well enough to depict it respectfully, objectively, and ACCUTATELY)
i am not an authority, beyond historic elements, on military or survival scenario & culture but there is great respect for and research of these aspects also.
plus the imagery, especially used for Kyouraku (a poet & very, very visual character) is BEAUTIFIC.
