“Your brother has yet again done something with drastic cosmic consequences.” Sam squeezed his eyes shut, unwilling to see the hatred and disappointment on Dean’s face. “Samuel.” Death called and he couldn’t have rejected the request if he’d tried. “You would give up all that you have worked so hard to accomplish, all that you are, and live a subservient life instead?” Sam swallowed thickly, blinking rapidly as he tried to figure out how to say what he needed to say.“If it means none of my mistakes happen, all of those lives saved,” Sam couldn’t stop his eyes from darting to Dean once but was taken aback by the stricken look on his face. “Of course I would.” He turned back to Death who was gazing at him like a bug under a microscope. He guessed that’s what he really was to something as powerful as Death. The horseman nodded once as he stood.

Summary

Now it's 2009 and Dean finds Sam locked in a warded cell, guarded by the Campbells. They say he's running with demons, that they call him the Boy King. They say Sam's up to something big. Dean and Bobby confront a caged Sam who is cold and distant and far too knowing. While everyone tries to tell Dean that the brother he knew is gone, Dean is determined to find the truth. Along the way he discovers angels, broken seals, a runaway apocalypse, and visions of another timeline that burned up his brother's brain.

Sam swallows, he has to take a second to recompose himself. He can't go back to Dean dying every day, especially now that he knows what's doing it.

Or: Gabriel realizes nobody is going to let go of the one thing keeping them afloat, especially the Winchesters. He comes up with a plan to give Sam time to save Dean from hell and stop the apocalypse from happening. With the condition he learns to have a life outside of his brother. He doesn't plan to get that much involved other than hiding Dean for a year. Unfortunately the Winchesters have a way of dragging everyone into their problems once they meet you. Can Sam kill Lilith in time and can he accept that Dean can be his priority even if his life doesn't revolve around him.
OR: Unlike the show, I don't leave Sam undecisive on whether he wants to keep hunting or not. Also I give him friends. That don't die.

The world isn't as black and white as people may think. Humans could be good or bad, they could save or harm, and that's what others expect from them, to be shades of gray.
However, what about creatures that aren't human? What about them? Are they automatically expected to be evil? To only harm and therefore need to be hunted. Is that the only expectation from them?
After the death of Mary, that's the thought the Winchesters fought by, that every supernatural creature, no matter who or what they were, needed to be hunted, killed.
But, that's when both Winchester brothers were human, weren't supernatural themselves, and that's not the story that's being told today. Stories like that have been told hundreds to thousands of times; this story isn't like that.
No, this is the story of the oldest Winchester brother becoming supernatural and how the original story would change if he had power of his own.

Then he disappeared for god knows how long, leaving you to suffer, before Dean showed up. But as soon as Dean's hand was on the back of your neck, the way he used to stroke your hair when you were sick as a kid, it was pulled away.
The mastermind, the guy behind all this (whatever this was), had Dean by the back of the shirt with an angel blade to his throat. Ringing ruptured your ears and at first you thought you were going blind. But a golden glow seeped out from the man's body, spreading to the walls, leaving him a reverse silhouette in the shape of an angel. Music cracked the air like thunder as a loud, operatic hymn in a language you didn't know surrounded you from all sides. All you could tell was that something was terribly wrong and the angel was going to kill Dean, and you couldn't let—
That was when the white light broke through the dam, flooding through your body and leaving every inch of you in searing pain. You had to stop him, but all you could do was scream as bones snapped and something weighed down on your back.
