Summary
“What is the deal with you right now?” Steve asks after a long moment of looking at her like she’s an alien creature (and they know a thing or two about those).
She widens her eyes, shrugs sweetly, chews on her stirrer and sucks up the rest of her watered-down vodka.
“There’s no deal. You packed up your entire life and moved to Massachusetts without telling me- what’s your ‘deal’?”His mouth parts in shock and something so close to hurt that it makes Nancy’s stomach clench. With a contemplative tilt of his head he replies, “Last time I checked, we’re not friends, Nancy. That was something you decided, remember?”

Summary
It’s the middle of the night, a red glow is filtering through the curtains, and Nancy once again finds herself naked in Steve Harrington’s bed, watching him leave.
He’s sat at the end of the mattress, leaning to pull on his discarded socks, his shirt still missing in the rubble of the evening’s activities. If he knows she’s awake, he doesn’t acknowledge it, which leaves Nancy to stare at the expanse of his back- at the freckles she can spot even in the dark, and the angry marks she’s left against his shoulder blades.
The sight isn’t unfamiliar.Steve never sticks around for long these days. And wishing he would stay is a solitary, selfish pastime of Nancy’s.

Summary
“I wouldn’t’ve… I don’t think I could’ve gotten through it without you.” He’s not sure if he’s talking about the walkers or Carl or Judith or himself or some helpless combination of all of it.
She fixes him with a look that makes him falter. “You could,” she promises grimly.
Rick clicks his tongue. “I don’t know, you’ve seen me lose my shit enough times by now,” he chuckles, a feeble sound that only serves to sober him. “I couldn’t have held it together without you- you know that.”
She makes a small sound of disagreement but doesn’t say anything. Rick shifts closer, ducks his head to meet her eyes. “Michonne…”
“I’m fine,” she insists shortly. “I didn’t mean to scare her before- I’m sorry-“
“No, c’mon- that’s not what this is,” he cuts her off softly with a shake of his head, leaning down to once again meet her eyes. “Tell me what’s going on.”
___The events of 6x09 tear open old wounds for Michonne. Rick is there.

Summary
“Ignore Mister Buzzkill over here,” Richie announces, turning decidedly away from Carmy. “Cousin Michelle is dying to meet you, Syd, so if you don’t mind-“
“Fine, fine! As long as you’ve got your head above water in here?…”
Carmy nods approvingly, smiles. “Yeah, go ahead Syd. Yo, Marcus, think you could step in for a minute?”
“No doubt, chef.”
It’s all very familiar, cooking and bantering and teasing. But set against the backdrop of Natalie’s quaint suburban kitchen, it feels reinvented- examined through a new lens. Sydney’s starting to think that family might be the right word for it.
____Or, the first time Sydney really felt like part of the family.

Summary
They’re having Nat and Pete over for dinner tonight, probably the most adult thing they’ve ever done as a couple, and it’s got Sydney wound up to the nines. Carmy’s been trying to insist that it’s not as big a deal as she’s making it out to be but he’s been met with resolute disagreement at every turn. She wants this to be perfect- because they’ve been dating for almost six months now and it’s serious and this is a serious thing that serious couples do. Because this is the first time Nat and Pete are seeing them as Syd & Carmy, the couple. Sharing an apartment and cooking a meal and being together in a way that doesn’t revolve around The Bear. This is new territory, Sydney insists.
If you ask Carmy, it’s just his sister and her husband coming over to eat chicken alfredo. But he’s trying to be supportive, despite what Sydney might think about the pack of Marlboros tucked in his jeans. He’s got the nicotine gum in his back pocket to prove that he’s quitting, changing, trying- and that’s got to be worth something.

Summary
Today, though, Shane told himself he hated him. He hated that Ilya left. Hated that he said nothing. Hated that he’d made Shane feel disposable.
Sometimes Shane imagined flying to Russia, knocking on Ilya’s door, punching him square in the face and telling him exactly how much he hated him. But he knew the truth. Ilya would open the door. Shane would forget every practiced speech. And he would kiss him. Melt into him. Give himself over like he always had. Be fucked by him. And even if it was the last time they would fuck, at least he would know it was the last time this time.
Shane didn’t hate Ilya.
He hated that Ilya still lived in this quiet, unmovable place in his heart. It was the place that wouldn’t let him move on, wouldn’t let him heal, wouldn’t let him forget.

This story is canon through the 2014 Russian Olympics, then diverges. After Russia, Ilya ghosts Shane and never returns to the U.S., remaining behind to care for his father. Both Shane and Ilya carry the weight of their shared past into the present, set in June 2017.
