Chapter Text
Kirishima pondered whether or not this was a good idea as he tore through the left highway lane, listening to Bakugou try to murder Kaminari, and Mina singing 'I Want It That Way' at the top of her lungs. They'd gotten a mere five miles before this all broke out, and it really didn't seem to be stopping soon, so he just tuned it all out. Tuning Bakugou out was going to be harder, considering he was placed in the passenger seat, and the other three were squished in the tiny backseat, but he'd manage.
Being almost-graduated seniors, it was pretty self-explanatory that they'd be going on a senior trip. All of class 3-A was doing something or another with their own group of class-mates. Izuku, Uraraka, Tsu, Iida and Todoroki were going to the beach, Shouji, Tokoyami, Sato and Shinsou were going on a road trip to concert-hop, and Momo was taking Jirou to Italy. Then there they were, cramped in Kirishima's shitty car, rolling down to a campsite in the middle of nowhere. When Kaminari proposed it, he initially was pumped up. He hadn't been camping since he was a kid! They'd gotten everybody on board, with a little push and bribing for Bakugou, and two weeks later, they were packing and piling shit into the back of his car.
"Do you ever think with your fucking head? We don't even live in an area that has bears, dumbass." Bakugou was turned completely around in his seat, shouting at Kaminari.
"How do you know there aren't any bears?" Kaminari crossed his arms defiantly.
"I know how to read? Maybe if you weren't always fucking around in Mic's class, then you'd know too." Bakugou turned back around, propping his feet up on the dashboard. Kirishima thought he had a point.
"I know how to read too! I have better marks than even Mina in that class, anyways." Mina gasped.
"Why are you guys exploiting my failure! Make it about Kaminari again, Blasty!" Bakugou snorted.
"Besides, you should probably worry more about me killing you than a stupid bear, Sparky." Bakugou turned back around, but Kirishima put his arm up to block him from leaning towards Kaminari.
"Alright! From now on, we're not gonna threaten each other; looking at you, Bakugou." Kirishima grinned at Bakugou's scowl. "We're gonna have a fun, safe camping trip where we all come back alive, got it?" Bakugou crosses his arms and looks out the window. Kirishima was used to stepping in by now. Three years of babysitting Bakugou really sets you up to say stuff that you would never even think of saying. How many friend groups have to be reminded on the daily to not kill each other? He wasn't betting on very many.
"Can you guys believe we're graduating so soon?" Sero asked. Kirishima sighed at the subject change.
"No! It feels like we just met! I remember fighting at our first sports festival like it was yesterday!" Mina chirped.
"Yeah, I swear it was just last week that Bakugou was training to get his license!" Kirishima nudged him, earning a glare. Kirishima would be lying if he said he wasn't gonna miss this dearly. High-schoolers aren't given opportunities to be this close to their friends that often. He'd miss the movie nights with the whole class, and walking back to the dorms with Kaminari and Sero every day. Really, he's gonna miss being this close to all of his best friends, especially Bakugou.
Kirishima knew that if it wasn't for the dorms, he wouldn't be near as close with Bakugou as he is, and he's definitely super grateful for that. He had the complacency to call himself Bakugou's best friend, and if that wasn't enough to put a smug smile on his face every time he remembers it, then he didn't know what was. Kirishima supported him when nobody else did, and through support and trust, he's proud to call himself the only person who was willing to "tame the beast", per say. Unfortunately, though, that didn't really help his little first-year suspicions that his obsession with manliness went further than he thought. The signs were bright and clear but really, it was Bakugou who'd been the one to get it through his thick skull. After Kamino, he'd thought long and hard about why he was suddenly so fixated on his messy, explosive, blond-haired friend, and then it really sunk in. He's had a crush on his best friend ever since then. It was funny though, because as much as Kirishima boasted about manliness, he still hadn't confessed after all these years. It was a compromising situation, really. As much as he liked to repel the idea that Bakugou'd be set off by a confession of the sort, he knew it was likely, and he'd ruin the friendship that he'd tried so hard to build up over the years. It didn't upset him too much. He was able to suppress the feelings before, he sure as hell would now.
"Do you guys remember last year, when Kaminari accidentally shocked Aizawa-sensei when he fell asleep in class!" Sero laughed.
"I thought we all agreed to forget about that! You guys haven't seen Aizawa's wrath like I have, it was honestly traumatizing!" Kaminari whined. They went on like this for some time. Buildings were soon replaced with nothing but grassy hills and trees, and the cars around them started to trickle out until they were the only one on the road, save from a few passerby's. The rest of the trip was a whole lot of reminiscing, singing and laughing.
"Kirishimaaaa! I have to pee so bad, dude!" Kaminari cried from the backseat.
"Chill, Denk, we're almost to the campsite! Can't you hold it for like, ten more minutes?" He groaned, going silent once again. Once pulling into the parking spot for their site, Kaminari trampled over Sero, disappearing into the woods somewhere. Mina stretched loudly, and she and Sero exited together. Kirishima looked over to the passenger seat to a sleeping Bakugou, smiling softly and poking him a bit.
"Hey, Bakubro, we're here!" Bakugou sighed, face scrunching up slightly. "Time to get up!" Bakugou swatted blindly at Kirishima's hand.
"M'up. Stop." Kirishima laughed, and stepped out of the car, popping the trunk and started pulling stuff out.
"Hey, can I get a hand? We have like, a thousand things back here!" He shouted to any of the four others, Sero coming down to carry the tents up. They all made trips back and forth until the trunk was empty. Kirishima dropped the last of the bags, then walked down the hill to the car, where Bakugou was still sleeping. He tapped on the window again, Bakugou flipping him off with his eyes closed. Kirishima just smiled, then walked back up, where Kaminari had already ripped open the bag of doritos, and was offering it to Mina. He made his way over, taking a handful, and sat in silence with the group. They made light conversation, eating until satisfied. Kirishima brushed his hands on his pants and went over to the stack of tents. "So! Who's with who?"
"Bold of you to assume you have a choice on who you're sleeping with." Mina snorted. "Bakugou wouldn't be caught dead sharing with anybody but you!" Kirishima's cheeks burned. He laughed awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Yeah, I guess you guys are right." Kirishima set aside his and now, Bakugou's tent, leaving two. "So then, who's sleeping alone?"
"I could!" Sero chimed.
"As if!" Mina scoffed. "I'm not sharing a tent with Kaminari! I vote you share with him!" Mina points to Sero.
"What's so wrong with me? I've literally been getting shit on since we left!" Kaminari whined. Kirishima chuckled. He tossed the bigger tent at Sero, then walked over to an empty spot.
"Are you sure you'll be okay alone?" Kirishima asked, Mina snatching her tent from the picnic table.
"I'll be fine, you big baby! I took the same hero course as you guys!" Mina laughed, walking over to the spot next to Kirishima and placing the bag down. "Besides, I've got two big hunks of man-meat right next to me!" Kaminari fake gagged.
"You guys are exiling us to the other side of the lot? Rude." Sero walked over and dumped the tent all over the ground. Mina pulled out her phone and set it on the table, playing music while they attempted to set up the tents. Kirishima connected all the poles and set up his tent with ease, overhearing curses and faint 'that's not how you do it, idiot', from the two boys across the way. Kirishima was settling the top on the tent as Bakugou trudged up the hill with tired eyes.
"Good afternoon, sleepy-head!" Bakugou scowled, sitting on the table. "We already agreed on sleeping arrangements," Kirishima sat next to him, throwing an arm over his shoulders, "you're stuck with me!" Bakugou yawned.
"Hey, Kirishima?" He turned around to Sero, looking through the boxes on the table behind them. "Why are there only three twin air mattresses?"
"Oh, that's all I had. There's a double one, too." Kirishima sighed. "Mina can have one of the twins, but either you and Kaminari have to sleep on the double, or we do." He pointed at Bakugou.
"Nose-goes!" Kaminari shouted from where his tent was sketchily set-up. Kirishima scrambled to touch his nose, looking between Kaminari and Sero who were holding their noses. Then he looked down at Bakugou, who sat staring at the ground, zoning out. He bumped into him to get his attention.
"We get the twins!" Kaminari cheered, and Sero grabbed the two boxes. Bakugou looked at him, confused.
"Well, looks like we gotta share the double!" Bakugou furrows his brows.
"Huh? Why?" Kirishima laughed.
"We lost nose-goes!" Kirishima jumped off the table, grabbing the two left-over boxes, and handing the smaller one to Mina, who was sprawled out on top of the tent, looking at the instructions. Bakugou grunted in response. As he sat and blew up the mattress, he watched Mina struggle to put her tent up. "You need some help?"
"Yeah, probably." Mina laughed, sitting back on top of her tent to wait. Kirishima turned off the air pump, bringing it over to Sero, then helped Mina with her tent. He propped it up, hers being easier than his, since it's way smaller, then went back to situate his tent. He noticed the sky starting to get darker as he made his way down to the car to get the blankets, noting that he should probably start a fire soon. Hiking up the hill, he drops his blankets on the mattress, distributing the rest to the others. He laid the blankets down, and his trusty shark sleeping bag, also unrolling Bakugou's in the process.
"Hey Kami, why is there a random pole on the ground?" Sero picked up the long pole.
"Uhh..." They both faced their lopsided tent. "I dunno?" Kirishima laughed as he made up the fire, adding a few logs to the kindling.
"If this tent falls down I will literally kill you." Kaminari gives him a thumbs up. Bakugou comes over to sit on one of the benches by the fire, putting his hands out towards it. It was now almost completely dark out, the only light coming from the fire, and the setting sun. Kirishima sat down on the bench next to Bakugou.
"Having fun yet, Blasty?" He grinned at him. Bakugou shrugged.
"We didn't do anything." Kirishima leaned back against the bench.
"Yeah, but I guarantee tomorrow we'll do more stuff! You're gonna have fun, I promise!" Bakugou sighed. They sat in silence, only the faint noise of the air pump over where Mina was in her tent and the music present. Bakugou shivered, and Kirishima glanced at him. "You cold?" Bakugou crossed his arms.
"No." He scoffed. "Shut up." Kirishima only snorted, pulling his sweatshirt over his head, and handing it to him.
"Here. I was warm anyways!" Bakugou shoved it back at him.
"I told you, I'm not cold, asshole!"
"Your arms are betraying you, you've got goosebumps. Take it!" He growled, hastily snatching the sweatshirt from Kirishima.
"Jesus, fine! You're so annoying, you sound like my fuckin' mom." Bakugou grumbled, as he slipped it over his head. They'd both grown from how small they were as first years, yet Bakugou never seemed to catch up to him. Kirishima was taller and bigger than Bakugou, making him practically drown in the sweatshirt. He cursed himself for not thinking of lending Bakugou his sweatshirt before now, since the sight was so precious. Something about seeing the boy you love in your clothes is so grossly domestic that it basically made Kirishima melt. Bakugou coughed awkwardly with red cheeks, looking at the fire.
"Warm now?" Kirishima grinned at him, who glanced shyly back.
"Uh-huh." Bakugou still had his arms crossed in a low-key pout. Mina came and sat on the bench across from them a few moments later. She looked between them, then back at Kirishima, giving him a knowing squint. Mina was the person he went to first about his little crush, and still is the only one out of their friends to know. It's not that he doesn't trust Sero and Kaminari, it's just that he knows they wont be able to keep their mouths shut, especially Kaminari. Despite this, he reckons Sero had his suspicions. He's pretty smart like that.
"Get your tent ready?" He asked Mina. She nodded. Sero came over and stood by the fire, Kaminari joining not too long after. They talked a bit, but it was pretty obvious that they were all pretty tired, since they'd had a full day of school earlier, and Aizawa wasn't one to ease up on them, even if it was a Friday. Kirishima yawned, and stood up.
"Where are you going?" Kaminari asked with a mouthful of doritos. He broke into them again once he sat down.
"Bed, dude. Training was hell today!" He turned back around to keep walking. "Night, guys!" They wished him goodnight, and in Mina's case, sweet dreams. Once the tent was zipped up, he dug through his bag, throwing on some sweats and a long-sleeved t-shirt. He slipped onto his side of the mattress, laying the blanket on top of his unzipped sleeping bag. He tossed his phone on the ground, and sat in the dark tent. He listened to the crackling of the fire, and the four of them talking. He was half asleep when he heard the tent zipper. "Bakugou?"
"It's me." His eyes were still closed while he listened to the rustling of Bakugou beside him, until he finally laid next to him. "Scoot over." He obliged, back touching the side of the tent.
"I'm surprised you didn't throw a fit about sharing a mattress with me."
"It's not that big of a deal." Bakugou settled, and Kirishima finally opened his heavy eyes. "Kinda like training camp." He noticed that Bakugou was still wearing his sweatshirt. He smiled.
"Nice sweatshirt." Bakugou scowled, rolling so his back was to Kirishima.
"Shut the fuck up! It's warm, alright?" Kirishima snickered.
"It's alright, dude! I don't mind!" Bakugou hummed. They were silent for a moment.
"Night, Red." Kirishima smiled, then yawned.
"Goodnight, Blasty."
