Work Text:
Dear Father,
I have lived to see the cherry blossoms again. Although my eyesight is far worse than it was the spring after we won against Kibutsuji, the glorious sight of the Victory tree is seared into my memory.
I still visit it. Kochou Shinobu prepared a will and testament before the last battle; she left ownership of the Butterfly Estate to Kanzaki Aoi. Although the Corps was disbanded, Aoi renamed the Estate “Kanzaki General Hospital”, continuing the tradition of naming the place after the current owner. I go there for check-ups every few weeks. The Victory tree stands beside it, tall and proud.
Kuina, Kanata, and I are all still on this side of the Sanzu. In addition to being the eldest of your remaining children and the Ubuyashiki family, I am now the oldest person in Japan. Because of this I got to appear on television. Sometimes I wish it was Hinaki and Nichika, though. Perhaps they too could have conquered the curse.
Speaking of which, I’m sure you’re watching over our family. Now that a century has passed, I have children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. I had my firstborn at twenty-one, and I got to watch all my children grow up healthy. It’s wonderful. I’m glad we were able to lift the curse. I got to live a full, free life, and now there are plenty of children to run the family business and watch over the fallen Corps members’ graves.
One hundred and eight years is a long time to live. I am unsure of when, but I feel like I will join you soon. We’ll see until then or until my next letter.
Love,
Kiriya
