Work Text:
You were exhausted from overtime work that usually happens in the office. But for some reason, today was extra tiring, probably because of the stress levels the work has unexpectedly given you. Your back hurts, your headaches, as well as your feet, and you just want to go home.
But despite you being drained out of your body, the weather didn't want to cooperate and even had rain pouring out that you don't think you'll be able to run through without entering the train soaking wet. And getting wet is not so ideal when your body is giving up, it might end up with you in your bed for a week, unable to move. The forecast was wrong so you didn't bring an umbrella or anything to shield you from the rain but you can't really blame them, nature has a weird sense of humor sometimes.
You sighed as you looked at the sky, frustrated. Well, this sucks. The thought of you lying down on your bed and finally spending the weekend resting is blown away because of the rain. If only there's someone good-hearted to lend you an umbrella or even better, drive you home because the train would be the last one and you'll have to take the bus in exchange.
But of course, the latter is impossible. Sure, you had close friends, and some you can ask for favors but you can't ask them to go out of their way to fetch you, not with your sense of pride and timidness.
Times like these make you have second thoughts about moving nearby so you won't have trouble getting to and going home from work. You've finally decided to give up on hoping for something miraculous to happen in this pouring rain and went back inside the office building to get shelter from the rain and cold.
You took a seat in the lobby where people usually wait for the rain to stop, wait for someone, and whatever. But right now, it's only you here since a lot of them had already gone home earlier and had umbrellas with them. You felt so stupid and irresponsible as a working adult who's stuck at work because you believed someone says it isn't going to rain.
And look where that got you. After loathing and dissing yourself in your mind for a solid ten minutes, you finally raised your head and there you get a glimpse of Nanami Kento, your co-worker that is so stoic and almost unmovable like a rock.
Sure, you've seen him and worked with him, talked to him as well (only about work) but you never really thought about Nanami more than just that one guy at work. Why would you ever want to get involved with him? He seems so scary and mysterious, his small eyes and just his whole being intimidates you so you distance yourself from him most of the time.
Of course, you were wrong about that, again. Why is it that everything you choose to believe is always wrong? Is there something wrong with your mind or what?
"Hey, (L/N)," Nanami called out to you which surprised you. You didn't realize he was right in front of you because you spaced out due to being nervous in his presence. The way he called out your name is even monotone, sounding like he's about to start a fight with you in some ways.
"Yes?" You replied instantaneously and it got his eyebrows raising. The way he looks down on you just makes you want to bow down and apologize to him for offending him with your existence. Because the look on his face doesn't seem pleasant and you wouldn't want to get on his nerve. You couldn't even dare meet his eyes, you're looking at everywhere but him.
"Are you not going home yet?" You didn't realize that you had your eyes shut tight while waiting for what he had to say next. And hearing him say that got you surprised and confused. That's unexpected.
"Uhm, no, it's still raining outside and I don't have my umbrella." You answered, still nervous about what he had to say next. You were pretty sure you were going to get dissed as well about how dumb you are and stuff and you are prepared. You just wish he does it swiftly and merciful, like a bullet to the heart.
"I'll drive you home. Wait for me here." Nanami said before he left you there dumbfounded as you finally look him in the eyes. Maybe it was just a spur of the moment and it's quite dark outside and the faulty light on the lobby had an effect but he somewhat looked...handsome.
It's not like it's the first time you saw his face too. The first time you met him left a funny impression on you. Nanami wore this small and armless sunglass that was ridiculous and riveting at the same time. You've never seen anyone wear armless glasses before so seeing him wear that was something new.
You had also thought his eyes were small and round, almost like some cartoon features. Plus, he seems so mature already, you were wondering how would you work with him without uncontrollably giggling from time to time, looking at his silly appearance.
But then again, you were wrong. Nanami's eyes were surely small but it isn't round like small o's, and neither his pupil is. His eyes were small and deadly, narrowed as well and he doesn't look like he's getting that much sleep. There are no other words you can put to it as soon as he took the glasses off on the same day you met him and it made an impression on you when you two had met eyes accidentally.
It's irrational and immature of you to judge him just by his looks. Ever since that day, you had sworn to yourself to not make ridiculous assumptions about someone's appearance not unless you see their full appearance.
A car suddenly honked and that was the sign for you to get ready. You get your bag and stood up, walking out of the building. Ready to do a swift execution of opening the door and getting inside without getting wet which you had practiced in your mind in less than a minute, was absolutely shattered when Nanami got out of the car with an umbrella and walked up to you.
Million thoughts ran through your mind right now and one of those that shined among the rest is Nanami sharing an umbrella with you. Sure, the umbrella was huge but for one person only, not for the two of you. One of you has to get their shoulder wet if you're going to share it. And you, being the one given the favor of being driven home, don't mind being the receiving end of the rain with your shoulder. That's the least you could do for him since he'll be the one driving you home.
Again, you were wrong. It was dark outside for you to not notice that he actually has another umbrella in hand. He handed it to you as soon as he reached you.
"Here, walk carefully, it's slippery." Nanami was kind enough to warn your clumsy self. You bowed and thanked him plenty until he walked back to the car and entered. You followed him and went to the passenger's side while having his warning in mind. You've been nothing but right this whole day so surely, walking up to his car shouldn't be something you'd even do wrong.
Finally, you got inside without getting wet. The cold temperature from outside was soon relieved with the heat from the car's heater.
"Thank you for lending me your umbrella." You said as soon as you settled on the seat. You were debating if you were going to give him the umbrella or just let it rest on the floor.
"Sure, you can just put it at the back." He directed you and you surely followed, whipping to the back of the car, and since the car is small but small enough for the two of you and probably another three at the back, you had a whiff of his scent.
He smelled like a man. You don't really know how to say it but all you can say is he smells like how he looks like. He smelled citrusy and musky, a freaky combination if you think about it. Though it was just for a short while, that scent had made an imprint in your mind and surely, you'd want to know what perfume he uses or detergent.
Nanami's piercing gaze at you got you nervous and shaking yet again that you accidentally dropped the umbrella in the backseat rather than placing it on the seats covered with leather.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to." You panicked and waited for any sign of forgiveness in those fierce and judging eyes. You were still intimidated by him but something about him just keeps drawing you in.
"It's fine, just leave it at that." He said in a monotonous voice that doesn't even give you any hint of what he was feeling. You didn't want to be pushy and annoying so you just really leave it at that, not questioning his feelings as well though you wanted to.
You buckled up and soon enough, Nanami went to driving. Anxiety kicked in despite him driving the same route you take when you walk home. It was the easiest and fastest way to get home by walking for a few minutes and then a bus for half an hour.
"Uh...Nanami, do you know where I live?" You manage to blurt out and it sounds rather offensive, almost accusing him he's some kind of stalker getting confronted. But none was taken and he continued driving safely through the rain.
"Yes. We live in the same neighborhood and even share the same train at times." Nanami replied with no trace of sympathy or whatever that it's killing you right now. You can't tell if he's getting pissed so you decided to just nod and shut up.
"I can't believe how unaware you are of your surroundings. Good thing you haven't been in any accident." He teased and that was your last straw. You'd just rather walk in the rain and get sick for a week or two because of him. There's no way in hell you'd even live properly with that roasting playing through your mind every minute of the day.
"Oh, uh, I have." You admitted, embarrassed, of course. Striking a conversation shouldn't be bad with him and surely, you can tell that he's someone with a sharp tongue that only a few could handle. Judging by the way people come to him at work, you noticed a lot of people were shitting on him just because he was being honest and sometimes disapproved of doing tasks that are not in his job description. Which totally makes sense because who in their right mind would do something you're not supposed to? Probably you because your timidness got the better of you, afraid of saying no.
"As expected."
The pitter-patter of the rain enveloped the car and the windshield wiping every second is the only thing you rely on now. It's so quiet but it's alright for you, you're not the one to strike up conversations that much. But something's been poking your curiosity because this car that Nanami drives doesn't seem new.
"Nanami, why were you taking trains back then?" You asked like a kid asking just some trivial stuff.
"I'm not always in the mood for driving so I rarely use my car." He replied, not beating around the bush anymore. It's almost as if you were doing a question-and-answer portion.
If Nanami was good at something, that's ending the conversation right when he just started talking. It isn't that bad for you but you find it funny yourself because you can't help but wonder how would someone even want to become friends with him. Not that you don't want to but you also don't want to bother him in his own circle and rather want it to happen naturally than force it.
You just looked outside the window and let Nanami drive in peace without even realizing that you had already relaxed in your seat and drifted off to sleep.
"(L/N), we're here." Nanami woke you up and you were quick to stand up and even forgot the seatbelt that's been holding you back. The rain hasn't stopped yet and your flustered self didn't even notice it.
"Thank you so much, Nanami! I'll make sure to pay you back for your kindness. Bye!" You said in a rush before leaving the car and running for the front door, leaving Nanami dumbfounded because he couldn't even lend you an umbrella and send you off properly. He just sighed in defeat and let his hand down that reached out to you before driving to his own house that's just at least two houses away from yours.
You wanted to see Nanami. To thank him, of course. But you also don't want to because of the embarrassment you and he had brought upon yourself. It was so stupid of you to run out without even hearing him out.
You felt conflicted since you kinda promised him you'd thank him properly. Of course, thanking him formally isn't enough and aren't you too thick-skinned to do that so treating him to lunch is what you definitely mean.
But the silence in the car you two shared in the car last time got you bothered. You know that you aren't one to be all friendly and know some small talk so you're anxious about having to meet him and talk to him.
You overthink way too much and now, losing focus on things you were supposed to do so now, it leads to your doom.
"(L/N)? What are you doing?" A familiar monotone voice called out to you and that shook you to your core. You jumped as soon as you realized who it is and turned to face him properly as if you were caught by someone you were hiding from.
"Hey, Nanami..." You responded weakly, not making eye contact yet again but you can feel his gaze at you. Meanwhile, he, had his eyebrows raised, confused as to why you were acting like that.
"If you need some rest, go to the lounge and take a seat." Nanami instructed yet again like you were some newbie.
"No, I'm fine." You replied weakly and Nanami doesn't see any more reason for him to stay so he continued on his way to lunch, about to leave you on your own.
Since you were looking for him anyway, letting him leave like this and your anxiety convincing you that you look bad in his perspective, made you do the extreme; you grabbed the hem of his coat.
Nanami felt it so he stopped and turned to you, but as soon as you two met eyes, you got flustered again and started stumbling on your words.
"About last time, I wanted to say thank you. By treating you out, or something like that. But it could be anything other than that." Even the words that came out of your lips didn't make any sense and that made Nanami chuckle lightly. You were too in your head, getting embarrassed that you let an opportunity slip by.
"Sure, I'm off to lunch anyway." Luckily, Nanami isn't someone to make fun of you or make you repeat yourself. Though he has to say, you sure do have the worst way with your words.
"Alright then. Please lead the way." You said without looking at him once again and Nanami doesn't mind. He's striking you as someone so considerate with how hard you're struggling in communicating with him.
If only you weren't this affected by your timidness and anxiousness, all would be better. Plus, you definitely weren't like this when he drove you home.
Nanami looked down at your hand, still clinging to the hem of his coat. He didn't bother reminding you of it and instead continued leading the way just as you said. You never really let go until you two reached a certain bakery near the office building.
"We're here." He announced and that made you realize that you just let him drag you but with your consent because you just realized now that you've been clinging on to him the whole time.
"Oh, right. Let's go inside." You invited him and though he's more likely someone who knows the place much more. You glanced at him to see how refreshed he looks today. Of course, he had a formal suit on just like how a salaryman would look. He isn't wearing his glasses today which is starting to feel like a rare occurrence. Maybe the other co-workers had made fun of him so it became a one-time thing? You wish they choke on their food today and that their lunch isn't as good as yours.
You let Nanami order first since you have to think about yours. After paying for it, the slices of bread that you ordered were given and the both of you looked for the best spot to sit in.
He took a seat at probably his usual spot, by the window and at the corner. It's also the same spot you like in restaurants and fast food, the corner and by the window where not much sees since corners are usually covered with posters or sometimes, not.
"Nanami, thank you again for driving me home that night." You thanked him plenty enough that your fear of being annoying is now kicking in and the way Nanami looks at you doesn't help either but somehow, being with him doesn't make you feel that bad or uncomfortable. Just you being awkward and anxious is all that blows it away.
"It's fine. Just don't be afraid to ask for help from someone whenever you're struggling. You won't be able to move forward with things if you stayed that way." Nanami gave out a speech that got you more interested in him in some way. He speaks and looks mature, you can say he has grown into a fine man.
"Yes, sir!" You replied as if you were in some strict training. The way you suddenly said it right after you processed what he said for a few seconds while staring into his eyes, captivated by it, made him chuckle at your bizarreness.
And there you knew this warm, fuzzy feeling starting to develop inside you. The reason why you got so comfortable easily with him, why he seemed so attractive in your eyes, why everything he does, even the simplest things seem so effortlessly beautiful.
As for someone who doubts people a little way too much, you sure do fall so fast for someone.
"Nanami, are you headed home?" You asked him as you two finally walk out of the office, the night seemed too dark today so you made sure you walk to the station with someone at least.
"Yeah, I'm going to take the train." He replied, monotone voice and not even batting an eye at you but you don't really mind. Nanami talking to you is more than enough so you decided to walk along with him.
"Can I walk with you?" You asked, a little hesitant at first and Nanami finally looked at you, stopping in his steps. He looked down at you and had an eyebrow raised.
"Of course. We'll be taking the same train anyways." You looked up at him curious as to why would he stop just to look at you. You were actually worried you'd done something wrong and receive another speech just like earlier and you were bracing yourself for it.
But of course, you were wrong again and Nanami seems to be treating you lightly right now. It's not like you wanted to be treated harshly anyways.
"Thank you!" You said ever so gratefully and continued walking with him to the station. It's really quiet and you don't really expect much to come out from him as well. But what matters is the safety you feel around him. Sure, he might intimidate you at times with the way he looks, stoic and sharp, not even showing any hint of emotion on his face. But it's fine now, maybe he is like that because he knows how dangerous it is to look vulnerable in front of people so he had to put a tough look on wherever, whenever.
You know you can't rely on Nanami at every time of your life you feel anxious about going home, so you tried copying what he looks like. Eyes are really small and narrow as if it's judging your whole being. Also, to you, it looked like the muscles on his face were so relaxed that they drooped down and you tried copying it again.
Nanami noticed you do silly stuff with your face and he's concerned with what's going through your mind. Though you may seem oblivious about everything around you, he can say you still have a knack for making him think you've read her wrong.
Maybe you aren't so helpless after all.
He kept staring at you, while you kept on doing your best to copy his signature 'I don't give a fuck' look. Not until your eyes met and that's when you realize how much you've embarrassed yourself yet again.
"What are you doing?" Nanami asked, looking at you confused. You didn't realize you two stopped walking already and you copied that from him as well. You immediately stopped what you were doing since you were caught red-handed and let your head down.
"Nothing! Let's just go, we might miss the last train." You almost begged for him and Nanami's just doing his best not to burst out in laughter. Not because you look stupid with those kind of faces but because he guesses you might be doing those to copy him.
It made him think if he look as silly as you're trying to look right now. Did he look like that to someone, especially, to you? Not like he cares much about what others think but he didn't want to look that intimidating to you, at least. After all, you two are neighbors and coworkers, there might be times you two will need each other.
And as for Nanami who's more than a regular salaryman, he needs someone who can back him up.
The train ride was quiet yet comfortable. It wasn't that cramped so the two of you had the chance to take a seat, next to each other at that. The comfort was soon changed with awkwardness because Nanami kept looking straight at the window while you, you don't know how to act. Debating with yourself if you should strike up a conversation or just rest your eyes for a bit after facing the computer for more than five hours.
The latter sounded even better so you did and not even a minute after closing your eyes, you were already knocked out. Nanami didn't even notice it until your head rested on his shoulder. At first, he was a little bothered by it, not sure if you were doing it on purpose or whatever but his doubt fades away as soon as he see you deadbeat, sleeping on his shoulder.
He didn't want to move nor even breathe and it was such a hassle but he didn't mind it either way. You're absolutely tired and he doesn't want to be disrespectful to you. One time is okay, Nanami thought so with you being helpless and clumsy is still sitting on the line.
"I just hope you don't do this with everyone." Nanami sighed to himself, chuckling as he thought about himself getting roped into trouble again. Sure, he has a knack for trouble since his other job requires it but this kind of trouble is different.
And so, the two of you had started this beneficial relationship between you two. It feels like you're the one having more benefits rather than Nanami and it's starting to feel one-sided that you're getting shy.
"Nanami, are you sure you don't need help with anything or something you want me to do?" You asked the man who did nothing but adore the bread he had ordered.
"What do you mean?" Nanami still isn't batting an eye at you and you're still getting anxious around him, scared of stepping on a landmine, despite you two hanging around for weeks now. It's been that long but everything still feels new to you. Especially this whole taking lunch breaks with him, even short breaks.
"I mean, you always do things that benefit me more than you. Isn't it time for you to be the one to ask me for something?" You didn't waste any time anymore and got straight to the point. That's something you've noticed about him ever since you two started hanging out. In every small talk, he doesn't want to add any spice or whatever to how he talks. That's probably why he sounds so stoic and topics with him end as soon as it starts.
"You treat our relationship like a transaction. But, I don't think I have something that I need help, with yet." Nanami scoffed as he sipped some coffee and set it down, slicing the bread and taking a bite.
You don't know why but it hurt with his first words. A transaction? It's not like you're waiting for payment or whatever but isn't that what friends are for? At least, that's what you think of him. You really can't put a label on you two but maybe you two are friends.
"Do you– never mind." You were about to protest but it's absolutely pointless anyways. It's not like you know what's going through his mind anyways. But it's still sad that you were the only one thinking you two are friends.
Nanami watches you as you eat your lunch, playing with it rather. He wanted to scold you about it but he knows he had already hurt your feelings from what he had said. It was supposed to be a joke but you took it in a wrong way.
He sighs, hating his insensitivity. Nanami must've forgotten you are a soft, fragile type of person. Maybe saying jokes really aren't meant for him. Apologizing is something Nanami is very weak at and he can't really find the right timing for it so he gave up and thought about making it up to you instead.
End of the shift came and you were panicking to get your things ready to leave. You just finished the paperwork on the dot and you know that Nanami hates overtime, he becomes talkative, complaining about everything and blaming the delay starting from the work up to the management and lastly, the higher-ups. You wanted to laugh when that happened once as you two walk to the station but you didn't want to be the receiving end of his anger so you tried to stay quiet and join him in dissing the company you work at.
As soon as you put everything in your nifty bag, you ran out of the office and to the elevator to ride down to the lobby. You were tapping your foot since you can't wait anymore, probably Nanami as well so you started dissing the company in your mind.
You checked your wristwatch for every second until finally, you are at the lobby, still running out only to see Nanami patiently waiting by the chairs laid out there. Also, the same spot you sat on when you two had first officially met.
You were five minutes late and that's already something you should be concerned about. When Nanami got mad, it was just merely a minute and a half and he was already mad as hell. What more now with your five minutes? He sure does value time as gold.
Debating if you should tell him you're there, you gave up and walked up to him, slowly though because you're afraid of an earful that you might get from him.
"Hey, Nanami," You called out to him and he turned to you, the same stoic face, hands crossed and back relaxed on to the chair. Nanami doesn't look like he'll burst any time soon and that concerns you. He's like a volcano, waiting to burst any time.
"Hey. These are for you." He greeted and stood up, getting the white plastic from beside him, sitting there along with his suitcase. You were confused but you took it anyways.
"Those are your favorite snacks, right?"
"Yeah, it is. But, why? What's the occasion?" You asked and he just sighed, looking at anywhere but you. Nanami looks embarrassed but that got you even more confused yet interested.
"From earlier. You know, what I said at lunch." He admits and though he might not say it, you already know what he means. Nanami might be bad with words but his actions are definitely doing it for him.
Being with Nanami might be a handful at times but that's why you have two hands, right?
"Yeah, it's fine. Thank you." You smiled to yourself, trying to hide because things like this have way too much weight on you and it's making your heart swell.
"But how did you know my favorite snacks?" You asked as you look into the plastic, containing all your favorites.
"You kept on telling me about how delicious it is and every time we go to the convenience store, you'd always pick the same thing." Nanami said as you look so fascinated with him just doing the bare minimum.
"Um, wow, this is great, Nanami. Thank you so much!" You beamed at him and this is the first time he felt appreciated by someone at work and it feels very nice.
"It's nothing. Let's go, we might miss the train." He suggested and you followed him. Every night you two go home, walking to the station, it would be either too quiet or too loud since you have a lot in your mind that you needed to discuss. And Nanami is always down to listen which is really good and helps you lots at work.
From all the times you two have been together coming home from work, Nanami might know you already like the back of his hand with the way you just tell him all about your very existence. But on the other side, you don't know much about him other than he lives alone, is smart, and has quite the anger issues and other trivial stuff.
It's not like he's obliged to tell you some personal stuff about him, you were just too talkative that even the most important things just slip out of your lips like a waterfall. But it doesn't matter, all that matters is that you're honest with him.
Nanami called in absent today and you're pretty much on your own now. Sure you've had friends at the office but not that close to share lunch with. You're a little too anxious to be with other people and that's something you're going to face today.
It's been a few months of you being with Nanami almost all the time. You two had gotten close that he even goes out of his way to accompany you somewhere. It's safe to say that you two are close friends now and even though small talks are still hard, there's still comfort and security between you now.
"Hey, (Y/N), come join us!" One of your co-workers, Naomi, called out to you. She's been nice to you ever since the first day and you shared a few breaks until Nanami came into the picture.
Naomi is a good friend so why would you not accept the offer? You came along with her and ate lunch with a few other co-workers outside the building.
"Where's Nanami, (Y/N)?" Naomi asked and the question was so out of the blue that it made you choke on your food. You immediately recovered and that raised a little suspicion in your other co-workers.
"Oh, he called in sick today, and said he can't come to work." You answered as soon as you were clear to talk. This is weird because of all the times you've been together, it's very rare for him to get sick and he doesn't look like he would be but guess you were wrong. Tough people still really do have weaknesses.
"Say, what's going on between you two?" One of the girls asked and that got you flustered. Just what kind of question is that?
"We're friends." You directly answered with pure panic, stuttering on every word. Naomi and the others giggled as your actions are different from your words.
"Are you sure? Why does it seem more than that? You two hang out every single day." Naomi teases you and you just laugh nervously. You wanted to deny but it's no use from them on insisting that you two are something other than friends.
"He just...helps me out a lot." You said which is true. Even in the easiest things, Nanami would be around to help you. And now that you think about it, everything that he does is for your convenience. Lately, he's been driving his car way more often and though he said once that he only drives when he's in the mood for it, it makes you wonder what his mood is to be driving so frequently.
At lunch, though you've learned that he loves bread and the two of you eat bread for a whole month and a half, saving you two a spot at the bakery, he started dragging you to different restaurants. You wondered what's with the sudden change that even the staff at the bakery noticed.
You were actually glad with the bread diet since you were losing weight. And now that he brings you to the restaurant, you quickly regained what you lost and maybe even added some more.
Guess some favorites doesn't always last forever.
What your co-workers had told you never left your mind even for a minute. You and Nanami are just friends, there's nothing more or less than that. He helps you and you help him, though you're getting more help from him than you giving him any.
Good friends hang out a lot, right? But you and Naomi are too but you don't spend that much time together. Same label, but different situations. It's just normal, two friends always hanging out and two friends not hanging out that much. Just because you and Naomi don't hang out that much doesn't mean you two aren't good friends.
There's nothing to think about, really. It's just that, a friendship between a man and a woman is different and it's dangerous. As for someone like you who doesn't like to take a risk, you took quite a big leap of faith in befriending the cold-blooded Nanami Kento in your department.
And that danger is nearing as you feel your heart swell every time you see him. And with almost little to no effort, you find him fascinating too. You definitely don't see him as a friend and you tread this very thin line between love and hate.
Why? Because knowing Nanami who probably has no time for emotional stress and who has really bad communication skills, he might not like the idea of you liking him. He might even come to the point of hating you because "being in love is idiotic", as he casually said once that broke your heart. But despite all those, Nanami is still a good man so, why would you not fall for him?
You can't also tell if he reciprocates your feelings with the way he's been so gentle and caring towards you. Nanami would always put you first rather than himself. Just like that one time when the trains were full and you were wearing heels that hurt your ankle already. A passenger got off and you were about to let bim sit but he didn't and made you sit, pointing out your hurting ankle and legs.
He would also come to your desk which is quite a walk away from his every time he finishes work first before you. This happens all the time since Nanami really does well in his work, he was being offered a promotion but he still isn't accepting it. Probably afraid of going to another department with no one he knows.
"It's been this long but I still don't know him, I think." You mumbled to yourself as you lie down on your bed, thinking about him. Nanami said he was sick so of course, you as a concerned friend, wanted to check up on him. He doesn't even live that far but you still need permission. But then again, you wouldn't want to disturb a resting sick person.
You just wish he's doing well.
"(Y/N), are you done?" Nanami asked as soon as he reached your table. You aren't as jumpy anymore because you're already expecting him to creep up on you like that.
"No, not yet. I think I'll stay for another ten minutes. You can go home first if you want." You took your eyes off your screen to look up at Nanami, still looking dashing as ever since you first saw him.
"I have my car with me. I'll wait for you." He insisted and you didn't want to annoy him furthermore so you let him be.
"Alright. But if you don't think you can wait anymore, you can go home first." You said once again and Nanami just hummed, taking a seat at one of the vacant desks just right next to you.
"Wake me up when you're done." He asked you to and you agreed to keep it in mind. Though a little flustered by the fact that he's waiting for you despite hating staying overtime at work, you garnered your full focus to finish as quickly as possible.
Ever since Nanami has gotten over his sickness, you noticed something off about him. You can't put your hand around it but lately, he's been a little too...attached. He's been too close to you and not that you mind it but it has you blushing all the time that you're excusing that you're being sunburned.
Whenever you two walk around, he'd be way too close that your shoulders would touch though his are a little higher than yours. It's not like it's always cramped but your shoulders and arms touch, and sometimes your hands even touch which had you feeling awkward and blushing.
Nanami has been talking a lot as well but not about himself but more about you. Asking you numerous things about yourself as if you haven't said much already. It's actually nice to see him interested and talk at times like this but you wish that he would talk about himself more.
You stood up and stretched your body, finally free from work and you woke Nanami up. It's only just 30 minutes of waiting but it does seem that he had quite a good sleep. You were actually expecting him to be a little snappy for waiting too long for you but seeing he's as gentle as he looks right now, makes you feel glad. Isn't that a good sign that something's changing in him?
"I'm done, Nanami. Let's go home." You said in the most gentle tone that you could and he hummed, sitting up from his seat and yawning. You didn't want to disturb his peace so you didn't talk unless he wants to.
And so, the two of you walked out of the building, not saying anything to each other. Not that you require talking to him all the time when you two are basically always together. The two of you walked your way to the parking lot, the night getting deeper and deeper as every second passed by and the beauty of the moon is as radiant as ever.
"The moon's beautiful, isn't it?" You shamelessly blurted out that got Nanami on full stop. And it took you quite a while before realizing what you had just done. You don't really mean it that way and are just really admiring the beauty of the moon.
But how come you couldn't take back what you said? And it's not like you want to confess right away. You wanted to tell him how you feel when the time's right when you feel that he might appreciate you.
Well, that plan was ruined by yours truly. It feels so illegal that such a phrase was used to confess feelings. You aren't really into literature, heck, you even forgot about what you ate last night so how come this way of conveying feelings is something you still can't forget?
You just really have to make everything awkward, don't you? You scold yourself mentally and try to drift away anywhere else but here with Nanami who's just dead staring at you.
Nanami doesn't reply but he was taken aback by your accidental confession. Though it wasn't the same words, it still had the same meaning and the same feeling. You just wanted to disappear right then and there.
"Let's go home, (Y/N)." He disregarded what you said and continued walking. You were glad but you were also hurt. Glad that he didn't mind but hurt that he might not share the same feeling. It sucks so much and you can't do anything about it.
You don't know if you dodged a bullet or took an L.
Nanami hasn't been around lately. You aren't really sure what happened to him but he once told you that he'll be away for a week and had permission to do so since he already filed a leave. You aren't sure what to say and you're starting to feel that it was because you confessed to him.
If only you weren't so impulsive and maybe fixed your words, this wouldn't have happened. You just can't help but blame yourself for it. And the fact that he had to file a leave from work makes it even worse, you just pushed him into somewhere he isn't comfortable.
Unsure of what you should say, you just told him to be careful and call you up when something happens. Of all the times that Nanami has been with you, never has he asked you for anything at all and that's still bothering you.
Nanami was nothing but kind to you and this is how you repay him. He just wanted to have some friends and now you fell in love with him. You're probably one of the worst friends ever, falling for him just because of a simple act of kindness.
You really are low of a person.
A week had passed and not even once has Nanami contacted you again. You know that he isn't one to text first nor even talk about what he's doing and even check up on you. Nanami is probably the most cold-blooded person you've ever met but that never got to you. He may look always irritated and frowning but that's just his looks, he's a very kind-hearted man and does a lot of things that also make your heart skip a beat.
You hung out with Naomi ever since then, along with your other co-workers. It was a large group and you like the company, it was very lively every time you all go out and hang out. They even had these shopping and bonding times that you aren't fond of but you still come anyways.
Just to fill a void inside you, you all went to many places and even spent a ridiculous amount of your money. Life without Nanami by your side just isn't right for you. You never felt anything better than when Nanami used to be with you, no matter how quiet or talkative he is(which is very rare).
But no .atter how many people you're with every day, it still didn't feel right, you don't think that you're fulfilled or whatever. You still feel empty. You were absolutely lonely.
It's Sunday and it is supposed to be your rest day but you're in your house, cleaning every nook and cranny since it's been a while ever since you've cleaned your entire house and it was a disaster. You never knew how lazy you are in throwing things in garbage until now.
But the main reason that you're doing so is to invite Nanami over and apologize to him about last time and own up to your confession and do it properly. You and Nanami aren't kids anymore and you're very much a woman now despite having little experience in love that probably your idea of a relationship is a little like a high-schoolers.
Though Nanami might be a bit uncomfortable, you had a backup plan of going to a new bakery just around the corner that you think he might like. Never would you take him to the bakery he loves to go to when you have something serious to talk about with him. You're being too careful not to imprint something like a memory of you messing up his favorite bakery for him.
But as you were finishing up, your phone rang from your pocket, and saw that it was Nanami. You quickly answered it, disregarding everything and giving him full attention. You didn't even notice the smile form on your lips as soon as you answered the call.
"Hello, Nanami? How are you?" You asked and all of your newfound optimism was thrown out of the window as soon as you heard grunts and groans, quite the ragged breathing, and finally, Nanami's voice.
"Help...me..." And with just those two words, you rushed out of your house and ran to his in less than a minute. Your feet were cold as well as your fingertips, and all of the blood on your face were gone despite your heart beating so fast.
And there you are at his open front door, you rushed inside disregarding your intrusion and even though your mind was getting hazy, you were focused on finding Nanami.
"Nanami? Nanami!" You called out to him, checking the living room and then the kitchen. You heard some knocking down of some utensils on the second floor so you rushed up to see him on the bathroom floor, bleeding.
"Oh my god, Nanami! What happened?!" You asked in a hurry as you look at his blue dress shirt turning into a very deep red with slashes and holes where the bleeding starts. He started unbuttoning his shirt and you helped him get it off only to see his body full of wounds, unsure how many there are since you're a little too overwhelmed.
"Long story..." He groaned as he move his body to let you undress him fully. You took the cloth from his hand and put pressure on the biggest slash on his chest to stop the bleeding. The others were open wounds so you tried your best to keep it clean to avoid any infections.
"Whatever have you got yourself into? Do you know how worried I was? Do you know how scared I am!" You were scolding him so much with tears flowing from your eyes like falls while he couldn't laugh at you weakly. He reached out to your face, wiping your tears and smiling.
"I'm fine. I'll live, (Y/N)." He chuckled weakly which lead to him coughing. You groaned in frustration because it doesn't look like you'll be able to treat him just by yourself.
"Hell yeah, you better be!" You scolded him again and cleaned his wounds as your best to stop the bleeding for now. It looks like your basic knowledge of first aid won't work this time so you tried calling for an ambulance but Nanami stopped you.
"Don't bother, (Y/N). A friend of mine will pick me up and patch me up. Until then, just...stay with me here." Nanami asked you nicely, staring right into your soul. If his eyes were naturally narrow and small, now it seems like it's way too small for you to see. You just wish this isn't going to be the last time that you'll see him.
After you've stopped the excessive bleeding, you wrapped him in a bandage to cover his wounds from infection. Though it hurts to hear him groan and whimper in pain, you had to go through it for his sake. And it's odd for you that Nanami treats this as a normal occurrence in his life. You don't know who Nanami Kento is but that didn't even bother you.
"Nanami, don't sleep just yet." You said as you wipe his body from blood and his face. You might not know the whole story but you're sure that you'll take Nanami's side no matter what. This might be the favor you need to do for him and you're ready for it.
"I'm not, I'm just resting my eyes." Nanami reasoned out and you're far from believing him right now. He's lost way too much blood and letting him drift off to sleep is dangerous.
"That's just the same, dumb-dumb!" You couldn't continue what you were going to say you just resorted to repeating the same insult. Nanami just chuckled again which gets on your nerves. How can he treat this so lightly?
The two of you sat there on the cold bathroom floor but neither of you felt it. You had way too much adrenaline in your body and Nanami has lost way too much blood to feel any temperature for now. You aren't sure how you should make the mood lighten up when you're not even in the mood for it. You didn't want to disturb him but you've got to keep him awake.
"Hey, Nanami," You called out to him and you just hear him hum so you turned to him, only to be greeted by his tired look with sleepy eyes. You get yourself a new cloth by the sink and a towel to start wiping his body clean some more and to distract yourself while talking to him.
"I don't know what you did for a living and I don't care whatever you did back then but please, take care of yourself even more." You said, not even caring if you sound annoying right now, that's already past you because this man right here might die in your hands.
"I'm your friend, Nanami and I am very much concerned about you so I would like you to know that you can always rely on me. And I will do everything that I can to help you." You continued on and finally wrapped the towel around him to keep him from getting cold. You were now about to clean his face, only to see him look at you...lovingly?
Your mind must be playing games with you right now because how could he do that when clearly, he's out of his mind due to blood loss? Nanami also once said that 'falling in love is a nuisance' so how could you come up with a conclusion like that? This is absurd and you should snap out of it.
"I'm sorry if I haven't been too honest with you, (Y/N)." Nanami confessed and you blew raspberries which got him confused. You finally looked him in the eye and sat right next to him.
"Don't worry about it. Everyone has their secrets, right?" You assured him and you threw his bloody shirt on the sink that has water in it. You thought you'd clean it up later when he gets picked up.
"Still, you deserved to know since I got you this worried." He insisted and you just stayed quiet. Yes, you want to know more about Nanami but you never pushed him, considering how aloof he is around people. Sure, you know some trivial facts about him and this one friend at his former work named Gojou Satoru but there's nothing more to that.
"How was work?" Nanami suddenly asked and you were shocked of course. It's a very rare thing since he doesn't like talking about work. Once you two are out of the office, he would rather talk about some stupid sitcoms rather than work.
"It was fine. I hung out with Naomi and the others a lot because I was feeling lonely. Work was tough as always but I managed." You made sure to hide the most embarrassing thing to ever admit to him in between your words but he still caught on to it.
"Just fine? I thought you hung out with them?" He pressed on harder and you hugged your knees to your chest, burying your face to it.
"Yeah but I told you I still felt lonely!" You were forced to answer and you were stupid enough to say it out again to him. Love really does take the fool out of you and you just hope he forgets about this once he recovers. Distracted by your embarrassment, you didn't notice that Nanami had his hand reaching for yours and held it, resting it on his lap.
"How about now, do you still feel lonely, (Y/N)?" Nanami asked, looking at your flustered state. You were almost steaming since you can feel your face heat up as much as it can. You're not sure who will pass out first, you or Nanami because this is making your heartbeat crazy.
"No, not anymore." You answered, appreciating the warmth Nanami provides despite how cold his hands are. Nanami is such a mysterious and confusing man. His looks do match him but it's like a weird combination that makes sense. Sure, he's cold and strict and all but that's because he cares. He might say some harsh words but that was to protect people that are around him.
And with him doing this to you is very confusing. Holding hands with someone who 'confessed' to you? Isn't that a little weird? But no matter what his intentions are or the meaning of this thing going on between you two now, you don't mind. This is more than enough and you're just glad you met someone like Nanami Kento.
It's been a week again ever since Nanami left you. His friend did pick him up but he didn't even bother letting you know his name. Who would even have the chance to introduce themselves when you see a bleeding man on the bathroom floor?
You've been so uneasy those days as the thought of Nanami getting kidnapped crossed your mind. What if that man wasn't the one supposed to take him? No, Nanami seems too willing to come with him, he would put up a fight if he doesn't know him. But if he is feeling well, you secretly hope he'd at least let you know.
As you said, you don't really care about his past and are ready to accept him for who he is but it seems like he's the one having difficulties in accepting himself. You couldn't help but think about him every second of the day. How is Nanami now? Has he eaten a healthy amount of bread? Does he have time to read newspapers like he does during your break time?
You looked at the hand that he once held the last time that you met. It was so foolish of you to think that you two had something when clearly, he just wanted to show you empathy, as a good friend that he is.
"Lonely, huh?" You talked to your hand as you wait for work to pile up on you and just get yourself distracted from all of this. Never has it once slipped your mind that one hell of a rainy night, unable to go home would put you in a situation like this.
Am I being ghosted?
That question keeps on playing in your mind. No, that's impossible. Nanami's way too kind to do that to someone. You don't even think he would be someone able to do that nor even know how to do that. He just strikes you as a perfect man with no flaws and that's you being biased. Oh well, as if you can bad mouth the person you fell in love with anyways.
Frustrated and sad, you don't really know much about what to do in your life. Work is something you don't look forward to but Nanami makes the office lively. You two even discover some places you never thought existed just to have a quiet time together. And because of that, you find yourself going to those quiet places by yourself, reminiscing those times you shared.
It doesn't matter if any of you talked. Nanami was there to accompany you. An introverted, awkward person like you got to be with a strict and cool Nanami Kento. If that isn't such a great opportunity then I don't know what is.
It's like they say, 'good things never last' and he's just too good to be true. A handsome man with a well-built body a kind heart and good morals. It would probably take you another lifetime to find someone like him again. And you're just too stupid to ruin it by complimenting the moon.
"I'm the worst." You groaned as you succumb to your self-loathing. Somewhere, anywhere around the world, you know Nanami is there, hopefully, looking at the same sky, the same sun, and the same moon. You just hope he adores it just like how you do.
Because you know yourself that you'd trade anything you have just to see him again. Just to talk to him again, just to be with him again.
The heavens must've heard you and granted your wish. It's been two weeks ready since then and still no news about Nanami at all. Your co-workers don't even talk about him since he isn't really someone that everyone knows. Naomi does know him though but they hardly ever talk about him ever since they last teased you to him.
Until one night, you took over time because you don't have anything to look forward to in going home. You were also planning to take a short vacation because you haven't been feeling well ever since Nanami left without saying anything properly.
You were too busy typing on the computer until you hear the door open and close. Knowing how much of a scaredy cat you are despite being in your late 20s, you stood up to check what it was to make sure you were the only one in the office.
You walked up to the door and there was no one, it's probably your mind playing games with you so you could go to sleep already so you paid it no mind anymore. But it was the middle of the night already and it was the time of the day when memories of Nanami kept on playing back in your mind. So you decided to go and visit his desk where he works, never have you ever seen him so serious at work. It was an absolute bummer because you've never done this to him while he was still here while he did it for you almost every day.
But to your surprise, there he was, standing by his desk, looking at it as if he's trying to remember something about it. You couldn't believe it yourself, it's been so long ever since you last saw him. And even though that part of the office was dark since not all lights were on and only the moon provided little to no light, he still look as dashing as he did when you two first met.
Sharp facial features, a well-defined jaw, and his peculiar pair of glasses that don't have arms.
"Nanami?" You called out to him, doubting your eyes because you've been having sleepless nights and this just might be one of your delusions. It's unbelievable how crazy you've been just because of one man and that man is now in front of you.
He didn't respond but he did look at you but he did look like he's regretting in doing so and that broke you. You wanted to cry but you didn't want to get your vision fuzzy, you want to get a good look at his face before he leaves, even if this is a delusion.
You mustered all your courage and walked up to him while he still had his eyes glued to you. Chuckling, you looked at him from head to toe. There are a lot of things going through your mind and you don't even know if your heart hurts because he's back here again and you finally get to see him after so long or you know that he'll be leaving again as soon as you see him.
You looked at his desk where had his eyes on now, as if he was trying to tell you something without opening his lips. His desk was now cleaned out properly and the only thing left there was the computer. Nanami doesn't really have that much on his desk other than a few pens and pins and other stationery.
"What-What's wrong? Where's your stuff?" You asked again and you see his hand clutch on his briefcase. Sure, Nanami still wore the same formal suit he put on every time he goes to work but this time, it feels so different.
You didn't want to jump to conclusions but your anxiety wouldn't let you think rationally anymore and thought that Nanami is leaving again. Anger is something you never really felt until now. You want to get angry at him but you couldn't. But instead, you're just chuckling even though every second he stays there with you crushes your whole spirit.
"Are you leaving again, Nanami Kento?" You finally dared to ask him and finally, he looked at you again. Despite his glasses getting in the way to see his beautiful eyes, you can feel his gaze on you. This is already more than enough, it doesn't matter if he talks anymore though you miss his passive-aggressiveness every time he talks and the way every words that come out so intimidating yet soothing either way. His being here is enough.
Silence again. What do you expect? You've ruined this for him and you even got into a business you shouldn't be into. But if this is what Nanami wants and he thinks is good for the both of you, you're ready to listen and follow what he wants.
"It's fine. You must be busy but make sure to take care of yourself. I hope you make friends there other than Gojou Satoru. It looks like you'll love what you do there more than here so, I just wish you luck!" You babbled by yourself and even acted silly to lighten up the mood, pretending you never even asked him about leaving again.
You don't want to show him how weak you are because you're afraid that it'll make him guilty about leaving you. You don't want to be selfish because you have been ever since he existed in your life, giving you everything you ever needed. It's clear that not everything last forever but it was way too sudden. Maybe it's for the better, the faster this ends, the faster you two would forget each other.
"But before you leave, can you do me a last favor?" You don't know what has gotten into you that such an idea came to mind. Nanami kept on looking at you, not even trying to communicate anymore as if he isn't there at all.
"Can you let me hug you?"
Silence.
You were about to withdraw since silence means no but Nanami's hands reached out to stop you. His hands felt so cold on your skin and you don't know if you're tripping or what but this feels too real. It's Nanami in the flesh. How could you not realize that this was all real?
Frozen in place because of the sudden realization, Nanami pulled you close to him but never wrapped his arms around you. He felt so warm and fluffy as you wrap your arms around his body. The same exact smell of orange and lemon with a hint of a musky scent of his own reminds you of the first time you got close to him, putting his spare umbrella in the backseat.
You stayed there, savoring the moment as much as you can before you pulled away. You didn't realize tears were already streaming down your face and Nanami refuse to see it and looked ahead of him.
"I'll miss you, Nanami." You confessed and he didn't even bat an eye to you. Never have you thought that the last words you'd hear from him are harsh and cold just like the night you two first met.
"Please don't." And there he goes, leaving the office without even looking at you for the last time. While you were down on your knees and covering your face even though no one would see, bawling your eyes out.
It made you wonder, what if Nanami got home ahead of you that night? What if it didn't rain that night? What if you had friends to hang out with all the time? What if you didn't praise the moon's beauty that time Nanami was about to drive you home?
You want to get mad but you can't find a reason to. And if it would be blamed on someone, it would be none other than you. You fell for someone who looked for nothing but friendship among his co-workers.
If only you did things the right way, this wouldn't have happened. Was there even a right way? You don't know anymore and let yourself succumb to your self-loathing.
"(Y/N)!" A familiar voice called out to you as you take a walk around the city to treat yourself. You turned to see who it is and it's like everything that happened played back in your mind. Be it the pleasant and unpleasant memories, it unlocked and triggered something in you.
"Naomi! How are you? It's been so long!" You exclaimed as soon as you came up to her and greet her with a big hug. She still looked the same but as you check her up and down, you noticed her belly grow differently.
"Oh, I'm actually having my first baby now! I can't believe it's been so long, has it really been 3 whole years?" She asked as she place her hand on her back to support herself. You asked permission to check the baby and she did so.
Must be nice to have a family now.
You thought to yourself and smiled as you imagined some little you running around in the house. But who might the father be? Your mind never ceases to mess with you as thoughts of Nanami came barging in, taking care of your children, greeting them with arms wide open and carrying them as he swing them around playfully.
"Yeah, I can't really tell if it's long or short." You mumbled to yourself. Has it really been 3 years? After Nanami left you that night, you submitted a resignation which they let you do so easily and now, you're working as a nursery teacher. It does help you with your social skills with people since kids are quite easy to talk to and it isn't awkward for you anymore.
But it still wasn't enough. There are still some things you're concerned about and none other than Nanami came through your mind when it comes to solving them. It's always 'What would Nanami do if he's here'. Though it wasn't a healthy way for you to get by, it did help you a lot. You can't believe how much you relied on Nanami that despite him abandoning you, you still kept on thinking about him.
Because never a day have you not thought about him. Even though you went out of your way to quit your job at the office because everything about it reminds you of Nanami and even moved out of the city to another just to keep you sane. Funny how you just spent more than half a year with him but he lives in your mind as if he's someone you've been with for a long time.
Guess that's how it is because he was your greatest love. And he still is. You want to blame him for taking care of you that you've gotten so dependent on him, but oh well, not like it would change anything at all.
"So, wanna hang out? My husband's away for the time being so I thought I should go shopping for my baby." Naomi poked you back to reality and you smiled.
"Sure! Can I be the godmother when you give birth? I want to be a godmother to my good friend's child!" You pleaded with her with the most irresistible tone you could do and Naomi didn't even think twice.
"Of course! I was looking for you to make you a godmother for all of my children." She said and that made you have doubts. And so, the two of you continued to a mall to buy a lot of things for the baby.
The two of you caught up with all the years lost. You've learned that Naomi still works at the same company but she's promoted and in a different department, where she actually met her husband. Currently, she's on her maternal leave since she only has three more months before her due.
"Hey, I know this is a little hard for you but, why did you leave? Was it because of Nanami leaving?" Naomi asked, with the most gentle tone she could to avoid upsetting you. You're already past it but of course, it still wouldn't leave your mind.
Your mind and your heart would rather be in two different bodies because the two just don't get along. You want to forget about him and heal from him because of the slight abandonment issues you developed with him. And as soon as you did, your heart went back to loving him again and hoping for you two to meet again as if nothing ever happened.
But how? Now that you lived far away from where you two would surely meet. You agree that you were being impulsive when you got your heart broken.
"Oh, yeah. I just couldn't stand it. You know, we've been together every day and everywhere at the office." You smiled bitterly as memories of you two hanging out whenever you two can play back in your mind. It's rare to see him smile at you during those times but you always make him chuckle so it must be the same. Though it's hard to catch him doing so. And if you did catch him smiling, you were sure the word beautiful was made for him.
"I'm so sorry, (Y/N)." Naomi sympathized with you and you just sat there, quietly thinking about a lot of things. Would it be possible that you two would meet again if only you stayed? Would it make a difference? Such thoughts kept on rushing through your mind but you snapped out of it. You're here to enjoy your time with a friend.
"It's fine. It's been a while anyways." You assured her and you went on ahead talking about a lot of things other than Nanami. But even though Naomi was really careful not to bring it up back again, it sure never left your mind.
You two wrapped the shopping up by eating dinner because you didn't realize that it was already dark out. Naomi's husband really ought to take care of her because right now, just by looking at all the bags you carry, you definitely are filling up the role of the husband and dad.
"Let me drive you home, Naomi." You offered since there is no way that she'll go home by herself with these many things she bought. No is an answer you won't accept so you lead her to the parking lot where you put your car.
"Thank you so much, (Y/N). My husband has been busy these days and I'm really glad I bumped into you." You just smiled at her and helped her get in. Suddenly, the rain poured, unexpected since the forecast never mentioned any rain. But luckily for you, you always have an umbrella and a spare with you as always.
The same situation just reminds you of the fateful day you and Nanami talked to each other. It makes you sad but happy at the same time.
And it makes you wonder, does Nanami have an umbrella with him?
After you got Naomi back to her safe and sound, you made sure to go to the old neighborhood you used to live in before you leave the city. Someone already bought the house you lived in so you just stopped for a second and admired it, remembering how it used to look back then.
But other than that reason, you wanted to see Nanami. You drove a bit more until you reached his house. The last time you went in here was years ago and he was all covered in blood. Not a memory worth reminiscing but there were some good bits about it that you just cant forget. Most especially, the time he held your hand and asked about your day at work despite knowing how much he abhors it.
You parked your car on the side and got off with an umbrella in hand, along with an extra if ever Nanami comes. You want to knock on his door but are afraid to see him so you just decided on waiting by the porch.
With every passing minute, you can't help but be anxious. What would you do if he did show up coming from somewhere? Would you greet him properly or just leave like he did? What would you even dare say to him?
But worst case scenario, what if he came with someone else? And then what? What kind of face would you wear because, of course, you wouldn't be able to stand that? It's not like you came here for a fight or anyways, you just came here to get a glimpse of Nanami, even just for a short while.
You turned to see his driveway on the side and the garage wherein he has his car parked inside. It made you chuckle as Nanami's habit of not using his car despite the huge benefit it brings him, still hasn't changed. And all for the reason of 'I'm not always in the mood to drive'.
Given that he doesn't have his car with him, it meant he took a subway or whatever he use for transport to wherever he goes for his new work. And so, you spaced out yet again, remembering the good old times as you wait for him patiently.
Lost deep in your thoughts, you didn't realize that someone came and only noticed it as soon as you heard some rustling in front of you. You looked up to see a man almost the same as Nanami's build and a tad bit taller, dressed in black, a blindfold restricting you from seeing his eyes. He also had his white hair spiked up but his wacky and peculiar appearance doesn't match his aura.
"Are you (L/N) (Y/N)?" He asked and you stood up, still looking up at him. If Nanami was tall, then this man must be a tower. You were a little alarmed that he knew your name while you don't know his so you prepared for the worst.
"I'm Gojo Satoru," He extends his hand to shake yours and you were hesitant, of course, but as soon as you knew his name, something hit you.
"You're Nanami's..."
"Yes, I am that Gojo Satoru. I've heard a lot about you." He said as you took his hand and he shook it gently. He isn't anything like Nanami told you. Just by the way, Nanami say his name with a sigh and almost recurring with a headache, you thought he was going to be some kind of a rude, jackass. But, it doesn't seem so now that he's in front of you.
"Um, nice to meet you. I'm sorry to be waiting here like a creep, I should get going." You apologized, flustered, and almost ran away but Gojo stopped you in your tracks.
"It's alright. About Nanami, he's not...going to come back here." Gojo wanted to deliver his message as gently as possible and not just slap it in your face. You were confused as to what he meant and that made you stay a bit longer there.
"What do you mean?"
"Here, Nanami told me to give this to you." Gojo pulled out an envelope from his pockets and presented it to you. You were confused as to what was happening. Did he leave town or the country? You wanted to know why but it's not like he ever said anything to you about leaving ever, despite those other times he left you without saying anything. But you once recall Nanami mentioning living overseas when you tend to his injuries in the bathroom.
"Once I get to fulfill my job, I want to live somewhere secluded with a great view of the sunset." Nanami said as he still holds your hand. His mind is hazy and his vision blurry but that helped him have a great picture of what he wants to achieve.
"I would also love to read all the books I've bought but never got the chance to read now. Almost something like keeping up with the times I've lost." He trailed on and you just sat there, looking at him lovingly. You never knew Nanami would have something he wish for and he definitely looks like he's looking forward to doing this.
"Spend all of my remaining time there...with someone, probably. It depends." He continued and looked at your soul. You immediately looked away, flustered and straining yourself from jumping to conclusions. There's no way he would mean to be with you.
Nanami chuckled at your reaction. He secretly hopes deep inside that you get what he means despite the mixed signals he's been giving and the nearing issue of him having to abandon you.
"Why does it depend?" You were brave enough to question and Nanami was glad you asked. He smiled and sighed.
"It depends if she'll forgive me for what I have to do first. And if she does, I'll ask her to live with me then." He looked at you again but you were still tucking your face in your arm. It was such a bummer that he couldn't get to see your reaction but your hands were surely holding on tight to his.
If only time could stop. If only what he planned goes accordingly, then, he will be the happiest man alive.
But it didn't. And now, you're here with a letter in your hand. You were hesitant to open and read it but it looks like it's way too important to skip it 'til you get home.
And so, you did. You opened the envelope to see a piece of paper folded in three. It got you confused and curious so you took your time to examine it first before reading it all. Because never have you ever thought that Nanami would be the type to write letters. He might be struggling with communicating with people on the spot, but there's also a huge chance he could express himself more through writing.
The familiar messy yet organized in a way penmanship made you smile. But something in you screams something that this isn't good. You don't know unless you get to see what the letter contains, right? So you took a deep breath and read what the letter says.
(Y/N),
If you're reading this, Gojo must've been there with you right now, just like I planned and told him. First of all, I want to thank you for everything that you've done for me. It might seem not much for you but it is more than enough for me. Talking to me even though I don't talk that much, always being with me whenever and wherever I needed you. I used to hate having human relations but you, you're most definitely a huge exception and I'm glad that it was you. I was so afraid that one day, you might leave me just like the others do once they get tired of me, but you didn't. And that makes you much more special than anyone I've ever known.
The first day I met you, you were like a deer. So innocent and pure, curious about many things and pursuing them as much as you can but also careful at the same time. So I thought, that night, it wouldn't hurt to know you, right? I guess I was wrong because it didn't go as I planned.
Though aloof towards others but me, I appreciate every bit of your honesty and trust in me. And it pains me that I couldn't do the same for you. You must think you've done less for me while I do the bare minimum, but please do know how much you've done for me. Just you simply existing in my life has changed me for the better.
You'd always understand and consider things I say no matter how harsh I sounded. I can't blame you at times when you don't feel like talking to me at all. You don't deserve me and you made sure I know that so I did my best to be the one you deserve. I made sure I talk to my other colleagues and try to communicate properly so I wouldn't mess up in front of you again. Every time I hurt you with my own words, it hurts just as much because I'm stupid enough to not be able to express and tell you what I feel.
Never in my life ever since I knew you, was ever dull. Even talking about trivial things which I used to despise sounds so normal now. And now that you're not here with me, it makes me lonely. I want to hear your voice, I want to hear you blabber about your favorite snack, the promos you've gotten from supermarkets, and the way you used to embarrass yourself back then. I want it all, I want to know it all. And of course, I'll let you know mine as well. I'll let you know trivial things about me, about how I properly wash my clothes, what kind of foods piques my interest.
The human mind can hold on to so many memories a person could have in their lifetime but you, you sure do have a knack for forgetting simple things but not anything about your friends. You may forget about your umbrella, no matter how the weather is, but you would never forget to check up on me every single day. Even how to do things at work, you tend to be so forgetful and that scares me because you may or may not forget about me so easily. But it seems like you would but I think that would be better. Other than that, I hope you stop forgetting to bring something essential like umbrellas whenever you go to work.
(Y/N), I have so many things I want to talk about with you, so many things to write about you, so many things I want to do with you. But I'm afraid all those wants have now turned into wishes. I wish I did all of these things while I still have time. I wish you'd be more careful from now on because I won't be able to be by your side again.
This letter is just one of the many drafts I've hidden in my house. And in every mission I take, I make sure to write one because I am not always certain if I were to get home even. I know what you told me that night, the full moon looming over us. Though I know you genuinely meant to praise the moon, I was glad to hear that from you. But then again, fear took over me and I had to pretend that it was nothing.
I didn't want to hurt you, believe me, I do. So that's why I had to put a distance between us. I knew from the first time we met that this would cause inconvenience for the both of us but I risked it and now you're roped into this mess. And so, I left, thinking it would be the best solution. Because I know, eventually, I'll have to leave you, whether I want it or not. And who knew it would happen way too soon?
I do abhor office work and overtime but you made it tolerable. But it still wasn't tolerable enough for me to stay since I have a job where they need me there more. I get to save innocent people's lives. I get to save a friend and I'm also doing this to protect you. I can't say specifics and you don't need to know. Just know that I do things that benefit everyone and don't take it as 'transactional'. I chose this work because I know I'll get to do what I really like doing.
(Y/N), I'm so sorry I've been a coward to say all of this to you and instead written it to paper. But I hope my feelings would reach you. I deeply apologize for all the things I did that hurt you. That very last night we shared at the office, I was holding back as much as I could because I know that if you told me to stay, I know I would. But good thing you didn't because I don't know what kind of danger and if I will even be able to think that I caused you trouble. I'm really glad you stayed stronger than me.
But before I finish this letter, I want to let you know how I was doing. I was working with my friends and even met this great kid named Yuuji Itadori. You could say that he and Gojo are like two pieces of a broken pot. He reminded me of you, but he's rather much more annoying than Gojo. I always have a great time at work and never did you escape my mind despite me being on duty. I told Gojo and Yuuji a lot about you so I'm pretty sure the two would visit you now and then when everything comes to the 'worst case scenario'.
It's such a waste that everything I worked for came to this. But what is life without suffering? I even planned on living overseas with you, if ever you had forgiven me for abandoning you. And if you don't, I'll do my best to sincerely apologize and earn your trust in me again. Because you are the most beautiful woman I've met in my whole life and I would want to live again and go through the same suffering I've been through before meeting you. You are worth all the pain I've been through, (Y/N).
But for now, I'll have to rest. And I hope I'd meet you again, somewhere. And I noticed how much you like looking at the moon every night. And yes, the moon is really beautiful as I see it tonight, writing this letter for you.
And all I can say is; I can die happy.
Nanami Kento.
The last words in the letter got you weak and you were almost unable to breathe. Tears had been flowing out of your eyes as soon as you understood what that letter meant. At first, you want to refuse that it's what it means and that it would be something like a letter of apology for what he did to you back then.
And just like that night when you first talked to Nanami, you were wrong.
You thought there would still be a chance, after seeing Gojo, his only friend that he mentioned to you. But then again, you were wrong.
Your whole body throbbed from pain. You don't even know where the pain originally comes from now. It just hurts, everything does and you can't see anything at all from bawling your eyes out. Gojo hates seeing someone so vulnerable as they are easier targets for curses so he made up his mind to keep an eye on you from now on.
"Nanami..." You called out weakly, trying to catch your breath as if it would bring him back. You couldn't process what you had just read. You don't want to believe it because there's something inside you not wanting to let go and feel like he's still here somewhere.
"I'm so sorry, (Y/N). If only I could've been more efficient if only I was fast enough." Gojo said and you just smiled at him. Even if Nanami once slandered him, you were pretty sure he is a great friend that Nanami had to mention him to you.
"It's fine, it's no one's fault. I'm pretty sure he's somewhere better. A secluded place with a nice view of the sunset." You mumbled to yourself and Gojo removed his blindfold. His beautiful ocean-like blue eyes say a lot. He pulled you into a hug while you continue bawling your eyes out.
Who would've thought that it will be the last time you see him, at the office, leaving you? You didn't even get a good grip on him, you should've told him all of your feelings. You had a lot of regrets now and Nanami did as well. But that's just the more reason to look forward to meeting him again, somewhere, someday.
"I'll see you again soon, Nanami." You whispered to the air as Gojo and you kept on comforting each other from the emptiness and loneliness Nanami's death brought, the rain pouring outside.
