Closing the Distance

Summary:

Faced with a wall of friendship in front of him, Kirishima's been stuck, unable to find any type of way to break it down and get closer to Kaminari and tell him how he's always felt about him. He's made a few attempts but they backfired. Now, he's trying another and hopes that it will prove fruitful. Who knew though, that it would happen with a gacha game.

Work Text:

Kirishima dropped his pencil and sighed.

“Done?” Midoriya, seated across from him, looked at the worksheet.

“It was a nightmare and a half.” Kirishima passed it to him. “I doubt I got half of them right.”

“That’s much better than before.” Midoriya's voice swelled with pride. “You’re improving.”

“So.” Kirishima scratched his cheek and smiled. “I’m still not where I need to be.”

“You’ll get there in time.”

“I want to get there now.” Kirishima tapped the books beside him. “If Kaminari knew I was a total idiot when it came to this stuff then he would make fun of me.”

“He wouldn’t, especially since it’s you.”

“Just because it’s me doesn’t mean anything.” Kirishima pouted. “Especially when I want to get a little closer to him.”

Like any roommate or friend, there was a distance between them that he tried to bridge by taking a literature class, unfortunately, it wasn’t working out.

“Aren’t you close enough already?” Midoriya shrugged as he corrected an answer. “You hang out all the time.”

“Dude, hanging out is different than making out.” His voice wavered as if he felt imprisoned by the friendship that kept him from wooing his crush. “Now do you understand?”

“Kinda.” Midoriya tapped the pencil. “Walking each other to class, the lunch and dinner dates, and the long walks through the park; it’s clear that you have feelings for each other.”

“Wait.” Kirishima’s heart jumped. “Are you saying that Kaminari has feelings for me?”

Midoriya gulped.

Frickin’ A!” They were interrupted by Kaminari’s voice from the hallway. “What the eff is this?”

“Shut up!” As his friend responded, Midoriya and Kirishima joined them in the living room.

“How can I shut up when this rando called my husbando trash!” Peeved, Kaminari paid them no mind. “You’d be just the same if he made fun of yours.”

“No, I wouldn’t, because mine isn’t trash.”

“Bakugo!” Kaminari kicked him. “Just because you’re salty as hell doesn’t mean you need to give me lip.”

“Like I’d be salty over him.” Bakugo yanked his foot and threw him to the floor.

“You can posture all you want but I know you spent an ungodly amount of money on his rate-up banner.”

“I did not.”

“Dude, I was in the library when you threw your phone against the wall and screamed about rate-up being a lie.”

Bakugo blushed hard as he put his foot to his friend’s face, shutting him up and knocking him back.

Had Kaminari’s phone not chirped, then their back and forth would have continued. Ignoring his friend, he climbed onto the sofa and checked the message. Nary a minute passed before he was throwing a fit.

“Quit it!”

“Then tell this kid to quit making fun of my husbando.”

Bakugo snatched his phone and typed a message before he tossed it at him. As Kaminari caught it, he read it, or he tried to.

“Dude!” Kaminari grabbed his shoulder. “What’d you say?”

Bakugo ignored him as he pulled out his phone.

“Don’t ignore me!” Kaminari shook him. “You got me thrown in Twitter Jail!”

“I told the brat off just like you wanted.” Bakugo shoved him aside. “Now leave me the hell alone.”

“Check your dang phone later!” Kaminari grabbed Bakugo’s phone and whined. “And take back what you said. I can’t do nothing in Twitter Jail.”

“You can shut the hell up.” Bakugo grabbed him by the collar. “Unless you need me to do that for you to?”

“Can’t you take it back?” As if to keep all hell from breaking loose, Kirishima situated himself between them. “That’ll fix it, won’t it?”

“Yeah,” Kaminari answered. “But.”

“But what?”

“Nothing.” Kaminari looked at him but then didn’t. “Just nothing.”

“Hey, answer me. I just wanna help.”

“How can you help when you don’t even know the first thing about Twitter, let alone my husbando.”

Knowing he would sound like an idiot if he answered, he kept his mouth shut. Though, as Midoriya tapped him on the shoulder, he remembered what he said. Kaminari was his bestfriend. No matter what he said, he wouldn’t see him that way.

“So what if I don’t know.” Kirishima took a chance. “That doesn’t mean I don’t want to know, so why not talk to me about your husbando? That’ll make your imprisonment bearable, right?”

“It will.” Kaminari blushed as he scratched his cheek. “But, I don’t know. This isn’t really your thing.”

“That doesn’t mean it can’t be.”

“I guess.” Kaminari trailed a hand through his hair. “But normies like you will just think otakus like me are weirdos for falling for 2D characters.”

“Dude.” Kirishima laughed. “You’re my bestfriend. Something like that won’t change how I feel about you.”

“Really?” His eyes flashed hope.

“Yes, now show me that husbando of yours.” Kirishima smiled as he eyed Kaminari’s phone. “You’ve made me curious.”

Kirishima sat speechless as Kaminari showed him an anime character that, despite having unwieldy red hair, sharp shark like teeth, and a vibe that screamed hot-blooded bad boy, was not unlike himself. Remembering that he was Kaminari’s husbando, the 2D character he fell for, Kirishima couldn’t help but think that he fell for him.

“Weird, right?” Kaminari spoke as if he read his mind. “Having a crush on a look-a-like when the real one is beside me.”

“A crush? Since when?”

“Since forever,” Kaminari looked aside. “It was love at first sight, I guess.”

“Then why didn’t you say anything?” Kirishima scratched his head. “Not that I’m one to talk considering I should have said something too.”

“Huh?”

“I’ve had a crush on you too.”

“Then wow, these feelings are mutual?”

“I guess they are unless you’re already taken?” Kirishima poked the phone. “By your husbando?

“No. I’ll take you, if you’ll have me.” Kaminari blushed. “Though, I’m not giving up my husbando, he means a lot to me, like you, you know?”

“Oh you.” Kirishima ruffled his hair. “Now about Twitter jail?”

“Screw that, lets just spend time together.”
