Chapter Text
- [8:02 AM] -
The sun was rising and the city was waking up. The streets of New York city were surprisingly quiet this morning, which was great for Devin.
Devin knew- the entire city knew that this was the best club around. It had four shows every night with all of the best artists, and even a day dedicated to new artists. This club had the greatest light show you could think of with big loud speakers to accompany it. This club was so futuristic, it seemed to clean itself every night, it had contactless payment for drinks and food and tickets. It seemed to be sold out with full seats almost every night, even if the tickets did cost a pretty penny. But nobody complained about the ticket prices, it was always worth it. People have tried to fake tickets but the entrance was protected with facial recognition cameras and scanners that could decipher what the ticket was made out of down to the molecular structure.
Devin snapped out of his daydream as he got closer to the beautiful entrance of the club. The logo was of a robot helmet split down the middle, on the right was a gold one which was mostly round, almost egg shaped. On the left was a silver one with a black visor. It had a thin slit that looked like a smiling mouth. At night, they both lit up and synced with the music inside of the building. Around the door was multiple medium sized strips of blue glowing LEDs in the shapes of rhombuses. It always had posters of who was playing at what time, day, etc covering the walls by the entrance.
- [8:42 AM] -
He inhaled deeply as he entered the building, he was greeted by a beautiful arrangement of colors, rings of rainbow LEDs spiraled down the hallway to the main room where you would buy your tickets. He walked down the hallway as if he was seeing the club for the first time, which was far from the truth but it always felt that way. He took a left and stood in front of a door. The door had a large "EMPLOYEES ONLY" sign on it. He held his lanyard in front of him which had his employee identification card attached to it. The door made a quiet click as it unlocked. He walked in to the medium sized room, it was a luxurious break room with many other doors probably leading off in to other parts of the building. It had cabinets full of food, expensive leather couches, large TVs and other things he couldn't even comprehend.
He sat down in a chair at one of the tables in the center of the room, he was having a difficult time taking everything in, it was all so.. amazing. He spotted other employees chatting and quickly rushing from room to room, the smell of toast and coffee filled the room as more employees entered the break room. He looked at the walls which had posters of two shadowed figures at a DJ stand, it had bold white letters at the bottom of the poster that read, "6/14/89". He bopped his head at the nice tune that was quietly playing over the loud speakers, he recognized it immediately as "Short Circuit."
He saw an older employee enter the room from the center door by the TV, everyone said hello to them. The employee shook hands with everyone as if they had been gone for a while. Everyone turned back to what they were doing apart from the older employee. They looked at Devin with a bright smile. Devin gulped as the older employee walked over to them.
"Hey there, I haven't seen you around here, y'must be new, what's your name ginger?" The older employee asked.
"Uh yeah this is my first day on the job, nice to meet you. My name is Devin, most people call me Dev though." He smiled back nervously.
"Nice to meet you Dev, call me Jack." Jack shook Devin's hand with enthusiasm and a strong grip.
Jack was older, much older, probably in his early 40s while Dev was in his early 20s. Jack gave off a comfortable feeling, a sense of familiarity and legacy. Dev heard a chime coming from the loud speakers.
"Work time. Come with me, I'll bring you to where you need to be." Jack held out a hand to Dev as he stood up. Dev took it cautiously.
They walked through a few doors filled with other busy coworkers and DJs that would be playing that night. They had a few hours to setup until the first show which would happen at 12:00 PM. Jack led Dev in to a room filled with large DJ panels and many large screens. The room was also filled with parts for different stage pieces for later on. Jack led Dev behind the large DJ panels in to the backstage area. He spotted other coworkers were bringing pieces on and off the stage in preparation for the first show.
"Alright ginger, you're gonna help out those people bring the LED strips in." Jack pointed towards three coworkers hauling large strips of metal cased in LEDs on to the stage.
"On it!" Dev rushed over to help his coworkers with the heavy bits of metal.
Jack sighed as he watched Dev go and help the other employees.
"That kid is bad luck." He muttered to himself.
