Chapter Text
“- and that is about it!”
“Now I’m going to hand over the file of the person that you’re going to watch over for the rest of their lives, okay?”
Everyone gives a small nod. They’ve just finished their training, and the nerves they felt throughout their body could not be summed up with just that word.
“If you have any questions feel free to come to my office” he says with a small smile and leaves.
Kita and Aran seemed completely composed. How could they not? They both studied together, they knew the rulebook like the back of their hand and prepared themselves for the worst case scenarios.
They were ready for this.
.
.
.
No they weren’t.
Aran and Kita look at their files confused.
“Do you have the same thing listed here?”
Aran leans over to look, “Yeah that's weird, I’ve asked others and they don’t have that.”
“Should we go ask?”
“I think that’s for the best,” Aran says with a nod.
They head over to the office and knock on the door.
“Come in.”
“Sorry to bother, but we have a question.”
“You two?” he says amused, “Why would you guys have a question?”
Aran puts his hand behind his neck, “We’re just a bit confused.”
He softly chuckles, “Alright what's your question?”
Kita hands over his file and turns over the last page.
“Is this a typo?”
He gives it a glance and notices the sentence in bold letters.
No soulmate assigned.
“Ah.. Aran do you have the same thing?”
Aran gives him a slight nod.
“That’s not a typo.”
“What exactly do you mean?”
“We learned the first week of class that everyone has a soulmate,” Kita says confused.
He looks at the both of them crossing his arms, leaning back on his chair. “There are some exceptions.”
“Sir…?”
“Kuroo.”
“What?”
“It’s Kuroo,” he says with a smile, “You’re graduated, we’re colleagues, don’t call me sir.”
“Okay si- Kuroo,” Kita says, correcting himself.
“Can you explain?”
“Hm...Those two do not have soulmates assigned to them.”
“Meaning?”
“Meaning you will only watch over them.”
“They have no soulmate in this life, can I see your files?”
They hand it to him.
“Yeah, okay.” Kuroo says after looking through the whole thing.
“These two will not have soulmates. Indefinitely.”
“You mean...they won’t have a soulmate in any life?” Aran says in disbelief.
“Exactly.”
“WHY?” Aran outbursts.
“Sorry” he says with a cough, “Why?”
“It’s fine,” Kuroo says with a smile, “Nice to see you already care about him.”
“Well we already explained in class how we conclude one’s soulmate but I’ll reiterate.”
“We evaluate everyone individually. We then see some characteristics they lack. For example: A quiet person may be paired up with a more outgoing person etc. We also sometimes set them up based on how their souls matched up.”
“As you may know, that’s usually the most efficient way for them to stay with that person.”
Aran and Kita give a nod.
“The thing is, there are always exceptions. And some souls do not match up with anyone. They either are complete already, or the personality of the person does not require a soulmate. It may hinder that person instead.”
“Ah..so what exactly are the exceptions for ours?”
“It’s actually both,” Kuroo says with a slight nod.
“Isn’t that impossible?”
“It’s rare, very rare, especially when two people have both exceptions. But it’s not impossible, no.”
Kuroo glances at Kita, “Your person expects too much perfection. For himself and he exerts that upon others. Finding a soulmate for him could not be the case. He would just leave them because they would not be up to his par. He also has a...an independent personality if one has to put it nicely. He’s blunt, he’s arrogant because he knows he’s good and he isn’t afraid to speak his mind.”
“Your person on the other hand” Kuroo says while turning to look at Aran.
“Your person does not let people in. Finding a soulmate for him could also not be the case. He would just keep them at a distance away. We see no reason for him to want to be in love. He also has an interesting personality. He’s cold, arrogant as well but cares too much for other people. He puts others before he worries about himself. He’s also rude and isn’t afraid to speak his mind. But we don’t see anyone that can melt through his cold exterior.”
“These two are complete opposites but too alike.”
“One who, if he did fall in love, would give it his all and expect the same from his partner. While the other is, in simple terms, incapable of falling in love.”
Aran and Kita stare at each other silently.
“And there’s no way that they’ll ever find a soulmate?”
“No,” Kuroo says bluntly.
“It’s not in their plan. Everything that is written in that file will occur when it’s assigned to occur. Those two will not even cross paths, they will not even spare each other a second glance. They will not fall in love with anyone for that matter. They’re both lone wolves.”
“I’d be glad if I were you,” Kuroo says with a light shrug.
“You don’t have to see them in pain or heartbreak. They just live their lives.”
“Every time?”
“Every time.” Kuroo repeats with a nod.
“Any more questions?”
“No...no we’re good from here.”
“Great, but just remember if you need anything, my door is always open.”
Kita and Aran give another nod, say their thanks and leave.
“This isn’t right” Aran says with a mumble while they’re walking in the hall.
“You heard what he said,” Kita says with a sigh.
“They’re just not meant to be with anyone.”
“Anyone deserves someone Kita” Aran says with a slight glare. “I don’t trust someone with bed head.”
Kita gives a slight chuckle, “Just let it be, ya heard him. He said this would be easy. Consider ourselves lucky.”
“Yeah alright” Aran says with a sigh. “Who did you get by the way, and what’s their occupation?”
“Miya Atsumu,” Kita says reading out loud, “He has a twin and he works with him at a bakery. He’s just a commoner, nothing special about him” Kita adds with a shrug.
“And you?”
“Sakusa Kiyoomi” Aran says, reading, “Oh...he’s a king.”
“No way,” Kita says with wide eyes.
“You got a king yer first try?”
“Apparently a good one too” Aran says with a chuckle, “Kingdom hasn’t been in a single war.”
Kita whistles, “Guess he’s that good.”
“In return he can’t love.” Aran says with a sigh.
“Just let it be,” Kita interrupts. “Look on the bright side, Atsumu lives in the same kIngdom Kiyoomi rules.”
Aran looks at Kita with a smile, “Guess we’ll be hanging out a lot then, keeping a watchful eye.”
“What could go wrong?” Kita says with a shrug, “Everything about their life is already planned in the files.”
“I hope yer right” Aran says with a sigh.
“Attention, attention.”
“Whenever you’re done going through your person’s file please be ready to begin watching them.”
“Guess that’s our cue,” Kita says with a grin.
And it begins.
