Chapter Text

29 year old Steve McGarrett, former navy seal and now leader of the illustrious work force 5-O, stepped out of his truck and pushed the door closed. His piercing green and hazel eyes scanning the parking lot, making sure everything was normal before he headed up to the 5-O offices.

His best friends and partners Chin Ho Kelly and Kono Kalakaua, were already inside, and they greeted him when he entered. They were already at the computer board looking at some files and pictures.

“What do we have for today?” Steve questioned, eyes quickly scanning over the information.

“HPD asked us for a little help on a case they are investigating.” Kono explained. “They got a disturbance call from someone complaining about their neighbors. When they got to the house, they found a man laying badly beaten and shot through the shoulder, on the floor of his living room. The man told them that his son just went crazy and tried to kill him, but they have been unable to find the son and question him.”

“What are the names?” Steve asked. “The man looks slightly familiar.”

“You may have seen him around here before.” Chin answered this time. “His name is Richard Williams, he’s a retired cop, now works at a bar doing security. His son, is Daniel Williams, known as Danny by his father, age 17.”

“How is Richard doing?” Steve questioned. “Do the doctors know if he’s going to be alright?”

“Yes.” Kono replied, brushing a loose strand of hair back from her face. “I talked to his doctor and they said its nothing that time and some PT won’t fix.”

“That’s good.” Steve said with a slight sigh of relief. “I can just imagine how well this search would go if the retired cop had died.”

“Yeah.” Chin agreed. “I think that’s why Duke wants us to take point on the search, since we don’t have any ties to the victim.”

Steve nodded his agreement. “So how are looking in the search for Danny? Does he have friends on the island that we can talk to? Or maybe other relatives?”

“From what Richard Williams said, Danny is a loner. He did his schooling online through high school and never made any friends on the island that he knows of.” Kone replied, sweeping through some information on the screen. “He doesn’t have much in the way of online stuff either, no online accounts or profiles that we can find. It says that he worked for an auto shop here for a few months, but quit just a week ago.”

“Well that might be a good place to start.” Chin said thoughtfully. “Maybe his boss can tell us some stuff about him.”

“Good idea.” Steve agreed. “Get us the address, Kono, and we’ll go check it out.”

“Just sent it to your phone boss.” Kono said with a grin. “I’ll keep digging and see if I can find anything else about him online.”

˜

Twenty minutes later Steve and Chin pulled up in front of the shop in Steve’s big chevy pickup truck.

“It looks like a pretty nice place.” Chin remarked as they left the truck. “I wonder why he left?”

“I don’t know.” Steve replied. “But hopefully we will be able to find out.”

Pushing open the door and walking into the air conditioned building, Steve and Chin Immediately made their way over to the service desk.

“Excuse me.” Steve stopped in front of a bored looking girl in her mid-twenties. “Is the owner here?”

The girls name tag read Karen. “Yeah, Mr. Kulia is in his office.”

“Can you please get him for us?” Chin asked politely. “Tell him 5-O needs to talk to him.”

The girl immediately looked curious, glancing them over before nodding. “Sure, I’ll be right back.”

With that Karen hurried off to the back of the shop and disappeared down a hallway.

A few minutes later Karen appeared again, following a kind looking man in his fifties

“Gentlemen, how can I help you?” The man asked.

“Your Mr. Kulia, the owner of this shop?” Steve asked as he reached to shake his hand.

“Please, call me Henry.” Henry answered. “And yes, I own this place.”

“My name is Chin, and this is Steve. I was wondering if we could talk to you for a few minutes.” Chin told him. “It’s about someone who used to work for you.”

“Of course.” Henry nodded. “Lets step outside and I’ll help you if I can.”

As soon as they were standing outside in the shade of a tree, Steve got started.

“Do you remember having a young man named Daniel Williams working for you?”

Henry got a wary look on his face. “Danny? Yes, of course, I remember him. Such a smart and kind young man, extremely talented.”

Steve and Chin exchanged looks before pressing on.

“We heard he quit about a week ago.” Chin said. “Can you tell us why?”

Henry nodded, looking sad. “Yeah, he got in a fight with a couple of the other young men who used to work for me, and even though he wasn’t to blame, he still decided to leave.”

“What was the fight about?” Steve asked.

“A couple of the older boys tried to mess with Karen as she was leaving the shop, Danny stepped in to protect her and got into a fight.” Henry replied. “Karen wasn’t hurt, but it shook her up pretty bad. I’m not sure why Danny felt he had to leave though, probably had something to do with his father if I had to guess.”

“What do you mean?” Steve frowned. “Did Danny ever talk to you about his father? Did they not get along?”

“Look.” Henry sighed, crossing his arms. “I saw the news this morning, talking about how Richard Williams was shot and beaten in his own home, and I can tell you right now that Danny was not the kind of person who would do something like that.”

“Well, even if he didn’t, we still need to rule him out as a suspect.” Steve said calmly. “So did Danny ever talk about his home life?”

“No, but he didn’t need to.” Henry replied, looking sad. “I have an adopted brother, and when he was little, he acted just like Danny does now. Always nervous, eager to please, flinches at every sudden movement and loud noise, always afraid of doing something wrong. I don’t need anyone to tell me that boy has been abused, I can read it on his face and in what he says or does.”

“So your saying that Richard was abusing his son?” Steve asked in surprise.

Henry nodded. “I’d bet my whole shop that boy was beaten at least once by his old man.”

Steve swallowed, not liking where this case was going. Finding out that a cop was possibly abusing his son, this was not good at all.

“Do you think its possible that Danny could have shot his dad on accident?” Chin asked. “Maybe he tried to hurt Danny again and they got into a scuffle. You said Danny knows how to fight.”

Henry shrugged. “Its possible I guess. Besides that one time with Karen though, I’ve never seen Danny act aggressive.”

“Do you have any idea where Danny might go?” Steve asked.

“No, I’m afraid not.” Henry shook his head. “That boy was extremely quiet and secretive.”

“Well, thank you for all of your help.” Chin said, reaching out to give him a card. “If you can think of anything that might help us find him, please don’t hesitate to call us.”

“I will.” Henry replied. “I hope you can find him and prove his innocence.”

Chin nodded. “We will certainly try.”

Getting into the truck, Steve let out a sigh. “This case just got a whole lot more complicated.”

Chin nodded, and they spent the rest of the drive back to the Palace in silence.
