Akira has always considered himself to be a selfless person. He does his best to make everyone in his life happy, even if it means he’ll get hurt in the long run. It doesn’t matter, though. A little bit of pain is worth it as long as everything works out for his friends. For the people he cares about.
He knows who Akechi is. What he is. A puppet, a doll, a dog. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and that link just so happens to be Akechi. It would be easy to take him out, but that’s not who Akira is. That’s not who Joker is, or the other Phantom Thieves. They aren’t murderers. They’re better than that. Even the most evil, the absolute worst of humanity, can be eradicated without the use of lethal force. The system they have developed is a good one. Changing hearts is… it’s worked up until now. Until now.
That’s what Akira is scared of.
Why his thoughts have gone dark.
Persona users cannot develop a Palace, nor do they have a Shadow wandering around the depths of Mementos. If one were to wreak havoc in the collective unconsciousness, then they shall. There’s no way to stop them. Their only option is to go through with the plan. The plan that may or may not work. The plan with so many hypotheticals that it makes Akira dizzy, because if anything goes wrong then it’s game over. There is no restart. There is no retry. There is no second chance. He’s done.
Akechi is being controlled, that much is obvious. They already have a name- Masayoshi Shido- but it’s not like there’s enough time to do anything with that information. They can't confront Akechi directly, and they don’t have the keywords to Shido’s Palace to try to change his heart. It’s too late anyway, with only a week to go until they steal Sae’s heart and the plan is put into action. The plan that isn't going to work. The plan that will fail. They’re sending him to his death, aren’t they? He’s going to die.

The boy in front of him, lonely and hurting, is going to kill him.

Akechi sighs, tilting his head back. He’s watching a plane pass by. There’s a slight breeze, and he tucks some bothersome strands of hair behind his ears.
In a week, that hand will be holding a gun. Finger on the trigger. They’ll lock eyes, and Akechi’s will be empty because there is no need to act when the show is done and over with. Akira should have left when he had the chance to do so. When he was first pulled into the Metaverse. When he moved to this city. When he was arrested. There were signs, and he ignored them. All of them. He’s trying to blame others, but it was always his fault. Life isn’t unfair, it gives you opportunities. It provides paths. It’s up to you to take the opportunities, and he declined. To choose the right path, and he chose wrong.
But not this time. Not now. He’s still alive, and he’s not going to give up. This is his moment. To choose to live or to die. He can’t avoid it any longer, or he’ll end up like Futaba’s mother. Ohya’s partner. They dug too deep, and they paid the price.
He’s trapped in a locked cell that he has the key to. The answer is right there, but what’s behind the door? What if he’s digging himself into a deeper hole?
