Work Text:

Tiny Dís, daughter of Thrain, son of Thror, was born in 2760 to the ereborian royal family. Youngest of three, Tiny Dís was strong willed, stubborn, of sarcastic humor and nearly identical to her oldest brother Thorin.

Tiny Dís was fond of honeycakes, ponyriding, annoying her brothers and sword practice. As a toddler she had the habit of sneaking around past curfew and never getting in trouble due to her master in Big Doe Eyes.

When she was 10 she saw her home burn and heard her mother's blood curling scream as she fell with her people.

----

Dís was born in 2770 to a ruined family made up mostly of her and her brothers. Dís was a quiet child. She couldn't sleep without being curled around one of her brothers and didn't quite understand why father wasn't around much anymore but she never asked.

Dís suffered of constant nightmares and couldn't stare at the candle fire for too long, but she was strong. She'd hug her brother Frerin when he got that distant look in his eyes and always reminded Thorin to eat.

Dís soon learned that, without her mother or the servants, things wouldn't get done around the house, so she managed. She always cleaned after herself, obeyed her curfew, hugged her brothers and never told anyone when she got too hungry.

By the time her grandfather got murdered, she was a tween and no longer missed her dolls or remembered her mother's voice.

----

Lady Dís was born in 2799 with the death of her older brother Frerin. Amidst the War of Dwarves and Orcs there was no time for grieving, no time for remembering how she liked to braid her brother's long blond hair, how he used to sneak her dessert under the table when they were little kids, how he never stopped trying to make her laugh. How he used to clean her tears at night and how he learned how to wood carve just to make her toys.

When father is half mad and Thorin could die everyday fighting, there was no time for anything. So Lady Dís kept going.

While the males were out fighting someone had to make sure that the wives and children were well fed. When you're no longer a princess but people still look at you for guidance anyway, there is no time for anything else but to help as best as you can.

----

When father died, now a young adult, Lady Dís had long decided that she was much too grown and had suffered too much to grieve with the same intensity a toddler grieves her mother. She was wrong.

----

Lady Dís, now a well matured adult and co-leader of her wandering people, found love.

It was a strange thing, really. Tulí was a miner, from a poor family, native to the Blue Montains and the youngest sibling of four. Two of his siblings were merchants and residing in Erebor when the dragon came, and his only remaining sister was also a miner. He was kind-hearted, had a beautiful smile and gave her his mother's hair bead as a courting gift.

He made her smile again and she loved him more than life itself. Tulí didnt mind that she had days where she could barely lift herself from her bed, he didn't mind that Thorin hated him and he didn't mind that Dís couldn't properly marry him.

He gave her her two most precious treasures in the form of rowdy sons who were sure to drive her into an early grave and then promptly died in a mining accident.

----

If asked, Filí and Kilí would describe their mother as the most impressive dwarf to have ever lived. Mother is strong and could lift Uncle Thorin off the ground if she wanted. Mother gives the best hugs and has magical kisses that can cure any knee scrap.

Mother is respected all around the world and everybody loves her. Mother always makes sure they have enough to eat and never lets her sons realize she goes without sometimes. Mother lets Filí take his favorite wood figures to bed and tells Kilí two bedtime stories everyday.

Mother is the best teacher of all time and makes even the most boring subjects seem entertaining. She taught them their letters and numbers and prepares them to be the amazing princes she knows they can become.

Sometimes Mother has bad days and they all form a big cuddle pile and stay in bed all day, but that's okay. They love sleeping in, anyway.

----

Lady Dís seriously considers kinslaying when informed that her idiot brother is dragging her children into a suicide mission. She's convinced that the day she has a single moment of peace will be her first day in Mahal's halls.

"I can't stop them from going, Dís. They're adults capable of making their own decisions" Dís snorts "and you know we need all the help we can get" says Thorin, as if he's talking about random dwarves and not his nephews.

"They're not 'all the help you can get', they're my children, Thorin! What would they even do?! Kilí is barely out of his teen years, he's not a warrior!"

"Kilí is one of our best bowmen and Filí is our best knife thrower. They'll be of use."

Against her better judgment and with a lot of begging from her boys, she let's them go. They're parted with badly covered tears, forehead kisses and two engraved tokens to make sure they come back safe and sound.

----

They don't come back.

----

Her people look at her for guidance. There are caravans to be sent out, supplies to be gathered, families to reunite. She holds strong, leads her people, returns to the mountain.

The moment her eyes lay upon Erebor, Dís vomits.

----

She couldn't see the bodies. By the time she reached the mountain they would've already started to rot. If she thinks about it too much she gets dizzy.

----

Dís, daughter of Thrain, sister of Thorin and Frerin, wife of Tulí, mother of Filí and Kilí, last of the direct line of Durin the Deathless, Princess Under The Mountain dies of a broken heart, by her sons' graves.

She spent her last years helping her people settle in Erebor and her last big project was a tapestry of her family tree, that now hangs in the throne room of Erebor.

Dís was convinced her first moment of peace would be her first day at Mahal's halls.

She was right.

Notes:

I couldnt stop thinking about how Dís was the last member of her family and how we have no canon information about her besides that she exists.
