Chapter Text

When Count Edmont set out to pay a visit to the residence of House Faurchetemps, he knew he would not find a grand manse he was familiar with in the Pillars. The very fact that Lady Marielle had to approach him for support in asserting her claim as heir was proof enough. The Vault has been known to drag their feet on matters of succession and peerage without a little 'monetary compensation'. It's something that has always sat wrong with him, and why he promised her his full support with nary a question.

Still, he had not expected to find what was less than a cottage, butted cheek-by-jowl with other sad, ageing bedsits close enough to the Skysteel Manufactory that he could hear the hiss and thump of the auto-hammers. Indeed, the only way he knows this is the right place is the Faurchetemps crest with peeling paint upon the door. As the Count gazes upon the door, he understands a little better how the late Lady Faurchetemps fell ill and faded away. There is little hope in this place, for one who used to mix with Pillars society.

He takes a deep breath, and knocks.

The children are well. Mahoix - the little boy - is shy, hiding behind his nursemaid's skirts. Although not quite Calamity-born, all he has known is the endless snow and cold. He has also yet to grow into his ears (which happen to be the only part of him that Edmont can currently see). Alseanne regards him with no little suspicion; which is sensible, and he truly despises that such a demeanour is sensible. Children should be able to remain children for as long as possible. Yes, their clothes are patched - but their hair is well-groomed and shines in the candlelight. Their round faces show none of the harshness that true hunger brings, despite living in little more than a hovel.

And it only takes a glance at the two adults to understand why. Alexandre, the Faurchetemps' seneschal and Helene-Marie, the Hyuran nursemaid both share the look of the hungry. They also look wary, as if they expect him to say "I'm taking the children, your work is done.". Truthfully, they are half-right. He is here for the children, but also for them. House Faurchetemps has ever been a loyal vassal to House Fortemps; but House Fortemps has not been a good lord. Edmont intends to change that, starting now.

"I am here with an offer. You do not have to accept it immediately, or even at all." Count Edmont bows his head, and tries to ignore the burning guilt in his throat. "I merely ask that you hear me out, and consider it."

Notes:

Edmont is trying his best, I guess? Also House Faurchetemps came directly from the name generator, and I just ran with it. (love me some fantasy catholicism)
