Work Text:
Jongseong does not know when he started feeling things.
He does not even know what he had for lunch yesterday nor what he had for breakfast earlier that morning. Jongseong is not sure if he had done grocery shopping over the weekend or if his mother went over to bring him home cooked food and her kimchi .
Jongseong is not sure if he had submitted his project on time or if he has an exam in Calculus tomorrow or if it was moved to next week. He is not sure if he had watered his succulents or if he had taken out the trash.
But there is one thing he knows for sure.
Jongseong is sure of bright smiles, pretty eyes, a soft voice, loud laugh, and big heart.
He is absolutely sure that he likes his best friend’s little brother.
✿
The first time they met was when he was in his first year in Senior High School.
He was with his friends in the cafeteria for lunch that time, they were talking to themselves about the usual random things. Actually, Jaeyun and Jongseong are the only ones who are talking their ears off, the other two are just nodding and listening.
“Oh,” Heeseung quietly exclaims then, looking over Jongseong’s head. They look over the direction the oldest male is looking at and what they see are two short males walking over the line for food.
“Do you know them?” Sunghoon asks as he continues eating his lunch. Heeseung smiles a little before going back to eating his bulgogi soup. “Yeah, one of them is my brother.” He says.
Jaeyun chokes at that, some rice flying out of his mouth and successfully hitting Sunghoon’s arm which made the latter groan in disgust. “Whoa, you mean your little brother? The one you speak so fondly of?” Jongseong asks, genuinely curious.
Heeseung hums, “Yep. He recently moved back to Seoul after living with our grandparents in Suwon for two years. He's fifteen now.” He says. Jongseong nods in acknowledgement.
They have heard a lot about Heeseung’s infamous little brother who is two years younger than them. Kim Seonwoo, who prefers to be called Sunoo (according to Heeseung), is Heeseung’s beloved little brother. They were both born in Namyangju but later on moved to Seoul when Heeseung was four and Sunoo was two. Sunoo went to live with their grandparents in Suwon when the boy was thirteen. Jongseong does not really know what he looks like anymore, as Heeseung only showed them a picture of them together when they were in grade school. Although from what he remembers, Sunoo has small pointed eyes, chubby cheeks, and a bright smile. And from how Heeseung speaks of his own brother, they know how kind and nice the boy is.
“Yah, dongsaeng. ” Heeseung calls, earning their attention as well as the two familiar boys from before. They were similar in height, both have small, cute faces. The one who reacted to Heeseung’s call was the one on the left, his small eyes widening in surprise. His shock immediately turns to excitement.
“Hyung!” He exclaims, motioning his friend to come towards their table. The other male could only smile in response, following Sunoo quietly.
Sunoo’s excitement flows to them, as if it’s contagious. Jongseong could see Jaeyun and Sunghoon’s genuine interest and how their eyes lit up at the sight of the younger male skipping towards them.
“Hi, I’m Kim Sunoo!” Sunoo beams, “This is Jungwon. We’re both in ninth grade.” He grins. The kid beside him, Jungwon, bows his head in greeting.
Sunoo and Jungwon decide to sit at their table as Jaeyun and Heeseung both told them to.
Jongseong, who is normally talkative and friendly towards new people, is quiet as he observes the two kids. Jungwon, Jongseong thinks, is also chatty as soon as he gets comfortable. He was quiet when the two of them sat down but as soon as they introduced themselves, the kid started speaking to them as much as Sunoo does. He has a bright smile, deep dimples on his cheeks and wide, round eyes. He’s fun, he thinks. Cute too, he adds.
As for Sunoo… Jongseong thinks the kid is bubbly and really friendly. He is the complete opposite of his brother. If Heeseung is quiet and quite introverted, then Sunoo is his loud counterpart. As soon as he starts talking, words and topics come out naturally as if he has known them for years. Jaeyun seems excited, as he engages in conversation with Sunoo. Out of their friend group, he and Jaeyun are the extroverted ones who are in charge of the talking but Jongseong prefers to stay silent today as he wants to observe Heeseung’s brother.
As Jongseong watches, he begins to look at Sunoo’s features more. He notices the younger male’s eyes first, how they form crescents as he laughs. The normally small, pointed eyes become tiny crescents when he smiles or when he finds something funny. Jongseong wonders if Sunoo could still see anything while laughing. He notices the younger male’s laugh next. It’s loud, something that Jongseong has not heard before. It’s loud but still soft and endearing. The kind of noise Jongseong wants to hear everyday. Jongseong also notices Sunoo’s cheeks after. They were naturally chubby and soft looking from where he sits. His cheeks rise every time he smiles or laughs, like bread baking in the oven. Jongseong thinks they’re adorable.
Jongseong thinks Heeseung’s younger brother is adorable. Endearing, even. Managed to capture not just one heart, but all his brother’s friends’ hearts. Jongseong thinks Sunoo would be a great brother.
Jongseong would want Sunoo as a younger brother.
✿✿✿
Years had passed since their first meeting in that bustling cafeteria when they were teenagers.
After being friends with Sunoo and his best friend Jungwon, their friend group naturally became bigger as they continued their remaining years in high school. They would eat lunch together and if they could, they would walk home together. Even though he does not have to commute everyday, Jongseong prefers the walk to the bus stop and ride the bus together with his friends. When they graduated high school, they still kept in touch. Even though the four of them are going to college soon, their group chat that they made when they were in high school is still active. Mostly because of Sunoo and Jaeyun sending memes to each other. But it was still fun. They would still talk to each other from time to time.
Sunoo and Jungwon are going to graduate high school this coming spring. The four of them are already planning to prepare something for their two dongsaeng. Jaeyun was actually the one who suggested the idea, and Jongseong who immediately agreed even without hearing nor knowing what he was planning. Heeseung agreed next, saying that he wants to do something special for his brother and Jungwon. Sunghoon agreed too, as he had grown closer to the two kids in their small group.
The plan is simple. They would show up to their graduation ceremony, all with a huge tarpaulin banner with both the kids’ faces and a congratulatory message. Jongseong suggested doing it by hand, but because of their busy schedule in the university, none of them had the time to do banners. So Heeseung, being an IT major, volunteered to make and edit the picture they will put in the banner. The four of them already agreed to take a leave of absence from university so they could attend the two youngest’s graduation ceremony. Jaeyun also suggested getting two bouquets for them.
Jongseong actually doesn’t know what he could give the two for their graduation. He thought of cooking for them, but it would be a hassle, and he’s afraid that he will miss going to the actual ceremony if he chooses to prepare food for them. Jaeyun suggested bringing them and their families to a restaurant, which Jongseong immediately agreed to.
So that brings them here, at this moment. Jaeyun and Heeseung are holding the banner from each side while Sunghoon and Jongseong hold the bouquets. The Kim family and the Yang family are both by their sides, laughing at them and thanking them for their support. Jongseong feels a little embarrassed too, but he is happy. He feels happy for their two younger friends. Seeing them finish high school in front of their eyes gives them a feeling of proudness. From those small ninth graders they first met, the two are finally graduating high school (still tiny, though).
As Jungwon’s name is called, the four of them cheered, clapping and screaming his name loudly. Jungwon looks at them and ducks his head in embarrassment for a second. He grabs his diploma and bows in front of them. He does not forget to wave his arms to them though, face bright despite feeling embarrassed. When it is Sunoo’s turn, they cheer again. Four young adults screaming. What a lovely sight. Sunoo is laughing on the stage as he walks, bowing in front after he gets his diploma and waving enthusiastically towards them after. Jongseong laughs lightly, feeling warmth in his chest upon seeing Sunoo’s bright smile as he walks down the stage.
“Congratulations, Won.” Jongseong says to Jungwon as the two stars of the day walk towards them. Jungwon thanked him with a hug, which Jongseong happily returned. Jungwon pulls away from him and walks towards their other friends to hug them and thank them one by one.
Jongseong’s gaze immediately falls to Sunoo. Kim Sunoo, looking so bright and glowing under the sun and falling cherry blossoms. Sunoo is talking to his mom and dad as Jongseong waits, the bouquet still in his hand. When Sunoo turns to look at him, their eyes meet. Jongseong’s heart skips a beat as Sunoo’s smile grows wider. The younger male skips towards him, and Jongseong feels his palms getting clammy.
“Hi.” Sunoo greets with a wide smile and his pretty eyes. Jongseong feels his breath hitch at the sudden proximity, Sunoo merely two feet away from him.
“Hi,” Jongseong says, eloquently. Sunoo laughs softly at that.
“Congratulations, Sunoo-ya.” He says after a few seconds. The bright smile Sunoo gives him could probably rival the sun above them, Jongseong thinks. So bright and lovely.
Jongseong gives the bouquet to Sunoo who happily accepts, beaming at the sight of sunflowers. “Sunflowers!” He exclaims, grinning widely at him. Jongseong smiles, nodding his head. He remembers telling Sunghoon to get a sunflower bouquet for Sunoo as the younger male had mentioned that they are his favourite flowers in a random conversation they had.
Sunoo looks back at him and wraps his arms around him. “Thank you, hyung.” He says. Jongseong could feel his heart hammering in his chest, and he hopes that Sunoo does not hear it. He wraps his arms around the younger one too, one hand reaching up to caress Sunoo’s soft hair.
“No need to thank me.” He mumbles against Sunoo’s hair.
Jongseong could smell a faint scent of strawberries.
✿✿✿
Sunoo and Jungwon both decide to go to the university where the four of them are currently studying at. Heeseung, an IT major, Sunghoon who majors in Engineering, and both Jaeyun and Jongseong who major in Business Management.
He is roommates with Heeseung in an apartment unit near their university—as well as Jaeyun and Sunghoon. The four of them first resided in the university dorms in their first year, but decided to get apartment units in their sophomore year. Heeseung had mentioned that Sunoo and Jungwon will reside in the dorms first like them. Jungwon decided to major in Architecture and Sunoo in Fine Arts.
“Jongseong hyung!”
Jongseong stops walking, head immediately snapping towards the direction of the voice. There are only a few people who call him by his name, deciding to use his English name upon entering university. He spots Sunoo jogging towards him, a wide smile on his face.
“Sunoo-ya, never thought I’d run to you here.” He greets. Sunoo grins, “Me too, hyung! My building is on the opposite side of the campus.” He says.
“Are you on your break?” Jongseong asks as they continue walking. Sunoo hums, “Yeah. I was supposed to see Jungwonnie right now but he texted me saying that he couldn’t come because of an emergency in one of their subjects.” He pouts. Jongseong almost reached up to pinch his cheek.
“Hmm, I actually don’t have classes at this time. And Jaeyun is with Hoon right now. Do you want me to accompany you for the meantime until your next class?” He asks. Sunoo brightens up at that, “Really? That would be great, hyung!” He beams.
They talk as they walk towards a small café inside the campus. They both decide to stay there as Sunoo mentions getting hungry.
When they have settled inside, Jongseong looks around. The café is warm, the whole size of the building is just right. It feels homey too, it give you the feeling like you have come home after a long day. Sunoo talks, excitedly telling him about his day. Jongseong listens intently, watching Sunoo’s eyes and lips. After three years of knowing Sunoo, Jongseong thinks nothing much really has changed with the younger.
Sunoo still has the small, pointed eyes that disappear to crescents when he laughs, still has the same bright smile. Sunoo still has his rounded cheeks that Jongseong reminds of bread. Freshly baked bread—those that came from the oven. Although it was obvious that Sunoo matured, growing slightly taller than his height in middle school, he still remained a few centimeters shorter than Jongseong though. Sunoo had also grown mature, personality wise. He still has the same innocence and bright, bubbly trait he has since middle school, but Jongseong knows that Sunoo grew up to be an observant, caring person.
“You didn’t change.” Jongseong absentmindedly comments, looking at the cake Sunoo is eating. The (ugly) colour of mint green makes his stomach curl. Sunoo hums happily, “Mint choco is the best.” He says in between bites.
All Jongseing could do is nod his head.
The first time he saw Sunoo eat mint choco was when they were in high school. The six of them went to an ice cream parlor near their school after their midterm exams. Jongseong could still remember the look of disgust on Sunghoon’s face when Sunoo excitedly jumped at the sight of the mint chocolate flavour in the display. Although Jongseong could not understand how someone could enjoy the taste of toothpaste and chocolate in their mouth, he felt happy seeing the younger male excited over his favourite ice cream flavour.
Now years later, Sunoo has not changed. He still has this weird obsession with mint choco that none of them could understand why. But he looks happy, so Jongseong is happy.
Jongseong then asks Sunoo about his day, if something exciting happened, or if he met someone new. The younger male’s eyes light up at the mention of his day, he then starts to talk about his morning subjects and his classmates and even his professors. He also mentions meeting a new classmate and seatmate in one of his subjects. “His name is Riki and he’s Japanese.” Sunoo says with a smile, “He moved to South Korea last year and has been studying Hangul for two years. He was so cute, stumbling over words. But his Korean is really good, a little bit of practice still with his pronunciation but good.” He says.
They continue talking over their two hour break, it was mostly Sunoo who does the talking but Jongseong is content listening to the younger male talk. This is also something that did not change over the years they have known each other, Sunoo talking and Jongseong happily indulging the younger male by listening.
They part ways after their break, Sunoo still has classes until six and Jongseong until five. The older male contemplated to ask if Sunoo has time to grab dinner later after their classes, but Jongseong is a coward. As he watches Sunoo walk away from him, he could hear Sunghoon’s annoying voice at the back of his head nagging him about how much of a coward he is. Jongseong is not going to deny that fact.
He shakes his head and starts to walk to his building, hoping that the weird feeling in his chest would go away soon.
Ah, he stops in his tracks. He forgot to compliment Sunoo today.
Sunoo looks absolutely gorgeous in blonde.
✿✿✿
“Hi Jay!”
Jongseong looks up. He sees a guy that he is sure is his classmate from one of his subjects. He is shit at remembering names, so sue him.
“Hi.” He manages to say with a small smile. The guy grins wide, taking a seat beside him. Jongseong does not mind him, they’re classmates, and Jongseong is not rude.
“What are you doing?” The guy asks.
“Oh, I just finished typing a draft for my paper.” He says, pressing the save button on his document. The guy hums beside him, scooting nearer, which makes Jongseong confused. Why is this guy pressing himself to him too much? There is still a whole space in front of them.
And then, the guy starts talking—Jongseong has no idea what he is saying so he pretends to listen as he continues to work on his laptop. As the guy (he seriously needs to know his name) continues, Jongseong’s ears are starting to melt at how fast and loud this guy is speaking. He prays that Jaeyun would come faster so he could have an excuse to leave this guy.
As if someone heard his prayer, he sees Jaeyun walking towards their table. Jongseong had already turned off his laptop five minutes ago, ready to dash out. Jaeyun looks at him and the guy beside his friend with one of his eyebrows raised. Jongseong could only shrug his shoulders. “Hey man,” Jaeyun greets, albeit hesitantly.
The guy beside Jongseong stops talking (finally). He looks up at Jaeyun with a frown, however as soon as he realizes who it was, his frown quickly changes to a wide smile. “Hi! I’m Kim Taeyong.” He beams. Jongseong mentally nods, happy to finally learn his name after listening to him talk for twenty minutes. Although Jongseong shamelessly admits that he really was not listening at all. Jongseong stands up, grabbing his laptop and carefully placing it in his bag. He looks at Jaeyun first who still has an eyebrow raised then to Taeyong beside him. “Hey, sorry but we have to go.” He says.
Taeyong could only pout, “Aw but I was enjoying talking to you..” He whines. Jongseong mentally snorts. I did not even utter a single word. He thinks. “Anyway, I’ll see you later!” Taeyong beams after a few seconds. The guy grins as he stands up, winking at Jongseong before strutting back towards his giggling friends at a nearby table.
Jaeyun could not hide the teasing smirk forming on his lips. Jongseong deadpans, shaking his head and begins walking. Jaeyun snickers beside him, elbow poking at his side.
“Man, what was that?” He asks, still snickering. Jongseong groaned, “He’s one of my classmates that I didn't know the name of until five minutes ago.” He says. Jaeyun laughs at that, “Bro, he looked so smitten. He was obviously hitting on you. What was he saying earlier before I came?” He asks.
Jongseong shrugs his shoulders, “Don’t know. Wasn’t really listening. He suddenly sat beside me and started talking. Didn’t understand what he was saying.”
Jaeyun lets out a snort at that, shaking his head. “That’s… Cold. Not your type, then?” He asks.
Jongseong laughs a little. “No. I’m not looking for a relationship right now either.” He mumbles.
It’s... True. The last time he was in a serious relationship was last year—they lasted for four months before mutually ending it because Jongseong thinks they’re better off as friends. They are still friends, occasionally bumping to each other on campus. Youngbin and he first met in the freshmen orientation in their first week at university. They hit it off after sitting next to each other and eventually started dating after two months. They were good, they did not argue, they went on dates. However, after four months of dating, he and Youngbin decided to break up and stay as friends. They part ways in mutual terms, no grudge. Although sometimes when they meet up with some of their mutual friends, Jongseong is sure that they are not as close as before. They talk, catch up with each other, but then that’s that. Nothing more. Jongseong is fine with it, he does not really need to stay close with anybody aside from his close friends.
“Hm, well that’s sad. Some of our classmates are asking me if you’re into dating right now.” Jaeyun casually says, waving to someone he was acquainted with as they walk. Jongseong chuckles, “Apologies to them, then.” He says.
Dating… Jongseong is not really looking for commitment right now. Besides, he is only in his second year in college. The first semester just started.
However, the word itself reminds him of something. It reminds him of pretty eyes, soft smile, and soft cheeks.
✿✿✿
When Jongseong meets the Japanese kid Sunoo keeps on mentioning oh so fondly, he is surprised. He expected some smaller, soft looking boy, not some blonde guy who is taller than Sunoo (and Jongseong himself) with piercing eyes and great physique. When Sunoo and Jungwon (apparently, they became friends after Sunoo dragged the guy to their weekly hangout before) talk about Nishimura Riki, Jongseong and the others expected someone like the two younger males. Shorter, bubbly, and a social butterfly. Riki is definitely not short, he’s a little bubbly, sure. But not a social butterfly. He looks intimidating enough that Jongseong knows that the other students are scared of this kid.
But Riki is cute, Jongseong admits. He’s stall and kind of intimidating, but he’s still young, a little younger than Sunoo and Jungwon, so he’s automatically cute in the other four boys’ books. Riki likes dance, and is absolutely good at it too. He also likes to tease Sunoo because according to him, “Sunoo hyung is the cutest when he’s upset.” Jongseong agrees to that. It was Heeseung who told them that fact before, when they were in high school, so it became Sunghoon’s daily routine to at least annoy Sunoo once a day just to see the poor boy pout.
Eventually, Riki was adopted to the group. He was added to their group chat by Sunoo. Riki became their maknae, no longer Jungwon. Although those two will forever be their babies. Much to their annoyance, because he quotes “We’re not babies anymore. We’re young adults!” Jungwon argues with his big bambi eyes and Sunoo’s bulging cheeks as he pouts. Yeah… Not babies anymore, right.
Overall, their days went on as per usual. Sometimes they go out together, sometimes they go by pairs, or whoever is free at the moment. Jongseong is a busy man. He has full classes everyday and he occasionally goes to his father’s company to help and learn.
“Jongseong hyung?” Sunoo’s soft voice calls. He looks at the younger male. Sunoo purses his lips, taking tiny steps towards him and then sitting cross legged beside him.
“Yeah?” Jongseong asks, eyes still focused on the screen of his laptop. He was in the middle of revising one of his assignments when Sunoo ceremoniously barged in Jongseong and Heeseung’s apartment unit, a plastic of food in his hand. Heeseung is not yet done with his classes until six so Jongseong is the only one at the unit.
Sunoo hums, scooting closer to Jongseong and resting his cheek on the older male’s arm. Jongseong feels his breath hitch at the sudden movement, fingers momentarily stopping. He looks over at the younger male, and seeing Sunoo looking so dejected and pouty makes Jongseong sigh. Their lovely Sunoo, so quiet and sad. He is not used to this kind of Sunoo. Jongseong presses the save button on his laptop and then closes it before shifting his body to face the younger male.
Sunoo’s usual bright eyes and high cheekbones are nowhere to be found. Instead, what Jongseong has been faced with is a sullen Sunoo, eyes cast downwards, his fingers fiddling with the hem of Jongseong’s sweater.
“What’s the matter, hm?” Jongseong softly tuts, reaching out to gently place his hand on top of the other’s hands. Sunoo bites his lips, and a soft sigh escapes his mouth.
“It’s… Stupid.” Sunoo says, voice small and soft. If Jongseong was sitting further, he sure won’t hear what the other male had said.
“Hey, it’s clearly bothering you so it’s not stupid.” Jongseong says, giving the younger male’s hand a gentle squeeze. Sunoo looks up at him, eyes resembling a puppy’s that makes Jongseong’s heart melt a little.
“It’s not supposed to bother me that much, but it did and I feel stupid for creating such a big deal out of it.” Sunoo says. Jongseong squeezes his hands again to urge him to continue, “I have Art History earlier, right.” He says. Jongseong hums, nodding his head. “And the professor in that subject does not like me.” He groans, “Like, she really does not like like me. She always does her best to put me in the spotlight, calling me during class and asking me questions that she should be teaching. I know most of her questions because I do read before coming to class, but it does get annoying.” He inhales, “My classmates could only look at me in sympathy every time she does that to me.” He pauses, his fingers no longer clutching Jongseong’s sweater, he’s now playing the elder’s fingers.
“Today though… I woke up with a headache from staying up last night finishing an assignment. You know the headache that goes from the back of your head towards your temple… Yeah, that kind of headache. Anyway, as I was not in the mood for anything, I have Art History today.” Sunoo pouts, “As per usual, my professor called me, asked me questions that only made my headache worse. She also made me feel bad after she scolded me when I did not answer one of her questions correctly.” He sighs, leaning to rest his head on the sofa.
Jongseong feels bad, he could see how tired Sunoo is. His usual bright face looks so dim, like it’s a lightbulb that needs to be changed. The elder rubs his thumb over the hand clutching his. Sunoo watches their hands.
“I’m sorry Seongie hyung… I didn’t mean to interrupt you and take up your time.” Sunoo mumbles.
Jongseong shakes his head, “Don’t be sorry, Sunoo-ya… It’s okay. Don’t invalidate your own emotions.” He softly says, reaching his free hand to gently remove the hair touching Sunoo’s eyes. “Hey.” Jongseong calls, “It’s okay to feel bad, hm? It’s normal. You can feel bad. It’s not stupid. Okay? You can cry too, if you want Sunoo-ya. There’s nothing wrong with feeling bad.” He says. Sunoo nods his head, although he still looks sad, which Jongseong understands.
The elder reaches up, gently pulling Sunoo’s head towards him. He wraps his arm around the younger male. “You can cry, sunshine. Or you can just sleep if it will make you feel better.” Jongseong softly mumbles against Sunoo’s hair.
Sunoo murmurs something that Jongseong did not understand, but he doesn’t ask anymore. He lets the younger shift and lean his weight over to him. Sunoo sighs as he buries himself in Jongseong’s arms.
Jongseong gently rubs the younger male’s back. He carefully moves them both, telling Sunoo that it’s better to move to the sofa and lie down. Sunoo wordlessly nods his head and follows Jongseong into a more comfortable position on the sofa. Once they are lying on the sofa, Sunoo sighs again, snuggling further into Jongseong’s chest. The latter smiles, resuming on gently rubbing the younger male’s back.
He continues caressing Sunoo’s back until he hears the younger’s breath fall into a rhythm. He laughs softly.
Jongseong is busy… But he could always make time for his favourite dongsaeng. He feels his eyelids getting heavy as time passes by. And after a few minutes, Jongseong falls asleep with Sunoo in his arms.
The sight Heeseung sees as soon as he comes home makes his heart jump out of his chest. He expected Jongseong to be working on his assignments at this time, spectacled eyes glued on his laptop with furrowed eyebrows. What he did not expect is seeing Jongseong asleep and his little brother snuggled in his arms. There is a bowl of cold tteokbokki on the table, and two bottles of cider.
A small snort escapes his lips as he quietly trudges towards his room, steps careful.
Heeseung would always describe his brother as an open book. They could easily read Sunoo like a book. They know when he’s happy, or when he’s sad. Or when he’s upset. Heeseung has long mastered how to read his brother, he could probably tell what Sunoo wants with his eyes closed. He would also describe Sunoo as someone who wears his heart on his sleeves. Too nice, too kind, too trusting. Heeseung remembers how many kids had bullied his brother back in grade school for being too nice, he still remembers how Sunoo would still smile at them, asking them if they want one of his candies. Heeseung knows how kind his brother is, how understanding, and how lovely. When Sunoo first met his friends back in high school, Heeseung did not have doubts that his friends would immediately like Sunoo. His brother has this enigmatic personality that draws people to him.
There is also one thing that Heeseung would describe Sunoo.
Sunoo is dense. Dense as fuck. So freaking oblivious.
Heeseung started realizing things when he was in his last year in high school. When Sunoo and Jungwon were in tenth grade. He saw how he looked (looks, still) at his brother. Heeseung had hunches, he just chose not to say anything. He could see how Jongseong acted around them compared to Sunoo. How attentive he is towards his little brother, how gentle he is. Jongseong would put Sunoo first before himself. Jongseong would spend his time indulging Sunoo’s crazy ideas or he would spend time listening to Sunoo’s endless talk. And that says something because Jongseong talks the most out of them.
Heeseung is sure of one thing about Jongseong. He is sure that Jongseong feels a whole lot in love with his brother.
But Jongseong has not probably realized it yet himself.
Heeseung thinks it’s kind of fun, watching one of his best friends pine over his own little brother. So he won’t say anything, he will wait until the two of them realize their own feelings. Heeseung is sure that Jungwon knows, too. That kid is perceptive. He probably knew from the start.
Anyway, Heeseung will wait. Will watch the two of them dance around each other. He will not say anything, not until one of them gets hurt. Although Heeseung thinks that getting hurt is inevitable. Feeling hurt and pain when you love someone is part of being human, after all.
✿✿✿
“Sorry Sunoo-ya…”” Jungwon whines, burying himself in his best friend. Sunoo laughs, “Why are you apologizing? I told you it’s fine. You don’t need to apologize, Wonnie.” He says, smiling at the pouting male beside him.
Riki is sitting across from them, watching something on his phone. Jaeyun and Sunghoon are sitting on the sofa, eyes glued on the television.
The seven of them are hanging out in Heeseung and Jongseong’s apartment for their weekly catching up—someting that became a habit ever since Sunoo and Jungwon moved to Seoul for college.
While the two best friends cuddle on the floor, Jongseong walks in the living room with a tray in hand. He carefully places the tray on the table. Sunoo was the first to grab a biscuit, looking up and thanking Jongseong who gave him a smile.
“Why is Jungwon latching at you like his life depends on you?” Jongseong asks as he takes a seat on the sofa beside Sunoo’s head.
Jungwon whines again making Sunoo laugh. “He is feeling bad although I have told him several times that it’s fine.” The blonde says. Jongseong raises an eyebrow, “Why does he feel bad?” he asks.
“Sunoo hyung wants to go to the music festival on Saturday. But Jungwon hyung already had plans and couldn’t cancel them.” Riki helpfully supplies, earning a nod from Jongseong and another whine from Jungwon.
“Why are you whining like a kitten, Jungwonnie? I already told you it’s fine. I don’t need to go to the festival. I could always come next year.” Sunoo softly says, he reaches up to play with Jungwon’s hair.
“But you said that your favourite band will perform…” Jungwon mumbles. Sunoo lets out a chuckle, “It’s okay. It doesn’t matter.” He says.
Jongseong ponders for a moment, eyes glancing from Sunoo’s head to the television.
What if…
He sees Heeseung walk towards them, his eyes meeting Jongseong’s. He thinks that the elder knows something he doesn’t, with how Heeseung held his gaze with a knowing smile. Weird.
Later that night, Jongseong lies awake. He stares at the ceiling, phone on top of his chest. His mind wanders again.
He turns to his side and looks at the digital clock on his bedside table. It’s half past one in the morning, yet Jongseong is still awake. Heeseung probably passed out as soon as he laid down his bed earlier after cleaning their living room.
Jongseong turns, his eyes meeting the ceiling once again.
He blinks twice.
He grabs his phone and opens it, the light suddenly blinding him making him hiss a curse. He hurries to open his messages and presses the name of the guy running on his mind since the afternoon.
Jongseong
hey.
you’re probably asleep lol
A groan escapes his lips. Jongseong kind of regrets it now, messaging at one in the morning. The guy is probably asleep already. He continues to stare at his ceiling, then. Cursing himself in his mind. His mental breakdown is cut off when he feels his phone vibrate from where it was resting on his stomach. He quickly opened it and could not help the smile curling on his lips.
sunny 🌻
hyung ! why are u still awake >:(
it’s like 2,, are u ok though ? do u need something?
Jongseong chuckles. Why is Sunoo so cute? Jongseong has no idea how someone could be this adorable. As if Kim Sunoo is the personification of the word ‘adorable’.
Jongseong
dw i’m fine
i wasnt expecting u to reply though
why are u still up?
sunny 🌻
i just finished an assignment :D
but why are you asking me !!
i asked u first !! >:(
Jongseong

sunny 🌻

if u dont mind me asking !
Jongseong smiles. Such a considerate person. How is Kim Sunoo so kind?
Jongseong
it’s fine.
well…
i was thinking about you actually
He pauses. Was that too forward? Sunoo would probably be weirded out. Park Jongseong, you're an idiot . He mentally scolds himself.
sunny 🌻
me OoO !!
what have i done to hyung ㅠㅠ
Jongseong inhales. He turns to his side and bites his lips to prevent himself from screaming and accidentally waking everyone in the whole apartment building. Heeseung would probably barge in holding the fire extinguisher.
Kim Sunoo what an adorable human you are.
Jongseong
hahahaha u didnt do anything wrong
ur so dramatic lol
sunny 🌻
hey ! >:(

Jongseong

Jongseong licks his lips. It’s now or never.
Jongseong
i could go with you
Shit. He already pressed send. He cannot take it back anymore.
Jongseong
if you want!
that is. lol
He watches the three grey dots on his screen. Jongseong does not know how many minutes have passed (it was only twenty seconds) as he nervously stares at his screen. Sunoo really did take his time to reply, adding more nerves to Jongseong.
sunny 🌻
oh nooo hyung! it’s okay! you don’t have to come with me!!!
it’s not a big deal. like i said, i could always come next year with jungwonnie.
besides, i know ur busy! and its a saturday! your rest day.
i cant just pull u out of ur free day!!
dont worry hyung :))) it’s fine! ^^
Jongseong laughs. Really laughs because Sunoo is so kind and understanding, so thoughtful and nice. Has he mentioned that Sunoo is kind? He probably has, but he’s gonna say it again. Sunoo is kind. And Jongseong has not met a kinder person than Sunoo.
Jongseong
sun, it’s fine.

i wont suggest it if i dont want to come
sunny 🌻

Jongseong
no need to thank me, sun.
Jongseong would probably give him all the stars if he wanted to.
✿✿✿
Saturday.
Saturday comes like a flash. Like a blink. Jongseong feels nervous, he does not even know why. Why is he feeling nervous? It’s just Sunoo. Well, that’s kinda why… Because it is Sunoo.
Heeseung looks at him, snorting at the sight of Jongseong pacing back and forth. He mentally laughs, knowing why his friend is acting like this.
“Hey, relax. Why are you nervous?” Heeseung calls. Jongseong stops, facing the elder. “I don’t know.” He groans.
Jongseong strides towards the sofa and sits beside Heeseung. He fiddles his hands, fingers playing with his rings. Heeseung lets out a small laugh. “Relax, Seong-ah. It’s just Sunoo. My brother whom you have known since high school.” He says, “It’s not like you’re going on a date.”
Heeseung feels him pause. Bullseye. Heeseung mentally smirks.
“W-what are you saying…” Jongseong mumbles, voice trailing at the end. Heeseung snickers, finding the situation funny. Seeing his friend having a mental breakdown over his brother makes him giddy.
“What? Is it a date, then?” Heeseung asks, a little challenging. Jongseong’s face heats up, his ears turning a bright shade of pink. Heeseung feels joy at this. “It’s not a date, Seung. I just want to accompany him.” He says. Sure…
Heeseung hums, “I thought you wanted to rest today? You told me you’d sleep the whole day.” He says, teasing. Jongseong groans, “That was a week ago. I’m a changed man.” He tuts.
“Changed man, my ass.” Heeseung snickers. “You are too soft, Park Jay.” He teases.
Jongseong rolls his eyes. “Shut up.” Although that’s true. He really is soft for a guy named Sunoo.
“In all seriousness,” Heeseung suddenly says, “Just relax and enjoy, Jay-ah. You also deserve to have fun. You’ve been working your ass off with your studies and in your dad’s company for the past two months.” He adds. “Just be careful. Festivals like that are full of people, so be careful not to lose each other.”
Jongseong nods his head, “Yeah. Thanks Seung. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of him.” He promises.
Heeseung smirks, “Ah. I’m not worried, I know you will. Even when no one tells you to.”
He is right. Jongseong does not need to be told to take care of Sunoo because he has been doing that for as long as he can remember. And he will gladly do it again, over and over.
“Bye Heeseung, I’ll see you later.” Jongseong says as he walks towards the door. He hears Heeseung answer from the bathroom. Yelling at him to take care and be careful. He leaves the apartment, car keys in his hand. The nerves from before slowly come back, but Jongseong tries his best to ignore them.
He drives towards the university dorms, one elbow resting on the window as the other steers the wheel. He has not seen Sunoo for the past few days, only texting the younger one. They were both busy, as midterms are slowly approaching. It has been three days (not that he’s counting, no) since he last saw Sunoo. Jongseong feels excited seeing the younger male again.
When he arrives in front of the building, he quickly sends a text to Sunoo. He gets a reply after a few seconds, saying that he’ll come out soon.
Jongseong waits, hands resting on his lap as he stares at the road in front of him.
Sunoo arrives after two minutes (nope, he’s not counting). Jongseong feels something punch the air out of his lungs as soon as his eyes land on Sunoo.
The last time he saw Sunoo, the younger male was still blonde. After three days, Jongseong sees him with soft, purple hair framing his equally soft, pretty face. Sunoo is not blonde anymore. He has purple hair. Jongseong thinks he could cry.
“Hi,” Sunoo greets as he settles in the passenger’s seat. Jongseong is still staring at him, mouth slightly agape. Sunoo notices the lack of response so he turns to look at the older male. He laughs at the Jongseong’s surprised face.
“Does it look okay?” Sunoo asks, shyly reaching up to play a portion of his newly dyed hair.
This manages to break Jongseong out of his trance. He blinks twice before clearing his throat. “You look… Amazing. Your hair is pretty.” He mumbles. He feels his cheeks warm up at that. Sunoo giggles, giving him a shy smile. “Thank you, hyung.” He softly says.
Jongseong grips the steering wheel tighter. He can’t take this. His heart is going to burst.
He takes a deep breath first before driving off.
Kim Sunoo looks absolutely breathtaking, Jongseong whines in his head. He’s too much of a coward to say that out loud though. He could describe Sunoo every positive adjective he knows, but nothing will top the words ‘gorgeous’ and ‘ethereal’. Kim Sunoo is out of this world. Jongseong is convinced that he is not human.
The drive to the place was quiet, but comfortable. The soft noise coming from the radio playing songs was the only thing they could hear inside the car. Sunoo would occasionally hum with the songs played.
The place where the music festival is held was full of people. There are food kiosks, a lot of people busking, people selling merchs and a whole lot more. When they walk inside the area, Sunoo’s eyes light up at the sight. His smile is so wide and bright. Jongseong could feel himself smile too, seeing Sunoo this happy makes him happy too. There is an hour and a half left before the show starts so they have plenty of time to roam around and check the place. They walk together side by side, and Jongseong fights the urge to grab Sunoo’s hand in his.
He almost caved in though, but he managed to stop himself.
Sunoo checks each stall, with Jongseong trailing after him. Sunoo looks like an excited child on his first field trip.
They buy food first, trying on the snacks in one of the stalls. Jongseong thinks that it is a good idea to eat first before the show starts to prevent them from feeling hungry later. Sunoo eats his corndog happily, occasionally speaking after each bite. Jongseong as per usual, listens to him. He answers the younger male’s questions, nods his head to let him know that he is listening.
Never in his life that he did not listen to Sunoo’s random ramblings. Jongseong admits that he cannot remember some of them anymore, but he always listens.
The show will start in a few minutes. Although arriving earlier before the show begins, there are still a lot of people. So when they went to find a good spot, they failed. There are already hundreds of people in front of them, and scared that they will get trampled on and pushed if they force inside the crowd, they both decided to stay at the back. Besides, they are here to enjoy the music anyway.
When the show starts, Sunoo squeals in excitement. He jumps up at the first song. Jongseong smiles at him, arms crossed over his chest as he listens to the live music. He watches Sunoo, instead. Sunoo looks absolutely beautiful under the lights surrounding them. He watches the younger male bop to the music. Honestly, Jongseong could not really focus anymore, all he could see is Sunoo’s bright smile and all he could hear is Sunoo’s voice, singing along to the songs.
Jongseong then realizes something. And he is royally fucked.
Why is he realizing this right now? He should not have a mental breakdown in the middle of a music festival. Mental breakdowns are for their apartment unit only. Jongseong inhales, taking a deep breath to calm himself.
Jongseong realizes something.
He realizes that he does not want Sunoo as his little brother.
Because you do not have these kinds of feelings for a younger brother.
Jongseong is sure that he likes Kim Sunoo way more than just a friend.
Sunoo turns to look at the elder, smile still so big and pretty. His eyes are formed into crescents too, something that Jongseong loves to see.
“Are you having fun, hyung?” He asks.
Jongseong smiles at that, “Yeah. Don’t worry about me. Just enjoy yourself.” He says.
Sunoo nods and goes back to focusing in front. That leaves Jongseong having a mental breakdown. Again.
He focuses on calming down. He goes back to watching Sunoo. He then notices how the younger would stand on his toes to peek in front. This must be his favourite band, then. Jongseong ponders for a bit. And then he’s crouching down, which shocked Sunoo in the process.
“Hyung?! What are you doing?” He asks, immediately trying to pull Jongseong up. But to no avail, the elder is quite stronger than him.
“Quick, climb on my shoulders.” Jongseong says.
“What?!” Sunoo sputters. Jongseong taps his shoulders again, “Quickly, before your favourite band finishes.”
Sunoo, although still surprised, quickly climbs up Jongseong’s shoulders. Once the elder is sure that Sunoo is secured, he carefully stands up, groaning at the sudden weight. “Whoa!” Sunoo exclaims, holding both of Jongseong’s hands.
“Hyung, are you sure it’s okay?” Sunoo asks.
“Don’t worry about me, Sun. Just enjoy.” Jongseong replies, squeezing the other male’s hands.
Sunoo looks down for a few seconds, unsure and feeling bad about having to sit on his hyung’s shoulder. But as soon as he hears the familiar tune of one of his favourite songs, Sunoo momentarily forgets his worries. Instead, he goes back to enjoying the festival. Jongseong feels relieved, Sunoo finally acerting his attention back to the show.
Jongseong feels happy. Despite having a mini monologue in his head earlier upon realizing his feelings, the fact that he’s with Sunoo at this moment is enough to make him feel happy and content. Just hearing Sunoo’s happy laughter as he sees his favourite band, Jongseong feels fulfillment.
When the band Sunoo likes has finished performing, he taps Jongseong’s head a little. Jongseong carefully crouches back down to let Sunoo hop down from him. The younger male immediately frets over him as soon as he stands up.
“Are you okay, hyung? Am I heavy? Are you hurt?” He asks, gently grabbing Jongseong’s arm while looking up at him.
Jongseong chuckles, “I’m fine. You’re not that heavy.” He teases. Sunoo pouts, “If your shoulders start to hurt, please tell me.” He mumbles. Jongseong smiles. So thoughtful.
“Sure. Focus on the show, Sun. It’s not done yet.” Jongseong states. Sunoo nods his head and goes back to vibing with the music.
The hand on his arm does not leave so Jongseong does not comment on that. He likes how warm Sunoo feels like beside him under the chilly night.
And when their hands find their way to each other as time passes by, neither of them has commented on that. Jongseong feels his heart bursting. His palm is heavy against Sunoo’s soft one.
The show finishes at ten in the evening. Jongseong drives them to a nearby Mcdonalds place, eating their late dinner, talking to each other with shy smiles and lingering gazes. Jongseong drives them back to the university dorms, with Sunoo almost falling asleep next to him. Sunoo pulls the seatbelt away from him once they have arrived and then he looks at Jongseong who is already looking at him with a soft smile.
“Thank you for today, hyung.” Sunoo says.
Jongseong nods, “I hope you enjoyed it, Sun.”
“I did. So much. Thank you.” He grins.
There is a comfortable silence after that. Jongseong is still staring at Sunoo, eyes roaming around the younger male’s face. His trance is broken when he sees Sunoo leaning towards him. He feels something soft and warm touch his cheek.
“Thank you again, hyung.” Sunoo softly murmurs against his ear before opening the car door and waving at the stunned male. “Bye hyung. Be careful driving back. Text me once you get home!” Sunoo beams before closing the door.
Jongseong watches Sunoo retreating back from the window. Still too stunned to do anything.
He calms down after two minutes. His eyes blink slowly, then his brain starts functioning again.
Jongseong looks in front. At the dark road ahead of him.
Kim Sunoo just kissed his cheek.
Fuck. He should not be this happy for receiving a cheek kiss from someone. Heck , he is not in elementary school anymore. But why does it feel like he has been kissed on the cheek by his grade school crush? Like he’s back being a kid, excited over a cheek kiss. Something he wants to brag to his friends and his parents.
But it was Kim Sunoo who kissed him. After he realizes his feelings for the boy, the said boy gives him a kiss on the cheek. All on the same day. Jongseong thinks he’s going to pass out.
He did not, though. Thankfully. He manages to collect himself after a few seconds before driving away. There is a big smile on his face, heart still hammering in his chest. Kim Sunoo… He’s probably going to be the death of him if he continues that.

“Don’t be antsy, man.”
Jongseong glares at Sunghoon, who is trying his best to prevent his laugh from coming out. His friend smirks though, giving him a teasing look before getting back to talking with Jaeyun.
Jungwon is looking at him as he sips on his iced coffee. Jongseong raises an eyebrow but the younger male only shakes his head and turns around to look at Riki who is, as usual, playing with his phone. Sunoo is still nowhere to be found, the younger male texting them earlier that he will be late for a few minutes because his professor requested an overtime.
So that leaves them here, at this moment. They are currently waiting for Sunoo at a table under the shade of a huge tree. Jongseong is watching the students walking past them, occasionally joining Sunghoon and Jaeyun’s conversation if it piques his interest. Heeseung is currently taking a nap beside him.
He is the first to notice the familiar cream coloured cardigan. He squints his eyes and adjusts his spectacles. Jungwon beats him to notify their friends though, “Oh, Sunnie is here.” He says. Their attention then falls to the figure walking towards them.
“Sun’s not alone, though.” Jaeyun comments. Jongseong rolls his eyes.
When Sunoo arrives, he is a little out of breath, his hair is a little messy, strands sticking out in all directions. Jongseong thinks that he still looks beautiful. He is smiling when he stops in front of them, eyes crinkling to crescents again, cheeks high and shaded pink. “Hi!” He greets.
The guy following him stops right behind him, taller than Sunoo, and smiles at them too. Jongseong notices the stack of canvases in his arms. Sunoo looks up at the male, “This is one of my classmates, Euijoo.” He says, “And these are my friends.” He beams. “My brother is the one sleeping.” He adds.
The guy, Euijoo , bows his head immediately after that. “Nice to meet all of you, I’m Byun Euijoo. I’m classmates with Sunoo in five of his subjects.” He introduces himself. Everyone follows suit, Jongseong too, even though his gaze doesn’t leave the hand lingering on Sunoo’s shoulder.
Jongseong’s left eye twitches. Why is he even holding Sunoo like that?
“Anyway, he just helped me because I had too many canvases and brushes that I can’t carry.” Sunoo explains, “Thank you for the help, Euijoo-ya.” He tells the other. Euijoo gives him a smile, rather sweet, making Jongseong scoff mentally. He looks dumb, he thinks.
Sunoo’s classmate leaves after a few seconds, after carefully placing Sunoo’s things on the table and after he says something to Sunoo in a whisper. This successfully woke Heeseung up. The eldest greets his brother, eyes red and voice laced with sleep. Sunoo laughs at his brother, pointing at the creases on his face for lying on his bag. Jongseong could only stare at the younger male’s bright face.
He cannot explain this, but Jongseong thinks that every time he sees Sunoo, the boy just keeps on looking more beautiful. Under the golden light of the sunray touching Sunoo’s light coloured hair, the soft light touching the peak of his cheeks, Jongseong feels a little winded. His throat forms a lump there, making it difficult to swallow.
Jongseong lets out a soft breath as he looks away from the younger male for a while. When he looks up, his eyes meet Jungwon’s wide ones. There is a knowing glint under his gaze that Jongseong can fully decipher the meaning. He knows, okay. Jonngseong is just a coward.
Jongseong volunteers to hold Sunoo’s things for him. The younger male argues with him for a few minutes, though. Although he gives up after a few minutes, seeing as their friends already left them. Jongseong sends a glare at Sunghoon who only smirks at him.
They walk side by side, with Sunoo humming beside him.
“Hyung?”
“Hm?” Jongseong hums, waiting for the younger male to continue.
Sunoo hesitates, “Are you busy tomorrow?” He asks, voice small and soft, that Jongseong has this immediate urge to keep him in his pocket.
“Hm,” He thinks. “I’m not. Why?” He asks.
The younger male hesitates again, “I am wondering if you want to go with me to an art museum? Tomorrow?” He finally asks, looking up at Jongseong with those wide eyes. The elder raises an eyebrow at him before chuckling a little, “Sure. You know I’d do anything for you.” He smiles.
Sunoo blushes, actually blushes. Jongseong could see the younger male’s ears turning red. So he looks away from Sunoo, not wanting to embarrass the younger male. “Hyung… You can say no if you’re busy.” He murmurs.
“And I told you that I’m not.” Jongseong chides softly. “It’s fine, Sun. Why do you want to go to an art museum all of a sudden?” He asks.
“Oh, it’s…” Sunoo trails off, “It’s for one of our subjects?” He states, or was it a question? Jongseong does not say anything. “Yeah, it’s for one of our subjects… Apparently, we need to look for inspiration and our professor suggested we visit an art museum or anything related to art.” He explains. Jongseong hums, nodding his head.
“Alright. What time?”
Sunoo fiddles with the sleeves of his cardigan, “Around seven? The museum I had in mind is open until ten in the evening.” He says.
“Okay. I’ll pick you up then.”
The younger male flusters, “Hyung! No need. I can go there by myself.” Sunoo says, waving his hands vigorously. Jongseong snorts, “It’s fine. We live one block away.” He explains. Sunoo could only purse his lip into a thin line, obviously giving up.
One point for Jongseong again.
✿✿✿
“I heard from Sunoo you’re going on a date tomorrow?” Heeseung suddenly asks as he grabs a plate from their cupboard. Jongseong almost drops the pan he is holding, the pan where their dinner (galbi-jjim) was cooked.
Heeseung yelps, arms reaching out to catch the pan (scolding hot pan fresh from the stove). Thankfully, Jongseong does not drop their dinner on the floor so Heeseung lets out the breath he was holding. He stands up straight and pulls out a chair to sit. Jongseong follows, carefully placing the pan on the table.
When they are both seated, they start eating. After one bite, Jongseong looks up and points at Heeseung with his chopsticks. “Did Sunoo call it a…” He pauses, “A date ?” He asks. Because he doubts. Sunoo is like the most dense person he has ever met.
Heeseung snorts, “No. I just called it a date because it is for you. And it is fun seeing you get flustered.” He grins. Jongseong wants to throw a meat on his face but he remembers that you should not play with food, so he sends the elder a blank daze instead.
“Anyway, why don’t you grab this chance?” Heeseung asks, picking up a piece of kimchi and eating it. Jongseong raises an eyebrow, “Chance for what?” He asks back. What is Heeseung talking about?
“Chance? Chance to ask him on a real date, ask him to be your boyfriend or something.” He says, a little nonchalant as if it’s the most normal thing in the world.
Jongseong chokes then, inhaling the piece of bell pepper he chose to swallow at the same time Heeseung speaks. “WHAT.” He exclaims after drinking water and coughing four times. Heeseung raises an eyebrow as he continues to eat his rice as if his best friend wasn’t choking in front of him literally ten seconds ago.
“What?” The older male asks back, eating another piece of kimchi . “You’re not subtle, Jongseong-ah. And I am certainly not blind.” He casually states, “Everyone knows how pitiful you are pining over Sunoo.” He adds.
The other male could only stare at the other. Heeseung asks something, probably about eating the last piece of meat on the pan, but his mind is not functioning anymore. He continues to stare at Heeseung’s face as he malfunctions. The older male could not help the snort he lets out, reaching up to wave a hand on Jongseong’s face. “You okay, Jengseng?” He asks.
“What do you mean about that…” Jongseong manages to speak after two minutes.
Heeseung tilts his head, “What? About knowing your harboring feelings for my brother? Or the part that everyone knows?” He asks.
Jongseong winces, “Both..?” He says, a little weak. He cannot fucking move.
“Well, I’ve actually known since high school.” He admits.
“High school?” Jongseong asks, confused. “But I’m sure I just learned that I liked Sunoo a few months ago.” He mumbles.
Heeseung laughs and then he shakes his head, “Oh, Park Jongseong, my best friend since middle school, heir to Park Industries…” He trails off, giving Jongseong a look of mock pity. “My friend, you have liked my brother since high school. I have eyes, you know? Everyone in our friend group has eyes. They knew, we knew even before you knew.” He continues.
“What.” Is what Jongseong says.
“Yeah… You probably didn’t notice, but you’ve always liked him since then. You’ve always trailed after him like a lost puppy, always making sure he’s well. I once questioned if you were his brother or me. But I realized later on that it was because you like him.” Heeseung says, sighing a little. “Don’t worry though. My baby brother is probably the most oblivious person walking on this planet. I don’t know if it’s because of his zodiac sign, or it’s just him as a person. So you don’t have to worry about Sunoo knowing your feelings for him. You’re good, dude.” Heeseung once again says this in so much nonchalance. How does he do that?
Jongseong exhales, “Are you… Okay with it? Me liking your brother?” He asks, a little hesitant. Because even though they’ve been friends for almost a decade, Heeseung is still Sunoo’s elder brother.
Heeseung snorted, “Dude, if I was against you liking my brother, I would have done that when we were teenagers. And please, what do you take me for? We’re not in a drama, Jongseong. I won’t be opposed to whoever my Sunoo likes or whoever may like him. I’m sure our parents would not be mad. My mother would probably be ecstatic knowing it was you. She’d probably do her best to make sure Sunoo ends up with you.” Heeseung laughs. “Our father though… No comment. Sunoo’s his baby.” He adds.
Jongseong pales, “Not helping.” He grumbles. Understandable though. Sunoo is a baby.
“Just kidding. Not the Sunoo is our father’s baby part though, so I don’t really know how he would react.” Heeseung mumbles, “Anyway, before our parents' reactions, you need to confess to him first. Parents’ reaction comes after successfully being Sunoo’s lover.”
Jongseong flusters at Heeseung’s choice of words. Lover. It’s a big word as well as something Jongseong would want to be called.
“Okay… You’re right. It’s time to stop being a coward and confess.” Jongseong nods his head and then he pauses again. “But what if I get rejected?” He whispers, suddenly feeling scared again.
Heeseung rolls his eyes, “Please, I doubt that. Even when Sunoo rejects you, he’s not heartless. I have known my brother since he was in diapers. He won’t just throw away your almost half a decade friendship just because you caught feelings for him.” He explains. He’s right. Sunoo is not an ass, definitely not heartless.
“You’re right. Sun is not heartless, he’s probably the kindest person I know. An angel on earth. Wingless angel Kim Sunoo.” Jongseong sighs dramatically. A smile forms on his lips as he thinks of the boy with pretty eyes, long lashes and soft heart.
Heeseung stares at his friend with a grimace, “Oh god, I regret telling you that I’m alright with you liking Sunoo. I cannot bear seeing your heart eyes and hearing you gush about my brother whom I have seen butt naked several times.” He groans.
Jongseong only gives him a smile, “Well too bad, future brother-in-law. Because you will hear me sing praises to your brother everyday. ” He grins and Heesueng thinks he kind of looks like the Cheshire cat.
“My darling, please bring my brother home before bed time.” Heeseung dramatically coos, reaching up to touch Jongseong’s cheeks in his palms. The latter grimaces, lightly shoving the elder away from him before bending down to put his shoes on.
“Seung, please stop.” He groans.
Heeseung laughs, stepping away slightly. “Kidding aside, enjoy Jongseong-ah.” He smiles, genuine. The younger male feels lighter, seeing Heeseung look at him softly like that.
“We will, Seung. Don’t worry.” He nods. “I’ll take care of him.”
“I know.” He grins, “I know you’re planning on giving him flowers.” He adds. Jongseong laughs at that, reaching up to scratch his nape. “Too obvious?” He asks, sheepish.
Heeseung smirks, “Not really, but you’re cliche.” He snickers when Jongseong rolls his eyes. “Get him three pieces of sunflowers instead of a whole bouquet of roses.” He helpfully adds. Jongseong already knows that, he wants to say. He had given Sunoo sunflowers back then, during his high school graduation. But he does not say anything to Heeseung. So he nods his head and thanks him.
“I’ll get going now.” Jongseong says, earning a nod from Heeseung who’s still standing at the doorway with his arms crossed over his chest. “Be careful driving Seong-ah. And enjoy.” He smiles.
When the door to their apartment unit closes, Jongseong releases a deep sigh. His palms get clammy in each passing second. After he sits in his car, he opens his phone to search for a nearby flower shop that is still open during evenings. When he sees one, he drives to the direction of the shop. It is three blocks away.
“Good evening! Welcome to In Bloom!” A guy beams at him as soon as he enters the shop. The flower shop is beautiful, with all the flowers and different plants surrounding the whole area. Jongseong looks at the guy, and then he smiles. “Hi…” He trails off as he squints at the name tag. “... Taehyung-ssi.” He finishes.
They walk towards the reception desk, Taehyung grabbing a book from the counter and giving it to Jongseong. “These are all the flowers we have as of now, you can choose from any of those and we will decide if you’d want them to have an arrangement or just a simple bouquet.” He smiles.
Jongseong gives him a small smile, “I actually want some sunflowers? Is it available?” He asks.
Taehyung perks up at that, “Oh, of course! How many pieces do you want?” He asks, already moving to go over to the next room. “Three, please.”
“Alright…”
“Jongseong.”
“Alright Jongseong-ssi, I will get you some sunflowers so you can choose from them.” He gives Jongseong another wide smile before disappearing into the room. This gives Jongseong time to admire the whole interior of the shop. It is simple, no vibrant colours, just enough shade of pastel that is pleasing to the eyes.
Sunoo would probably love it here, he thinks. The younger male loves flowers.
Taehyung comes back with arms full of sunflowers. Another guy follows him, and Jongseong feels a little intimidated. The guy has arms full of tattoos and ears full of piercings and even an eyebrow piercing. Jongseong thinks he looks cool and a little absurd holding sunflowers.
“Jongseong-ssi! Here are the fresh batch of sunflowers we got earlier today. You can choose from them.” Taehyung smiles at him and he puts the sunflowers on an empty vase sitting next to the other flowers. The guy behind him does the same.
“Thank you, Taehyung-ssi.” He smiles, bowing his head a little. He looks over the flowers. Jongseong feels a little overwhelmed right now, seeing the array of sunflowers in front of him. It just reminds him that he will try his best to confess to Sunoo.
Taehyung notices him fidgeting, “Are you okay, Jongseong-ssi?” He asks softly. Jongseong looks at him and the guy behind him, who is now smiling. They are both too handsome, Jongseong does not need to gay panic right now.
“I’m okay… Just nervous is all.” He admits, letting out a small laugh.
“First date?” The guy behind Taehyung asks. “I’m Jeongguk by the way.” He smiles.
Jongseong licks his lips, “I wish… He just asked me to accompany him to visit an art museum for his assignment.” He says.
“Ohh, but you like him.” Taehyung grins.
Jongseong feels his cheeks warm at Taehyung’s words. “Yeah… Since high school. Though I just realized a few months ago.” He chuckles.
Taehyung beams, “Oh just like my dear Jeonggukkie!” He laughs. “We have known each other since middle school. We got together in college because he couldn’t admit that he likes me.”
Jeongguk groans, shaking his head. “How many times have you told that to our customers, baby? I told you one day you will scare them away.” He says, but despite the tone, Jongseong sees the fondness in his eyes as Taehyung continues to tease him.
Jongseong’s heart flips at the sudden display of affection in front of him. And to learn that these two kind people are partners. Boyfriends, lovers? He does not know but to see them in love makes his heart warm.
“I apologize on behalf of my darling boyfriend, Jongseong-ssi.” Jeongguk says, holding Taehyung by the shoulder. “Have you chosen your flowers?” He asks.
Jongseong nods his head and picks the flowers and gives them to Taehyung. “Do you want an arrangement with other flowers or just these three?” The elder asks. “Just the sunflowers is enough. He likes everything simple.” He mumbles with a shy smile.
Taehyung giggles, “Okay. I’ll arrange these first. Gukkie please accompany Jongseong-ssi for a while.” He says before leaving the two of them. Jeongguk watches his boyfriend leave before looking back at Jongseong with a small smile.
“Do you want to talk? To ease the nerves. I remember talking to my hyungs before I asked Taehyung on a date.” He says.
“Were you scared too?” Jongseong asks.
Jeongguk snorts, “Of course I was. It’s a normal feeling, feeling scared I mean. Even though we have known each other since we’re teenagers, I still felt scared.” He smiles, rather nostalgic. As if he’s recalling. Maybe he is, Jongseong thinks. “But you know what I’ve told myself that time? It’s to take the risk. ‘Cause it’s better to say that you’ve tried than not try at all.” Jeongguk says, reaching out to grab one lily from a foam. “Imagine, if I didn’t do anything. If I didn’t tell him my feelings, we may not have ended up together at all.” He smiles at the younger male. “Ask yourself, Jongseong-ah. I’ll speak informally now since we’ve been talking about feelings for the past few minutes.” He laughs.
“Ask yourself Jongseong-ah, if he’s worth taking the risk.”
Jongseong does not even think before answering, “He’s worth the risk.” He says in a heartbeat.
Jeongguk gives him a proud smile, reaching up to pat his shoulder. “Then that’s your answer. It’s okay to get scared. But be courageous enough for yourself and for him.” He says.
Taehyung comes back after that, holding the sunflowers wrapped in soft purple paper. He smiles at them. “Hi, I’m done with your flowers.” He greets.
They move over the counter, Jeongguk telling Jongseong the price and the latter paying them. Taehyung was about to give him a discount but Jongseong refused, shaking his head quickly. The elder pouts at him then, telling him that the next time he comes back, they will give him a discount. Jongseong agrees then.
“Thank you so much.” Jongseong says, bowing at the couple.
“You are very much welcome, Jongseong-ah.” Taehyung says, smiling at him. After hearing Jeongguk call the younger male informally, Taehyung sparks another argument with his boyfriend about calling their customers by their name that way. Jongseong insists that it was fine and that Taehyung could address him informally too, which the elder accepts immediately, looking pleased.
“Good luck, I hope it ends well.” Jeongguk tells him with a small smile. Jongseong nods, feeling grateful. He’s glad he met these two people before Sunoo. He feels a little better and feels his heart calming down after the talk with Jeongguk.
“I will definitely come back. Hoping to bring him here next time.” Jongseong says, bowing at them and thanking them once again for their help. He waves them goodbye before leaving the shop.
He takes a deep breath. He hopes to bring Sunoo here soon.
Jongseong
i’m here sun
sunny 🌻
ok! be right there in a few!
:D
Jongseong stands before the entrance to Sunoo’s dorm building. There were a total of three students who had passed by him looking at him. He heard them talking about how sweet he is, holding flowers probably waiting for his partner. Well he hopes that the word ‘partner’ will soon come true.
The door opens and Jongseong sees an angel. He cannot count the times Kim Sunoo has taken his breath away, literally. Sunoo is skipping towards him with a bright smile, and even under the darkness of the chilly night, Sunoo is glowing. Oh, Jongseong cannot help himself but praise the younger male.
“Hi, hyung.” Sunoo greets, blonde hair looking like a halo on top of his head.
“Hi.” Jongseong greets back. And before he forgets, he hands the flowers to the younger male who lets out a small “oh!” in surprise. Adorable.
“Sunflowers!” Sunoo exclaims, grabbing ahold of the flowers. Jongseong smiles, he feels happy seeing the younger male. Sunoo looks up at him with wide eyes, “Thank you for these hyung.” He smiles, and Jongseong is glad that he did not ask why he gave him flowers. Sunoo probably knows that Jongseong would feel embarrassed if he were to ask that.
Once they are seated inside Jongseong’s (fancy) car, Sunoo tells him the name of the museum so they can track the direction using GPS. It is located in the next city, about thirty minutes from their current location.
The drive was peaceful, with Sunoo talking about his day. Jongseong silently listens, as he always does whenever the younger male is rambling.
After they arrive, Sunoo drags him towards the entrance. His palm is warm, holding Jongseong’s wrist. Sunoo gives two tickets to the receptionist, pointing to himself and the taller male. They thank the kind lady and proceed to walk inside the building.
Jongseong is not really that into art. Sure, he appreciates the beauty of art around him, but he is not as passionate as Sunoo. The younger male knows everything (not really but he’s exaggerating) about art. As they walk, Sunoo speaks to him about the art displayed every time they stop. He explains the origin, talks about the artist, he says how amazing the art style is, or how lovely each colour is. Jongseong listens, genuinely curious. He loves learning new things and he absolutely loves hearing Sunoo talk with so much passion about something he loves.
There are only a few people inside the building, some of them are couples, some are alone. Jongseong likes to think that the two of them fall into the ‘couples’ category.
“Everything is only a replica of the original ones, the original ones are either in France or the United States.” Sunoo says as they reach the last room. Jongseong hums, placing his hands inside his coat’s pockets. Sunoo is also wearing a coat, Jongseong remembers this as a gift from Jaeyun for the younger male’s birthday last year. It reaches down to his calves, making Sunoo look a little shorter than usual. He’s also wearing a brown beret, hair pushed back accenting his strong eyebrows and pointed eyes.
“This is one of my favourite paintings,” Sunoo says, smiling as he points at the art display before them.
‘ Le Printemps (Springtime)’ By Pierre-Auguste Cot.
It is beautiful. Even though Jongseong does not know much about art, he knows that the painting was an oil painting. There are two people in the painting, a man and a woman sitting on a swing tied on a huge tree branch.
“Why do you love this painting?” He hears himself ask the younger male.
Sunoo gives him a bright smile at that, almost blinding him. He just looks so beautiful.
“This painting… Is about love.” He starts, “New love, to be specific. Well that is how I interpret this painting though. Art becomes however the viewer sees it.” He chuckles a little before continuing, “During spring, new flowers bloom, the waters come back, and butterflies flutter around to celebrate the end of winter and the coming back of colours. That is how I see them in this painting, just two young people newly in love in spring. Newly bloomed feelings like the flower buds in spring. Butterflies flutter in their stomach as they lovingly gaze at each other,” He trails off, looking back at Jongseong who is already looking at him with a small fond smile. “Gaze at each other as if they’re the only people in the world, in the tiny bubble they created surrounded by their love for each other…” He mumbles, still looking at the elder.
Jongseong gets lost in the younger one’s eyes. He thinks back at Jeongguk’s words from the flower shop before. Kim Sunoo is worth taking the risk.
“Love--”
“I like you.”
Sunoo’s eyes widened.
Jongseong takes a deep breath before shifting to turn to properly face the younger male. He reaches up and brushes the loose hair touching Sunoo’s eye. He smiles at the other, “I like you Kim Sunoo.” he says again, voice confident.
Sunoo continues to stare at him with wide eyes and parted lips, cheeks beginning to redden, the younger male looking like a fresh peach.
Jongseong laughs softly, “I just want you to know, Sun. you don’t have to answer me.” He smiles, placing his palm on Sunoo’s soft cheek, thumb tenderly caressing the mole on the other male’s cheek. “Sun, you’re so pretty. So beautiful, more than every art we saw today--no offense to the artists though.” He chuckles, “You’re the most beautiful art, Sun.”
Sunoo suddenly whines, moving to hide himself in Jongseong’s chest. The action makes the elder laugh again in amusement, finding Sunoo’s embarrassment adorable. God, he is so whipped.
“Hyuuuung…!” Sunoo whines again, “You can’t just say those things to me in public!” He says, voice muffled in Jongseong’s chest. The latter laughs again, placing both hands on Sunoo’s arms to gently push him away. Sunoo just whines again, moving to bury himself further in the elder’s body.
Jongseong is about to combust.
“Why?” He laughs, “You’re so cute, Sunoo-ya. I want to pinch your cheeks.”
He feels Sunoo shake his head from his position on his chest. “Hyuuung… You’re so mean.” He says.
Jongseong smiles, letting Sunoo stay in his chest like that for as long as he wants to. His hands are still holding the younger male’s arms. And after a few minutes, he feels Sunoo move slowly away from him, just enough to look up at the elder. Sunoo has pink cheeks, ears in the same shade too. His eyes are squinted and his pinkish lips are pouted. Jongseong wonders what tint he is using.
“Hyung.” He calls. The elder hums, appreciating the close proximity to check Sunoo’s face. From the shape of his eyebrows to his long eyelashes that touch his pink cheeks every time he blinks, the slope of his nose, the mole under his eye and on his cheek, and his soft, pink lips. Jongseong spends the most staring at Sunoo’s lips.
“Hyung, I like you too.” He hears Sunoo say.
His eyes immediately snap to look at Sunoo’s now smiling eyes. Jongseong’s eyes widened, “What? What did you say?” He murmurs.
Sunoo giggles, sounding like an angel to the older male’s ears. The former moves to stand on his tip toes, reaching up to gently pull Jongseong towards him. He leans towards the other’s ear and softly whispers, “Park Jongseong, I like you too.”
Jongseong pulls back, eyes wider than before. “Seriously?” He asks, a little dumbly. Sunoo laughs again, reaching to place both of his palms on the elder’s cheeks. “Seriously.” He confirms.
A disbelieving laugh bubbles out of Jongseong’s chest as he pulls Sunoo to his arms. He buries his face on the crook of Sunoo’s neck, inhaling the faint scent of citrus. He feels arms wrap around him and a pair of hands resting on his back.
They stay like that for a while, not minding the few people turning to look at them like they have three heads. Jongseong does not care, he feels too happy to care about anything other than the boy in his arms right now. Sunoo starts caressing his back, bringing a feeling of strange comfort within Jongseong. The elder inhales deeply again, tightening his hold on the younger male.
“Hyung.” Sunoo laughs in his ear, “Hyung, I think we should go.” He says.
Jongseong is the one who whines this time, making Sunoo laugh a little louder. “We can always hug any time, hyung. It’s just, we’re in public right now and it’s getting late.” Sunoo says softly. The older male reluctantly releases him, a pout on his face.
“You’re so cute, hyung.” Sunoo giggles. He slides his hand to grab Jongseong’s right hand and intertwines their fingers. Sunoo gives him a shy smile so Jongseong squeezes his hand gently.
With wide grins, they walk out of the museum while holding each other’s hands. They stop in front of Jongseong’s car and turn to face each other. Sunoo smiles at him, looking so beautiful under the moonlight.
“I have something I want to confess, hyung.” Sunoo says. Jongseong hums. “I didn’t really need to go to this art museum for my subject,” The young male says, a little sheepish. A smile forms on Jongseong’s lips. “I just made that excuse so I can ask you. It was Riki’s idea. Can’t believe it worked though.” He laughs.
“You know that I’ll go with you regardless of what the reason was, Sun.” Jongseong says. Sunoo only gives him a grin.
“Are you hungry?” Jongseong asks after a few seconds of staring at each other.
“Kind of.” Sunoo says, “I want chicken nuggets.” He adds.
Jongseong laughs, “Let’s go to Mcdonalds then.” He grins. No one dares to move, hands still entwined to each other. Sunoo tries to pull his hand back so they can get going but Jongseong does not let go, even pulling the younger male towards him instead. Sunoo giggles, burying himself in the other’s arms again, inhaling the scent of peppermint on Jongseong’s clothes.
“And Jungwonnie said that I’d probably be the clingier one.” He mumbles, teasing.
“Can’t help it ‘cause you’re too cute, baby.”
Sunoo cannot help but grin at the endearment. “Baby, huh?” He teases. He feels Jongseong laugh, his chest vibrating against his face. “Yeah, I can call you anything you want though whichever you prefer.” He says.
“Hmm, why don’t we go to Mcdonalds first before that? I’m getting hungrier.” Sunoo says instead. Jongseong chuckles, “Okay, okay. Let’s feed chicken nuggets to the baby.” He grins. This earned him a playful slap on the chest.
They drive to Mcdonalds silently. Jongseong, the clingier one apparently, holds Sunoo’s hand in his tightly, their fingers curled around each other. Their entwined hands rest on Jongseong’s thigh, Sunoo feeling the older male’s thumb softly rubbing the back of his hand.
They decide to eat in the car, Sunoo promising the elder that he’ll eat neatly to not spread crumbs on the expensive ass vehicle. Jongseong only laughs at him, saying that it was okay, that he can clean it anyway. But still, Sunoo eats his nuggets carefully, looking awfully cute while doing so. Jongseong does not stop himself from reaching out to pinch the younger male’s cheek anymore. Because he can, now.
“You’re too cute, sunshine.” He softly says.
Sunoo blushes at the new endearment.
“Stop… My heart is too weak.” The younger male whines.
“What?” Jongseong laughs, “You’re really adorable, Sun. My sunshine.” He grins.
Another gentle slap is what he gives the older male. Jongseong chuckles, grabbing the hand that slapped him and brings it to his lips, pressing a soft kiss on the back. Sunoo splutters, almost choking on his chicken nugget. Jongseong looks at him and smiles against Sunoo’s hand. “Your hand is so soft, it makes me want to hold it forever.” He says.
“That’s a long time, Jongseong-ssi.” Sunoo says, smiling at him. He wipes at his lips using the tissue, the oil from the nuggets getting too much for him.
He gives the hand another kiss, this time a little firm. “That’s because I want to be with you for a long time, until I can. Until you want me to.” He says, locking gazes with the younger male.
Sunoo stares at him, observing Jongseong’s face. He then laughs softly, “I don’t think I’d be able to not want you, Seongie hyung.” He says. “I want to be with you for a long time too.”
The grin on Jongseong’s face is so big it could rip his cheeks. He leans towards the younger male, “Be my boyfriend then, Kim Sunoo-ssi.” He quietly murmurs.
The younger male giggles, leaning to rest his forehead against Jongseong’s. “Why of course, Park Jongseong-ssi.” He mumbles.
Their eyes meet first before they both lean in, closing the gap between them in a tender kiss. Jongseong moves to reach the other male’s cheek, tilting his head. Sunoo sighs into the kiss, pressing back a little more as their lips move slowly.
Sunoo thinks that the movies he watched before were wrong. There were no fireworks, no bells ringing in his ears, there were no angels singing as he had his first kiss with the man he likes. But there is tenderness, love, and assurance. The way Jongseong delicately holds him, the way he cradles his face in his slightly calloused, but soft palm… Sunoo thinks this is a whole lot better than the ones in the movies. The best, probably.
Maybe it is because of Jongseong. Maybe he is biased. Maybe because he is doing it with the man he loves.
Sunoo does not know, he is not quite sure. He is not sure of many things.
But there is one thing he is sure of.
Sunoo is sure that he would want to kiss and love Jongseong for a long time, forever.
