Work Text:

This is it. Hugh O’Conner’s first day at Themis Legal Academy. The day he’d been looking forward to for years. Entering the grounds, he fails to suppress a grin.

The first half of the day passes without a hitch. Most of his teachers seem tolerable, and he’s even spotted a few students he might get along with. Next up is lunch. Easy.

He enters the cafeteria and immediately spots a kid sitting alone at a table in the corner, with his nose in an advanced law book. Curse his bleeding heart, he starts over to him. When he reaches the table and sits across from him, the boy shoots up from behind the book and gives him a look of pure, unfiltered disgust. What? When the glaring seems to not work, the boy slams the book on the table and stands up straight as a pole.

His voice dripping with vitriol, he hisses, “Y’know, when people look at you like roadkill , that usually means they want you to leave!” and Hugh is left as a deer in headlights. The boy scoffs. “Do I have to spell it out for you? GO AWAY.” There are people staring at him nearby, they're laughing. He backs off, as far away from here as he could possibly get. So much for trying to be nice.

Well, would you look at who's back. He wasn’t really sure what brought him back to Themis, after…. That. but this time, he wouldn’t be so reckless. Intentions do not matter here, high schoolers are among the most vicious creatures on the planet, topped only by middle schoolers and cape buffalo.

The day goes just about as expected, nothing special happens, nobody approaches him. He’s just skating by, and he’s fine with that. The dreaded period arrives soon enough. Lunch. There’s no reason he would fuck up that bad again, but seeing as how he never lived that down, he has reason enough to worry. He finds an empty table, coincidentally, the same one he ended up at the last time, and is content to avoid all of his peers. Until he can’t.

Two other students sit across from him. Shit. He looks them over. Two brunettes, one seemingly having stained his uniform already. The other looked much less outgoing, practically hiding behind the other.

The first speaks up, “you looked lonely over here. Name’s Robin! That’s Juniper.” He points at the other student, who gives a shy wave. Looks like he’s going to have to be sociable.

“Hugh O’Conner.” He was not prepared for this. They start actively trying to talk to him, and he really has no choice but to play nice. Though, Robin’s spirit is certainly something to be admired, and Juniper practically exudes kindness. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad, after all.
