Chapter Text
Kate looks around the room and sees Lucy sitting at her desk. She makes a beeline straight for her with her eyes only set on Lucy.
“Hey what are you doing here?” Lucy looks up before Kate is kneeling in front of her reaching her hand up to gently caress Lucy’s cheek.
“Are you okay? Tennant called and I came right over.” Kate tells Lucy as she lifts her chin with worry all over her face.
“Yes, I’m fine, you should see the other guy.” Lucy jokes as she tries to smile but it hurts too much.
“How can you be so calm right now Lucy. Someone almost killed you.” Kate replies as she stays right in front of Lucy not removing her hand from her cheek.
“I know, but I’m fine. Nothing that won’t heal on its own.” Lucy says as she sees how concerned Kate is, wanting to ease her worry.
Kate pauses before speaking again. “Let me take you home. We can order take out and I can stay with you just in case.”
“I’ll be fine Kate; I have to finish up this paperwork anyways.” Lucy doesn’t want Kate to just stay with her because she feels guilty.
“The work will be here in the morning, please let me take you home. I owe you an apology from earlier today anyways.” Kate pleads.
Lucy looks to Kate and sees how sincere she is and just nods. Kate lifts herself off the floor and let’s Lucy get up and gather her things.
“Ready?” Kate asks as she puts her hand out for Lucy to take. Lucy gladly accepts as Kate interlaces their fingers.
They walk gingerly knowing Lucy is still in pain. “Here let me take your bag.” Kate insists as she reaches for it with her free hand. She throws it over her shoulder as they continue to Kates’s car.
“Do you need to get anything from your apartment before we head to mine?” Lucy asks as they enter the elevator and push the button for the lobby.
“No, I’m pretty sure I have a pair of sweats at your apartment already, plus I was hoping you would say yes to me staying with you, so I brought a few things.” Kate looks to Lucy and smirks.
“You think highly of yourself don’t you Whistler.” Lucy jokes.
“I think highly of you.” Kate glances at Lucy and looks back at the elevator doors. Lucy smiles to herself and reaches for Kate’s hand as she interlaces their fingers again.
Once they get to the parking lot, Kate opens Lucy’s door for her as she gets in. Kate starts the car and heads out. “I was thinking that Chinese food place down the street from you for dinner. I can go in and pick it up and then we can head back to your apartment. Does that work for you?” Kate asks as she starts to drive carefully out of the parking lot.
“That sounds wonderful.” Lucy replies as they leave.
Kate grabs the food and helps Lucy out of the car before they get to her apartment door. Lucy opens it as they both head in. Lucy makes her way to the couch. “I’ll get our food ready. You just want water?” Kate asks as she takes the food and sets it on the counter.
“Water would be fine.” Lucy says as she slowly sits on the couch leaning against the backrest.
Kate grabs their plates and puts them on the tv trays before grabbing their drinks.
“You okay?” Kate asks as she sees Lucy trying to lift herself from the couch to sit up making it look more painful than it should.
“Yeah, just sore.” Lucy says smiling but Kate knows she isn’t feeling too great.
“Did the doctor give you any pain meds?” Kate asks before sitting down.
“Yes, they are in my bag, but I didn’t want to take them unless I needed to.” Lucy replies.
“Babe, I think you need too.” Kate tells Lucy as she goes to grab them for her.
Once she returns, she sits down next to Lucy and hands her the medicine. “Here, it will probably be good to take before you eat.” Lucy takes the pills and takes a sip of her water.
“Thank you.” Lucy smiles at Kate before Kate smiles back.
“Well let’s dig in. I’ll turn on that show you like and want me to like. It’s about time I catch up on the series.” Kate laughs as she turns the tv on.
“Wow, you watching my show, getting me dinner and being so attentive. Maybe I should get hurt more often.” Lucy jokes as she starts to slowly sip her soup knowing that chewing food would probably not be easy at this point.
Kate looks at Lucy seriously and turns towards her. Lucy can feel Kate’s eyes on her. She looks up and stops eating. “What?”
“You know I would do anything for you right? You don’t have to be hurt.” Kate says seriously.
“Are you sure about that?” Lucy replies not meaning it to come out so harsh.
Kate looks confused and sits back some. “What is that supposed to mean?” Kate questions.
“Nothing, forget I said anything.” Lucy tries to say.
“No Lucy, clearly something is on your mind so tell me.” Kate says a little defensively.
“I don’t know, you are so hot and cold all the time with me. I don’t know which Kate I’m going to get. I think we are doing great and then bam something happens or you say something and then I don’t know where we stand.” Lucy lets it all out.
“I understand how it looks, but I’m still trying to figure myself out and I would rather that be between you and I more so than everyone I work with.” Kate tries to say.
“Look I told you that’s fine for now, but you have to be yourself with me. I don’t want the cold shoulder or to be pushed aside when you get uncomfortable. I hate not knowing what I’m supposed to do when I see you at work or when we are out with friends.” Lucy doesn’t know where this strength is coming from, but it’s something that needs to be said.
Kate sighs and tries to gather her thoughts before speaking again. “I know, you aren’t wrong, but Lucy I don’t even know how I’m supposed to act. I want to run up to you and just kiss you when we are together or hold your hand, but then I think about everyone around us and clam up. I know what you’re going say, but I’m not like you Lucy. I can’t just be outgoing and not care about what people think all the time.”
Lucy looks to Kate and isn’t sure of what she wants to say. “I know, just forget I said anything.” Lucy tries to say as she goes to pick up her spoon, but before she can Kate stops her.
“When Tennant called me and told me what happened, all I could think about was you. I wanted you to be okay and I couldn’t bare the thought of you being hurt. I think it made me realize that I don’t care what people think, I just want you.” Kate tries to keep her composure, but wipes her eyes to keep her tears at bay.
Lucy reaches out to Kate and caresses her cheek gently, lifting up her chin. “Hey, I know, I know. I’m sorry, I’m just tired of not knowing.”
“No, you have nothing to be sorry for. I get what you are saying. I’m going to try harder Lucy, I promise.” Kate tells her as she leans in to give Lucy a gentle kiss.
Kate pulls back just enough to whisper to her. “I don’t want to hurt you.”
“Your kisses never hurt.” Lucy whispers as she leans back in and deepens the kiss. They kiss feeling as if it’s the first time in a while.
“I think your soup is getting cold, and we have missed the first half of the show already.” Kate laughs and pulls back.
Lucy laughs with her and starts to eat again as they enjoy each other’s company.
They finish eating so Kate takes their plates and puts everything away before going back to the couch sitting next to Lucy.
Kate leans back as Lucy snuggles up against her. Kate gently wraps her arms around Lucy’s waist and pulls her closer.
“You doing okay? Need anything?” Kate asks, as they continue to watch tv.
“Just this.” Lucy smiles as she leans into Kate. Kate kisses the top of Lucy’s head as they continue to enjoy each other’s company.
After a couple of episodes Kate can feel Lucy asleep on her chest. She debates on whether to wake her, but she knows she would sleep better in bed.
“Hey babe.” Kate starts to say as she gently shakes Lucy’s shoulder.
It takes a few minutes but Lucy begins to stir. “What time is it?” Lucy asks groggily.
“Not too late, but I know you want to get a shower and get into bed. You’ll feel better.” Kate suggests.
“You’re right but you’re so comfortable.” Lucy turns to look up at Kate smiling. Kate leans down and gives Lucy a peck on her lips before lifting her up.
“I know we are, but I’m betting we would be more comfortable in bed.” Kate says as Lucy starts to sit up.
Kate gets up first as she reaches her hand out to help Lucy up the rest of the way. “You going to be okay?”
“Yeah, I’ll be fine. You want to get a shower after me then.” Lucy asks as she turns towards Kate before her bedroom.
“Yes, I’m going to clean up out here and then head in.” Kate responds before Lucy disappears into her bedroom.
It takes a bit of time, but eventually Lucy and Kate make it to bed. Lucy gingerly lays down before Kate gets in on the other side.
“Do you need anything before we go to sleep?” Kate asks as she begins to cover both of them up with the blanket.
“There is one thing.” Lucy starts to say as she looks up at Kate.
“Name it.” Kate replies.
“You to hold me.” Lucy almost whispers.
Kate just smiles and moves closer to Lucy as Kate becomes the big spoon. Kate wraps her arms around Lucy’s waist as Lucy places her hand on top of Kate’s.
“Goodnight babe.” Kate whispers as she kisses the top of Lucy’s head.
“Goodnight.” Lucy replies as she snuggles closer to Kate, and falls asleep easily.
The next morning the alarm starts to go off way to soon. Lucy is the first one to stir as she turns and looks to Kate still sleeping soundly.
Lucy goes to turn off the alarm before looking back over to Kate. She slowly starts to caress her cheek loving these moments that they don’t have too often.
Before too long she leans in and starts gently kissing all around Kate’s face starting with her cheek, moving to her jaw and back up.
“If this is how I’m going to be woken up, then I may never need an alarm again.” Kate smirks as she opens her eyes and brings Lucy’s lips to hers.
“I don’t think I would ever get out of bed then.” Lucy laughs.
“Do we have to get up?” Kate whines wanting to spend as much time alone with Lucy as she can.
“I believe so, I do have that paperwork that I didn’t finish last night.” Lucy grins.
“Fine, but let me at least make you breakfast.” Kate says.
“Now that sounds great.” Lucy replies leaning in to give Kate one more kiss before going to get dressed for the day.
Kate makes her way out of bed and heads to the kitchen. She sets the coffee and starts to make something simple for the both of them knowing they both need to get to work.
After a few minutes Lucy heads into the kitchen ready for the day. “Smells good in here.” Lucy grabs a cup for coffee and begins to pour herself some and make a cup for Kate still remembering how she likes it.
“It’s almost ready, go sit and I’ll bring it over.” Kate responds as she gets their plates together and makes her way to the kitchen table.
“Eggs, bacon and toast, can’t go wrong with that.” Kate says as she sits down next to Lucy and begins to eat.
“You were always good at making breakfast.” Lucy makes small talk as she begins to eat too.
“Hey, I can make more than just breakfast. I make a mean spaghetti too you know.” Kate jokes as they continue to talk and eat.
“You will just have to show me sometime then.” Lucy smiles.
They continue to eat and chat for a bit before Lucy looks at the clock. “I have to get going or I’m going to be later than I already am.” Lucy starts to say as she gets up to put her dishes in the sink.
“Yeah, I need to head home and get changed before heading into work as well.” Kate responds as she walks up behind Lucy.
Lucy turns towards her. “So will I see you again tonight?” Lucy asks not wanting to sound desperate but after last night she knows what they can be.
“Of course, if that’s what you want.” Kate smiles as she gently pushes some hair out of Lucy’s face.
“Yes, it is.” Lucy smiles back as they stare at each other for a little to long.
Kate removes her hand. “Well, I should get going then.” Kate says as she starts to gather her things and heads to the front door.
Lucy follows her out and stops once Kate turns around. “Take it easy at work today please. I really don’t want to get another phone call from Tennant.” Kate starts to say jokingly but also being serious at the same time.
“I promise to stay on desk duty all day.” Lucy laughs.
Kate smiles back before leaning in to give Lucy a kiss that means more than just goodbye. Kate steps back and smiles. “I’ll text you later.” Kate smiles before heading out.
