Work Text:

Forward march and he we go, members of the agency Bakugo!

Katsuki led his friends across the fallen tree, confident in his steps. What kind of game should they play today? Heroes, obviously, but what should the mission be…

Suddenly, he lost his footing and found himself falling. His eyes locked with his best friend and he barely had time to think please, catch me before he landed and was soaked in water. He sat up, rubbing the back of his head. Then Deku was in front of him, holding his hand out like Katsuki had wanted just moments before.

“Are you okay? Did you hit your head?”

But Katsuki was fine. He didn’t need help. Embarrassed, he smacked Deku’s hand away.

For as long as he’d known what a hero was, Katsuki had wanted to be one. In particular, he wanted to be like All Might. The very best. He was off to a good start with his powerful explosions. Everyone thought so.

All Might, it turned out, didn’t have a sidekick anymore. He didn’t need a weaker hero like Sir Nighteye to bail him out. Katsuki didn’t need a sidekick either. The next time Deku tried to follow him, he made sure to discourage the useless nerd from doing so. The other extras could do whatever the hell they wanted, everyone would know Katsuki was the one in charge.

When Katsuki heard Deku still wanted to go to UA, he was pissed. He was supposed to stand out by being the only one from their shitty school to make it in. All might certainly didn’t have old schoolmates nipping at his heels. Not even Endeavor could compete with him.

So Katsuki yelled at the nerd, said some things. He might have gone a little overboard. But he couldn’t have Deku getting in his way.

Katsuki couldn’t breathe. The sludge was forcing itself down his throat, and his explosions weren’t doing enough. Dammit, he was supposed to BE a hero, not NEED heroes! The shitty heroes weren’t even doing anything! Katsuki looked desperately at the crowd, wishing for someone to help him out. So much for being like All Might. As his vision faded to black, he thought he saw his old best friend reaching out.
