Work Text:
Marcy stared outside the window with a sense of melancholy.
It had been a week since the three girls had gotten back from Amphibia. Marcy’s parents allowed her time to recover before announcing that they still had to move. There were tears, of course, but Marcy had long since accepted that this was going to happen. Still, it hurt to separate from her best friends, especially after all they went through together.
She looked over to her right at Anne and Sasha, who were sitting in the back of the car with her. Anne was lying on her shoulder, while Sasha had reached over to hold her hand. “Anna-banana?” Marcy quietly asked. “Sashy?”
“Yeah, Mar-mar?” They said in unison.
“Thanks for coming with me to the airport,” she said quietly. “I really appreciate it.”
“Anytime, Marcy,” Sasha said, squeezing her hand. “You aren’t leaving us without a goodbye, dork.” Marcy chuckled. Anne just grabbed her arm with one of her hands and nuzzled into her shoulder.
The car stopped. Marcy sighed, trying to ignore the lump forming in her throat.
Anne untangled herself from Marcy and the three girls exited the car, Anne grabbing her backpack on the way out. Mr. and Mrs. Wu got out of the car as well and moved to the trunk to get their suitcases out. Marcy went to do that as well, but was visibly struggling.
“I got you,” Sasha said, reaching past her to get the suitcase out of the car.
“Curse these weak nerd arms,” Marcy mumbled under her breath, causing both Anne and Sasha to laugh. All of it sounded just the slightest bit strained. After all, they all knew what was coming next. Marcy pulled up the handle of her suitcase and rolled it towards the sidewalk, Anne and Sasha following close behind. Mr. and Mrs. Wu were standing on the sidewalk, giving the three girls a soft smile.
“We’ll give you some time to say your goodbyes,” Mrs. Wu said, kissing Marcy on the cheek. “You know where you’ll find us, right?”
“Yeah,” Marcy replied quietly.
“We’re sorry that it had to be this way,” Mr. Wu said, giving his daughter a hug.
“I know,” Marcy said, hugging back. She waved as her parents walked through the airport doors. Then, it was just them. Just Marcy, Anne, and Sasha. They stood in silence for a bit, staring at each other.
“So,” Marcy broke the silence, “this is it, huh?” Anne sniffled and Sasha looked on the verge of tears.
“Gosh, I don’t even know what to say,” Marcy said, looking down at her shoes. “I guess…thank you. For being my friend. For saving me from the Core. You girls mean everything to me, okay? Thank you so much for everything you’ve done for me.” The two girls remained silent. Marcy started to look up. “So,uh…” She looked at Anne and Sasha. Both of them had tears running down their cheeks.
“Oh no! I didn’t mean to make you-” Marcy started, before being buried in a hug from the two crying girls. She began to tear up as well, holding them tight. The three girls continued to hug each other while sobbing and occasionally saying something completely incomprehensible.
“Sorry for the waterworks, Marce,” Anne said, chuckling. They pulled out of the hug, still holding on to each other’s shoulders.
“We’ll text every day, I promise,” Sasha said with a small smile. Marcy gave both of them a big grin, a couple tears still formed in her eyes.
“We, um, got some gifts for you,” Anne said, putting her backpack on the floor and opening it.
“Aww, you didn’t have to-” Marcy said, getting interrupted when Sasha covered her eyes with her hands. She giggled. She heard Anne shuffling around in the backpack.
“Okay! You can look now!” Anne exclaimed, excited. Sasha moved her hands away. Marcy looked down at Anne’s hands and gasped.
It was a brand new journal. The journal was violet and covered with blue, pink, and green star stickers. In the middle of the cover was a label with the words “Marcy’s Journal 2.0” on it, along with two drawings of Marcy, one signed Anne and the other signed Sasha.
“We noticed how you were almost finished with your old one, so we got you a brand new one!” Anne said, smiling. Marcy took it delicately out of her hands.
“Our drawings aren’t nearly as good as yours though, heh,” Sasha remarked.
“Marbles?”
Marcy was clutching the journal to her chest tightly. She looked up at Anne and Sasha with tears in her eyes and a massive smile on her face. “It’s perfect,” She simply said. “Thank you so much.”
“Of course, we can’t forget our other gift,” Sasha said, smirking at Anne, who blushed.
“Ooo, what-” Marcy started.
Anne kissed her.
Marcy let out a surprised squeak. Anne stayed there for a couple seconds and then pulled away, face completely beet-red. “W-w-wha-” Marcy stuttered out, face also completely red. Before she had any time to process that, Sasha grabbed her face.
She kissed her too.
When Sasha pulled away, she had a small smile on her face. Marcy was completely sure that her brain had lost all function at that point. She looked back at Anne, then at Sasha.
Sasha looked over at Anne as if it was her cue to say something, but noticed that Anne had buried her face in her hands. She sighed. “We love you, Marcy,” she said. “Obviously we can’t fully be girlfriends until we work out some…issues. But we just wanted you to know how much we love you.”
“You? And Anne? Me?” Marcy asked, brain clearly still rebooting. Sasha nodded, looking proud of herself.
“W-whenever you feel lonely,” Anne said, somewhat recovered from her fluster, “you can always remember that we’re out there and we’ll always love you.”
Marcy squealed with excitement. “Gosh, you don’t know how long- I love you guys too!” She ran forwards, somehow not dropping the journal, to give them a tight hug. The two girls hugged her back, smiling. None of them wanted to let go.
Sasha looked at the airport doors, noticing how the Wus were awkwardly standing there in order to wait for Marcy. She sighed. “You should…probably go now.”
“Yeah…” Marcy mumbled. The three girls reluctantly separated and Marcy grabbed the handle of her suitcase. She stared at them for a couple seconds and smiled. “Take care of each other, okay?”
“We will, I promise,” said Anne. “Bye, Marbles.”
“Bye, Marce,” said Sasha.
Marcy began to walk towards the doors of the airport. She looked back at her best friends, for hopefully not the last time.
“See you on the other side.”
