known unknowns

Summary:

Akane and Phi are in a history abandoned. A snapshot.

Notes:

Written in 2016 for Beat the Black Dog on LJ. Liked it, cleaned it up and posted it. I thiiiiink there's technically a history where these two could be alone together, the one where Junpei and Carlos die in the rec room and Diana and Sigma die in the trash disposal room? It feels good to post again.

Work Text:

"Akane, come on, eat." Phi pressed the canned meat into her hand and frowned when Akane just stared at her. Her hand gripped the can but she didn't touch the food. A grease stain from the last meal, when Phi'd tried to force-feed her, marred her white shirt. It was Phi's overshirt, which she'd given Akane after finding her cowering outside the rec room, covered in blood and viscera and alone. "If you can remember the X-Passes, we can get out of here and you can have whatever you want, you know."

Phi shivered, stuck with her black tanktop and shorts in the cold, staid air of the bunker, and rubbed her upper arms. "It might be warmer, too." Her voice was pitchy like she was talking to a pre-schooler. She'd had to lead Akane around by the wrist, staining her own skin with -- Junpei's? Carlos'? Both? -- blood, undress her in the locker room, tell her to shower, throw her ruined dress into a bucket of bleach and water and pray. A pre-schooler would be more functional right now.

Akane set the can next to Phi on the coffee table, and folded her hands in her lap. She shook her head. Phi sighed.

"Did everyone have to leave me alone?" Phi muttered, her voice breaking like a music box thrown against a wall. In the background, the TVs hummed as if they were about to turn on any moment, but Zero was silent, Akane was silent, and the others were forever silent.
