Scar keeps her eyes on the bottle cap flipping around her fingers. She flicks it across the room, hitting the broken terminal on the desk. She’s fucking bored out of her mind. Small noises come from the other room, drawing her attention. She gets up from the beaten-up couch she had been lounging on and heads to the kitchen.
A woman stands there, frying something in a pan. Scar sits on the table, watching her for a second.
“Whatcha makin’ there Cass?” Cass startles imperceptibly, surprised by the sound of Scar’s voice. She spins around, hiding what she was making behind her. Cass opens her mouth, presumably to make some sort of excuse, but the look on Scar’s face makes her deflate a bit and sigh.
“I was trying to make ya the corn you always make, god knows I’ve seen ya make it enough, but I can’t get the taste right.” The puppy dog look she sends over has Scar laughing and hopping down to see if she can figure out what’s gone wrong. She takes a spoonful of the corn and immediately knows what it’s missing. She rummages through a few cupboards before she finds what she’s looking for.
“You forgot to add the jalapeno to it, it’s one of the most important ingredients.” She moves to the cutting board next to Cass. “Without it, it will be unbalanced, too sweet. But you have to make sure to not add too much, or it’ll take over.” The words feel familiar, almost like they aren’t her own, but she decides not to dwell on it. After a moment, she grabs the handful of pepper and tosses it in the pan, a sizzle erupting from it.
“You’ll figure it out soon babe.” Scar presses a kiss to Cass’s cheek before wrapping her arms around her waist and placing her head between her shoulder blades. They stay there for a while, sharing the quiet moment. They don’t get these much, so they enjoy it while they can. All the people asking them to do things, all the creatures waiting outside, it’s all put aside. They can just live in the moment.
