Work Text:
He tried to shut the door as gently as possible so as to not disturb her. He really did. He just.. had a lot of built up tension from the day. Which may or may not have ended up making the front door close in more of a slam. Light visibly winced as the door slammed, his wings fluffing out of shock and guilt. Bad memories ran through his head with that sound, and he knew she didn’t like it either. But even with that twinge of guilt in his chest, her voice still cut through all those worries like butter
“..rough day at work dear?”
Rose softly preened to him, cupping the side of Light’s cheek to get him to look at her. He felt a warmth rush to his cheeks as he searched her expression, feeling himself go soft as he found no malice in it. She wasn’t angry. She wasn’t scared. She was smiling at him with a softness that made him weak in the knees. He merely gave a tired chuckle in response, tipping his face into her hand as he let his own reach to hers.
“Not quite. Just some nerves.”
Which wasn't entirely true. But he wasn’t a talker. Rose knew that. So of course, she merely gave him a toying pout. Softly pinching his cheek with a giggle
“Come on now. Sit with me. We can talk all about it.”
“Mm.. I think I’d much rather hear about your day, love.”
“You’re impossible, you know that?~”
She couldn’t help but tease, pulling an earnest smile from that face she adored. Light merely rolled his eyes, holding that smile of adoration for her.
Making the hasty decision to hold the hand that had previously been cupping his face, easily spinning her around. Rose gave a surprised laugh, but no resistance. Allowing herself to spin, her skirt splaying out in a beautiful rotation. It was enough to make any man obsessed. Light walked them around the living room in waltz esc circles before spinning Rose back into his arms, folding his wings around them both.
“..I love you..~”
He whispered to her, softly kissing her jaw and the supple curve of her cheeks.
“I know~”
“You know?”
“I just know.”
“You always do~”
Their words were exchanged quietly within the warmth of each other, soft feathers hiding them from the outside world. For a few moments, they didn’t say anything. Merely enjoying each other’s company. Tangling fingers in small curled loops of hair. Letting their breathing synergize with the other. Soaking in the feeling of the moment that filled their chests. The silent knowledge that they wouldn’t be able to live without each other.
Rose gently rocked on her heels, her back gently brushing against Light’s wings. She always had so many questions about them. Questions Light probably wouldn’t mind if she asked, but the thought of asking always seemed so silly. Light could see her thinking, but didn’t find too much of a point in pressing her. She’d speak her mind if she felt like it. It was one of his favorite things about her. He could listen to her talk for hours, and he often would. She’d always turn so pink when she realized how long she’d been talking. It made him want to squeeze that embarrassment out of her and kiss her little face until she started talking again.
That look of wonder on her face. Those gears quietly turning behind large, doe-like eyes. A voice that could soothe even the strongest storms. Just thinking about it made him lean in and kiss her, easing them both onto the living room couch. Happily pulling her up onto his chest as he laid back. Rose gave a little hum in response, wrapping her arms around his waist to shimmy closer. Making sure to carefully slip them under the bottom of his wings as they folded out to the sides. One ending up stuck against the back of the couch, the other stretching out to the floor.
Her face had done it again. Turn the prettiest shade of coral pink. Light couldn’t help but give her a dopey smile as he stared up at the woman on his chest. Rose merely smiled back down at him after she had managed to pull herself away from their oral embrace. Pressing the gentlest of kisses to his forehead, and leaving butterfly kisses as she pulled back to look over him. If she had her way, this is what all their days would look like. All the time. Just her and him. Maybe not quite like this, as she’d rather be in bed than on the couch, but this worked. It was good enough for her.
“..feeling any better?”
“Well, it certainly worked as a distraction~”
“Hey now, you’re the one who picked me up and spun me~”
Their playful banter continued, being interrupted by a few more closings of the gap between their faces. Inveloping in the others warmth and company.
“..yes. I do feel better. Thank you Rose.”
“I love you too much for you to keep doing this to yourself, Light.”
“..I know.”
“You always do.”
There was a slight bite in her retort, but he knew she wasn’t angry. She was concerned. Even in that concern, she was still smiling. Her joy was unbridled. Even more things he couldn’t help but obsess over when it came to her. Rose gently ran the tips of her fingers over his jaw again, the corners of her eyes softly creasing with worry. Those corners being reassured by the gentle brush of feathers. His wing softly folding back up to edge the side of her face, earning a squeeze from around his waist.
Rose merely squeezed her own eyes shut as she finally rested her head against his chest, feeling the weight of those wings she knew so well rest against her back. Her worries only slightly soothed by his reassurance. But she did seem to melt against him as she listened to his heartbeat. Light gently stroked her hair, doing his best to continue to ease her. She’d always be his better half. Anyone with eyes could tell that. He’d always wondered how he got so lucky in the draw of love. He wasn’t going to complain of course. But it still lingered in the back of his mind in quiet moments like these.
“..I love you, Rose.”
“I know.”
“..I mean it.”
“I know.
..I love you too.”
With a soft shuffle to look at eachother again, and a gentle peck against his collarbone, Rose was out like a light. Couldn’t help herself. She was just that easy of a sleeper. Light merely chuckled to himself as he left one hand lazily in her hair, tracing the other down her back to rest in the small of her spine. Making sure she was secured against him, under his wings. He loved her. So much. He didn’t say it enough. He knew that. But god did he love her.
She was his Cloud Nine.
