(A photo of two trainers, who are instantly recognizable as Champion Ash Ketchum and Four time League Winner and Hoenn’s Mikuri Season Elite Four Member Tyson, are shaking hands in front of a formidable looking building. Both of them are smiling. A pikachu is also shaking paws with a Meowth wearing a hat and boots. A Gardevoir is pictured a little ways back, seemingly holding a conversation with a Mawile.)
The Frontier is unbreached. The Battle Citadel remains unconquered. Frontier Brain Ketchum, the Citadel Sovereign, has defeated challenger Tyson of Mauville City. In an epic final clash between Fairy type pokemon, the Sovereign’s Gardevoir emerged victorious over the challenger’s Mawile. The Battle Frontier gives its best wishes to the Challenger and hopes for his return to the circuit to overcome the frontier once more.)
( Video clip of the last clash between the Frontier Brain Ketchum and Challenger )
(Video description:
A Gardevoir faces a Mega Mawile. The Embrace pokemon expertly dodged a vicious looking Iron Head but Mega Mawile’s secondary jaws attacked unexpectedly with Bite. Gardevoir Teleports and appears in front of Mega Mawile and hits it with Confusion. Then it unleashes a Thunderbolt at the confused pokemon. When the smoke clears Mega Mawile has reverted to Mawile and is knocked out.)

Several things I’m in awe of in this battle:
First of all, Tyson and his Mega Mawile are amazing. Yeah sure Tyson lost but this might have been the closest Citadel Battle I've seen since the Citadel exhibition match between Pyramid King Brandon and Citadel Sovereign Ketchum five years ago.
Second, Gardevoir remains a beast. Most trainers with Gardevoirs stick with a psychic emphasised, evasive style of battling. The Sovereign's Gardevoir however, acts like a mean heavyweight. It's just so cool to see.
Third, do you guys know how rare Fairy/Steel type pokemon are? You can count them in one hand and still have a finger left. Two of them, Zacian-Crowned Sword and Magearna are legendaries! That leaves just Mawile and Klefki! Being part steel type means that steel type moves, which fairy type is weak to don’t really work! So we not only got to see a rare typing but also a mega evolution of that typing!
Fourth, Gardevoir beat a Mega Evolved pokemon while at a type disadvantage and tired from an earlier battle. Let that sink in…
Finally I really hope Tyson comes back man! His Meowth is dripped out as heck! Look at the swagger!

Do you guys think Gardevoir is ready to move up a tier yet? He’s improved so much so he must be at least closer to the tier boundary right?

Hah, don't make me laugh. As if that pansy ass mon is gonna make it that far. Now if it had evolved into a Gallade like it was supposed to then it might've made it. But no it's some girly looking mon. This entire Frontier battle was a joke. Using Fairy type of all things pssshhh

Let me guess, you don’t like ‘pansy’ ass mon like Fairy types, probably rants about how contests and performances are a waste of time, thinks Champion Wallace isweak and the Mikuri Season shouldn’t exist at all etc etc.

@alltimefrontiersimp
@vapebay So I’m answering your questions here instead of in the replies cos the chains can get ridiculously long and cluttered
First, a history lesson:
Pokemon Tiers is a concept that pokemon battle fans use to classify the power levels of pokemon. It is not currently an official league thing even though there were rumours flying around for a while that the league might officially recognize this or might bring out something similar for years now. Last year the @LeagueChallengeGlobal confirmed the rumours and the next league circuit will be using the Tier System and all League records will be updated accordingly. So it will be an official league system but only starting next year.
The league currently only uses categories like Conference level, Gym Leader level, E4 level, Champion level etc., which are ludicrously inefficient. For example a conference winner’s pokemon might be on par with a Gym Leader’s top team. There are gym leaders like the Galar Hammerlocke Stadium Gym leader Raihan who can beat E4 members and give any Champion a run for their money and even win at times. But because of his position the League considers his team Gym Leader level. The problem evidently is that the current system is based on the trainers’ official position rather than their actual skill level.
So about ten years ago veteran pokemon battle fandom member and professional battle analyst Takahashi Manabu from Kanto, or Kayden as he is known outside the Kanto-Johto-Orange Islands coalition and the Alola region, devised the Tier System of classification. You can actually find the original video where he introduced the system on their Poketube channel, though be warned it's 4 hours long. He also published his paper in the Scientific Battler, Kanto’s foremost Pokemon Battle Analyst publication, Pokemon Research Monthly, the best pokemon research publication in Kanto, and in Research Pokerealm, the most prominent pokemon research journal internationally.
Despite the widespread acclaim of this system, and the Kanto-Johto-Orange Islands League Committee’s support of it, the official Pokemon League did not consider it as a prospective replacement for the faulty system they were using. Even when pokemon professors including the GOAT himself, Professor Oak, Pokemon Champions and the fandom at large began using it.
They are only considering it now because One, the Grand Champion, is Kantonian and uses it exclusively, prompting the KJO coalition League Committees, the Alola League Committee, and the World Coronation Series to use it as their official classification system.
Two, the Pokemon Contest Committee adopted it five years ago, under the advice of their consulting partners, the Pokemon Medical Board, the Pokemon Breeding and Welfare Society, and the Pokemon Connoisseur Association.
Three, the Grand Champion is the founder of the Orange Island Showcase Grand Prix so consequently the Grand Prix uses this method and then Monsieur Pierre adapted it for the official Pokemon Showcase Committee.
And four, the Battle Frontier adopted this system only two years after it was introduced proving themselves to be the absolute goats when it comes to battling innovation(Yeah I’m simping but I’m right so sue me)...in essence literally everyone was using it so the League had to do something and even now they are dragging their feet and letting everyone know they are only doing it begrudgingly. Smh…how can some regional league committees be absolutely badass but the global overseeing body be such killjoys?
Second, the deets:
So the tier system classifies pokemon into X, S, A, B, C, D, and E tiers. The great advantage of this system is its flexibility. Takahashi designed the system so that the variables can be altered according to the situation. So Battle Tiers are different from Coordinating Tiers which in turn are different from Showcase Tiers. There is a fascinating video on how the system is adjusted on Poketube which I’ll link below.
So the areas the system considers are too many for me to type out here so I’ll just point out the most important ones: battle experience- both trainer and pokemon, synchronicity, win percentage, win percentage at disadvantage, synergy, care factor, type advantage quotient, team value quotient, ability coefficient, strategy accommodation quotient, battlefield adjustment variable, opponent tier factor, region based variable, and finally evolution factor. By considering these major factors and dozens of minor ones, we can classify the tier of a pokemon.
For example, a beginner trainer’s pokemon will most likely rank in the E or D tier but the system allows us to account for stronger pokemon who partnered up with a beginner trainer or an experienced trainer’s newer pokemon etc. As you might have guessed the strongest pokemon go in the X-tier, these are pokemon who can take down even legendaries. In the case of the Frontier battle we were discussing, both Gardevoir and Mega Mawile are S-Tier pokemon. According to the Tier equation however Mega Mawile had a slight advantage so its impressive Gardevoir overcame that. This victory will of course affect Gardevoir’s Tier. One thing to note is that the type advantage quotient is inversely proportional to the Tier. At E Tier type advantage might as well decide the entirety of a battle. But at say, the A Tier and above, the type advantage quotient becomes negligible. So while Mega Mawile’s typing is indeed interesting, in my opinion, Gardevoir’s strength should not be measured according to that.
Third, what’s up with Gardevoir:
So Gradevoir was added to Champion Ketchum’s team after his Grand Champion title. From interviews and the rare training videos it's clear that Gardevoir is a battle maniac and wants to join the Champion’s X-team. It was already pretty powerful even as a Ralts, starting off strong at C-Tier before climbing the ranks at a rapid pace. As a Kirlia, he was at the top fringes of B-Tier. As a Gardevoir it established itself as a powerhouse in the S-Tier but the ambition to reach X-Tier hasn’t waned. Many analysts and myself agree that this battle puts it at the cusp of advancing but not enough to truly cross over. If you ask me it won’t be longer before he joins his X-teammates. A mega evolution would certainly speed up the process though.
Fourth, what exactly is a Grand Champion,
A Grand Champion title is the first title of its kind and it was created exclusively to be awarded to Ash Ketchum, who held an impossible four titles at the same time, in addition to a Frontier Brain title. Not to mention a whole host of other responsibilities. I still can’t believe a human being managed all that. Bruh, I can't even get out of bed most days. He was just ten and a half when he won the Orange League and became the Kanto Secondary Champion, Champion Lance’s second-in-command, becoming the youngest Champion ever, displacing Champion Leon who became Champion of Galar at eleven, though he didn’t take any responsibilities much like Champion Leon, because you know, they were like babies. Official responsibilities were completed by proxy by Supreme Gym Leader Drake and Chairman Rose respectively. Since the Orange League was a secondary league, winners are still allowed to compete in primary leagues. Captain Drake was undefeated until Champion Ketchum and to this day no one has defeated him in an official Orange League match to earn the right to challenge Champion Ketchum and gain his title. (To all those who said that the Orange League wasn’t an official league, talk to the official Kanto League paperwork with President Goodshow’s and Champion Lance’s signatures on it losers)
Then at age eighteen, Champion Ketchum became the first ever Alola League Champion. He won the Alola League and then defeated The Tapu Koko itself, The Guardian of Conflict , who partnered up with the strongest trainer in the region, who was undefeated in Alola’s Battle Royale tournaments I might add, to gain the title of Champion of Alola. You can’t get any more legitimate than that. Which champion can actually claim they were crowned by an actual fucking deity huh? (Yes this is directed at those losers who cried about Alola not being a ‘proper’ league only to shut up when the League announced his title at the WCS Masters 8. Yeah I’m still salty about that.)
At 19 Champion Ash defeated Champion Leon at the finals of the WCS Master’s 8, and became the Monarch. His rise through the rankings was nothing less than meteoric. In my entire time following the WCS, I have never seen someone advance so quickly and he had the toughest of opponents, including an E4 member, a champion, the strongest gym leader in Galar, and the strongest gym leader in Sinnoh…
At 20, Champion Ketchum was invited by Champion Lance to battle the Kanto E4 and try for the title. Champion Lance later said in an interview that he felt like it was high time that Kanto had an Official Champion once again. Link to the interview will be provided below. Since you are a beginner @vapebay you might not know much about the Kanto-Johto situation (sorry if I’m wrong and come off as condescending) other than the fact they are the only two regions who share an E4 and a Champion, and have their base in Johto as Champion Lance is based out of Johto’s Blackthorn City, named after his clan itself. It is to be noted that they don’t neglect Kanto. In fact, they patrol Kanto more than Johto, especially due to the presence of Team Rocket Cells in the region.
Get ready for the biggest mysteries of the Pokemon League, with secrets that won’t leave Kanto borders. (I’m being serious, even the overseeing body don’t know what happened and all those involved won’t speak a word)
The entire history of the Kanto League is mysterious. Conspiracy theories abound about what happened. Even Champion Ketchum’s family history is caught up in all that happened but no one involved would ever blow the whistle. I might be sounding like a conspiracy theorist but I know that there would be consequences for whoever let anything slip.(Yikes)
Here is what is known: At one point in time, Samuel Oak (Yes, that Samuel Oak, yes, The Pokemon Professor, yes, the inventor of the pokedex) was Champion of the Kanto League. We know that E4 Agatha was part of the E4 that Prof. Oak defeated to become Champion (seriously that woman has seen so much and has so many secrets). It is unknown whether Oak formed his own E4 but it is most likely that he inherited his E4 from his predecessor. We don’t know who this was, where they came from, what pokemon they had, all records are lost. Neither Prof. Oak or Agatha have ever said anything about this person. This is unsettling as every other league has had extensive records even in toughest times. Kalos kept League records straight during the revolution for Arceus’s sake. So yeah…kinda creepy. Anyhow, it was during Oak’s tenure as Champion that Kanto entered Civil War with Team Rocket on one side and the Regional government and League on the other side. During this time something happened that prompted Champion Oak to retire to his home in Pallet town. What that something was, again we don’t know. Although the fact that he raised his three grandchildren alone, has some tragic implications.
It is theorised that either Oak’s predecessor and the other three of the then Kanto E4 perished in the war or if they survived, don’t wish to be known. To this day, the comparative lack of adults in Kanto, the age of legal adulthood being goddamned ten in Kanto, Kanto’s reputation as the ‘boonies’ in parts of Unova(part of the war had managed to spill over into the region due to Team Rocket having bases in Unova, so some cities were brutally hit with the numerous battles that erupted between the two sides. Lt. Surge, now Gym Leader of Vermillion City ended up in Kanto as part of the Unovan special forces fighting against Team Rocket cells trying to smuggle arms and pokemon from Unova into Kanto, and ended up staying and gaining a Kanto citizenship and later a Gym Leader position. These incidents have pushed an image of Kanto as a lawless, violent land in Unova. Although this misconception was mostly gone by our generation, small pockets of Unovans in affected areas like Nuvema Town, especially ones whose families were caught in the crossfire, continued to hold a little prejudice towards Kanto), the still existing formidable strength of Team Rocket in the region, all can be blamed on the Kanto Civil War.
Back to the topic of the League, after Oak’s retirement, the post remained vacant and the League practically non-existent with only Agatha remaining in the E4. Obviously this is not ideal. So the Kanto League promoted those young trainers who had distinguished themselves in the war to E4 positions. Thus Lance, Lorelei, and Will entered the Elite 4. Still there was no Champion.
Now comes another twist. You see, Kanto and Johto were at war in the Ancient times or rather the various kingdoms of the Kanto region were at war with the various kingdoms in the Johto region. Historians believe that it is this war that actually unified the kingdoms of both sides and laid the foundations of modern day unified Kanto and Johto. Records of this war can be found in the still existing Rota Kingdom of Kanto and even in records found in Sinnoh, Iron Island in particular for some reason we haven’t been able to decode. What we do know is that Johto lost and became a vassal region to Kanto. The loss is attributed to the presence of various power users and ninjas in Kanto service(Yeah I’m not joking. Kanto still has those by the way. It’s a strange place. Yeah I know Kalos has Olympia and her students and even ninjas(presumably, it's not clear, they'd be poor ninjas if they were clearly known) but Kanto’s population of powered people, who make themselves known to the world itself is overwhelmingly large, to say nothing of those who keep it private. Me thinks of the ‘humans are pokemon’ theory but that's a story for another time).
As time passed and the Kingdoms on both sides started to erode, the vassalage of Johto to Kanto eased. By the time of the Kanto Civil War, it was more along the lines of the Johto being in disadvantageous trade deals with Kanto, as well as a mandatory agreement to provide military assistance to Kanto rather than the strict vassalage it was in ancient times. Kanto rarely, if ever meddled in Johto governance nor did they have the right to as those kinds of sovereign powers were lost long before as a consequence of time. Nonetheless Kanto maintained a superiority over the technologically inferior Johto.
Then the Kanto Civil War happened. Johto forces were instrumental in the war, particularly the Blackthorn Clan of Dragon Trainers. Lance in particular emerged as a war hero(kinda tragic now that you think about it. Him, Lorelei, Will, and others like them were all just young kids). The dilapidated Kanto League extended an invitation to him to the E4 and he accepted.
And with that the situation changed. A Johto trainer was now the strongest member of the Kanto League and de facto Champion in the absence of a real one. The Johto region was able to escape a lot of the destruction and violence because the majority of the war was fought on Kanto soil, and was able to leverage their relatively better economy and Lance’s position to break away from Kanto’s shadow and become truly independent. The political implications of Lance’s ascension to Kanto E4 was immense and no doubt both sides were aware of the consequences, but a struggling Kanto was willing to take the loss. Lance’s familial background and his idolisation by the Kanto populace for his deeds in the war served to stabilise the region.
This is why I admire Lance. Even when people say that he is not the strongest, you don’t realise even half of what this man has gone through. It's not his strength as a pokemon trainer that I respect the most (though I respect that as well), it's the sheer grit and willpower that was needed to shoulder all that political responsibility at such a young age.
Back to the topic of the Kanto League, Lance becomes part of the E4 and remains as such. Years later he was defeated and an official champion was crowned. Who? We don’t know. Yeah we really don’t know. What remains of the records only specify that the trainer was from Pallet Town(Yeah I know) and had a team that definitely contained an Alakazam, a Rhydon, and a Pidgeot. People also theorise a fully evolved starter but other that nothing is known about this person. Then this person was defeated by another who was crowned Champion, also from Pallet Town(Yeah I know . What is in their water?). This person is also mysterious and nothing is known about them other than that their team definitely contained a Pikachu(YEAH I KNOW), and all three Kanto starters. Then these two mysterious people promptly fucked off to who knows where. The Kanto League officials were really going through it. They were up to their wits end.
By that time, Lance had returned to Johto, as presumably the Kanto E4 had been disbanded as it was just a temporary stopgap in the aftermath of the civil war and the new Champion should’ve chosen their own E4, this time a real one. Only both eligible individuals promptly vanished into thin air lmao.
Lance, who had returned to Johto as both war hero and the one that had truly liberated Johto was crowned Johto Champion, his father having been temporary Champion as the Silver League also recovered(although they were in much better shape than Kanto, their Champion only having retired a few years after Lance became Kanto E4 and the subsequent interim term of the Blackthorn Patriarch remaining quite peaceful). He was in the process of creating his own E4 for Johto, with Bruno and Karen already chosen when the Kanto League approached the Johto League once again.
After much discussion, it was decided that the Johto Champion would take over the responsibilities for the Kanto League until an eligible candidate could be found. The plan was to at least have a full set of E4 on both sides but a common champion. A candidate that could defeat Lance would then inherit an actual E4 that could manage for him until they completed their search for their own or simply retain the inherited one. But Lance’s search for his own E4 would be interrupted by the criminal activities of Team Rocket who had slithered their way deep into Kanto during the war and he would form the G-men in response.
So for a long while Kanto and Johto were left with a common champion and an Elite 5 . This is why most Wooloogle articles give contradicting records of who were the Kanto-Johto Elite 4. In reality they only had a common champion and the Elite 4 were separate for both regions. Kanto was missing one member while Johto was missing two due to there being no prospective candidates and also because of Team Rocket activities keeping them all busy(For years you ask? Well, have you seen Team Rocket’s crime records? They’re an actual, honest to god mafia. Organised crime at an international level. And look at the Kanto Civil War they initiated! They are not like Team Aqua or Magma or Galactic or Plasma or Flare. Keep this in mind peeps). They all just filled in for each other when a Challenger appeared for their respective leagues. Mostly Will and Lorelei filled in for Johto while Bruno did for Kanto.
And also Lance wasn’t Kanto Champion(Here come the fanboys smh. For the love of Zacian and Zamazenta, before you say I’m wrong, look at the Kanto League records). He was always referred to as the interim Champion in every single document. It's just that he was acting Champion for so long that he became known as the actual Champion.
So coming back to the Grand Champion thing(sheesh can I go off tangent sorry guys), Champion Lance, after having seen Champion Ketchum’s victory over the undefeatable Champion Leon felt as if this was a good time to actually hand over Kanto and invited him to challenge the Elite 4. By that time Kouga had been added to the E4. The region finally had a proper Elite Four. Also Lance had resumed searching for his own E4 and had already scouted Jon Dickson, the Silver Conference winner from Sento Cherry Town and was in the process of scouting Indigo Conference winner Assunta for his own Johto Elite Four(A lot of people think Assunta is Kantonian, because they think her starter pokemon was a Bulbasaur. A common misconception as she had an Ivysaur when she was runner-up for the Indigo League and a Venasaur when she won it the next year, but she is actually Johtonese. She’s from Arborville in Johto, and people there really like Prof. Oak for some reason. So she travelled to Kanto to meet him and compete in the Indigo Conference. Her Venasaur is actually caught in the wild and her starter is actually her Venomoth!).
Back to the point, Lance felt as if the time was ideal for him to not be interim Champion anymore. And voila, Champion Ketchum won and was crowned as the actual Kanto Champion since the mysterious duo who booked it out of there after winning. In his E4, he retained Will, Lorelei, and Agatha but Kouga decided to retire from the E4 so that he can teach at Pokemon Ninja School??? And improve relations between Pokemon Ninja School and Pokemon Jujitsu Academy??? Like what??? (I really don’t know man…damn ninjas!). Pokemon Researcher Gary Oak took his position in the Kanto E4 at Champion Ketchum's request(Apparently they are childhood friends…what exactly do they feed these kids in Pallet?) Also Agatha!!! Can we give a round of applause for this woman please? She’s been E4 for decades. She’s been through five champions and is on her tenure with the sixth!!! Now that’s what I call Badass!!!
Ahem…So now with the crowns of Kanto, Orange Islands, Alola, and WCS on his fluffy head, Champion Ketchum now simultaneously holds a grand total of four freaking champion titles ! And the Pokemon League felt like they should honour that someway. And thus the title of Grand Champion was awarded to Champion Ash Ketchum, making him the first ever Grand Champion. Anyone else who will come to hold more than one Champion title in the future will also be known as Grand Champion. Idf there are multiple eligible candidates, they’ll have to battle it out. There were discussions about awarding Lance the title post-Kanto, but as he was only ever an interim Champion it never came to be. For the years he held both Galar and WCS crowns, Champion Leon would be recorded as having been a Grand Champion during that time.
{Yes. Champion Ketchum does have a tendency to win his titles by defeating long time undefeatable champions. It's kinda his thing I guess?}
Now what? The Battle Frontier?
Well it's like a Gym Challenge, but only for really strong, experienced trainers. You have to have placed really high in multiple regional conferences and other competitions to be even considered and trainers can only challenge the Frontier if they receive an invitation to a Frontier facility. The top level Frontier Brains(they’re the equivalent of Gym leaders) are even Champion level. It used to be that with each victory, the name and the location of the next facility will be revealed to the challenger. Even the Battle Dome was marketed as Contest Master Tucker’s battle show and only a select few knew that it was a Frontier Facility. All the facilities were a secret and challengers had to sign an NDA before embarking on the Frontier Journey. Now that the Battle Frontier has become televised we all know the battle facilities and their order. However their location still remains a secret except for the Battle Dome so trainers still have to sign those NDAs.
If you complete the Frontier, you get offered a Frontier Brain position. Champion Ash had completed the Kanto Frontier Challenge, beating the Pyramid King Brandon at freaking thirteen!!! Some people amiright? He only accepted a Frontier Brain position when he was 20 though, just months before he was invited by Lance in fact. One thing to note is that while the Battle Frontier is affiliated with the league, it is its own independent institution under the ownership of Enishida Inc.
Next, what exactly is Mikuri season?
Well the Hoenn region had a unique problem until five years back. The title of Champion just kept getting swapped between Champion Steven Stone and Champion Wallace with neither rhyme nor reason. People had to check Wooloogle if someone asked them who the current Champion was. So Hoenn found a unique solution. They would alternate between these two. So throughout the entire League cycle, until the closing ceremony of the Ever Grande Conference, the Hoenn Champion would be Steven Stone. From the opening ceremony of the Ever Grande Grand Festival that occurs immediately after the Conference, throughout the Pokemon Showcase season, and until the closing ceremony of the Orange Island Grand Prix, the Hoenn Champion would be Contest Master Wallace. The former’s turn is called Daigo Season with the Elite Four being Sidney, Phoebe, Glacia, and Drake as usual. The latter’s turn is called Mikuri Season with the Elite Four being Tyson, Harrison, Katie, and Lisia. It’s been an efficient system so far!

Isn’t it kinda crazy how many Pokemon Professors write papers that are somehow connected to the Champion? Like last issue had Prof. Birch’s paper on Alolan habitats and he used the Champion’s Alolan team as the sample. Before that it was Prof. Mohn’s paper on Ultra Beasts and the Naganandel turns out to be the Champion’s. In the same issue Prof. Gary Oak wrote a paper on Fossil pokemon differences and one of the pokemon he studied was the Champion’s Dracovish. At least 80% of Prof. Oak Sr's papers mention the Champion.

A conversation with the Contest Monster! Part 1!
Today’s guest at Pillar Personalities is none other than the three time Grand Festival Winning Top Coordinator, May of Petalburg City! Join us with Sinnoh Now’s Rhonda, as we take a peek into the little known details of May’s life as well as her rather fearsome reputation in the contest circuit.
(Video of the Pillar Personalities Interview as was written in Mentor. The Thumbnail of the video shows a smiling Rhonda and May as they sat opposite each other, a glass table with a tea set on it between them. The title of the video shows that this is only the first half of the one hour interview.)
As always, “On towards those Coronet Heights, with Sinnoh Now!”

[Video Description:
Hey guys, this video only has Hoennese and Sinnohvian subtitles so I’m gonna provide y’all a Unovan transcript here. Sorry I titled this video description but this is just the interview transcript and Poketube isn’t allowing me to edit for some reason :(
R: "Welcome to another episode of the Sinnoh Now's Exclusive Special, Pillar Personalities, where we meet some of the most successful people the regions have to offer. I am Rhonda from Sinnoh Now. Today with me you have three times Grand Festival winning top coordinator, May of Petalburg City!!!"
M: "Thank you. It's a pleasure to be here."
R: "So May tell me, how are you finding Sinnoh? Anything exciting to report?"
M: "Sinnoh is as delightful as ever. I've travelled through Sinnoh before during the year I took off and found it beautiful then as well, but there is something about going about the contest circuit that makes a region even more gorgeous to me. As for something exciting, I visited Canalave City and got to taste some delicious authentic Sinnoh dishes! It was absolutely amazing!
R: (chuckles) "It's nice to see that you're having fun and no doubt bombarding your followers with food suggestions that I'm sure that they'll appreciate. With how many videos you've uploaded lately, maybe we should make you the official ambassador for Sinnoh cuisine!"
M: (chuckles) "If it means that I'll get to eat even more great food be my guest. No complaints from me."
R: "We'll definitely be keeping that in mind! Note it down, Sinnoh Tourism Board! Now you've won your third Ribbon Cup, congratulations for that by the way. I know that you must be so tired of hearing this question over and over again but what do you plan to do now?"
M: "First of all, thank you. What do I plan to do? Well I have some seminars lined up in some Coordinating academies in Veilstone, Sunyshore, and Solaceon. So currently I'm focusing more on gathering material for these talks. Other than that I don't have much planned. I'll stick around Sinnoh some more, continue with my vlog and enjoy my downtime."
R: "Well no-one can say you don't deserve a break. Coming back to the Grand Festival, your appeal was absolutely gorgeous! I was mind blown and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. An orb of light surrounded by revolving glowing spheres imitating the solar system. Where did you get the idea and how did you achieve it? "
M: "The idea actually came from Sinnoh legends. I happened to visit an archaeological site which had these engravings of the adamant and lustrous orbs from Sinnoh legends on the stone relief. They appeared to be revolving around each other. I was struck by the image and never forgot it. So when I was preparing an appeal for the grand festival I knew I had to do something inspired from it.
As to how I went about achieving it, well, it was actually an exercise in control rather than power. The orb of light was a tightly controlled Fire Ball and planets were from Stone Edge believe it or not. It was truly exhausting, the process of manifesting Stone Edge as spheres and then settling them into orbits. But we're very grateful that all of that effort paid off and that you enjoyed our appeal!"
R: "Amazing! Absolutely amazing! After your appeal you blitzed though the battle rounds with remarkable flair as always. How did it feel to once again go head to head with one of your rivals, Zoey? "
M: "It was thrilling. Zoey is such a great coordinator and I've always held her in such high esteem. Her appeals and battle skills never fail to impress me. We met up after the finals at the banquet and we joked around like always and even made plans to meet up later. To have those special moments of a battle with a friend grinning on the other side, knowing that whatever the result we're both going to have great fun...it's just all around awesome!"
R: "Wow! I can see that you're both great friends! I did see that you uploaded a pic from the banquet of you and Zoey and it looked like you were both going to pass out from laughing. What happened there if I may ask?"
M: "Well (giggling)...sorry. Our friend Kenny, ummm... (soft laugh)...It's not a good joke at all but we couldn't stop laughing. He called our battle where I had brought out my Delcatty and Zoey her Purugly....um... A cat fight...(chortle)."
R: (short laughter) "I see... That must've been hilarious given the setting."
M: "It was. It was the after-festival banquet and Mr. Contesta was right next to us and Kenny just swanned in and said "Congratulations on your cat fight!" and then he saw Mr. Contesta and went so red we were worried."
(Laughter from Rhonda and the Crew)
R: "I also saw a picture of you accepting the Ribbon Cup from this year's presenter, Top Coordinator Robert of Silver Rock Isle. It was captioned 'Greatest moment of my life, to get the Ribbon Cup from his hands', Could you elaborate on this?"
M: "Robert was the winner of the Hoenn Grand Festival, the very first one I ever participated in. He beat Drew in the finals. Drew and I were, and still are rivals. But he was so much more experienced than me, so despite my annoyance at him and desire to beat him, I'd put him on a pedestal. So seeing Robert win against Drew was kinda jarring. But at the same, Robert provided me with the first ever concrete picture of how a top coordinator should be. His bond with Milotic and the trust they had in each other was awe-inspiring to witness. Seeing Robert gave me perspective...the prospect of being a top coordinator was not just this abstract idea anymore. If I were to aim to be one I had to become like him. Skill, power, knowledge.... All of these won't matter unless you know your Pokemon and nurture and grow the bond between you. So he was someone I've always admired and to win a Grand Festival and have him present me the Ribbon Cup...it was just amazing!"
R: "A dream come true huh?"
M: "Yes."
(Rhonda seems to contemplate something deeply. She then seems determined about doing something)
R: "Are you aware that you have a rather unconventional nickname in the contest circuit?"
M: "Hmmm? Is this about one of those ridiculous nicknames Harley keeps giving me?"
R: "No, nothing like that. Um... you're called a monster of a coordinator in contest circles. Are you aware of it and if so what do you think about it? "
(Rhonda seems to have the expression of someone who willingly bit a bullet and 100% okay with eating it)
(Silence. May has an unreadable expression on her face)
M:......(snort) "I was wondering if someone was going to ask me that. Yes. I do know that I'm called that and I kinda like it. That I'm skilled enough to be a monster at coordinating is something I can be honestly proud of. It wasn't always like that but now I'm all okay with it and weirdly enough I consider it something I earned through hard work. That my appeals are strong is indicative of my skill as well the skill of my Pokemon and that I have a tendency to win by knockout says that my Pokemon are strong enough to do so while still putting on a show. And if all our effort to attain that skill and power gave us the title of being monster then it's only fitting. You're the first person to ask me about this though."
R: "Well I'm glad you didn't take offence to that! (chuckle)
M: "Were you psyching yourself up to ask me that?"
R: "To tell the truth, yes. I was kinda worried for a second actually!"
M: "I'm not that intimidating. And besides, it's not my fault. It's my mentor's fault!"
R: ".........Mentor?"
M: "Yep! Totally his fault that I got saddled with Monster as a nickname."
(Rhonda' takes on a 'Jackpot' expression)
R: "Would you mind explaining? Can you tell us who this mentor you’ve mentioned is?"
M: "Of course. It's a long story so bear with me. I'm pretty sure everyone already knows this but I did not want to be a Pokemon trainer at all when I started out. Perhaps it was the pressure of being a great gym leader's daughter but I didn't like Pokemon or Pokemon battles. To me, setting off on my Pokemon journey was just an excuse to travel and visit all the restaurants I wanted to visit.
I met my mentor in what was then distressing circumstances but now just seem extremely hilarious. He was from Kanto and a Pokemon trainer aiming for the Hoenn League. It wasn't until I saw him in gym battles that I realised how talented he was. I mean... I thought he was good but not that good you know? I was a complete newbie, couldn't tell you what was up and down in Pokemon battling or Pokemon care. He took me under his wing basically. I still hadn't decided on being a Pokemon Coordinator then...didn't even know what that was... so the early days of my training were for the League. It's actually pretty evident when you look at Blaziken, who as my starter went through some intense Pokemon battling training under my mentor-"
R: "Sorry for interrupting but are you telling me that your Blaziken was initially trained as a League battle Pokemon?"
M: "Yes. As a Torchic he didn't get much training other than simple exercises but later as Combusken and then as Blaziken most of his battle experience came from sparring and training with my mentor's absurdly powerful league Pokemon.
Coming back to the topic of my mentee days, one thing I was always amazed by was his creativity. He was an extremely creative battler. His strategies were so insane and weird but they always worked. He was a gym leader's worst nightmare. You know when we say 'think outside the box'?....I don't think he even knew the box existed and his Pokemon didn't either.
(An extremely fond expression crosses May's face and Rhonda noted it down mentally)
So when I started participating in contests, for my appeals I took cues from his creative battling style. I used to ask for him suggestions and he used to give me ideas and his gym battles would inspire me. Back then I didn't realise that my unpredictable coordinating style was unusual or that there even were things like specific styles for coordinating. I just took whatever he taught me and tweaked it for contests. So in a way I didn't come up with the Petalburg style individually as much as I contributed to and refined it.
My battling style as well was somewhat the same. My Pokemon constantly trained with his Pokemon and all of them were Pokemon who cut their teeth on tough gym battles and all my battle experience came from that so-"
R: "Naturally your battling style, even though you were a coordinator, oriented itself that way and since it was your foundation, you can't completely shake it off even years later?"
M: "Exactly! You see it was his first attempt at mentoring as well....he didn't know what he was doing just like I didn't know what I was doing. Especially because he hadn't heard of contests either so he just taught me what he thought would be useful. So we were both learning as we went. It was a learning process for us both. It's actually quite visible when you look at how I was taught and how Dawn was taught-"
R: (startled) " Excuse me what? Taught Dawn? Are you telling me that both you and Dawn Berlitz were mentored by the same person?"
M: "Yes. After we went our separate ways, he went to Sinnoh and he met Dawn there under coincidentally enough, similar circumstances. Dawn wasn't a complete newbie like me. Her mother was a top coordinator and she attended coordinating schools and seminars with Zoey and Kenny. So she knew what to do but lacked practical experience. Our mentor with his experience with my coordinating career, was able to direct her much along the lines of contest battling than with me. So even with the same mentor, we have vastly different styles."
R: "So you met Dawn through your mentor?"
M: "Yes. He was the one who suggested Dawn go travel with me so that she can get more experience. In fact he actually has a habit of foisting his newer mentees onto me after their mentorship is over. Kinda like, this is my first disciple! Go bother her now?"
R: (chuckling) "So who else did you get saddled like this with?"
M: "Serena."
R: ......"Kalos Queen and Top Coordinator Serena? She was also mentored by the same person?"
M: "Yes. His experience with mentoring coordinators was very valuable when she was participating in Showcases and when she expressed an interest in contests, he called me up and asked me to take her on. That was the year I took a break from the circuit you see."
(Rhonda and the crew are now looking extremely bewildered and awestruck)
R: (in a disbelieving tone) "Anyone else?"
M: (with an amused grin) "Drew!"
R: Whaaaaaa-...(cough cough)...Now you're just having me on.... If you were the first mentee your mentor had then there is no way he mentored Drew of LaRousse City as he was already a well known coordinator by then. Right?"
M: (chuckle) "You're right. He didn't mentor Drew in coordinating.
(Sighs of relief from the crew. Most of them look like their world is imploding.)
M: He mentored him in showcases!"
(Rhonda's eye look like enormously saucers by now)
M: "You see, after getting acquainted with Serena through me, Drew became interested in showcases but he didn't act on that interest until his second Grand Festival victory in Kanto.
Despite being similar, showcases are different from Contests. In Contests it's the Pokemon that have to shine. The involvement of the coordinator in an appeal is not prohibited but only allowed as an accessory to the Pokemons' performance. In showcases, the involvement of the trainer is a must but here it's about complimenting each other. In contests nothing should overshadow the Pokemon while in showcases neither pokemon nor trainer should overshadow each other.
So Drew approached Serena for some coaching, but she hadn't mentored anyone before and wasn't feeling too confident about it. I told you before that our mentor was an unconventional trainer didn't I? One of the ways he trains his Pokemon is by being physically involved in their training. I kid you not, he asks his pokemon to attack him so he can gauge their level and strength. So because of his personal experience of involving himself in his Pokemons' routine and his experience with mentoring coordinators he was an excellent mentor for a Pokemon Performer. So Serena directed him to Drew and Drew actually knew that he mentored me and Dawn so he decided to give it a shot! He was mentored in the Orange Islands and what do you know? He became the very first Orange Islands Showcase King when they set up Showcases there!"
(Several beats of silence)
R: (slowly) "You're telling me that.... one single person mentored three top coordinators and one top coordinator into a Top level Pokemon Performer?"
M: "And a league champion! My brother was also mentored by him when he became a Pokemon trainer."
R: ....I see...
M: "You know, in hindsight it made sense that Drew won the Orange Islands Showcase Series. I mean our mentor did play a crucial role in establishing showcases there and raising it to the international prestige it now enjoys. Makes perfect sense that his mentee would win the first one."
R: (almost out of breath) "What do you mean he set up the prestigious Orange Island Showcase Grand Prix?"
M: "...Let's just say he's a figure of extreme political importance in the Orange Islands as well as Kanto as a whole."
R: ....."Who is this man?"
M: (with a very amused smile) "Oh! I didn't say his name?"
R: (catching onto the fact that May is enjoying this) "No...you didn't".
M: (grinning) "Oh! Well, he's Ash Ketchum!"
(Absolute silence)
R: (slowly) "Ash.... Ketchum?"
M: "Mhmm."
R: "Champion Ash Ketchum of Alola?"
M: "Yes."
R: "Reigning Grand Champion Ash Ketchum?"
M: (very amused) "Is there another Ash Ketchum I should know about?"
R: "Oh."
(The room was silent for several seconds, then..... pandemonium erupted as people lost their minds)
(Rhonda slumps onto her chair as if all strings were cut. Her crew is still going crazy in the background. May is grinning like a Meowth that got the cream, thoroughly enjoying the chaos.)
R: "I'm soooooo getting promoted."

Okay so I know y’all already know the monumental revelations that this interview unearthed(Kudos to Rhonda and Sinnoh Now, she’s definitely getting that promotion). It’s been three weeks and people are still talking about it. So I’ve decided to talk about it as well. Actually it’s been something that I’ve always wanted to talk about but never got around to, mainly because I didn’t know how to start and also I felt like I was missing a lot of facts. Now though this interview has shined some light on several things I found strange. So I feel like I can finally delve deep into this topic that my mutuals know I've kinda been obsessed with for a while now. Gear up for my ultra super special rant people!
So anyone who’s been on this blog for any amount of time knows that I’m a contest superfan. Even went to coordinating classes when I was a kid. I found my passion in analysis rather than participation however and has kept his blog to analyse pokemon contests as of seven years now.
Now one thing I’ve always found puzzling and talked about extensively on here is the Petalburg Contest Style. I’ve been following May since her contest debut in Slateport City and from the get go it was quite clear that she was not a “ Hoenn Coordinator ” when it came to contesting. Her style didn’t even have the slightest similarity to the Fluid Hoenn style of coordinating. In fact the only glimpses of an actual style you could see was the Kanto aggression style.
(Btw so grateful that Kanto reinstated contests after the war. For a while it looked like contests would not be even though gyms were reopened and the League reestablished the Indigo Conference, but luckily they did restart the Kanto contest circuit. Seriously guys check the circuit out both before and after the war. It’s not everyday you’ll see aggression of that intensity and some really metal ‘offence is the best defence’ kinda mentality in coordinating.)
Back to May, because her appeals and battles had this distinctive Kanto style tinge to it, I actually thought she was Half-Kantonian(because she looks too Hoennian to be full Kantonian) who was trying her luck in the well established Hoenn circuit cos the Kanto one was in the infancy stages of reinstatement. I was really surprised to hear that not only was she full Hoennian and the daughter of the Petalburg City gym leader, but also the fact that she was a complete novice when it came to contesting. In retrospect the fact that she was a novice was kinda obvious. I was just blindsided by her strange style and the fact that she made it past the appeals round. Why was making it to the quarter-finals impressive? Cos both Robert and Drew, elite coordinators and people who have been dominating the Johto and Hoenn contest circuits respectively, since debut were participating. Making it that far in such a situation is hella impressive! And the fact that it was her debut makes it doubly impressive!
Intrigued, I followed her career after that and more and more, I started seeing evidence of the Kanto style. But it was during her Kanto campaign that I realised I was wrong. I had for some reason, most likely debilitating boredom, despite having no interest in Pokemon battling, decided to watch the Indigo Conference that preceded the Grand Festival. And there I made a discovery, I was not seeing the echoes of the Kanto contesting style in her coordinating, I was seeing the looming shadow of the Kanto battling style.
May at the time had been weaving in her own style and inputs into her appeals and battles(Little did anyone know that it would evolve into its own distinctive style later on). However it wasn’t prominent enough to reach an equilibrium with the Kanto offence she had used since Hoenn. I predicted that the dissonance of Conference style battling methods and a Grand Festival arena might lead to disappointment. And I was right. Yes, Kanto is a region where coordinating and battling managed to bridge many differences, mainly due to both spheres having offence as the major aspect of their styles, but, battling is battling, and coordinating is coordinating. The overwhelming influence of an offensive battle style in a contest environment, against Soledad, top coordinator and Kanto native who is well familiar with both Kanto Conference battling and Kanto contest battling, lead to a semi-final loss for May. I believe this event is what prompted May to make her own style, one with a balance between offence and defence. This would of course lead to the much praised Petalburg style, where offence is still the name of the game, but flawlessly counterbalanced by the fluidity of Hoenn when the aggression seems to overshadow the presentation.
I, like any contest fan, knows this story. And I, like many others, were puzzled by how in the name of Groudon and Kyogre, did May started out with a bastardised Kanto battle style retrofitted for pokemon contests in the first place. Now we have the answer…her mentor was the friggin’ poster boy for Kanto pokemon trainers, the Grand Champion himself, Ash Ketchum.
Now that I have this information, several things make sense. I’ve gone back and analysed all of May’s contests videos in light of this revelation and I’ve made a list of all of my findings. To all those who say this is a publicity stunt and there is no way that these two knew each other, in spite of the mountains of evidence, including the shots of a young champion in every single audience of May’s contests, this is for you:
- Prioritisation of offence
Especially visible in Blaziken, May’s ace, who apparently got the battle pokemon bootcamp when it came to the Champion’s mentorship. Let's take the example of a move like Mega-Kick. In contests this move is mostly used as defence, mostly to bat away opponents moves and display your pokemon’s agility, elegance, footwork, coordination etc. The possibility of this being used as a direct attack is low. In May’s case, Blaziken’s Mega-Kick connects as a direct attack a staggering 60% of the time. This does not include when Blaziken bats away attacks with Mega-Kick and then follows through on the move and connects with the opponent. If that is accounted for, then it's 80%.
- The Lingering Influences of the Mentor
I noticed this only on my second run through. For those of you who don’t know, Champion Ash, along with May, participated in a post Grand Festival, independent contest held in Terracotta Town. The top two from the Appeals Round would then directly move onto the Battle Round and duke it out for the ribbon. It was May and Blaziken versus Champion Ketchum and Sceptile. I didn’t notice at first but then when I re-watched it, I realised that Blaziken and Sceptile moved and executed moves similarly. To this day, you can see the influence of Sceptile in Blaziken’s movements. This is also visible in May’s Wartortle. As many of you may know, the Champion has a Squirtle who currently acts as the Pokemon Chief of the Kanto Firefighting Brigade. If you look at Squirtle’s old gym battles in Kanto and the Indigo League performance, you can spot the similarities in training. When May’s Venasaur was a Bulbasaur, its moves and attacks resembled the Champion’s Bulbasaur to a T. This is also the case for May’s Beautifly whose movements and tactics are startlingly like the Champion’s Butterfree. I am not saying that May copied the Champion or all these pokemon are exactly like the other, but just that the influences of the Champion’s mentorship are clearly visible, if you look in the right places.
So there you have it. One of the things that had bothered me for ages finally got solved. And I can’t tell you how happy I was about it. I was not seeing things after all. It wasn’t a case of ‘I’ve connected the dots’, ‘You ain’t connect shit’ lmao. Anyway my mutuals can relax cos I won’t be bombarding them unnecessarily with this mystery anymore….kidding I will in fact be doing so thrice as much because it turns out that truth is stranger than fiction… THE GRAND CHAMPION MENTORED MY FAVE AND IT DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT! PEACE OUT BITCHES!!!

I was in the crowd during the Terracotta contest so I fully understand the Blaziken-Sceptile connection, and even the Wartortle and the Venusaur one but deadass did not know that the Champion has a Butterfree.

@whatdoesthevulpixsay
Wow! Did not know that…I’m just so used to the Champion’s OP pokemon that It’s kinda hard to imagine him as a newbie trainer with a small Caterpie like the rest of us. It's also hard to imagine a top coordonator like May being scared of Pokemon and needing a mentor. Excellent analysis @cosinflationgetit. It's so impressive that you caught these details so long ago.

@whatdoesthevulpixsay I’m impressed like you but I’m also kinda horrified. Imagine having to wait for years to have a mystery solved. It would be like an itch you can’t reach…for years . @cosinflationgetit OP I hope your sanity is still intact

Today Tracey and I will be joined by my grandson as we take a look at how the Butterfree are doing. We’ll also be discussing some serious topics, including poaching, particularly of Bug Pokemon

I’ll admit that I came here just to catch glimpses of the Champion’s pokemon. I’m just a regular dude who likes to watch pokemon battles. I never thought much about Bug pokemon before and to be honest knew next to nothing about them. This vlog has just opened my eyes. I didn’t even know Bug Pokemon were the most trafficked across regions. And to learn that most of the poaching is for their wings and shells for luxury goods of all things made me throw up a little. I have decided to contribute to the Bug Pokemon sanctuary run by E4 Aaron. Thank you Prof. Oak for shining light on this subject

So I've been waiting for this my whole life. Last year Ash made a bet with me that he can go an entire year without his favourite noodles and today just weeks before the new year he succumbed to temptation and I received a photo from Brock that’s pretty much him shovelling noodles into his facehole like some ravenous beast. Thus he has lost the bet and I’m free to enlighten the world with these pictures that I had painstakingly collected for this one moment.
World, say hello to Ashley…
Photo1
A young Ash is wearing a beautiful orange dress and a blonde wig with a pink bow on top
Photo2 (Technically Juliet not Ashley lol)
Ash is wearing a pink blouse and white pants and a wig of red hair
Photo3
The champion is in an entire maid outfit
Photo4
Ash is wearing a beautiful Blue dress with pink bows, and a pink wig with yellow ribbons on both sides above the ears.
Photo5
The Champion is wearing an Alolan Nurse Joy uniform with a blonde wig.
Enjoy World!!!!!
