Work Text:
There’s an upcoming festival in the Northeastern region and many townsfolk are setting up their stalls. During such busy periods, there’s usually an uptick in crime and other incidents. One of the duties of being the territorial lord is to survey the area and ensure all is well, but Basen has fallen ill with the seasonal flu.
In his stead, Cale and Choi Han are walking around, receiving greetings from the friendly residents. Despite his smiling face and relaxed posture, Choi Han has a hand on his scabbard, ready for any incoming threat as he keeps a careful lookout on their surroundings. He has guarded Cale for many years now, and there is no guard Cale would trust more with his life. However…
It comes to Cale’s attention suddenly, the way Choi Han always stays one step behind him.
Cale frowns.
“Choi Han.”
“Yes, Cale-nim?” Choi Han’s reply is immediate. His eyes shift to Cale in an instant, giving Cale his full attention. He looks like a knight awaiting orders from his liege.
“Why are you always walking behind me?”
“As a show of respect, Cale-nim. I am your guard,” Choi Han answers simply. The dissatisfaction on Cale’s face is clear as day, however, so Choi Han follows up, asking, “Is there anything wrong with it?”
“Yes.”
Choi Han blinks. He hesitates. Then, he asks, “Then, what should I do?”
“You should be by my side.”
“But… Cale-nim. The difference in our positions—”
“I don’t care about that. Besides, you’re not just my guard. You’re also my…” Cale’s mouth stalls, as though embarrassed. He doesn’t continue, but Choi Han has thankfully gotten the point.
“I understand, Cale-nim,” Choi Han replies gently. He falls into step beside Cale. “I will always be by your side from now on.”
Choi Han’s smile is warmer than the sun overhead, and Cale likes seeing it next to him.
