Chapter 1: Brothers love

Chapter Text

Patton loved his little brother because he was the sweetest person in the whole wide world. He liked stories about dragon-witches (not dragons or witches, he made that very clear), the colour red, and most of all, he liked his big brother.

Everyday when Patton came home from school, his little brother would be waiting at the door, ready to scream his name as he toddled over for a cuddle. Then they would get dressed in their matching cat onesies and have a banana and jam sandwich while they watched Cinderella. They both knew the words off by heart but Roman would cry if he didn’t get his daily dose of Prince Charming, so even though he was bored of the movie, Patton never complained.

They were two peas in a pod. Whenever he saw one of them, the other wasn’t far behind. It was hard for Patton to explain to his friends why he spent so much time with his brother, which led to him not having many at all. He didn’t mind too much, because whenever he cried, his tears were wiped away and his shaking hands were held as Roman burst into song. His baby brother loved to sing.

“A deam is a wish you heart make, when you fast sleeping.”  He would hum as he drew his latest daydream. He was only four, so he didn’t know how to speak properly yet.

“In deams you lose you heatshakes, whateve’ you wish fo’, you keep.” He would whisper against his brother's chest, curling up to go to sleep. He almost always snuck into Patton's bed, but it was okay because even though Roman snored, he was also very nice to cuddle.

“Have fath in you deams and soon day you wainbow will come smilin’ through.” He would call out as he jumped around the living room with a scarf in his hands, claiming to be a ballerina.

But strangely, Roman never sang the rest of the song. Instead, he would just start all over again, never once losing his smile. It was the one trait that all of the Miller’s seemed to share: their smile. Everyone knew them for their bright smiles, which made sense as their aunt was a dentist.

“You must always brush and floss. I don’t think people will recognize you if you aren’t showing off your ridiculously shiny teeth.” She would always say whenever they went to visit. Patton had to stay behind and be lectured about dental hygiene while Roman would get to giggle and run off because he was too little to understand.

Roman was quite noticeable. He was loud, clumsy, and had the attention span of a goldfish, but it was okay because he was also incredible at cheering people up. Wherever he went, he had adults and children alike clinging to every sound that came out of his mouth. Patton wasn’t jealous, because he was even more impressed than everyone else.

Sometimes, he wasn’t sure why they were so close. Patton preferred to sit outside and make up stories in his head while his little brother was always laughing, singing, drawing. Roman stood tall and proud, and the other hunched over to try and hide his stomach. Patton hid in the background while Roman always stood in the spotlight.

They loved each other despite being so different. Patton always played make-believe to entertain and Roman always sang to comfort.

Then one day, their house turned silent. There were no more giggles, no more smiles, no more cuddles, and definitely
