Anatawa Hitorijanai (You are not alone)

Summary:

Mikey was used to the praise and admiration that was always in his father’s eyes when talking about his eldest sons and he was even used to the disappointment that laced his voice when talking to his youngest about another failed grade. Until he stopped being used to it, that is.

Or, Your typical Mikey human au depressed fic.

(There will be no brother bashing in this fanfic. That's not the reason he has depression.)

Chapter 1: The calm before the storm

Notes:

Hello, this is future me writing *looks at calendar* about 10 months after posting this first chapter. No beta read since the beginning and I was an inexperienced writer when I wrote the first chapter so there were things I needed to fix and I finally decided to do it now, including changing chapter 2's title.

The changes aren't big enough that they effect the plot in any way. Mostly just grammatical errors, making my writing clearer to what I wanted to say, and putting paragraph breaks where I think there should have been breaks.

If you are a new reader this won't affect you in any way but welcome. I'm glad you could join us.

Well anyways, on to the Mikey angst (which is my favorite type of angst.)

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

It was a beautiful Monday morning in New York City. The sun was shining brightly, and the birds were chirping away, not a care in the world. The cars were honking and you could hear the rustle and bustle of people going to work and school. What lies in the middle of it all is a medium-sized house in a neighborhood with a few scratches and hinges missing from the rough housing that inevitably took place. A frisbee being lost and abandoned on the curve of the rooftop. A basketball court beside the house and a ball laying beaten in the grass from so many uses. There lies a porch with a creaky doorstep that the owner of the house meant to fix, but alas something always seemed to distract him.

Or someone.

CRASH

“Watch it, Mikey!!” The resident hot head of the group exclaimed.

“Guys, it’s 7 in the morning. It’s way too early for this.” The genius exclaimed, who hasn't had his signature cup of coffee, yet.

“Hey, It’s not my fault! Me and Raph were just having a little disagreement and I may or may not have accidentally bumped into a lamp.” Mikey said, trying and failing to justify his actions to his older genius brother. While also smiling and rubbing his head guiltily.

“A little disagreement? Mikey, I told you that it was your turn to take out the trash and you refused.” Raph said with a huff, crossing his arms.

Mikey was currently standing in the living room in front of the flat screen tv, with his back hunched over and his iconic freckles and blond, curly hair was wearing his favorite pizza orange shirt and his eldest brother’s tan colored khakis that got handed down to him.

While his temper inclined brother, Raph, was standing behind the couch, with his arms folded looking anything but pleased. He has dyed red hair and he is wearing a sleeveless red shirt and dark jeans with his favorite red kitten socks that Mikey gifted to him for Christmas last year.

Donnie was standing with his brown auburn hair. He is wearing a white pi t-shirt matched with lighter jeans. He was currently standing between the living room and the kitchen debating if he should just let them settle this themselves so he could get some coffee and Mikey’s famous pancakes that he already cooked earlier this morning. His brothers have already had breakfast, but he was still asleep because he je just had to stay up all night working on a project for his robotics club.

“Well I can’t help it that I find trash takeout boring. I’m only human.” Mikey said with a slight whine in his voice. He was 15 so whining was inevitable.

“Seriously? I leave you guys alone for a few minutes and you are already bickering.” All eyes turned to the owner of that calm, cool voice immediately.

Leo walked into the living room with an authority tone in his voice he seemed to be born with. He has jet black hair that almost looks blue. He is wearing a Space heroes t-shirt with Captain Ryan on the front paired with dark blue khakis and he already has his Nike tennis shoes on, ready to leave.

“Mikey won’t take out the trash. He was supposed to do it last night after dinner, but he didn’t.” Raph said with a clear annoyed tone. Mike just stood there staring at Raph while looking offended.

“Way to snitch, Raphael.” He said annunciating his older brother’s name just to annoy him before turning to Leo once again, “I was going to do it, but I just got distracted.”

“Mikey, you know we all have chores in this house and we all have to do them.” Leo said while softening his face. He has always had a soft spot for the youngest Hamato.

“Yeah, Yeah I know. I’ll do it now.” Mikey said while walking into the kitchen to get the overloaded trash that was still left in the trash can.

“Okay but hurry. We still have to get to school.” Leo said while going over to where the lamp shards were and picking them up carefully. Raph was bending down to help his older twin while Donnie walked in the direction of the kitchen to finally get coffee and yummy pancakes before they had to leave for school.

“I can’t believe I got stuck with this stupid chore.” Mikey said while mumbling all the way outside to the trash bin. Mikey was the youngest out of 3 brothers. It can be rough, but he loves his family. His dad worked most of the time because he owns the biggest martial arts dojo in New York. Hamato Yoshi was a famous martial arts master back in Japan for the Hamato clan, but he gave it all up to move to New York when his wife, and the mother of his kids, died.

Mikey doesn't really know what happened neither does his brothers. His dad just says it was a freak accident and leaves it at that. Since Mikey was only 3 months old he doesn't remember anything about her. Leo and Raph were 3 when she died and Donnie was 2 so they just have bits and pieces in their memory of her. But their dad does talk about her sometimes. Like how she was a free-spirit and always had a smile on her face.

Her name was Sunny Russo, but she took the last name Hamato when Yoshi and her got married. She grew up in Italy but left for a reason Mikey and his brothers didn’t know and there she met Yoshi.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Their dad always said that she named them after famous Italian painters because she was a painter herself and she wanted them to have a piece of their Italian heritage. Mikey is really the only one that looks Italian and he also has some Japanese features as well. He has always taken pride in that, but he sees how his father looks at him sometimes when Mikey is just laughing or has a thoughtful expression on his face.

Sometimes it’s a face of pure sadness and sometimes his face almost looks angry. Mikey has always wondered if the anger was directed at him or his mom.

He guesses he will never know.

Notes:

This is my very first time writing fanfiction. Sorry if this isn’t good. Construction criticism is very much appreciated but please be nice about it.
