The One that Portal’d Away

Summary:

In Ch48 of The Foolish Human Meant for Me, if SOS didn’t block Vergil, he would’ve gone into the portal but left the Yamato along with his coat and boots (and ascot) in WaiFu’s world. There would still be a big chance that he’d come back to her world to get his things, especially his katana. So that one would still be a safe what-if that’s still bound to have a happy ending.

But… what if in Ch47, WaiFu didn’t wake up on time and Vergil just left without saying goodbye?

A special what-if entry in the series. Consider this a separate, alternate universe where Vergil3 was more foolish than the human meant for him.

Proper Summary:
Vergil simps likes you, but he thinks you already belong to someone else. So he leaves quietly, only to find out that for you, he is... *looks at the title*

Notes:

Disclaimer: Don’t own the songs and videos. But these songs in the chapter titles, especially Tsundergil’s (Ch1), kept bugging me to write this one. This would’ve been the salty or the bitter entry in Tsundergil’s Bento Box but this somehow became a three-part special and it features Vergil3c (because Vergil3b is the one in MMIP-II by HotBiohazard) so I’ve decided to put it as a separate fic.

Chapter 1: I Will Always Love You

Summary:

Boyce Avenue version, sung by Tsundergil:

If I should stay
I would only be in your way
So I'll go but I know
I'll think of you every step of the way

Bittersweet memories –
That is all I'm taking with me
So goodbye
Please don't cry
We both know I'm not what you need

I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you've dreamed of
And I'm wishing you joy and happiness
But above all this, I wish you love

And I... will always love you
Foolish human, I will always love you

Chapter Text

Vergil didn’t know what you had been planning, but since he had sensed that you had fallen asleep in the kitchen, he couldn’t stand letting you be. That was why he came out of his room, carried you to your bed and was intending to clean up the snacks you had prepared on the dining table. It seemed like you had been planning to stay up all night, but you had fallen asleep, probably from tiredness. This foolish human...

He really couldn’t leave you unwatched for you would certainly resort to unhealthy food, with all those potato chips and chocolate chip cookies he’d seen on the table. Judging from the used cup he’d found, it seemed you had taken in at least a cup of coffee, although it didn’t seem to work. Perhaps, like how hot cocoa would make you sleepy, too much sugar had brought you the same effect. It somehow made Vergil smile, but not without the annoying pinch in his chest. He wanted to keep taking care of you like what he had been doing, but…

After tucking you in your blankets, he went to the door. He wanted to gaze at your peacefully sleeping figure a little longer, he wanted to brush your hair away from your face, but he knew he shouldn’t be doing those things anymore. He shouldn’t even be in your room. He shouldn’t be in this apartment, in this world… He no longer had a place in here and his presence might only inconvenience you. Though, if he were to be honest as per his Rule Number 1, it just hurt to still be in here. You were only a room away, one courageous yet foolish hug away, but no matter how he closed the distance, your heart already belonged to someone else. He had failed to obtain the human meant for him, but he still wished for you to be happy so he intended to respect your relationship with Earl.

And for the first time in his life, it seemed that luck was on his side for what he had been wishing for was granted immediately. While he was tidying up the kitchen, a portal opened behind him, from which came out his twin, along with their older versions and Smaller Older Sister. From the way that the apartment was dimly lit and the way he just stared blankly at the two Dantes who were bickering, his older self had figured out everything. It was the older man who scolded the two and even threw them back into the portal that was left open. Smaller Older Sister must have been sensing it too, that something was off about Vergil, for she seemed worried. But he couldn’t look at her straight for he could see you in her and it only squeezed his chest even tighter.

“Let me get my things,” he said before heading to his room. It only took a minute or so before he was ready to go back to his world.

But Smaller Older Sister must have recognized her own apartment, so she had figured out that this was indeed a world where there was another version of her… that Vergil had entered a wrong portal to the version of her meant for him… and that he was giving you up. “Aren’t you going to say goodbye to her, at least?” she asked, gesturing to the door of your room.

Vergil spared her a glance when he shook his head, hoping that the older couple would understand his choice. Smaller Older Sister looked to her Vergil, as if asking the older man to do something. But he just wrapped an arm around her, kissed the top of her head and whispered, “They are a different version of us, my love.”

Vergil heard a whimper when Smaller Older Sister hugged her husband, so he went ahead to the portal. He couldn’t watch nor listen to her cry because he could imagine it to be the same reaction you would have once you woke up and found him gone. But it would be for your own good. He told himself once more that he was doing this for you, so you would be free to be with the man you had chosen... so you could be without your obnoxious roommate who only ever wished for you to be his, but had miserably failed to earn you.

Although, as he was entering the portal, he heard Smaller Older Sister say to the older Vergil, “But you came back to me after two days. Maybe he’ll come back to her too?”
