Work Text:

Jenny stared into the fire, sitting comfortably on the chaise with a book in her hand. She felt warm, something to be expected when you lived with a lizard woman. A frown stretched across her face, her life was turned around completely when she met Vastra. She had a family now, a best friend, a lover, and a wife. Vastra meant the world to her and she was happy and grateful for her everyday. She couldn't help but wonder if her family could ever be happy for her. She often felt ashamed being related to them but over time maybe they missed her. Would her parents ever love her or would they remain ashamed because she loved women?

Vastra was a woman , a beautiful one with green scales, but she was so loving, gentle, and caring. Jenny imagined that if she had any resemblance to a normal family, Vastra would have gone through human customs asking the parents for permission for her hand. That thought brought a small smile to Jenny. Vastra would have been nervous, she would have acted brave though. If her parents truly cared, they would have accepted it too. Jenny let out a sigh, it was a nice thought to have. More than likely her family was miserable and they would hate her more for being happy. They would probably think of it as selfish, living in a nice home, not having to knick things.

Jenny was brought out of her musings when she felt a hand on her shoulder. Jenny leaned against Vastra after she sat down, relaxing in the embrace of her lover.

“ My love, what was on your mind?”

“ I was just thinking of my parents. I feel guilty sometimes, living like I belong in a wealthy society. I don’t think I'm too selfish. We help all kinds of people and I try to help the irregulars off the street. I wish things would have been more normal. I wish you could have met them, I wish they could have the opportunity to accept you.” A small tear ran down Jenny’s cheek.

Jenny looked at Vastra as she felt her cooler thumb wipe away the tear. “ My love, you should never feel guilty for being happy. You have made a choice, my heart, you have chosen a difficult path and have allowed yourself to feel happiness. People like your parents, may never truly be happy and that's not your fault. You are the most generous, caring, and loving person I have ever met. Your parents have brought on their own misery and I am sorry they never loved you like they should have. We cannot save everyone from themselves my dear, but we can certainly live for them. Live to be better, to be more kind in this world. Live to see the changes of what kindness and love can do to shae this world and the people around us.”

Jenny smiled and wiped away the tears, “ I love you. “

Vastra smiled and kissed her temple, “ I love you more than anything on this planet.”

Jenny laughed, “ Now you're just saying nice things because you are my wife.”

Vastra rested her forehead against hers, “ Yes that is true. I am not to blame for having the greatest wife on this planet.”

“ So what you're saying, is there could be another woman on another planet?”

Vastra rolled her eyes , “ We can sit here and discuss this or perhaps go upstairs and rest? I did get a new article on Robert Koch’s theory of bacteria.”

Jenny watched as Vastra stood up and extended her hand towards her and Jenny took it smiling.
