When Science and Myth Collide!

Summary:

How had things gone wrong so quickly?

One minute he was playing with some wild Rattata and Spearow, the next he was fighting off a group of poachers looking to make money from a mythical pokemon.

With all his strength gone from escaping his captors, Ash must now place his safety in the hands of a family of Oddish and a pokemon professor who despite having the goal of documenting every species of pokemon in the world, isn't the slightest bit interested in studying him.

I haven't actually seriously written in years, my latest work was a work built on hyperfixation and whims. This one is also built on hyperfixation and whims but I actually put more effort into stringing together a cohesive plot. In the interest of improvement, I am open to receiving criticism on how I write, all I ask if that if you do critique please like, actually critique and don't just go "Wow you're such a noob writer, this sucks I'm gonna go and read an actually good pokemon fic adios loser" That is immature and helps nobody.

Big thanks to members of the COAL discord for encouraging me to try and write again

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

A pink blur crashed down into the forest floor, narrowly missing a pack of Oddish who were resting.

Offended at what they perceived as an attack, the Oddish prepared to counter with stun spore but before they could the dust settled and they got a clear view of what the pink blur was.

They were small, smaller than Oddish, the majority of their fur was pink but the Oddish could see that the tip of their tail along with their paws were a light blue and sideway light blue lightning marks adorned its cheeks.

They were curled up on their tail, eyes shut tight, clearly in pain from the bruises around their body and the purple on their face showing clear signs of toxic poisoning. To top it all off, a strange device was on their neck which sparked as they softly whimpered.

“What pokemon is this?”

“I’m not sure, any ideas Bella?”

“No clue either, it’s definitely not from the forest though, I’d recognize a pokemon this distinct.”

As the Oddish discussed the strange pokemon, the youngest Oddish, Lilac, frowned at the device and fired a weak razor leaf to try and slice it off the poor pokemon.

The attack bounced off the metal and the Oddish all jumped as the pokemon loudly cried out as the device’s sparking increased in power to become full on electrocution from the razor leaf, mercifully, the power returned to its previous state after a few tense seconds and the pokemon slumped on the grass, out cold.

“Lilac!”

“I’m sorry! You know I don’t like seeing pokemon in pain!”

“So you just attack the strange blinking device? Big help that was!”

“Enough” the eldest, Bella silenced her bickering siblings. “Tunia, Lilac didn’t know the device would react like that so stop blaming your sister. She was just trying to help and while she didn’t help out this poor pokemon’s plight we at least got its species name.”

“There’s something familiar about the name Mew,” Lilac commented.

“Yeah I think I’ve heard it somewhere too though I can’t remember where,” Tunia added. “Well regardless of what Mew is, they look a little too roughed up for berries to be enough. Do you think there’s any Chansey nearby?”

“I remember last week there was a lady with pink hair who had a Chansey, I think she was called Nurse Joy,” Bella recalled how patient the woman was, despite so many of the pokemon she treated hissing at her and even threatening to attack as she approached them to help, either due to their own personal pride or a distrust towards people, she carried on and stubbornly healed their wounds with some help from her Chansey.

The siblings unanimously agreed that Nurse Joy was probably the best option for the unknown pokemon.

Due to their lack of limbs to carry the injured Mew around, coupled with the fact they don’t actually know where to find Nurse Joy, Lilac stayed behind to watch over Mew in case their condition changed or something came to attack it while Bella and Tunia set out to find Nurse Joy.

————————————

An hour passed and Bella and Tunia weren’t close to finding someone to help their dilemma.

There’s a high chance they could’ve made solid progress in finding a Nurse if they didn’t get side tracked from running away from some trainers who wanted to catch Bella for her rare coloration.

Bella wasn’t opposed to being captured and spending her days with a trainer eventually but today was not the day to look for a trainer who wanted her for reasons other than being shiny.

Tunia was rather irritated by the forced detour but didn’t voice his complaints since it wasn’t his sister’s fault humans wanted her for her rare color.

The sun was starting to set so Bella was considering calling it a day on their search as it wouldn’t do for them to be away from their home when the Gastlies and Misdreavus came out to play. Before she could ask  Tunia if he too thought it was getting too late to continue their search, a yellow cicada-like pokemon moved in with lightning fast speed and struck them both with dual wingbeat causing the siblings to go flying in opposite directions.

Tunia was out cold from the super effective move while Bella was barely hanging on to consciousness.

The cicada-like pokemon flew over to her. “Don’t take this personally kid, my trainer loves pokemon like you.”

“Oh I wonder why” Bella glared, she already had a feeling what they meant by pokemon like her.

If her attempt to intimidate the bug type was noticed, he made no indication of it as he flew over to some nearby trees where a man emerged with another cicada-like pokemon next to him but this pokemon was light brown and grey to the first one’s yellow and black. A red and yellow band was wrapped around their forehead and a halo floated above them making Bella hope against all hope that the halo meant it was a good natured pokemon who would be against forcing a poor Oddish who doesn’t want a trainer as of the moment.

The man pulled out a net that was quickly thrown over her and from the cicada-like pokemons’ lack of reactions to it, Bella let go of the hope of them having a moral compass.

He adjusted his gloves and went over to pick up the net containing Bella, before he could, bright flames shot towards him forcing him to jump back to evade.

The cicada-like pokemon moved to his side in an instant as an orange draconic pokemon descended from above and stood protectively in front of Bella. Her eyes widened as she realized her savior was none other than a Charizard, a rare dragon like pokemon that was the final evolution of Charmanders given to new trainers.

“You lot aren’t welcome here,” The Charizard spoke gruffly as he stood on his full height and held his claws out to emphasize his point. “Catching pokemon is fine but putting them in nets to capture them against their will is too far.”

For a while, the two bug types stared down the faux dragon and after a tense silence, the man clicked his tongue and pulled out two pokeballs.

“Ninjask, Shedinja, return” the two returned to their balls with little fuss and the man walked away, grumbling something under his breath.

Once the man was out of sight, Charizard’s claws glowed white and cut the net that ensnared Bella. The flame pokemon helped pull Bella out of the destroyed net upon seeing she was struggling to crawl out and carried her over to her brother who was slowly regaining consciousness.

“Bella…? What..” Tunia’s voice slurred, still reeling from the sudden super effective attack.

“He should see a nurse,” the Charizard remarked before lowering his back to the two siblings. “Hop on, I can take you to my trainer and he can get Nurse Joy to give him a checkup.”

The name caused Bella to perk up. “You know where to find Nurse Joy?”

Charizard nodded.

Bella tipped her head to the direction of where Lilac and Mew were waiting. “Over that direction, my sister is over there with an injured pokemon. I won't sugarcoat it, they're not doing well, after taking Tunia to your trainer could you take them too?”

“So long as you can point me to where to fly then, yes,” Charizard beat his wings and took flight, Bella hoped he wasn't mistaken over his trainer being able to get both Tunia and Mew medical attention.

—————————

Lilac was worried.

Her siblings hadn’t returned yet and she could see some Misdreavus in the area, despite having some experience in battle, Lilac would be far too weak to defend herself and Mew from any ghost pokemon if they chose to attack. The fickle nature of ghosts meant they could attack unprompted for nothing other than a silly game they found amusing so the passive route would only get Lilac so far.

Perhaps Mew would be helpful in fending off ghosts if they were fairy type since they would have an even matchup with ghosts, unlike Lilac whose poison attacks were not very effective but then again if the unconscious pokemon was fairy then they would be doomed to Gastly.

It was concerning how quiet Mew was. They were still alive, Lilac checked, but they remained deathly still from the massive shock that occured from Lilac's attack on the sparking device.

She had tried to coax the pokemon awake with sweet scent but when that didn’t work, she contemplated shaking the pokemon but it occurred to her that shaking an unconscious and heavily battered pokemon definitely was not the right move, especially with that ominous metal band around their neck, so despite the sight disturbing her, she steeled herself to ignore it and to go and collect berries and leave them in two neat piles next to Mew so they could have something to eat when they woke up.

After she made piles of oran and pecha berries, Lilac didn’t have much else to do other than wait. She would love to try and find some of her friends in the forest to enlist their help but with how bad Mew’s condition was she couldn’t afford to go out on a trip to get help, she would have to just wait it out.

A shadow loomed over her and she looked up at the source to see a Charizard. She nearly shrieked in fear at the sight but her fear vanished at the sight of her sister, Bella on the Charizard’s back, clearly unharmed and calling out for her.

Once the Charizard landed and the two were at eye level, Bella gave Lilac a brief summary of her and Tunia’s trip to find Nurse Joy, including the part about the man with the Ninjask and Shedinja. While they were talking, Charizard gently picked Mew up, his brow furrowed in a look of concern.

In the interest of keeping the injured pokemon in the best position possible, Bella and Lilac hopped onto Charizard’s back so Mew could be held in Charizard’s arms. It would be more ideal for a Charizard's arms to be free when flying but Mew's lack of consciousness along with the Oddish siblings' lack of arms or vines to hold onto them meant it would be safer for Charizard to keep them cradled in his arms until they made it to Nurse Joy.

—————————

Ash couldn’t see.

His eyes were squeezed tight from the toxic that Skuntank had sprayed in them earlier, every attempt he made to open them led to searing pain from the poison still being in his system.

Faintly, he could hear voices around him, it was hard to tell what they were saying from the pain he was in, courtesy of toxic poison and the metal band around his neck, but he could hear them saying “Mew”.

No one should know what his species is, his mom always told him that because of them living in the tree of beginning for almost their entire lives pokemon never got to learn about their species since they were the only Mew in existence. The only ways for someone to know his species were from ancient records or if they heard him speaking.

Deciding he had to know how they knew what his species was, he used psychic despite knowing what would happen to him for using that move, to try and see what was around him and potentially look into their minds. He managed a brief glimpse around him before his view was cut off by the metal electrocuting him, all he managed to see in the room was two humans, a Charizard and a Chansey.

Panic started to set in, he had used all the energy he had left from his teleport earlier and now somehow he was in a foreign place, surrounded by humans. Did his teleport fail? Teleport was always the move he could never get right no matter how much he was coached on it so did his long distance teleport not get him as far as he thought he did from that last ditch attempt?

He winced as the metal kept sparking on his neck, sapping away the energy he had gained from sleeping. Refusing to submit to the electrocution, he raised his paws to his neck in order to try and rip the metal off with strength, his paws didn't get to make contact with band as one of the two humans had grabbed his paws before he could reach it.

He responded to the action with thunderbolt.
