where did the party go

Summary:

based on the prompt “We’re both aro/ace and keep meeting and making small talk at these stupid college parties when everyone else is smashed and making out. Wanna come back to my dorm and play a board game or something?”

Notes:

I changed a few things but it's primarily the same as the prompt

title taken from fob's song of the same name

Work Text:

Yoongi was unsure of why he even bothered to attend college parties anymore. He was in his fourth and final year and Yoongi would have thought he'd have stopped attending parties by now - they weren't exactly his scene and he knew that - yet here he was once again, stood in the kitchen alone regretting his life decisions.

Hoseok was off in the front room, dancing (or so Yoongi suspected from the chants of his name. He wasn't too keen on finding out whether or not he was right - the last time he'd ventured into the front room to see what Hoseok had been doing, he'd spotted him doing body shots off of anyone who volunteered and Yoongi had walked away feeling scarred for life) and Namjoon was probably sucking face with Seokjin. It wasn't unusual to find them making out - Seokjin's visits to campus were rare now that he had a full time job so he and Namjoon didn't hesitate to make up all for all their lost time, whether that be cute dates to the campus coffee shop or heavy make out sessions on Hoseok and Namjoon's sofa. Yoongi had developed a tendency to stay clear of the pairs apartment whenever Seokjin was visiting, after one to many accidental walk ins.

All Yoongi wanted to do was to go home and curl up in bed. Maybe watch a film, grab himself a hot chocolate. The alcohol in his hand was bitter in his mouth as he swallowed it and he shuddered as he downed the last of his drink.

He was debating on whether or not to leave the party when the door to the kitchen swung open, two students running in dragging a third behind them.

"Come on Jungkook, I promise we won't abandon you this time." The taller of the first two students, a boy with faded lavender hair, pouted at the boy they'd pulled along. "You can come and dance with us."

"And have you two end up grinding on me after you've had one to many drinks?" The boy grabbed an unopened can of cider from the side and smiled at them both. "No thanks, hyung. I know you mean well, but I'll be fine here."

"If you're sure," The shorter of the first two frowned, exchanging a glance with his taller friend.

"I'm sure, Jimin. Go have fun with Tae," The boy said, smiling and shooing them off into the other room.

Yoongi wasn't the only person in the kitchen - there were others at the opposite side chatting over a bowl of (spiked) fruit punch - but he was stood closest to the group and he didn't miss the way the boy sighed, shoulders dropping after his friends left. He was tall, taller than Yoongi, with dark black hair and piercings lining his ears.

It wasn't like Yoongi meant to stare, but he found he couldn't help himself, curious. It had been a while since he'd met anyone else who actively wanted to chill out in the kitchen.

The boy looked up and caught Yoongi's eye and offered him a small smile. Yoongi smiled back, and paused before putting down his empty cup and reaching for a bottle on the counter to fill it again.

"Not one for partying?" Yoongi asked the boy, gesturing in the direction that his friends had left as he picked his cup back up and stepped a bit closer.

"It's not really my scene," The boy said and Yoongi had to agree.

"It isn't mine either," Yoongi said with a quiet laugh. "Yet somehow I'm always dragged into coming along."

The boy nodded his head in agreement before speaking up again. "I'm Jungkook," he said.

Yoongi introduced himself and Jungkook looked surprised. "Hoseok-hyung's friend Yoongi?" He asked.

"You know Hoseok?" Yoongi asked, but then again, who didn't. Hoseok was a social butterfly and it was common for him to spark up a conversation no matter where he was with whoever he was with. It was how he'd met Yoongi - Yoongi was washing his hands in the toilets just before class and suddenly Hoseok was beside him asking if he knew where the music building was, whether he'd been there before and if so did he know what this teacher was like? An hour later, they'd walked out of the lecture - it turned out they were in the same class - and Hoseok had invited him to lunch with his roommate.

"Wait, Hoseok talks about me?"

"Hoseok-hyung led my dance class this year." Jungkook looked down, biting at his lip before adding, "And he's mentioned you a couple of times."

"Yeah?" Yoongi said, taking a sip of his drink. "What did he say?"

"Well," Jungkook cleared his throat and shuffled his feet and Yoongi raised his eyebrows at the change in demeanour. "He mentioned you to me when he asked me if I had anyone special in my life and I told him that I was ace."

"You're ace?" Yoongi asked and Jungkook nodded his head slowly.

"Ace and aromantic," Jungkook said, fiddling with the ring pull on his can. "Hobi-hyung was like "hey! That's cool! I have a friend who is ace"."

"Huh," Yoongi said with a nod of his head. "That explains why you're hiding in the kitchen too then."

Jungkook let out a laugh and nodded, seeming a little more confident in himself. "Yeah, I guess. Being around too much pda makes me a little uncomfortable."

"I get you," Yoongi said. "I'm the same."

They stood for a little longer talking until Yoongi noticed his cup was almost empty and looked at his watch. It was almost midnight and the party was still in full swing.

"Hey," He said to Jungkook, who looked over at him in interest. "Do you wanna get out of here? You could come back to my place and we could, I don't know, play a board game or some shit instead of standing here for the rest of the night." There was no better way to determine someone's character than a furious game of scrabble.

Jungkook laughed. "I'm really competitive are you sure you want to play a board game? I'd probably win."

"You wanna bet?" Yoongi raised an eyebrow, finishing what was left in his cup before putting it down on the side.

"You're on," Jungkook grinned at Yoongi, putting down his can and gesturing for Yoongi to lead the way.
