“I’m sorry. WHAT… did you say?” Red eyes narrowed.
The demon, currently surrounded by flames, balked a bit at the icy tone thrown his way. Perhaps even the great Lucifer was embarrassed by the situation before him. After all, who can stand in the way of such a powerful entity? “I said, once again, I cannot determine that for you.”
Koizumi Akako, dressed in her dark robes and beads, slammed her fists down on the table. A soft noise of frustration escaped her throat. She could scream, but that wasn’t very ladylike. “You’ve never had trouble with telling me Kuroba’s future before. Why now, for the past full year!?”
“It’s the demon of light.” Akako frowned. She’d heard that name constantly comes up in her dealings with Kuroba Kaito and Kaitou KID. From what she could tell, it was a name referred to one of the many detectives chasing after the phantom thief. “Now that they’re so focused on each other, they’re making SUCH a disruptive energy.”
Painted lips frowned. “The demon of light is so focused on catching KID, you can’t get through?”
Lucifer sighed. “No, you misunderstand. They’re playing that game mortals play with each other. Lust, love, chasing, pining, all those horrible things. They want each other, but won’t give in to each other.
Akako’s eye twitched. Was Lucifer implying those two wanted each other so bad, they were magically cock blocking her!? No, that’s not possible. Kuroba was pining for Aoko. When did he switch targets?
“Enough. I’ll see what this is about myself.” With a wave, the room went dark.
~~~
Kaitou KID held up a gem to a moon. No Pandora. So, the search begins again. But the cycle was not complete.
“Not the gem you’re looking for, thief?” A detective, winded from running up the stairs, sharp eyes locked onto his target, body ready to spring.
KID smiled, turning to his favorite critic. “Alas not.”
“Then come over here and hand it over. Then we can leave the roof, with you in cuffs.”
The thief in white laughed softly. “Why detective, why don’t we save that for bed play?”
Shinichi just smirked, readying a soccer ball from his belt. KID responded in kind, pulling out his card gun. “No thanks. I prefer playing out here in the open. Why don’t we dance a little, criminal?”
Akako looked on at this whole proceeding from her broom. Oh my goddess, these two were hopeless. The love! The flirting! The sexual tension you cut with a knife! What powers did one or both of these idiots have that allowed them to interfere with the Great Lucifer in such a fashion? And unconsciously too.
This foolishness had to stop. Kaito would listen to her sometimes when she warned him before a heist in high school. Perhaps he’d be willing to listen one more time.
~~~
Kuroba Kaito wasn’t hard to find these cold winter days, even though high school is over and the class all went their separate ways. He goes where it’s warm and there’s food. Really, Akako thought, the man is like some sort of stray cat.
Bundled up in her puffy coat, the door of the cafe making a tiny chime as she opened the door. Ruby eyes scanned the crowd until she found the familiar messy hair. She hadn’t seen him since they left school, mainly because he really didn’t like her. Honestly, at this point, she’d given up trying to spell him. Why hit a brick wall over and over? He’d probably be an annoying pet anyways.
Said magician was nose deep in his laptop, a slice of cake and some sort of hot drink steaming next to him. Surely doing homework for whatever college course he was taking and not planning more heists in a public place.
Akako walked up to him, her heeled boots tapping away at the floor. She slipped into the seat across from him, a graceful predator cornering said stray cat.
A glance was flicked up her direction for a brief second, before returning back to their task. “Isn’t it rude to sit down at a table when you’re not invited?”
Like he’s one to talk about rudeness, the insufferable little thing.
“Normally, I wouldn’t bother with you.” The witch knew the whole mean girl ‘I want you to know you’re nothing to me now’ attitude wouldn’t work with Kaito, but old school habits die hard. “But I’m trying to do magic and you are meddling.”
A dismissive eye roll was the only response she got.
Okay, fine. He wants to be blunt? Akako will be blunt. “Your feelings are blocking my magic. You and that detective are just circling each other causing some sort of aura, which is messing everything up.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I went to your most recent heist, thief. I could cut the sexual tension in the air with a knife.” Red lips smirked. “You two are just absolutely dying to get your hands on each other.”
Silence. Another snub.
“Are you really content to just pine and let your feelings fester and rot?”
Kaito slammed his laptop shut, making Akako jump a bit at the sudden swift movement. In a flourish, he slid his drink and cake piece up onto the top of the computer, using it like a tray, gathering up his things. “Stop bothering me and mind your own business.” Blue eyes glared down at her. “If you do it again, I’m causing a scene and getting you kicked out.” With that, he wandered over to another table, his back to her, and settled back down.
She definitely didn’t want the negative attention. The conversation was over, with nothing gained. At all.
~~~
Back at home, the red witch was fuming. At this rate, she’ll never get full use of her magic back. Damn that Kaito, damn that detective!
Akako flopped onto her couch, head propped up on one arm as she sulked. There had to be a solution to this problem, she just needed to come at it from a different angle. Appealing to Kaito obviously won’t work, he hates her.
Could she talk to the demon of light? Oh yeah, that would go over really well. A complete stranger coming up to you and saying ‘hey, you know that famous thief Kaitou KID? Admit your love for him! Why? No reason’. He’d probably give her colder looks than Kaito does.
Charms might work. Perhaps charm them to admit their feelings to each other? No, no. Once it wears off, they could go back to blissfully ignoring each other again. At least one of them has to do this legit.
With a sign, Akako gazed out the window, looking over the bare trees. Outside, was a white stray cat. Not surprising, there were many feral cats around her house. She liked feeding them, and having them around to keep the pests down.
The white cat was settled in the little pet houses she’d made for them when it was the cold of winter. She didn’t like them suffering, so this was her way of helping them.
A cheeky little crow bounced around the house, kicking a bit of snow in the air. It snuck up, yanked at the fur of the poor cat. With a flap, it dodged as the cat swiped at it. Undeterred, the bird continued to pester at the fluffy creature.
The cat, fully over whatever the crow was doing, just chose to ignore it.
A slow smile spread across Akako’s face. This gave her inspiration.
Life was good for Shinichi.
While he went to college for Criminal Justice, he worked part time at the police department. Inspector Meguire insisted he start right away, offering him a full position. It was a nice offer, however, Shinichi definitely wanted the credentials behind him as well, hence the college courses. Crossing all the ‘t’s, dotting all the ‘i’s as they say.
Currently, being a junior officer, the young detective shared an office with inspector Takagi and inspector Sato. Whoops, make that the double inspectors Takagis. He needs to remember that they’re married now, finally. Sometimes, it could be a little awkward sharing with them, as they could be a little handsy behind his back. Ah, well. It was cute. He’d been rooting for them when he was Conan, so he was ecstatic when things worked out.
Shinichi was flipping through some case files at the desk as Inspector Takagi Wataru wandered in.
“Here you are, Kudo-kun.” A cup of coffee, set in a take out cup was set in front of him.
The young man nodded at him, picking it up. “Coffee delivery’s a little late today, isn’t it?”
Takagi nodded in agreement. “There was a new delivery lady today. Said poor Hina-chan is sick, but she’ll be back tomorrow.”
“Ah, that’s a shame. Hope she gets better soon.”
As Shinichi lifted the cup to his lips, a sigil on the bottom of the cup started to glow, working magic into the coffee, and down into the unsuspecting detective as he drank down the hot liquid. He noticed that he felt perhaps a little more warm than usual, but chalked it up to just the coffee being too hot.
The sigil slowly disappeared from the cup.
It wasn’t long before another heist was announced. On one hand, Kaito was getting a little frustrated over this Pandora situation. Was this bloody gem even real, or was he chasing some crazy crime lord’s pipe dream? He didn’t want to believe the latter, as that would mean his father died over something an idiot made up. Maybe he should switch his goal and work a little harder to get the jokers arrested. They keep squirming out of his traps before the police get there, like the little roaches they are.
The one bright shining thing about doing a heist though? Playing with his favorite detective. It was always a pleasure to compete with a man he considered his only intellectual equal. He loved Shinichi walking around, raking those sharp eyes of his over every person. That sixth sense homing into him.
So…. what is this….?
Shinichi looked… bored. Like he didn’t want to be there.
Kaito, dressed up as one of Nakamori’s men, looked around the room. Was there someone here Shinichi didn’t like? Was he pretending? Perhaps a way to make him lower his guard? Either way, he should be on his toes.
He wasn’t the only one who noticed Shinichi’s change in attitude. Saguru Hakuba, his old classmate, and another one of Shinichi’s partners at the police office, was standing next to them. Thankfully, Kaito was close enough to lean into the conversation.
“Kudo-kun. Are you alright?” The blonde half brit tilted his head. “You don’t seem yourself.”
A soft sigh escaped Shinichi. “We’re not in the theft department. So we’re wasting our time here.”
Hakuba looked just as surprised as Kaito felt. Wasting time? “I thought you loved attending KID heists. He invites you personally, every time.”
Shinichi gave a small shrug. “I’m over it. I want to focus my attention on real detective work, rather than this idiot who wastes the polices’ time. He doesn’t even keep his targets.”
A frown creased over Kaito’s lips. This has to be a trick. Look at his detective, trying to distract him with such talk. I bet he and Hakuba were laughing about this plan in the car before coming here. Yes, that’s it.
Show time.
The target this time was a beautiful cloudy ruby, with little emeralds set around it in a ring called the Frosted Holly. A little cut to the lights, a dramatic entrance, and the races were off. It didn’t take much effort to ditch the officers that immediately went after him.
It didn’t take long for KID to be on the roof of the building, gem in hard, face tilted up towards that glowing moon. With no glowing gem. Damn.
“Are you done?”
A grin split across KID’s face. Ah, there he is. With a twirl of his cape, he spun to look at the detective standing on the roof, fully expecting a soccer ball or dart aimed at him, or that smug smile of Shinichi’s.
…But Shinichi just had his hands in his pockets, looking at him like one would look at someone casually on the street.
“Why, detective, aren’t you-”
“I said, are you done?” Shinichi interrupted, holding out his hand for the gem. The look was so cold, KID thought he would freeze into a block of ice on the spot.
No, no. It’s still a trick somehow.
“Of course I am.” KID flicked the ring to the young man.
Shinichi caught it in mid-air, looked it over to make sure it wasn’t a fake, then nodded, turned on his heel and started towards the door. KID blinked. “No threats of arrests? Soccer balls aimed at my poor head?”
“No, I want this night over as fast as possible, so I can go back home to sleep.” Shinichi didn’t even bother to glance back or slow his pace towards the roof exit. “I’ve got a lot of work tomorrow.”
A dramatic hand was thrown up to his forehead. “Oh, how painful! The great detective has ditched me for his cases! I thought I was the Lupin to your Sherlock, the chocolate to your milk, the-”
“Do me a favor.” Shinichi had stopped at the door, looking back at him. “Don’t invite me again. This is my last heist and dealing with you.” The door opened with a metallic creak. “Have a nice life. Hope you get arrested.” And with that frosty statement, he was gone, slamming the door behind him.
Leaving one very confused phantom thief.
~~~
A week later, and another heist in the bag thanks to a challenge from old man Suzuki, Shinichi was true to his word. He didn’t show up at all. Nakamori even grumbled about fancy detective boys who think they’re better than anyone else.
Kaito had even sent an invitation to Shinichi’s home. When he checked after the heist, it’d been torn up and thrown in the trash, not even taken out of the fancy envelope it’d been sealed in. He’d even made sure to write him the best riddle he could come up with.
He sat alone in a park, his butt sulkily parked in a swing on the playground, kicking lightly at the snow that was starting to pile up again.
Was his detective bored of him? That quickly? That easily? A pain settled deep into the magician’s chest. It was his worst fear. Shinichi had seen behind the curtain too many times, and now no longer was interested. He started to shiver, both from the cold inside and out.
“Coo.”
Kumi, one of his doves, settled down on his shoulder. With a squirm of feathers, she squeezed her way into his scarf. A birdy head popped out, nuzzling against his cheek. She continued to coo, comfortingly.
Bless her little heart, she could tell her owner was distressed and trying to calm him. Doves really are something. Kaito ran his fingers over the feathers on her neck, giving her little scritches.
Kaito continued to pet her, deep in thought. Perhaps his detective just got frustrated with him. Too much chasing, no reward. It’s why they tell you not to always play with cats with a laser pointer. One robs them of the thrill of catching and killing their prey (or toys).
Yes! That’s it. No more detective chasing the thief. It’s time for him to go on the offensive this time. He’ll win him back!
~~~
As someone so new and young in the force, Shinichi wasn’t given a gun yet. That suited him just fine though. There was a reason he played soccer. Run those criminals down, pound them with a ball. Being Conan had given him plenty of perspective on how to get at someone much larger than him.
It was inevitable that he found himself with Takagki at a murder scene. It was easy to solve, but the murderers decided not to go quietly. They split, one running off down the street, the other fleeing into a nearby building.
“Kudo! Go after the one in the building! I’ll get the other!” Takagi tucked away his notebook and took off down the street.
Shinichi nodded and darted into the building. Thankfully, a running criminal catches people’s attention. People helpfully pointed in the direction the man went flying. Unfortunately, he turned a corner to a hallway with no criminal in sight.
With a whole lot of doors.
There was no way the guy got down to the end of the hall, so he must have ducked into a room to hide. With a scowl, Shinichi started opening doors, peering in, examining rooms when he could.
Shinichi opened a door and was a bit startled at the scene before him.
The room had dimmed lights with lit candles all around, casting a warm, romantic glow over the whole thing. Rose petals had been scattered all over the floor, leading a path from the door over to the bed situated in the room. On the bed? One white phantom thief, stretched out sexily on his side, propped up on his elbow. In his mouth was a lovely stemmed rose.
“Oh, great detective!” KID pulled the rose from his mouth, twirling it suggestively over his chest.
Said detective was entirely unamused.
“You’re found me in a compromising-”
Shinichi didn’t have time for his nonsense. He immediately turned and slammed the door behind him as he left. He had a more important criminal to catch.
~~~
Stifling a yawn, Shinichi shuffled the paperwork given to him by various police officers. They gave him all the dirty jobs, like sorting cases, cleaning up, fetching coffee. It was fine with him though. He knew his talent and he’d be rising through the ranks once he finished college anyways.
For now, he’ll spend late nights like this one, putting away files.
He wandered back to his shared office, nudging the door open with a toe. He bumped the door fully open as his arms were full of folders. His intention was to dump them all on his desk first, then sort. However, he was stopped dead in his tracks.
Kaitou KID was stretched across his desk, waiting for him. He was in a classic pin-up girl pose, right out of a magazine. “Oh, great detective! I have a case I need solved for me.”
Said great detective stared at him, frowning. Was KID being serious?
“Someone has stolen-” KID threw a dramatic hand to his forehead, feigning a swoon. “-my heart-!”
Absolute dead silence followed.
Shinichi stared at KID. KID stared back at Shinichi. Neither spoke or moved for a few long seconds.
“I think I’ll work in Hakuba’s office.” The detective turned and walked out, kicking the door shut angrily behind him.
~~~
Shinichi was getting to the end of his rope. He was SO SICK of Kaitou KID!
Roses everywhere in his house. Coffee ready made in his kitchen when he wakes up for classes. New mystery novels showing up in the library. Doves delivering riddles, love notes, various cute little trinkets. It had been going on for weeks and it was driving him up the damned wall. No matter the cold shoulder he gave the criminal, he came back harder, with more things to give him, more flirting.
Time to tell this damned thief off. Maybe he’ll get the hint if Shinichi slams a ball straight into his smug face.
Right on time, the next night, a dove tapped at his bedroom window. The detective opened the window, letting her fly in.
The dove fluttered in, making herself comfortable on Shinichi’s pillow. She’d done this many times before, so he assumed it was the same dove coming to visit him.
It wasn’t the dove’s fault her master was such a stalker. “Come here, that’s a good bird.” Shinichi scooped her up, untying the note around her leg. He had no interest, so he simply tossed the thing aside, making a face.
Paper, pencil, and Shinichi was writing his own note back. ‘Meet me on the roof of the Tokyo Grand Hotel at 10pm tonight’. He tied it up around the dove’s leg. “Alright, you glutton.” He chuckled, giving her a few sunflower seeds. “Back to your idiot.”
Soon, this will be over.
~~~
Bundled up in his coat, the detective made his way up to the roof of the hotel. Thankfully, these days he could just show his badge and the staff just steps aside for him. Way better sneaking around as a child.
The night air outside was crisp, the lights and noise from the city could be heard even this high up. The moon was showing a split smile, much like the phantom thief himself.
“Great detective, good to see you.”
Of course, KID was crouched up on the door to the roof. He looked like some snowy gargoyle up there, cape whipping up behind him. He rolled up to standing, jumping gracefully down next to Shinichi.
KID was elated. His detective, calling him out? All sorts of confessions on the rooftop ran through his mind. The man swooning into his arms. Yes, that’s what will surely happen!
….Except Shinichi is glaring at him, arms crossed. “You need to stop.”
“Stop? You didn’t like all my gifts for you?” What person wouldn’t like roses? His cute little doves!
“Absolutely. I’m tired of your harassment.. I want you away from me, and out of my life!”
KID was taken aback. Harassment? He thought it was stalking? “You can’t see what I’ve been trying to do?!” Was the detective really this thick!?
“All I can see is you’re obsessed with me. What are you getting out of this, KID? Getting your kicks following me around and making me miserable? I thought you were better than that.”
Coldness washed over KID again. The poker face was gone. The cocky smile. Just lips drawn up in a grimace of frustration. He couldn’t take it anymore. It was either break down and cry or scream.
The thief grabbed onto Shinichi’s coat lapels tightly, not letting him get away when he tried to rock backwards. “You… moron! Idiot!”
Shinichi managed to wiggle through his grip, getting his back pressed against the wall next to the roof door. He shivered, both from the cold concrete seeping through the jacket and the pure hot anger that radiated off of KID.
“I’m in love with you, you damned nosy detective!!”
Something felt like it snapped in Shinichi’s chest. He’d felt like his chest had been almost… cold. Like a shard of ice had speared through him, freezing his breath and heart in place. Now, fire exploded through him, straight up his body and to his cheeks, which burned a bright red.
“You… you do?”
“YES!” And with that, KID pressed in tightly, kissing the detective deeply. Normally, Kaito is a ‘consent is key’ type of person, but he was so strung out, so desperate, he couldn’t help himself. At this point, a ball to the face, a punch, some sort of pain was going to come his way.
Imagine his surprise when not only Shinichi kissed back but grabbed onto his shoulders like he was afraid KID would dissipate into the dark like the phantom he is.
KID wanted to stop, to catch his breath and talk things out, but his core lit up like the sun. Heat flooded through his veins like lava, streaking both to his heart, and down between his legs. It was too late to back away now.
Thankfully, Shinichi seemed to agree. He pressed closer, insisting KID part his lips with his tongue. Soon, they were in the throws of a heated make out session. The snow silenced the sounds of the city and all that he could hear were their panting breaths and the wet sounds of their mouths together.
The detective finally pulled away, the need for air in his lungs dragging him away from the lip lock with a gasp. “You stupid thief. At least take me on a date first. What kind of gentleman are you?” The words had a sarcastic bite but no coldness at all behind them. Spring had come to Shinichi’s heart.
A goofy grin slid itself over KID’s face. “My sincerest apologies, great detective. I hope you’ll continue to forgive me. Now that I’ve caught you, I have no intentions of letting you go.” With that, a sneaky gloved hand groped his partner’s front, finding he was just as hard as he was.
Shinichi let out a gasp, pressing his crotch into KID’s hand. He shoved the hand away, whirling around and gripping at the wall, shivering. The magician thought maybe he went too far, until Shinichi looked back at him over his shoulder, bright red from his neck to his ears. By the gods, it was adorable. “We can’t…. We’re in public. What if we’re seen…?”
No way in hell he was stopping now.
KID pressed up to Shinichi’s back, pressing a solid line together. “Relax. No one knows we’re up here together. Tonight, there is no audience.”
Deft gloved hands were already at work. One wormed its way into the jacket, unbuttoning it and stroking over the black turtleneck covered chest under it. The other dived down into his pants and underwear, stroking the hard member.
Shinichi arched a bit, but shivered harder, more from cold than pleasure judging by the goosebumps on his skin. Hrm, it was rather cold out, wasn’t it? He better make this quick. This was only the first of many times, he hoped.
He continued on, stroking his detective. Soon, he was squirming, making the cutest little whimpers. Gods, he couldn’t take it anymore. “Detective.” He nibbled on his ear. “Touch me too.” He pulled Shinichi back, so they were standing back straight again.
Turning, Shinichi kissed him deeply again, hand going straight to KID’s pants. “No traps will set off if I get in there, will it?”
“Nope, gentleman's promise.”
Happy with the answer, the detective unbuckled KID’s belt, pulling him out of his pants and started teasing him, stroking the shaft and lightly stroking his fingers over the head. The magician rewarded him with a happy groan, picking up the pace on Shinichi’s body. It didn’t take long for him to arch, releasing into the glove. The sight and feel of it sent KID over the edge as well, climaxing into the hand stroking him off.
They both slowly slumped to the ground, overwhelmed with sensations. Of course, it was freezing, so they couldn’t stay there for very long.
“Idiot. I said a date first.” Shinichi pinched KID’s cheek and with a fluid motion, pulled off KID’s monocle and hat. “Now escort me home so we can get warm. Or is Kuroba Kaito just as much of a cad as KID is?”
Kaito grinned. Of course he knew who he was. That was his detective. “Of course. I hope you have hot cocoa in that manor of yours.”
~~~
It’s the oldest law of human nature. You chase what you cannot have. You pursue what is yanked away from you, like a cat with a string toy. It couldn’t have worked better, in Akako’s opinion.
But, did it clear whatever nonsense was clogging the magical channels?
“Well?”
Lucifer peered down at the witch, who was staring up at him, crossed. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, like he was inhaling the scent of the mortal air all around him.
“Yes, the aura is gone. There’s nothing interfering with me now.”
Akako burst into a wide grin. Thank the goddess, now she can get back to her own business. Seriously, all this drama just because those idiots couldn’t bring themselves to talk to each other.
A long huff escaped red lips. “Men are stupid.”
