A Piece of My Heart

Summary:

Ben recalls his most treasured gift.

Notes:

Thanks to my friend Andrew (AllBlackAirForces) for the idea.

Work Text:

There weren’t many things in the Galaxy that Ben Solo treasured. Expect, maybe his beloved ship, the Millennium Falcon. Of course, he loved his wife, Aria, and three kids: Breha, Han, and Eris. When it came to his ship, well, that was different.

The Falcon had once belonged to his father, the famed smuggler Han Solo, and Ben had known from an early age it would be his. And hopefully, one day, it would be his children’s. In the meantime, Ben made sure he kept up with the maintenance of the old ship, making sure it ran just as good as the day his father won it from his Uncle Lando.

“The place sure is dirty,” Breha stated matter-of-factly as they stood in the engine room.

“Well, that’s what happens when you have a ship this old,” Ben told his daughter as he adjusted a screw.

“How old is the Falcon, anyway?” asked Han.

     “I dunno,” Ben said.

“Older than you?” said his son.

Ben chuckled. “Older than your grandpa. This used to be his ship.”

“Is that how come you gotta fix it so much?” Breha asked. “Cause it old?”

Ben chuckled as he tightened a screw. “Yeah, old things have to be fixed a lot.”

“Did grandpa teach you how to fix ships?” asked Han.

Ben nodded, a sad smile on his face. “Yeah, he did.”

Fifteen Years Ago:

     “What a piece of junk.”

Princess Leia’s jaw dropped upon hearing the words that just came out of her son’s mouth. “Ben Solo! That is not how you thank your father for his gift.”

“But it is,” Ben protested. “It looks like it can’t even fly.”

“Maybe not now, but with the right tools, you can get her up and running in no time,” Han, his father, said.

“But I don’t have any tools,” countered Ben.

“Look in the side storage compartment,” his father told him.

Ben opened the hatch. Inside was a full set of tools, everything he would need to fix the ship.

“You got everything you’ll ever need to keep this thing in working order,” his father said. “Maybe even the Falcon, one day.”

He made a face, unsure of what to think of the idea. While he was probably one of the few of his friends that knew how to fly a ship, he didn’t know the first thing about fixing one.

Han patted his son’s back. “It’ll be a piece of cake. Your Uncle Chewie and I can help you get this up and running in no time. Whata ya say, kiddo?”

Ben had to admit, it did sound like fun to fix the beat up ship up with his dad. The two of them both shared a love of flying and fixing things. It was in his blood. Plus, he loved the idea of doing it with his dad. Heck, he always enjoyed doing anything with his dad. He knew it would be fun.

“Alright,” agreed Ben. “Let’s do it.”

Present Day:

In little to no time, the engine of the Falcon was up and running. The three of them headed back up to the main area of the ship where Aria and Eris were.

     “All fixed?” Aria asked.

“Yup,” Han said. “Daddy got it fixed really fast. He’s the best mechanic in the whole Galaxy.”

Aria smiled and hugged her husband. “Yes, he is.”

Ben gave her a kiss. “What can I say? I learned from the best.”

His wife smiled at him, understanding the hint of sadness in his voice. She knew it was bittersweet for her husband to have inherited the Falcon, yet he took pride in the hunk of junk. She knew that it was the last bit of his father he had, and he treasured it. And that one day, he’d pass it on to one of their kids. She hugged him. “Yes, you did.”
