Amethyst kept a smile on for Steven and Connie's sake. She didn't want them to feel bad, especially not after Stevonnie dealt with Jasper when she was unable to. Not when they'd protected her from being shattered (if Jasper was even capable of such a thing).
However, she couldn't fight off the feeling of inferiority that came with their accomplishment, and this led to a bit of a depression spiral.
They were kids. Connie wasn't even a gem! She had thousands of years of experience that they couldn't even begin to imagine. Yet, they were able to beat Jasper in a fight that she immediately got bodied in.
When Garnet and Pearl eventually returned and Connie went home to her parents, it was Garnet who immediately caught onto the fact that something was wrong. Maybe she saw a future where Amethyst was upset. Maybe it was just because she'd always been particularly observant of such things. It didn't matter either way, though. The result was the same.
"What happened?" Garnet asked once she was sure Steven and Pearl were both out of earshot. She knew that Amethyst wasn't the type to want everyone to know when something was wrong (clearly, considering she'd been doing her best to mask her mood since she re-formed).
"We got into a bit of a fight with Jasper" she said. Garnet began to worry about the future consequences of that but quickly shoved the thought away. It could wait. "I got poofed and... Stevonnie beat her"
"You're upset because they didn't need you during the fight" Garnet spoke the words that Amethyst herself couldn't utter. The smaller gem nodded. "On the contrary, they might have just panicked if you weren't there with them. You're their elder and your presence, poofed or not, provides moral support"
"I guess" Amethyst shrugged. "I just wish I could be better"
"You're alright as you are" Garnet replied. The two sat in silence for a moment before the taller gem spoke up again. "Would a sandwich cheer you up?"
"I'm not sure anything will cheer me up" Amethyst replied. "Everything in my head is just... Flat now, if that makes sense"
"Do you want a sandwich anyway?"
"Oh, obviously yes"
