The Manor had a pond large enough for skating. Well, it probably wasn’t really large enough for the Wayne version of skating, which was heavy on body checks. Like a hockey scrimmage with occasional sit-spins.
After her third tumble, Stephanie took a break, clomping over to the bench with its blankets and thermoses. She only sat alone for a moment before Cass came off the ice, unfairly graceful in making the transition to land. Steph smiled out of habit, just at the sight of Cass, cold and windblown and happy. She smiled wider when Cass sat close, appropriating half Steph’s blanket. “How did you learn this?” Cass asked.
“First time, I was invited to an ice skating party in third grade,” Steph said, letting Cass steal her drink for a sip. “It was fun. We learned how to do crossovers -- like for corners? -- and I was the fastest to pick it up. It’d be nice to know more, though. The jumps and things.”
“I like it,” Cass decided. “It is fast and fun. We should learn more, just us.”
“Yeah, okay,” Steph said, threading her gloved hand through Cass’s, and together they watched Bruce careen into three people at once.
