Work Text:

It's not a terrible decision.

It's not a terrible decision.

It's not a terrible-

"It's not a terrible decision Obito, relax." His husband says calmly from over where he's sitting on the bed. Obito checks out his reflection in the mirror again, smoothing out the creases in his flak vest. Kakashi sighs and walks over to him, placing his arms around him.

"You know they're going to love you. Stop spiraling please." He says kindly, nuzzling his face into Obito's neck. Obito frowns, running his fingers over the scars on his face and suddenly wishing he hadn't even applied for the job, "I don't know." He murmurs, feeling uncharacteristically self conscious. Kakashi pulls his hands away from his face and brings them to his mouth, gently pressing his lips to Obito's fingers. "I do. You're going to make a wonderful teacher, better than anyone else," he whispers, smiling at Obito.

Obito can't reciprocate the optimism, but having Kakashi's vote of confidence always feels good. He never sugarcoats anything with Obito and while it's often frustrating, he appreciates it at times like these.

"Okay, you need to get out of the bathroom now, you've been in here for like an hour." Kakashi complains, shoving him out of the door. Obito shoves him back before leaving to go to the kitchen to start on breakfast.

He's not in the mood for his usual heavy breakfast and opts to make miso soup and reheat some leftover rice from the previous night. Kakashi comes out in ten minutes, freshly showered and clad in his ANBU uniform. "You have a mission today?" Obito asks, confused.

Kakashi shrugs, bending slightly to open the fridge door, "Just some briefings and meetings, nothing important. I promise I'll be back before you're home."

Obito smiles, relieved. He did not want Kakashi to be away from him today. His husband is a Captain in the ANBU's Assassination and Intelligence Department and while Obito is immensely proud of him, it often keeps him away from home at the worst times.

Breakfast is a short affair. Obito eats quickly and starts gathering his things for the day, he won't need much since its just the first day.

Wallet.

Pocket notepad.

Scrolls.

Kunai.

"You're forgetting your keys, idiot." Kakashi says, exasperated as he hands them over. "Shut up Hatake, I was about to get them," he lies.

"That's Hatake-Uchiha to you, asshole." Kakashi responds teasingly, wiggling the ring on his finger at Obito. Obito grins at him.

They exit the apartment, setting up barriers as they lock the door behind them. Obito is pleasantly surprised when Kakashi tells him that he'll walk with him till the Academy before going to work. They arrive at the Jounin headquarters quicker than he wishes. He wonders what his three soon to be students must be doing presently. He's spent hours poring over their profiles and reports, listing down what he knows about their strengths and weaknesses. Obito stops by his locker and looks around, seeing the other Jounin leader candidates with their students' profiles in hand. Time to get to the Academy then.

He gets quieter as they approach the building and finally they stop just a couple of rooms down from the main classroom. Kakashi turns and smiles at him gently. As always, Obito's struck by how beautiful he is. He reaches his hands up, carefully straightening out the collar of Obito's flak vest and smoothing his hands down the uniform. He pulls his mask down momentarily and kisses Obito discreetly before stepping away. "You'll do great, and then you'll come home and brag all about it to me. I love you." His voice drops to a whisper.

Obito feels his heart melt into a puddle. Kakashi is perfect. "I love you too." he smiles fondly. Kakashi turns around and leaves and Obito watches him walk away until he exits through the door of the building. He takes a deep, steadying breath and runs his fingers over his wedding ring, feeling comforted by the familiar jagged edges of the gemstone.

Time to meet the kids.

He arrived early so the classroom was still full of Genin waiting for their superiors. All of them turned to look at him as he walked in and most of them looked intimidated which Obito guessed was fair enough. If the dozen facial scars didn't scare people off, the white skin grafts always finished the job.

"Uzumaki Naruto. Uchiha Sasuke and Haruno Sakura, please follow me."

Naruto whooped loudly and practically fell out of his seat in his urgency to get up. He stuck his tongue out at an Inuzuka boy and gleefully exclaimed, "Your sensei sucks, mine got here way earlier!"

Inuzuka frowned, "Whatever, Naruto."

While they exchanged insults, Sakura openly stared at Obito, clearly intimidated by him. He'd have to fix that soon.

Obito had to stifle a laugh when he noticed the look of horror and disgust on his cousin's face. No one had warned him.

They followed him out to Training Ground Three, Naruto and Sakura had started to look nervous. Sasuke still looked like he'd gulped a mouthful of spoiled milk. Obito gave them a huge grin and started his introduction.

"I'm Obito Uchiha, I love the Dango they sell at the sweet shop and I hate people who are unkind. I've been a Jounin for ten years and I specialize in Ninjutsu. I'm also a wood style user and I look forward to teaching you guys!" Nailed it. They looked a lot calmer now.

Sakura raised her hand at him like she was still in the Academy. So cute. "How come you have the wood style Obito-sensei? I thought only the first Hokage could use that."

"Yeah! Yeah! Sakura-chan's right, I think."

Obito smiled, "Very few people can use the wood style, I just happen to be one of them." He elected to skip over the more gruesome details of how he had acquired it.

"Can I ask a question too, Obito sensei?" Without waiting for a response, Naruto continued, "Why do you look like that?"

Sakura immediately smacked him over the head. "Naruto! You can't just ask people that." Obito snorted.

That didn't deter Naruto, "Also you mentioned that your surname was Uchiha! Don't tell me you're related to Sasuke." This time it was Sasuke's turn to hit him.

Fuck, he loved them so much already.

Obito rang the doorbell of his apartment, vibrating with energy and rocking back and forth with a big, goofy grin on his face. He could not wait to tell Kakashi all about his day.

"Obito, how was-" He cut Kakashi off by pulling him into his arms and kissing him enthusiastically. Kakashi laughed against his mouth and drew back to see his husband's eyes shining with joy.

"Come inside and tell me all about it."

So he did.
