Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

3rd Person POV [???]

It was dark out. A small village, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, was quiet with the exception of a special few.

The Divine Court was unique in the Region. Despite being just humans with unusual capabilities, they were renowned as exceptional beings. They were a group of 10, with five members representing the good and the evil of their world. The Sovereign of Dark and Light, their guardians, soldiers, keepers, and shamans. Each member represents one half of an image, a counterpart. Without the light, there is no darkness. Without the darkness, there is no light. The Divine Court was created from those beliefs. To clear the shades of grey as much as possible.

As they conversed in the meeting hall, a small girl ran past the door, a small spirit hovering over her shoulder. The spirit was unique, something created from her abilities to help watch and guide her until she got a grip on her powers.

She waited for the guards to pass the gate surrounding the courtyard before running past, slipping into the shadows before sliding up and over the wall, reemerging on the other side and running into the surrounding woods, the spirit flying after the child. The child ran as fast as she could, while also trying to mind the tree roots and brush in her way. Her absence would be noticed eventually. She probably had until the meeting was over. Hopefully.

She ran until she came across a cliffside, skidding to a stop and carefully looking down at the beach below her. She took a breath before carefully lowering herself down onto a narrow path carved into the rock. She did her best not to fall as she walked down to the shore, keeping her shoulder pressed against the cliff face. She looked around before she looked at the small spirit. She took a deep breath before she sat on her knees, her fingers digging into the sand as she squeezed her eyes shut. She took a shaky breath before she whispered something under her breath. Her eyes opened as her hair began to float, her eyes turned black with a lack of irises, her lips slightly parted, as if she was in a trance of some kind. The small spirit nudged her and after a long moment, its little head hitting her cheek. After a few long moments, her hair slowly fell as her head tilted down, her eyes falling closed immediately. She made a small noise of discomfort before rubbing her eyes, blinking a few times before she lifted her head again.

She looked at the spirit before she felt something in her hand. She jumped and dropped the object, standing up and taking a step back. When she looked down, she saw a black and grey dagger that she definitely didn't have before. She stared at the weapon for a few moments before she knelt down beside it.

She reached down and grabbed a hold of it, despite looking as if it was made of some kind of solid metal or even obsidian, it was lighter than most books she had read. As if it were only a thin hollow shell. She stood up before looking at the weapon. She tried slashing at the air, the spirit flying around her while trying not to get hit as it made a frantic whispering sound. "How is this supposed to-" She stopped when she tripped, the dagger snagging on something, stopping her fall.

She looked up, not knowing what the dagger was caught on. Her eyes widened and her jaw dropped a bit. The dagger appeared to have been caught on the air. She stood up straight as she kept her grip on the dagger, she tried pulling it down with no results. She held onto the handle of the dagger with both hands as she tried to use all the strength she had to make it move in any way, struggling for a bit before it began to tear downward. When she pulled it all the way down, there was a rift in the air in front of her. As she looked through the rift she saw what looked like an alleyway, but the buildings looked different along with everything else. She took a breath and gulped as she held the dagger to her chest and stepped through the rift.

She jumped when she heard the rift close behind her. She whipped around, hoping that wasn't the case, only to be met with a wall that was way too tall to climb normally.

She stared at the wall before she jumped and stumbled back, startled by what sounded like a few small explosions. The small spirit was hidden behind her. She scrambled back against the wall when she noticed a large shadow on the wall.

She covered her head with her hands as she screwed her eyes shut, regretting not just staying in bed and learning to deal with how things in her home were run. The faint sound of footsteps was heard before a rough voice. "A kid?" She stayed still, her mind not able to make sense of the loud noises all around her, making her head hurt and spin. Not to mention there was some kind of toxicity to the air that made her throat burn.

She flinched when she felt a hand on her head, before she felt her hands being slowly removed from the top of her head. She peeked up through her hair, her violet eyes glowing nervously.  "Take it easy. I'm not gonna hurt you." She lowered her hands to her knees as she looked at the person in front of her. He appeared to be in all black with some kind of mask over his face and a cape.

The tall figure looked around before looking back at the child. "Where are your parents?" The girl stayed quiet as she just looked down, unsure of how to answer the question. She heard the older man hum under his breath before he sighed and stood up, the motion making her look back up at him. Feeling tiny now that she saw how tall he was. "Let's get you out of here." The man held his hand out as he looked down at her. She hesitated for a second before she took his hand and stood up, constantly glancing around as she kept her hand on her head in an attempt to soothe her growing headache. He led her to a large...thing with what looked like wheels. She jumped when the top opened when they got close.

The man had to help her into whatever it was in front of her before jumping into his own seat next to her, the girl fidgeting as she looked at all the different things in front of her.

The man pressed something on a rectangle in front of both of them and spoke. "Alfred. We're having company." The child braced herself as the vehicle started to move, the spirit had appeared to her right near her hand. She placed her hands on the side, feeling her adrenaline running from how fast they were going as everything passed in a blur.

"Hey, kid." She turned to the man. "Mind telling me your name?"

She fidgeted with her shirt as she sat down properly before she replied. "...Devlin."
