Work Text:

Obi-Wan exits the queen's chambers, letting out his irritation with a sigh, having finally given her and her entourage the good news of being back en-route to Coruscant. He's never liked politicians. Not even before Melidaan. This queen grates on his every nerve.

But Obi-Wan is a Jedi, and he releases his emotions into the Force with but a moment's pause, before continuing down the small corridor to the common area. One of the handmaidens brushes past them on her path to return to her queen.

The room is empty when he arrives, save for one Anakin Skywalker, wrapped in a red blanket, eyes downcast- until they spot Obi-Wan.

"Mister Qui-Gon said that he foresees me becoming a great Jedi Knight," the boy tells him. "What does foresee mean?"

Obi-Wan sits down across from him. Might as well indulge the boy. "To foresee something is to...is to picture a potential future, in one's mind. To see a likely path that someone or something may go down."

"What do you see in me?" Anakin asks.

He blinks. "Why don't you ask that of Qui-Gon? I don't think I've known you long enough to answer that question."

"My mom says it's good to have multiple opinions."

Obi-Wan feels a prickle of amusement, and offers a humble smile. "Well, she's right about that. Hang on," he says wryly, "Give me a moment to bask in your presence."

He closes his eyes and falls into the Force, feeling it wrap around him warmly, welcoming him back into its open arms. Obi-Wan doesn't have to seek far. Anakin's presence is strong, radiant, blinding. He can hardly sense anything else, not without a full meditation retreat.

Anakin’s presence is a flame, surrounded by a deep, flammable darkness. For now, the small ember is akin to a lit candle, glowing, keeping the darkness at bay. It's soothing, really. Gentle. Kind. Warm. But that flame, Obi-Wan can feel it stretching, reaching for more. Hungry. And if it catches on the wrong thing...

It could turn into a raging fire. Obi-Wan opens his eyes. Anakin Skywalker could be dangerous. He could be an enemy that even the strongest of the Jedi would fear.

But Obi-Wan can't tell him that.

"I see light," he says instead, because that had been true, too. "And warmth."
