Chapter Text

Chapter 1

Caroline was pissed, she hated feeling like that insecure high school girl again. While she was still in high school she wasn’t insecure any longer, or at least she tried not to be. Her friends were hiding something from her, they had been acting weird and not looking at her directly in the eye for the past week. She had expected it from Daemon and even of Elena, but she had thought better of Bonnie and Stefan. Apparently, she had been wrong to trust them because they were hiding things from her too. Stefan had been acting weird since finding out about Daemon and Elena, pulling away from everyone and being his brooding self.

She made it to the Lockwood cellar, knowing that Tyler would have an idea of what was happening. She had seen him talking to Daemon and she wanted to know what they were planning. Lately, a lot of their plans had included her, making her Klaus’s distraction while they did something stupid that had the potential to get them all killed. She was tired of stupid plans and following Daemon’s idiotic ideas, they backfired more often than not.

Her foot froze on the last step at the image that met her eyes. While she had suspected it, she had pushed those thoughts aside, not wanting to give in to her insecurities. She should have listened to her instincts, they were never wrong. Tyler’s eyes had widened and he stood up quickly while pulling on his clothes. Hayley did the same, not even bothering to look guilty.

“Well, I have to say that while I suspected this, I thought you had better taste.” Caroline gave Tyler a mocking stare, not allowing her pain to show. She would be damned if she showed Tyler how much he had hurt her. She had known something was different since his return, there had been something missing. Things between her and Tyler had been broken for a while, but they were supposed to be friends too and he hadn’t even respected that. “I wanted to talk to you, but I can see you are busy. Well, it doesn’t matter, it wasn’t that important anyways.”

She turned on her heel and walked out of the cellar, she would go home, have a good cry and then forget all about the traitorous dog who had fucked some other woman while still being in a relationship with her.

“Caroline!” Tyler was in front of her in a flash, making her stop abruptly or risk slamming into him. “Please, we need to talk. There are things you need to know, things I have to explain. This is not what it looks like.”

“That’s the line you are going with?” She shook her head. “I thought you would at least try to be a bit more original, find a better excuse, or at least have the balls to tell me the truth, but I can see I will be severely disappointed.”

He extended a hand but refrained from touching her when she glared at him. “Please, you have to let me explain.”

“I don’t have to do anything. Fuck as many sluts as you want, it doesn’t matter to me anymore. We are done.”

The betrayal and the lie hurt more than the act of him fucking Hayley. She had asked him several times if he had feelings for the other girl and if anything had happened between them and he had always denied it. She hated that she had allowed him to make her doubt herself, to make her question her instincts.

She got in her car and made her way to the Salvatore mansion, wanting to talk to her friends. Right now she had more important things to worry about than who Tyler was fucking.

She parked and jumped out of her car before heading towards the door, she would figure out what was wrong no matter what.

“Caroline!” She stopped at the sound of Bonnie’s voice and turned to look at her friend. “I thought you had a meeting with the rest of the prom committee.”

“It was canceled.” She did not miss Bonnie’s guilty look or the way the witch looked down, trying to avoid her gaze. Caroline narrowed her eyes, the suspicion rising inside her, this time she refused to ignore her gut instinct. “But thank god it was canceled, because I found something very interesting.”

Bonnie cleared her throat, clearly uncomfortable. “What happened?”

“I found Tyler with Hayley, apparently, they had been fucking behind my back since before Tyler returned.” Bonnie flinched and Caroline took deep breaths, trying to calm herself down. The monster inside of her tried to push to the surface, wanting to be released, but she kept a firm hold on it. “But you already knew that.”

“I am sorry, Caroline.” Bonnie gave her an apologetic look, pleading for her to understand. “I know you are hurt and I am so sorry for that, but we need Tyler and Hayley if we are going to take Klaus down. We can’t do it on our own and I have lost my magic.”

“So lying to me was the obvious solution.” She didn’t bother to phrase it as a question. “But I shouldn’t be surprised, is not the first time I have been left out of important parts of your lives or the first time you and the others have put your own self-interests before me.”

It was incredible that after all the years they had known each other and had been friends things had not changed. They had been stuck in the same cycle for years and years, but Caroline was sick and tired of it. She refused to give up everything she wanted for the people who had no qualms using and lying to her when it was convenient for them.

2 days later

“We should leave.” Elijah didn’t look too happy about staying in Mystic Falls, not that Klaus blamed him, they were used to much grander cities. “There is nothing keeping us here.”

Klaus took a sip of his scotch and didn’t bother to look at this brother. “There is the doppelgänger. I will not be leaving without her.”

“She is no longer of any use to you Niklaus.” Elijah had been trying to get him to leave Elena alone since they arrived. “She is a vampire, so her blood is of no use to you.”

Klaus shrugged, not willing to discuss the subject. Elijah could feel how restless he was and he knew that bad things happened when Klaus became bored. Klaus was sure his brother believed he would go on a rampage if left unsupervised for too long. Klaus refused to tell Elijah the real reason he wanted to stay in Mystic Falls, he knew his brother would try to get involved and that was the last thing he wanted.

“The misfits are planning something.” Elijah groaned when Rebekah walked in, walking to the liquor cabinet and pouring herself a drink. His sister sat on the other end of the sofa and gave them an annoyed look. “There is something going on near the Lockwood property. I could feel the magic from a mile away.”

Elijah frowned. “I was under the impression that Ms. Bennet could no longer practice magic.”

“I don’t know what to tell you.” Rebekah shrugged, not too worried. “There was a lot of magic and they are the only ones in this cursed town who are always trying to kill us or get rid of us.”

Klaus knew the Salvatores and their band of friends were planning something against him and his family, but since the Bennet witch had no magic he thought it would take them longer to come up with a new plan. While he was sure their plot would fail, just as it always did, he would not sit in his mansion and wait for them to come to him.

“I will see this for myself.” He stood up and grabbed his jacket, not wanting to waste any time. “I will let you both know if I find anything.”

“I will go with you.” Klaus resisted the urge to roll his eyes and turned to look at his brother. Elijah did not seem to care that he didn’t want him to go. “Is better if there are two of us in case they are actually planning something.”

This time he did roll his eyes. “And you don’t think I have what it takes to handle a few teenagers?”

He hid his smile when he noticed the twitch in his brother’s eye, letting him know he was annoyed. “I know you can handle them, but I think it would be better this way.”

He didn’t bother to argue, not wanting to waste precious time trying to convince his brother to stay. They used vampire speed to make it to the Lockwood property and Klaus immediately understood what Rebekah had been talking about. The magic was so strong he could almost taste it. He could feel the air around him pulse and chills appeared on his skin. He saw Elijah shudder and his brother gave him a concerned look. Apparently, Elijah had been right and the two of them would be needed for this. He moved closer to where the magic was coming from and came to a stop when he saw a decrepit-looking cabin. He could tell whatever was giving off so much power was coming from inside. He tried to listen and could hear two rapid heartbeats, he could tell that whoever they were, they were afraid. He signaled Elijah who nodded before moving to the opposite side of the cabin.

Klaus listened for a few more seconds, but only the two heartbeats remained, he could not hear or smell anyone else. He kicked in the door, sending it flying, and slam against the opposite wall. He heard a squeal before being thrown against the far wall and held there by an invisible force. Elijah came in but did not make it far before ending up in the exact same predicament Klaus was in. Neither of them was able to move, but that was not what shocked Klaus, it was the two small children standing there. A boy and a girl, both of them appeared to be the same age, not older than five. The little girl was holding out her palm and he knew she was the one keeping him and Elijah pinned against the wall.

Elijah almost choked in a breath and his eyes widened as he stared at both children. There was something familiar about them, especially the boy. Klaus was still trying to figure it out when the girl gasped and lowered her hand making Klaus and Elijah fall to the ground.

Klaus stood up and opened his mouth, but before he could say anything the girl let out a happy laugh and threw herself at him, wrapping her arms around his legs. “Daddy!”

Klaus’s eyes widened as he stared at the child hugging him and the little boy who moved closer. What the hell was going on?
