Work Text:

The second the officers left and Conrad closed his front door, he fell to the ground and started sobbing. He couldn't believe what he had just been told; Nic had been declared dead after being involved in a car accident. Conrad could barely breathe and couldn't think straight. He sat there for God only knows how long when he decided he needed to relay the news to their coworkers at Chastain. The short drive to the hospital felt like an eternity to Conrad. All he could think about was how Nic didn't deserve this and how he should be dead instead of her. He couldn't bear living a life without her in it. He remembered how he felt when they broke up and how much he missed her. He knew after the initial shock sunk in, he would feel a thousand times worse than he felt then. Finally, he arrived at Chastain; he didn't even take the time to properly park; he just jumped out of his jeep and sprinted inside. He could faintly hear the concerned voices of AJ and Devon asking him where the fire was and why he was running so fast, but he just ignored them and ran straight to Kit's office.

Kit and Bell were eating takeout in her office when Conrad burst in without warning. "Conrad! I thought you went home for the night?" Kit exclaimed, clearly confused as to why he was standing before her. "It's… There was…" words were coming out of his mouth uncontrollably. He kept trying to tell them what happened but couldn't speak straight. A 'What the hell' was all he could get out before he started crying. He covered his face with his hands as Kit and Bell jumped up and started comforting him.

"What's wrong?" Randolph asked. "She's gone," Conrad choked out between sobs. "What?" Both Bell and Kit questioned at the same time. "Nics dead," Conrad spoke just above a whisper. "She was in a car accident". A few minutes passed, and none of them said another word. "My god. I can't believe it," Kit broke the dreadful silence. Just then, AJ and Devon walked in and immediately stopped at the sight in front of them. They had never seen Conrad cry, which they decided must mean something terrible had happened. "What happened?" AJ spoke, "Nic's dead," Kit answered, saving Conrad the trouble of trying to break the news again. "I'm so sorry, Conrad," Devon spoke. That had been his first time speaking since he walked in. Conrad could no longer handle being crowded and rushed out of the office.

"Someone needs to make that announcement to everyone else," AJ spoke, breaking the sad silence in the room. "I will," Kit volunteered. "No, you need to go find Conrad; he doesn't need to be alone now. I will do it," Bell said. Kit ultimately agreed and went out to find the doctor. She eventually found him in the on-call room and sat down beside him. She was on the verge of tears, but she pushed back her emotions so she could be of comfort to the man. "You know, she wanted to have a baby," Conrad spoke. "She decided that it was worth another shot, given everything that happened with the miscarriage and all." He paused briefly before continuing, "I told her that we should wait a bit and that we weren't running out of time to have a baby. I can't believe I said that. Why couldn't I just go with it? It's not like I didn't want to be a father. Now it's too late." Kit didn't know how to answer, so instead, she put her hand on Conrad's shoulder to provide comfort. She eventually suggested that he needed rest, which he reluctantly agreed to, much to Kit's surprise. She then exited the on-call room and went to find Dr. Bell.

She caught the tail end of his speech, telling everyone the tragic news. She grabbed his arm and pulled him aside to update him on Conrad. She told him it would be a long road ahead, but he was resting for now. She omitted the details, hoping that what she said would satisfy Randolph. "I can't even imagine what he must be feeling; if I lost you, Kit, I wouldn't be able to live with myself." "I just can't believe she's dead," Kit said, breaking down into tears. Bell hugged her, and Kit rested her head on his shoulder. "Why don't we go to sleep and deal with this tomorrow," Bell suggested, and Kit agreed.

Devon sat in the cafeteria, drinking that crappy coffee that he hated so much. At this point, he didn't care; he'd do anything to make it through this shift. He decided to check on Conrad, so he got up and headed toward the on-call room. When he arrived, he opened the door and was surprised to see the empty room. He then called Kit, but she was of no help. He then grabbed AJ, and they both started searching all over the hospital for Conrad.

They eventually found him sitting on the edge of the roof. "Conrad," Devon spoke. "What are you doing, man?" AJ said, voice barely louder than a whisper. "I can't live without her. I don't want to do this without her." Conrad expressed. Devon and AJ slowly creep towards Conrad's position. When they got close enough, they grabbed him and pulled him up, telling him it was all gonna be ok, and for the first time that night, he might have actually believed it, just a little bit.
