The Little Nursey with the Umbrella [fic + filk]

Summary:

The story of two defense-men sleeping in the same room, told through lullabies.
Or
Sometimes, late at night, Nursey can't help making up little songs. Good thing that Dex is fast asleep and can't hear him.

Notes:

This work was created for the Voiceteam 2024 for challenge Soporific, which involved creating an audio fanwork meant to help people fall asleep and well. We all know that the o.g. audio work to help fall asleep was the lullaby and I just couldn't get the idea of Nursey making up little songs to the melodies of lullabies out of my head. (Nearly) all the lullabies will be set to the melodies of my favorite Danish lullabies that I grew up with. When me or my sibling were put to bed we always had the choice between a good night story or a lullaby or three (unless my mom was the one doing it, then there would also be the option of a logic puzzle, which my sibling especially chose a lot). I always loved it and I know most of them by heart to this day, I have also sung a few to my partner from time to time.
The title is taken from the title of yet another Danish lullaby "Den lille Ole med Paraplyen" (The little Ole with the umbrella). He's the Danish version of The Sandman: a young boy who flies around with his umbrella and sprinkles magic sleep dust in children's eyes, while his umbrella protects them from nightmares.
Anyways, enjoy! May you sleep well
(The seventh chapter is just a playlist of all the chapters so that you can listen to the whole thing without interruptions if you so please)

The first time Nursey does it, it's after a kegster and Dex is fast asleep. It was the first kegster of junior year and for once Dex had been the one getting hammered, while Nursey had stayed sober. Farrah was coming tomorrow and they would kill him if he was hungover on their one day together.

He has still stayed up late, trying to fall asleep while the first SMH kegster of the year is under way would be a lost cause, but he kept away from the tub juice and the beer pong table, preferring to dance with his teammates or roam the kitchen conversations. It felt good helping Dex to his bed for once instead of the other way around. When he had come back from the bathroom Dex was no more than a tuft of ginger hair sticking up over his comforter and Nursey climbed up to his bunk as silently as possible so as not to wake him.

He’s looking forward to spending tomorrow with Farrah, but thinking of them leaves him a bit home sick in the darkness of the room and before he knows it he is singing along to the melody of one of his mum’s lullabies.

Drunken Dex looks at the dance floor

As it's slowly winding down

He is tired can't stand up more

Then Nursey he grabs the clown

Nags him

Drags him

Up the stairs to sleepy town

And he falls asleep before long

Well he has just partied hard

Done a kegstand, lost at beer pong

All in all been less than smart

Screaming

Beaming

Sung the songs he knows by heart

And how drunken Dex has struggled

Forced to dance by Bitty's charm

Tango's q's made him befuddled

Hit himself and came to harm

Scarfed it

Barfed it

Yet he did not loose his charm

Now he sleeps here soft and boring

Fell asleep in jeans again

Soon he will begin his snoring

I hope sleep will reach me then

Hush now

Hush now

Wonder when he'll wake again

Nursey turns onto his side and closes his eyes.

Notes:

This chapter’s lullaby is based on “Lille Poul ser ud på solen” (Little Poul looks out at the sun) and I managed to mirror the narrative progression of the song in Nursey’s song (I could write a thousand foot notes in this one, I have put way too many thought into this). For those interested you can listen to the original Danish song here (any differences in melody is due to my mother being right and them being wrong) and read the original text + my rough translation here:

Lille Poul ser ud på solen - Little Poul looks out at the sun
Mens den synker over eng - As it sinks over the meadow
Synker selv i søvn i stolen - He also sinks down in the chair
Så tager mor sin lille dreng - Then mother takes her little boy
Klæ’r ham - Dresses him
Bæ’r ham - Carries him
Op ad trappen og i seng - Up the stairs and to bed

Og han sover med det samme - And he sleeps at once
Han har rigt nok også slidt - He has really also worked
Bygget huse, gravet gange - Build houses, dug corridors
Malet mænd på fars stakit - Painted men on dad’s fence
Leget - Played
Meget - A lot
Gemt sig bort og råbt tittit - Hid himself and called [the standard thing that children call in hide-and-seek that I could not find out no matter how many articles on hide-and-seek I read, do you guys even have a standard thing?]

Og hvor lille Poul har døjet - And how little Poul has struggled
Brækket halen på sin ko - Broken the tail of his cow
Fået en myrer ind i øjet - Gotten an ant in the eye
Og fået vand i sine sko - and gotten water in his shoes
Trallet - Sung
Faldet - Fallen
Han kan nok ha’ brug for ro - He can really need quiet

Og han drømmer, så han sukker - And he dreams so he sighs
Med en finger i sin mund - With a finger in his mouth
Og så ler han, så han klukker - And then he laughs and he giggles
Når han drømmer om sin hund - When he dreams about his dog
Stille - Hush
Stille - Hush
Mor hun smiler til hans blund. - Mother she smiles at his sleep
