Chapter Text
Amity Blight has always been a light sleeper. Small disturbances around her while she was sleeping were almost always enough for her to be up and aware in mere seconds, which was very good for her ability to "survive" living with sworn pranksters like her siblings Edric and Emira.
It did make the eventual sleeping part of any sleepovers quite bothersome, especially those that included Skara, who often proved the truth of the Isles' saying, 'snores like a bard.'
Being a light sleeper also meant she didn't have any trouble waking up early to perform all the tasks her mother Odalia expected from her 'as a Blight.' Amity was incredibly happy she managed to skip most of those in the recent months, and instead even got to experience the bliss of waking up before her amazing girlfriend, in the sleepovers they got to spend together at the Owl House.
Unfortunately after too few of those sleepovers, the Emperor's Coven attacked the resident. Luz, her little brother King, and her (much more than just a) mentor Eda the Owl Lady had to flee for their lives and hide somewhere else on the Isles.
Then came the Day of Unity…
Now Amity is once again sleeping in Luz's bedroom, but this time it isn't as a friend or girlfriend, but as a from the Demon Realm, who saved her life by escaping with her friends and girlfriend to her girlfriend's home realm, the Human Realm. There they all immediately offered shelter by Luz's mother Camila.
And somehow despite such crossing being extremely rare in the entire history of both realms, the four witches were not the first Demon Realm natives Camila has taken care of.
When Luz found herself on the Boiling Isles by accidentally walking through a portal door belonging to Eda, a young Basilisk on the run found her chance to escape the Emperor Coven.
Realizing she could not hide in the Human Realm while walking around in her true form, she used her species' shapeshifting powers to disguise herself as the only human being she ever saw, Luz Noceda, and ended up masquerading as her.
Frightened about losing this new amazing and most of all safe life she now had, the Basilisk Vee kept the truth from Luz's mother for months. Eventually, a crisis in the form of a local crazy and dangerous man led to Camila finding out Vee wasn't Luz.
Vee already thought she had to run again, but Camila had no problems understanding that Vee hadn't acted maliciously, and was just a brave little girl trying to survive in a world (two worlds) that had robbed her of the love she deserved.
Amity learned of this story from Luz, who was there when the crises unfolded, although not in a physical form. The reveal of Vee not being Luz, and Luz not being able at the time to cross back physically to the Human realm, led to a very emotional conversation between the human witch and her painstakingly worried mother. The conversation lay heavily on Luz's heart but after some gentle coaxing, she shared the details, and included Vee's story, with her girlfriend and two best friends.
There was one part of Vee's story that Luz decided to keep from them, believing it was Vee's decision whether to share it or not: Basilisks were brought back from their extinction by the tyrannical ruler of the Isles, Emperor Belos. He treated them as nothing but lab rats and forced them by torture to participate in experiments that would study their magic-siphoning abilities. Those studies are likely what allowed him to modify a draining spell so it wouldn't just drain the magic out of its victim – it would also drain the life out of them.
His intention was not to create another tool of murder for his regime but to finalize his true plan of bringing about the genocide of the entire Isles. He planned to use the power of an eclipse to cast the 'improved' draining spell on as many witches and demons as he possibly could, thus becoming the greatest human witch-hunter in all of history.
Neither the rebel efforts nor those of Luz, who personally confronted Belos after letting herself be captured in Hunter's (the Golden Guard of the empire turned rebel) place to save his life, couldn't stop the spell.
It was stopped by a child with godlike powers called The Collector who King somehow freed while they were barely surviving a monstrous Belos. But immediately after getting rid of Belos and moving the moon to end the draining spell, The Collector started destroying the structure they were all in, forcing them to flee to the Human Realm through the portal the emperor prepared for himself.
They landed in the cold (Thank Titan) human rain just outside an abandoned and ransacked-looking old house, bruised and almost in shock. Amity wasn't able to do much more than silently hug and comfort her girlfriend, who just had her little brother ripped from her arms.
At the same time, Hunter and Willow were doing the same for Gus, who ended up being the first but very much not the last amongst them to break down that day. After a few more shell-shocked moments, Luz took hold of the situation and asked them to follow her to her mother's house.
Hunter then asked her whether her mother would be capable… and willing to shelter them all. Amity didn't miss how he couldn't help himself from quickly glancing towards her when the word 'willing' came out of his mouth, and she couldn't exactly blame him given that Odalia was the last so-called mother he interacted with.
Luz first reassured her him that her mami wouldn't turn them away, and then started answering the more logistical question of her capabilities. It was then that the topic of Vee the harmless teenaged Basilisk being safely harbored at the Noceda household came up again.
"Number Five." Hunter blurted out, becoming somehow even paler.
"Don't call her that!" Luz immediately snapped with an emotional hint in her voice that Amity spent the last couple of minutes worrying about its absence.
Hunter flinched, and Amity could easily see how Luz's anger turned to guilt.
"I thought… I mean I didn't… I" Hunter started stammering, and suddenly it looked less like he was protectively supporting an injured Gus, and more like it was the other way around.
Amity stopped herself from giving out the snarky retort that was there at the tip of her tongue and instead chose to redirect that energy for the benefit of the group, cooly explaining they could only deal with this issue after getting out of the now too-cold rain, and having their assortment of injuries treated.
With the flurry of activity their 'arrival' instigated, and with Vee not recognizing him as the Golden Guard (which Hunter didn't seem surprised about), they ended up not dealing with it that night.
It ended with Hunter and Gus having the basement set as a bedroom for them and with the four girls all together in Luz's (and apparently now also Vee's) bedroom.
"Good thing we already have bunkbeds," Vee said with the same cheery tone of voice.
Amity noticed It was similiar to the one Vee used to describe the functionality of what Amity and Willow belatedly realized was not a threat but a harmless appliance (humans sure had lots of those),
but it also had a hint of hesitation and perhaps worry at Luz's response.
Which was tired smile (that Amity was already feeling broken hearted at seeing so often) followed by a hug, with Vee first being surprised and then pretty much melting into it.
After that, they all lay down in their beds, and after what felt like hours of having her brain trying and failing to process all the events she had experienced in the last twenty-four hours, exhaustion finally claimed Amity and she drifted to sleep.
Only to wake up to the sound of Vee screaming.
