Work Text:
Iwaizumi had recently gotten into a relationship with a girl from their school, however Oikawa had feelings for the guy since they were just little kids. he kept those feelings hidden and locked away because he didn’t want to ruin their friendship. the whole reason Iwaizumi got into a relationship with that girl in the first place was because he wanted to push away his feelings for best friend, Oikawa Tooru. he had fallen for Oikawa when they were just little kids, but he tried to get rid of his feelings for him because he thought Oikawa was straight. he had a ton of fan girls swooning over him that were all mainly good looking, and Oikawa was also very good looking so he wouldn’t have to try hard to get himself a girlfriend of his own.
they were in class at the moment and the only sounds heard in the room were the squeaking of the pencil lead writing on the paper of their notebooks, the ticking of the wall clock, and Iwaizumi’s soft breathing next to him. they sat next to each other in eighth period, and Oikawa took his time to admire Iwaizumi. his features perfectly blended together to make his face, his voice was clear and smooth with the words, and his personality was just perfect. he was perfect. he couldn’t help himself but stare at Iwaizumi, he wanted him so bad but his girlfriend was in the way. it wasn’t entirely her fault that Iwaizumi loved her with all his heart but he was so jealous. he would have done anything to be in her position instead of being a second choice to his best friend. he wanted to talk to Iwaizumi but like the good student his best friend was, he was genuinely taking notes for the class. so against it and decided on passing notes instead so they would have a smaller chance of getting in trouble for it.
‘how are you and your gf doing, Iwa-chan?’
he wrote on a note, passing it to Iwaizumi.
Iwaizumi saw the small post-it note on the other end of his notebook, he gently picked it up and placed on the side of his notebook he was using. his olive green eyes scanned over the big, messy handwriting written in pencil lead. he smiled before picked up his pencil and started writing in his neat and clean handwriting. he stuck the post-it note on Oikawa’s desk.
‘we’re fine, how about you? im sorry we haven’t gotten a chance to hang out as often. i promise i’ll make it up to you.’
‘i’m fine, just been busy with studying. we could always just walk home together today if you want.”
suddenly, the bell rang signifying the end of eighth period. the teacher dismissed the class and told everyone to finish up the worksheet they started in class today. everyone immediately dashed out of the classroom and spread across the walls of the hallway to try and find their lockers in the large crowds of people in the hallway. oikawa packed his stuff and stood up as he waited for Iwaizumi to do the same, he placed the note in his pocket and walked with Iwaizumi out of the classroom into the hallway, their lockers were on the same wall and were significantly close to each other so they walked together until a high pitched voice came all the way from the other end of the hallway.
“Hajiimeeee~!!”
Iwaizumi turned and smiled warmly when he saw his girlfriend, Masako Seijun. she was smiling, her light pink lips curved into a small grin as she waved her hand. he walked up to them as she giggled. Oikawa felt his heart sink once more at the sight of his girlfriend, he knew that he would have to watch the person he was in love with end up getting closer with someone else in a relationship. he tried to keep a neutral expression and ended up plastering on a half-hearted smile as he turned towards Masako. she walked up to Iwaizumi was slung her arms around his neck as she giggled more. when she stopped, she turned her head that was on Iwiazumi’s shoulder to look at Oikawa, he warmly smiled and quickly waved her hand at him.
“oh hey Oikawa!”
Oikawa just forced his smile to widen a tiny bit to make it seem warm as he greeted Masako back with another small wave.
“hey”
he said quietly, his voice lacking its usual enthusiasm. Masako only giggled a tiny bit and turned her head back to her boyfriend, her sleek black hair draping over his shoulder and now down his arm. they stayed like that for a small while longer before Masako released her loose hug on him and stood in front of him.
“are we still going to the park today Haji?”
“yeah, i’ll meet you in five minutes.”
Masako nodded and smiled at them both before waving them goodbye before walking over to the main exit and standing by it on her phone, trying to pass the time for waiting for her boyfriend. with a small smile on her light pink lips. Oikawa silently turned around and unlocked his locker, taking his items out and placing his books inside before he shut the door again. he faced the other exit of the school, he faced the opposite way of Iwaizumi.
“uh, im gonna go.”
“wait, where are you going?”
“home, since you and your girlfriend are going on a date we can’t walk home together i assume”
Iwaizumi felt extremely guilty, he knew that what Oikawa had said was true. he hadnt meant to abandon their usual routine of walking home together after school or practice had ended, but it was difficult to say no to his girlfriend.
”shittykawa listen, just—“
“Iwa-chan, it’s fine. we could always just walk home on monday together, it’s not a big deal. plus you like being with her.”
“yeah, i do like being with her but your still my best friend shittykawa.”
“i know, but she’s waiting for you, you can’t disappoint her can you? we could always just meet up on the weekends.”
“yeah okay.”
Iwaizumi let out a sigh, knowing that Oikawa was right. he really didnt want to let his girlfriend down, but he was still worried about Oikawa. He could always tell when the setter was upset or trying to hide something, and right now, he was doing exactly that. he wasn’t really sure what to do with him, all he could do was try get him to speak up.
“ill see you on saturday at the park then?”
“yeah, bye Iwaizumi.”
Iwaizumi watched as Oikawa walked away, and he couldn’t help but feel guilty. he could clearly tell something was off with his best friend, but he also had to keep his girlfriend happy by spending most of his time with her.
‘ill talk to him on saturday,”
he thought to himself as he stood there in the middle of the hallway, frozen in time, his girlfriend on one side of the hallway and his best friend on the other.
