Chapter Text
It had been approximately ten years since Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers broke things off with each other. During that time, Scott's been trying to find myself; it's been a difficult and long journey, much like life itself. He's an impulsive dumbass, the kind that doesn't think at all; granted, he is on working on it, but like everything in his life, it's a very obvious work in progress.
He's a wreck, more or less, the kind that's slowly heading towards a collision course with an ugly little thing called fate. He can't bear it, but he knows that deep down, his disappointment is immeasurable. He was so transfixed on Ramona, figuring that she'd be the one for him, the woman he'd get old with, only to be proven wrong. It stings more potently than any dagger ever could.
As he's walking around looking glum, he gets a text message from an old flame, Kim Pine. His first girlfriend feels like forever ago at this point. They met in high school, and he made the idiotic choice to leave town without telling her. It's something that he's always regretted, but they both seem to have moved past it or so he believes, at least.
The concern on his face as he reads it is something else; he knows that he and Kim always had their differences. But the text... she just sent? It's very concerning; he doesn't have much time and has to hurry if he wants to ensure that she doesn't do anything drastic to herself. He might be an idiot, but he is far from heartless. He rushes over to Kim's apartment swiftly.
Once Scott had entered, She was about to fall from a balcony. There was no way in hell he would allow that to happen! Scott made a beeline to her and grabbed her arm, gently putting her down on the ground. Kim reluctantly got back up to look at him, and she had the most weary expression Scott had seen in quite some time.
Scott's impulsive, no doubt about it, but that doesn't mean he'd willingly allow someone, let alone an ex, to do something like this. Kim was quiet for the longest time, not speaking or uttering a word. She seemed depressed about something or perhaps someone. The pain in her eyes was something that Scott had felt before with Envy Adams.
Kim spoke up bluntly. "You should've let me fall... Pilgrim." Scott squinted at her. "Why is that Kim? I know we had our differences, but-" Kim interjected. "PFT, I don't need your pity; you don't give a shit; you never have!" Scott was flabbergasted. "That is not true, and you know it!" Kim was always a little blunt, but she seemed out of it; perhaps she was drunk? That could explain her irritability.
Kim rolled her eyes at his remark, finding it to be one she didn't agree with. She's about to provide some reasons of her own that she'll get into. Kim is not the kind of person who shies away from telling others her thoughts; she's very direct and to the point, like she is about everything in her life, especially regarding Scott Pilgrim's Toronto's biggest idiot. He is the kind of moron that would probably get his hand caught in a cookie jar somehow or accidentally cause a house to be on fire due to his inability to process things, let alone think at all. He's far from the worst person in the world but has a lot to work on.
"Oh really? The guy that left town without telling me cares about me?! Sure, and I'm the Queen of England!" Scott groaned. "Okay, that wasn't my finest moment. I will admit I could've handled that better. I could've handled a lot of things better." Kim scoffed. "Yeah, no shit. At least you're admitting it, I guess. That's a first." Scott exhaled. "Yeah, I suppose it is. Kim, why were you on the balcony?" Scott asked her. "You want to know? Got my heart broken by another dick! His name was Matt or something, couldn't stand it." Scott could, unfortunately, relate to her anger here.
Scott felt the need to say something, even if he had the worst choice of words possible. And happened to fumble across with his phrasing more than once. He knew that she was under a lot of distress. Scott would be lying if he said he hadn't been in her shoes before. "Kim, I know what you're going through, I do. When Envy Adams and I split up, I drank a lot, enough to nearly kill me. But you can't let this man define your worth, Kim; you have more potential than you realize. Don't let one guy define it."
Kim scoffed. "Easy for you to say, anytime a pretty girl comes by, she becomes glued to you! You wanna know something else... Pilgrim?" Kim asked. "Uh, sure, Kim, what is it?" Scott seemed perplexed. "Do you know how many times it angered me, seeing you constantly hurt yourself again and again, all for Ramona! She would constantly treat you like shit, but you keep allowing yourself to be emotionally hurt because of her. It's pathetic, honestly." Pilgrim sighed.
She did have a point, as much as he hated to admit it. At times, Ramona could be cold and distant, especially when she feels afraid of going further. So much so that she often pushed many of her former partners away. He wanted to argue against that, say that she was wrong, but he knew that he couldn't. She had an irrefutable point that held a lot of merit. Scott couldn't ignore her criticism if he tried, especially when it was this obvious and blatant.
"I...UGH, yeah, you got me there, Kim. I put so much of my heart and soul into that woman, only to get crushed, disappointed, and tossed away like the seven other suitors she had before her. I thought she was the one, but I thought wrong." Kim nodded. "You know, the one for you has always been here, right? Just waiting for you to come back to her and leave Ramona?"
Scott processed what he heard. "You still have feelings for me after all this time?" Scott asked her. "As much as I've tried to deny it, Pilgrim, yeah, I do. But you don't care, right? You're just going to ignore what I said... and go running back to her again just to hurt yourself some more." Kim scoffed.
Scott listened to her rant, trying to think of how to express himself eloquently, let alone professionally. Given the context of their history and how much had changed since high school, he also had some words that he wanted to say, and he wasn't sure how to formulate them best. After a deep inhale, he began to think of a way to respond, letting it be known that there might be more to him than meets the eye.
"Kim, I'll admit I've thought about you too. More than I'd like to admit, honestly, I still remember our times together fondly, but I just don't want to hurt you again. Especially with how stupid I am, it's just I don't want to weigh you down." Kim shook her head. "Hasn't stopped you before, has it? I've seen the way you look at me, too."
Scott blushed for a few seconds. "I-are you sure it's right? I just you know there's a lot at stake. You might get hurt again if we date." Kim walked up to him and grabbed his hand. "Maybe I will, but you aren't living life if you're not taking risks, are you?" Scott gazed into her eyes. "I guess not... no." Kim smiled. "Well, dumbass, you gonna keep beating yourself up, or you gonna do something?" Kim was waiting to see if he'd make a move.
He was aware that she was testing him, but the temptation to kiss her was a strong one, the kind that he couldn't deny if he tried. After all she is one of the most beautiful people he's ever been with in the first place. So, after stewing it over, he decides what he will do, all the while Kim's smirking at him. Knowing the type of person he is, Pine already knows what Scott will do.
Scott wasn't sure if he'd regret this or not, but he knew there was no backing out of this now. "I'm going to make a move. There's no turning back, is there?" He asked her. "Nope." Was Kim's only response, Scott walked up to her and passionately kissed her, and the two walked over to her bedroom.
The kiss deepened before breaking it off to regain air for both of them. Before long the two of them had passed out. The rest of the night was a blur; Scott couldn't remember much, if at all. It happened so suddenly, too, that he was passed out for the moment, with no recollection of what had transpired.
It was a long night, full of yelling, disagreements, and some other third thing that the Canadian boy couldn't recall. Eventually, after what feels like forever, he wakes up; it appears that he's in Kim Pine's bed, with the redhead clinging onto him tightly; he had a vague idea of what happened the night before, although his memory was wonky at best. Kim was already awake. "Did we-" Kim interrupted him again.
"Yep." Scott was processing it. "So, I guess we're back together again." Kim nodded. "You sure that wasn't just a one-time fling?" Scott asked. Kim looked at him. "Yeah, I'm sure alright. You're mine alright? You better not forget that. If any other girl flirts with you, I'll bash her head in!" Scott gulped. "Anything else?" Kim looked at him. "Try to be less of an idiot."
Scott didn't seem to mind that request. "Will do." Kim glared at him. "I just can't stay mad at you, Pilgrim. Your charm is as addictive as it is dangerous." Pilgrim looked at her. "The same can be said about you." Kim was flustered. "Oh, shut it! You damn flatterer..." Over and over again, Kim found herself drawn to him; why exactly?
She doesn't know but there are worse people to be around. Whether or not this will be a repeat of before is anyone's guess at this point. She's drawn to him, and it seems he is also fond of her. Maybe it is for the best, or maybe it isn't. Kim's prepared either way. Either way, she hasn't felt this happy in a while and is glad to be his again.
