Work Text:

“You're sure you just want to stand by and watch?“

The boy at the edge of the rink who I still can't believe is my boyfriend turns to me, eyes half-lidded as though he was bored. “No, I'm good. Not looking to fall into a frozen lake today.“

I can't help it. "Right.“

Keith looks confused for a moment. "What do you mean right? It's true!"

“Just say you've never ice skates before.“ I grin, watching his eyes narrow in annoyance through the puff of my condenced breath. "I won't blame you”

"I am a highly ranked paladin, I'm pretty sure I can ice skate." Keith huffed, crossing his arms as I laughed slightly at him from the rink.

"Oh, yeah?"

"Yeah." He deadpanned, eyes narrowed. "Yeah, I do."

“That's perfect actually Because I just so happen to have an extra pair of skates in my bag, in your size.“

“How convenient. Now I won't have to go and get my own."

“I'll be on the ice whenever you're ready.“ I grin slyly, unable to suppress the mischief in my smirk. “You can skate out to me.“

“Of course." He says, trudging through the snow, looking rather amused with himself as he successfully put on the skates, tying them nearly as he walked confidently out to the edge of the rink...

Stumbles, trips, and falls back into the snow and lets out a little yelp as I drift gracefully across the ice.

"What was that about easy?" I recall you saying something similar to "How hard could it be?"

"Shut up."

It takes everything I have not to openly laugh at him. "Need some help getting back on your feet? "

He glares at me like a black cat who missed an easy jump and fell into a bat of water. "That's what the railings here for, I'm good."

"I can teach you if you want.“ I shrug, smirking to myself.

"I don't need your pity! “ He shouts as he scoots himself along the railing with his legs out in a V, feet scrabbling for purchase on the ice.

“I think you might," I confess, coming to a hockey stop next to him as he glares at me. “I mean, no, definitely keep on doing what you're doing."

"When I get out there you're getting tackled.“ The black-haired boy growls, contemplating for a moment before adding “Full speed.“

“So in a few weeks then?" I tease, skating in small circles around the rink and watching him fall multiple times on his back.

He crashes into the railing and slips again as he attempts to rise from his most recent fall, and I slowly stop in front of him. “Harder than you thought huh?"

“Of course not." He murmurs, " I assessed the difficulty of this activity perfectly I just wasn't doing a self-analysis.“

"What a nerdy way to say you like watching me skate.“

"I-”

My hand practically offers itself, and he looks up at me in defeat as he takes it, slowly slipping up into standing in a shaky V posture again.

“Okay, no." I laugh, letting go of it. His hands for a second. "We're not doing that. Straighten your legs a little.“

He does as instructed, but not without complaint and I have his shoulders as I watch his eyes dart down to his skates, we're still standing in one spot though.

The next step is to get him moving.

“Now usually there's a granny cart for beginners.“ I state, trying not to sound smug as he puffs in offense at even entertaining the idea of a granny cart for him.

“I'm just saying." I defend, swiveling around to skate backward as he glares at nothing, scrambling on his feet.

It takes him a good few tries to get up on his feet, but we get there after a considerable amount of time.

Keith slides slowly, shakily, forward.

"See?" I laugh, waiting with my hands just within reach if his own as he pushes off with his left foot and slides clumsily forward. "You're a natural!"

He smirks, seemingly more from the thrill of skating than the comment, and I skate next to him, backward so I can look at his face.

He says nothing, but somehow the silence and laughing that occasionally bubbles from his lips speaks.

We're about three minutes into his proper skating before he turns, and suddenly I'm skating directly into his chest, knocking the both of us over backward.

"Hey, that's dangerous! You could've lost a finger!" I scold, more startled than actually annoyed.

Keith chuckles, looking down at me as he curls his posture so we're practically eye to eye, the upside-down man in my view smirking at me as I ramble on about ice skating safety.

"Sorry." He laughs, pressing his cold gloves to my cheeks and tilting my head up to parallel his.

I feel a press of cool lips on my forehead and let out a startled little Eep-ing noise, which only makes him chuckle. He does it once more and my cheeks warm ever so slightly. A chemical reaction obviously, not anything else.

"If you're gonna kiss me do it properly." I huff, attempting to keep my composure.

"Double sorry." He jokes, swirling me around so my knees are facing him, and he has proper access to my face. "Let me try again."

Before I can quip something back, my face is gently pulled in, and I feel the cool bite of his lips on the warmth of my own.

He pulls away first, but it's for a good minute or two that we're sitting on the ice as the slush permeates our clothes.

“Now get off me, my snow pants are gonna be soaked." He grumbled, softly pushing me back as I stood and pulled him up with a bit more force than intended.

The cold bites at my cheeks and there's slush staining both of our pants, but I couldn't be happier.

We're laughing like children and snow starts to fall.

The cold bites at my cheeks and there's slush staining both of our pants, but I couldn't be happier.

Swirling in circles on an ice rink with my boyfriend.

Notes:

I'm sorry if he's out of character, I've never watched Voltron.
