My Best Enemy is You

Summary:

Seungmin was not crazy. He really wasn't.

And, if you stop to think about it, it wasn't really that absurd. Many people have met their significant other on dating apps, and sure, Twitter wasn't exactly a dating app, but it was an app where you could meet people so technically what Seungmin had going on was not as insane as his friends were making it to be.

OR

In which Seungmin ignores the whole “don’t trust strangers in the internet” thing, falls in love with his internet bestie and gets his world turned upside down.

Notes:

Hi everyone and welcome to my first seungin fic! I can’t believe I’ve never written about them before but anyways, I really hope you guys enjoy reading this just as much as I enjoyed writing it but before we start I have a few warnings:

- English is not my first language so I apologize for any grammar mistakes
- there’re mentions of abusive parents and depression so if that makes you uncomfortable I’d advise you to stop here
- seungin are photocard collectors so they’ll be using collector terms and I’ll explain each one of them at the end notes of the chapters
- and, last but not least, please don’t post my work on any other website/app, thank you and happy reading ❤️

Chapter 1: He was my best friend and that was the worst part

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Seungmin was not crazy. He really wasn't. He was perfectly sane — more sane than many of his friends in his humble opinion.

He was also not a hopeless romantic, nor would he do something stupid for the sake of not being single.

And, if you stop to think about it, it wasn't really that absurd. Many people have met their significant other on dating apps, and sure, Twitter wasn't exactly a dating app, but it was an app where you could meet people so technically what Seungmin had going on was not as insane as his friends were making it to be.

His name was Innie — technically, that wasn't his real name, that was his nickname on Twitter, Seungmin didn't know his real name, just like Innie didn't know Seungmin’s real name, and yes Seungmin knew how weird that was. They had been talking for over an year then, both of them were completely obsessed with Day6 and collected Wonpil photocards — Innie collected the other members too, which Seungmin thought was amazing considering he also collected all members of Girls’ Generation.

They hit off almost instantly, talking about everything and nothing, and Seungmin found comfort in Innie that he had never found in anyone else. Innie just felt right , like a missing piece of a puzzle Seungmin didn’t even know was incomplete. They fit perfectly together and it was borderline uncanny how well they could read each other, ever since their first interaction.

Sometimes, Seungmin would catch himself thinking about that story Hyunjin told him one night, about Plato’s theory on soulmates — people were born with four arms, four legs and two faces, but Zeus had split them in half and now  all humans are fated to walk the Earth searching for their other half.

He couldn’t help but wonder if he had found his.

And again, Seungmin was very aware of how insane it sounded.

He knew all about how dangerous the internet could be, that you shouldn’t trust anyone you meet there so easily, let alone fall in love with them.

He knew all of that, and he had been told again and again that it was impossible for him to actually fall in love with someone he had never met — you can’t be in love when you know nothing about him, Minho would say every time he would catch Seungmin smiling at his cellphone’s screen.

But was that really the truth?

Sure, Seungmin had never seen Innie in real life, he didn't know what Innie looked like, his real name or what he did for a living, and if they happened to bump into each other one day, Seungmin probably wouldn't recognise him. But Seungmin knew what mattered. He knew Innie’s fears, his secrets, his dreams, knew how he took his coffee and his favorite snacks. He was the one who spent hours on call with Innie, listening to him vent about his family and he was the one Innie would turn to when the thoughts in his head became too much.

It was crazy, Seungmin knew that, and maybe he was going to have his heart broken — and yet, he couldn’t help it.

He had fallen in love, completely, undeniably, and he didn’t regret one bit.

Especially because he knew the feeling was mutual.

Now, Seungmin can be a little delusional sometimes — he’s pretty sure all kpop fans have that one bit of delusion mixed up in their brain’s chemistry — but this isn’t it, he has proof, unquestionable evidence, that Innie had fallen just as deep, if not more, than he did.

Innie had always flirted with him, since their very first interaction, but for all his playful flirting he could be extremely honest sometimes — like when he would call Seungmin late at night because he needed someone and Seungmin was the only one who truly understood him, or when he would ask Seungmin not to hang up so they could fall asleep together, breathing in sync. And Seungmin didn’t have to be a genius to know that friends didn’t act the way they did, the too often ‘I love you’s, the ‘no one knows me like you do’, how Innie would always say that he wished it was Seungmin instead whoever his parents forced him to go on a blind date with, or that one time he actually said he would marry him in a heartbeat.

It was illogical, absurd, ridiculous even, but it was real . And perhaps that was all that mattered.

Innie was perfect for him, so perfect that he could even do the impossible — make Seungmin forget about his arch nemesis, also known as Yang Jeongin.

Seungmin had been working as a lawyer for Yang & Choi Law Firm for over five years then and he had never seen someone so disorganized and loud as Jeongin. It felt like his sole purpose in life was to be the epitome of a bad employee, he always managed to do the exact opposite of what he was supposed to do, regardless of the difficulty of the task.

At that point, Seungmin was pretty sure Jeongin was doing it on purpose to annoy him — he had somehow found out everything Seungmin hates and decided to become the embodiment of all of that. A living, breathing, nightmare personally designed to ruin his days.

Now, don't get him wrong, Seungmin had always known that annoying people exist and that in order to be successful, especially in his line of work, he needed to learn how to deal with them, how to coexist peacefully, but Jeongin was just too much.

It wasn't just his manners, Seungmin could've put up with that, it was his whole personality — rich kid who didn't even had to lift a finger to score a job at Seoul's best law firm and would probably inherit it from his father, while normal people like Seungmin suffered every day to have a glimpse of the privilege he took for granted — that really bothered Seungmin.

It was so unfair it made him sick, and Jeongin didn't even bother to seem embarrassed about it, he acted like it was perfectly natural, as if he didn't steal the job from someone more deserving than him.

It infuriated Seungmin. Every time he would see Jeongin playing on his phone while he was supposed to be working, or when he would eat chips in the office and spread crumbs everywhere — including Seungmin’s table because of course he would manage to do that — Seungmin would feel his blood boil.

The only person who could save him from the bad moods Jeongin always put him in was Innie.

Minnie:

And thanks

But as much as I would love to see him get his ass kicked

Innie:

Minnie:

Probably the same day you stop shamelessly flirting with me

Innie:

You're gonna have to accept my hand in marriage for that

Minnie:

You're insufferable

Innie:

You love me

Seungmin put his phone down, leaning against the vending machine as he felt his heart do some weird acrobatics inside his chest — if Innie kept acting like that, he might actually have a heart attack.

“What are you smiling at?” A voice asked, and just like that, the balloon of joy slowly growing in Seungmin's chest popped, all the happiness he had gained from his conversation with Innie gone in the blink of an eye.

“What do you want Jeongin?”

“I’m just getting some snacks,” then, lower, as if he didn't mean for Seungmin to hear him, “ jezz , who put that stick up your ass?”

Seungmin exhaled deeply, counting to three and reminding himself of all of the reasons he shouldn't kill Jeongin — everything you sacrificed to get here would be for nothing, you'll never see your family again, you'll never talk to Innie again, you'll never get to tell Innie how you feel — even though the prospect of never having to hear his annoying remarks again seemed very appealing.

"What are you doing here anyways?” Seungmin asked, “Aren’t you supposed to be working on Mister Cha’s file? You know you can't keep asking Yuna to do your work for you.”

Jeongin huffed.

“Relax, I’m just taking a break, can’t stand looking at all those numbers anymore.”

“If you can’t stand your work, maybe you should quit.” Seungmin muttered under his breath.

“Bet you’d love that.”

Seungmin sighed — god how can he be so annoying? — but before he could say anything Jeongin’s hands were on his shoulders, gently pushing him aside.

“Wh-what are you…?”

“I want to buy something, you’re on the way.” He said simply, his hands lingering before he turned his attention to the vending machine.

Seungmin had to take a moment to get his shit together — his heart should definitely not be beating so fast, what the hell was wrong with him?  — reeling with the strange feeling Jeongin’s touch triggered. Thankfully, Jeongin didn’t seem to be paying attention to him, he just knew he would never hear the end of it if the younger realised what he'd caused.

Seungmin cleared his throat, suddenly needing to get away from Jeongin as soon as possible.

“Don't waste too much time, I'm not staying after hours because of you again.” He shot over his shoulder as he made a beeline for the door.

“Why do you hate me so much?” The younger asked before he could step out of the break room.

Seungmin huffed, feeling his eyes do a 360 inside his skull.

“Just because you're the boss’ kid doesn't mean I have to pretend to like you like everyone else does.” He glanced back at Jeongin and chose to ignore how he visibly winced at his words — it wasn't like he was lying, it was obvious that Jeongin's behavior bothered their colleagues as well, however, unlike Seungmin, they were more worried about getting in their boss good graces and would gladly pretend to be friends with him only to talk about him behind his back.

“I know,” Jeongin said after a pause, “but you don't have to be so obvious about it.”

Weird. Seungmin was expecting something like anger, or maybe annoyance, but instead, Jeongin’s voice sounded… hollow, almost sad.

And just like that, a feeling awfully similar to guilt washed over Seungmin, swirling inside his chest and squeezing his heart before he could shake it off.

But no, it couldn't be guilt, that would imply he did something wrong, which he didn't, he simply pointed out a known fact. It must've been… pity, yes, that made more sense.

Still, something about the way Jeongin was looking at him made him feel almost sick. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Jeongin annoys him, he bites back, Jeongin annoys him some more and that's how it goes, a never ending bickering. Jeongin is not supposed to look sad, and Seungmin is definitely not supposed to feel… whatever this is.

God, maybe he should let Innie get rid of Jeongin for him.

The first time Seungmin laid his eyes on Jeongin, the first word that crossed his mind was pretty . Then, someone pointed out something funny, making Jeongin smile and he felt his heart skip a beat or two. No, scratch that, pretty was an understatement actually Seungmin was pretty sure there weren't enough words in the Korean language — or in any language for that matter — to describe Jeongin’s beauty, especially when he looked like that, cute dimples adorning his cheeks, eyes crinkling with laughter.

He looked like an angel.

Seungmin knew he was downbad when his brain started to wax poetically about someone's looks. Usually, he wouldn't really care about appearances, sure, he can appreciate someone's beauty but that's not what really matters to him — beauty can't make up for a shitty personality, for instance, Seungmin learned that the hard way.

Jeongin picked the table right next to him and smiled at Seungmin as soon as he noticed him staring pathetically at him — not his brightest moment — making his cheeks burn.

Seungmin thought he heard him say something like “cute” but it might have been his lovestruck brain playing games with him.

However, things just went downhill from there.

It started the very next day. Jeongin was late, and not just the classic ten or fifteen minutes late, which could be understandable depending on the circumstances, no, he was a whole hour late — sixty fucking minutes . That was already enough to rub Seungmin the wrong way, but what really bothered him was the fact that nobody said anything about it. Not their supervisor, not the person in charge of training Jeongin, not their colleagues, nobody. They just ignored it, as if it hadn't happened at all.

It reminded Seungmin of that time his grandma got sick and he had to buy her some medicine, resulting in him being 5 minutes late. He remembered how mad his boss had gotten, even after he explained his reasons, claiming it was unacceptable. But with Jeongin, no one batted an eye.

At first, Seungmin thought that maybe they had felt sorry for Jeongin, maybe he had a decent excuse for being late, who knows, his dog might have died or something, maybe Seungmin was being too hard on him, projecting his own expectations on the youngest — his friends always said he ought to be more flexible.

But it kept happening. Every fucking day. It was like he was doing it on purpose.

And it wasn't just the lateness or complete disregard for their work schedule, he kept making mistakes — mixing up files and client names, breaking things in the office, forgetting about trial dates and even accidentally rebooting the entire system, therefore deleting many important files.

It was a mess, he was a mess, a walking problem, and still nobody complained, nobody reprimanded him. Worse, they were actually nice to him, buying him snacks and inviting him to happy hour and other outings.

Seungmin was puzzled, perplexed even, no matter how much he mulled over it he couldn't figure out why everyone acted as if what Jeongin  was doing was okay.

Then, one day, it all clicked into place.

He was at the terrace, taking a break after a particularly uncomfortable meeting with a client, when he overheard two of his coworkers talking about Jeongin's latest mistake.

“... Can you believe he managed to break the printer again ?” Seonghwa was saying. “I mean, is it really that hard to copy documents?”

“Be careful, what if someone hears you?” Wooyoung replied.

“So what if they hear me? They can't fire me for talking shit about the boss’ kid, that's illegal.”

Oh.

Oh.

It all made sense then, it all made so much fucking sense. Of course he was the boss’ kid, how did Seungmin never think of that before? His family name was literally in their company’s name.

Seungmin had never felt so stupid in entire life.

And he had never, ever , hated anyone the way he hated Yang Jeongin.

-

“I wish you were here.” Innie whispered from the other side of the line, sniffling.

Me too , Seungmin wanted to say, I wish I could hold you in my arms and brush the tears off your face, wish I could kiss you until you forget all the cruel things they said to you.

“Same.” He said instead, because that would be too dramatic, because even though he was sure his feelings weren’t unrequited, that insecure part of him was still too afraid to say it out loud.

It was one of those nights, Innie called him out of nowhere, saying he needed him. Seungmin didn’t ask, he never did, just picked up the phone and tried his best to comfort his friend. Usually, they didn’t talk much during these calls, that wasn’t what Innie wanted, he wanted companionship, someone to scare the loneliness away.

So they would stay in comfortable silence, Seungmin would listen to him cry until his tears dried out, until exhaustion caught up to him, and they would fall asleep together. Seungmin wasn’t entirely sure what was the reason behind Innie’s suffering, only that it had something to do with his parents, and, even though he could be curious sometimes, he never felt the need to ask — it wasn’t his business, if Innie ever wanted him to know, he would tell him, and even if he wished to keep it a secret forever, Seungmin wouldn’t mind.

“I can’t wait to meet you,” Innie said after a beat, “maybe we should run away together, buy a house by the beach, away from… all of this.”

“I don’t think I can afford that.”

“I can,” he went on, like he meant it, “I’ll sell my clothes, my wardrobe it’s probably worth at least a few months of rent, we’ll figure it out after that.”

“You love your clothes, Innie, you wouldn’t just sell them all like that.”

“I would for you.”

It was too honest, too genuine, like he didn’t even have to think twice. Seungmin could hear his own heartbeat, his cheeks burning, and he… he couldn't cope with that, it was one thing when Innie confessed his undying love through text messages, it was entirely different when Seungmin heard him say it, when he could notice the lack of hesitation in his voice, the truthness behind it.

“Minnie?” Innie called, his tone almost worried.

“It’s late,” he murmured, and, so Innie wouldn’t misinterpret his inability to cope with his feelings with rejection, added “go to sleep baby, I’ll stay here until you do.”

-

“Are you excited for tomorrow?” Hyunjin asked, glancing at Seungmin over his glass of wine.

It was the night before the pop up, only a couple hours before Seungmin met his one and only and, as they always did on Friday nights, Seungmin and his friends had gathered at Changbin and Felix’s house to get drunk, or, in Seungmin's case, babysit everyone — the cons of being the responsible one.

“Is that even a real question?” Seungmin shot back, taking a sip of his soda. “I've been waiting for this for ages.”

“You met him like yesterday.” Minho pointed out from where he was perched on the couch like a cat, not even bothering to hide the disapproving look on his face.

“It's an expression, Min.”

“When he kidnaps you, don't come asking me for ransom.”

“As if I would ask your broke ass for anything,” Seungmin retorted, “even if you were right about Innie — which you aren't — you’d be the last person I'd call,” he turned to Changbin, who was half passed out on the carpet next to him, “I’d much rather ask Changbin for help, you’d pay ransom for me right Binnie?”

The older man hummed in agreement and gave him a thumbs up.

“Hey!” Felix called out, kicking him in the shin. “Don't take advantage of my boyfriend when he's drunk.”

“Can we stop talking about Seungmin getting kidnapped?” Chan pleaded, clearly taking their jokes way too seriously.

“Calm down grandpa, Minho is just being annoying .” Seungmin told him.

“I'm being realistic .” Minho argued. “We don't know-”

“Babe, please stop.” Hyunjin cut his boyfriend off, giving him his best puppy eyes. “Seungminnie is a grown up now, he can take care of himself.”

Minho made a frustrated noise, but relented, and Seungmin mouthed a silent thanks to Hyunjin, who smiled in return.

“Are you really going to tell him you like him?” Felix asked.

“I think so, yeah.”

Seungmin had never been the brave one, had never confessed his feelings to anyone, actually, opting to wait for the other person to take the lead — which rarely happened — but he was so sure about Innie that he was willing to take a risk this time.

“Aren't you scared of being rejected?”

“Normally I would be.” He admitted. “But it's different this time, it's mutual, I know it.”

“You spent too much time with Jinnie,” Minho said, “his delusion rubbed in on you.”

Seungmin rolled his eyes, repressing the sudden need to throw something at the oldest — he really didn't get why Minho was so adamant on changing his mind about Innie.

“Hey! I'm not delusional!” Hyunjin smacked his boyfriend’s shoulder and then pointed out, “I was right about you.”

“My crush on you was obvious,” Minho shot back, “I literally confessed a thousand times-”

Seungmin tuned out the couple's classic banter, turning his attention back to Felix.

“I know how it sounds,” he went on, “but the way he talks to me, the way he acts, there's nothing friendly about it.”

“I know, Seungminnie,” Felix said with a smile, “and I fully support you, just be careful not to get hurt.”

Seungmin smiled back. Unlike his brother, Felix had always been supportive of his relationship with Innie, maybe it's because he had also met his significant other through unconventional ways — his bakery’s delivery app of all places — or because he had also had a taste of Minho's disapprovement, but the younger Lee had always been on his side.

“I won't Lixie.” Seungmin assured his friend.

It wasn't a lie, he truly believed that — Innie would never, ever hurt him.

Innie:

Nooo

Flowers are cute

Romantic

And it's not like I'll bring a huge bouquet with me

Just enough for you to recognise me

Minnie:

Okay…

-

Seungmin didn't usually worry about his own appearance. Sure, he was careful about the clothes he wears, dressing appropriately for the occasion, but he had long come in terms with the fact that he would never be as pretty as his friends or the people he sees on TV, he was… average. And that was okay.

Normally, he didn't spend too long getting ready, and he most definitely didn't spend three hours standing in front of the mirror, trying on every single outfit he had.

“I think you're overthinking all of this.” Hyunjin commented from where he was lounging in Seungmin’s bed, his head hanging upside down on the edge — Seungmin couldn't fathom how he wasn't feeling sick. “If he put up with you until now I don't think your awful fashion sense is going to scare him away. I mean, isn't he supposed to be your soulmate or something?”

“I just want to look… pretty.” Seungmin murmured, petulant.

“Seungminnie, you are pretty.” Hyunjin said and then added when Seungmin opened his mouth to argue. “You are , don't let those silly voices in your head tell you otherwise.”

Hyunjin sat up suddenly, so fast Seungmin  wondered how he didn't get dizzy, and started going through the pile of clothes on the bed. He picked up an oversized Day6 hoodie he had gotten Seungmin for his birthday and a pair of jeans.

“Here, these make you look cute,” he offered him the hoodie, “and these make you look hot,” he gave him the jeans, “it's the perfect combination.”

Seungmin blushed, but took the clothes anyway.

“Do you know what you're going to tell him?” Hyunjin asked.

“What do you mean?”

“You know, how you're going to confess.” He elaborated.

“Oh.”

Seungmin did not think about that, in fact, he was trying his best not to think about it.

On most days, Seungmin would plan everything, from the clothes he wears to the dishes he eats. He loved it, planning, making lists, organizing his life so everything will go exactly as he wanted.

It was perhaps one of his favorite things, and he didn't know how to function any other way.

Which was why he was currently in the brink of a mental breakdown.

He had thought it would be okay to improvise, it was just one day, it couldn't be that hard.

It shouldn't be.

Even if he was about to confess his undying love — which he recently realized was scarier than he thought it would be —  this was Innie, Innie, who'd seen him at his lowest and never judged him for it, Innie, who knew him inside out and still stuck with him, despite all his flaws.

So, yeah, he shouldn't be so worried.

And yet.

All the cells in his body were telling him something was wrong. He could almost feel it, a prickling sensation just at the edge of his subconscious, like a warning, an ominous sign that everything he held dear was about to slip through his fingers.

It reminded him of a trusting game he once played with his friends, in which you close your eyes and let your body fall, waiting for the others to catch you. Though, this time, everything was telling him that there would be no one to stop his fall.

“You’ll be okay.” Hyunjin murmured, sensing his anxiety, he squeezed his shoulder and gave him a reassuring smile.

“I know…” Seungmin said half heartedly.

“I'm serious,” the older man insisted, “I'm pretty sure this guy likes you, maybe he's not in love with you but there's at least something going on.” He took Seungmin’s hand in his to stop him from fidgeting. “Besides, even if I'm wrong — which I rarely am — we will always be here for you, no matter what.”

Seungmin hummed and nodded, squeezing his friend’s hand in return.

Hyunjin was right, there was nothing to worry about.

-

The pop up was packed with fans.

Seungmin wasn't surprised, it was the opening day after all, but it did make him a little bit self conscious — was he really going to confess his love in such a crowded place? What if Innie rejected him? Being humiliated like that in front of all those people seemed like something straight out of his worst nightmares.

Don't overthink it, it's gonna be fine , a voice that sounded suspiciously like Hyunjin echoed in his mind.

Right. Yes. Everything was going to be okay, Innie wasn't going to reject him, everything would be perfectly fine-

Looking back, Seungmin would say that this was probably the moment everything went wrong. The fall of the first domino that triggered the chain reaction that turned his life upside down.

As he rounded the corner, Seungmin’s eyes were immediately drawn to a familiar figure.

His first thought was:

“Of course he's here. Of course he had to ruin another good thing in my life, that's all he does.”

And then his eyes glanced down and he saw it —half a dozen hoary stock flowers carefully wrapped around light purple cellophane, tied together with a bow. It was beautiful, a stark contrast with the hideous reality it carried.

The epiphany hit him with such force that Seungmin felt all the air flee his lungs, leaving him bereft and reeling.

It was a joke, it had to be. There were hidden cameras somewhere and soon someone was going to jump from behind one of the bushes and ask him how it felt to have his world tilted on its axis.

It had to be a joke, because there was no way that the person Seungmin loved, the one who knew all his weaknesses and flaws, was the same person that made him want to commit murder on a daily basis.

A few feet away from him, smiling like a fool, stood none other than Yang Jeongin.

For a moment, Seungmin wondered if this had been all an elaborate prank. If Jeongin had somehow found out about his collector account and had created a whole personality just to play with his feelings. But no, Jeongin didn't have even half of the brain cells necessary to pull out something like that.

It had all been Seungmin’s fault. Seungmin  and his stupid, needy heart.

Pathetic. Foolish. Idiot. The words played in repeat inside his mind like a broken record as Seungmin watched the fantasy his brain had conjured fade away, leaving him with the cold, hard truth.

It wasn't real. Nothing that had happened between him and Innie — between him and Jeongin had been real. All the flirting, the late night talks, the stupid ‘I love you's , it was all just a joke to Jeongin, he probably did that with everyone he met online — it was just like him, playing with other people’s hearts for fun , completely disregarding the other person’s feelings.

Seungmin wasn't special to him, he wasn't his soulmate, he was just another fool for him to play with, soon to be discarded.

Seungmin could see it, playing before his eyes like a movie, the hell Jeongin was going to put him through once he found out who he was. Jeongin knew everything now, all his secrets, his weaknesses, it would be so, so easy to truly turn his life into a nightmare. If he thought his current situation was bad enough, it was nothing compared to what would happen if Jeongin knew he was Minnie .

He couldn't let that happen.

Typing a quick excuse to their chat, Seungmin turned on his heels and walked away, leaving the fairytale his mind had conceived behind.
