Chapter Text
„Kuramochi-senpai, can I ask you a question?”
“You just did, you idiot.” Kuramochi answered in an especially bored tone without even looking away from the screen. He had been playing with the same game for the past two hours – and judging by his expression he might still be the on same level, Eijun thought – but Eijun really, really needed to know something. And the only person who could possibly give him a proper answer would probably only be Kuramochi. Really, no one else came to his mind.
Which was kind of weird.
“Kuramochi-senpai,” He addressed the older boy while he sat down next to him, eagerly glaring at him. He knew that his roommate would quickly become irritated by his intense stare but that was exactly what he aimed for. “I have a question about Miyuki-senpai.”
“Uhh, no.”
“What? Why?” Eijun asked in surprise. If he won’t get his answers from Kuramochi then he was completely lost.
“Because I’m angry at him and I don’t want to be reminded of it.”
Eijun furrowed his brows. Well, right before practice Miyuki did tease a bit the shortstop in the cafeteria in front of the whole team, but that was quite usual for the two of them.
“Please, Kuramochi-senpai, you would save my life with this!”
“Why even are you asking me?” Kuramochi snapped back. “Go ask him. He’s an absolute nightmare but he won’t eat you alive.”
Eijun grunted and laid back on his back. He hid his face behind his hands and wailed in agony. Next to him his roommate – who had enough of the first-year’s idiocy and was now clearly fed up with it – sighed loudly and paused the game.
“Alright! What is it?” He asked and Eijun began smiling behind his hands. He quickly sat back up to face the other boy.
“It’s just… well… do you know whether Miyuki-senpai is seeing someone currently?”
Kuramochi stared at him for a whole minute. Then he used one of his wresting moves on Eijun, holding him firmly on the floor.
“Sawamura, you better explain me quickly why you want to know that.”
“It’s… umpf… it’s nothing.” He managed to mumble out somehow under Kuramochi’s tight grip. Fortunately he suspected that his roommate would ask him that and he was ready with an answer. “One of my classmates asked me to find it out…”
“Oh?” Kuramochi loosened his grip a little and Eijun was glad to be able to breathe properly again. However, a clench inside his chest was still causing him pain, but he was strangely familiar with that by now. Ever since he realized how he feels towards that damn Miyuki Kazuya.
“So?” He asked quietly, eager to get an answer. Please let him be single, he prayed silently.
Kuramochi tilted his head and looked back at the screen, furrowing his eyebrows a bit. Eijun gulped and braced himself.
“I can’t believe someone is interested in him.” The older boy wondered aloud. “I mean, your friend must have never met him, otherwise they would know what a shitty personality that guy has…”
“Yeah, sort of like that.” Eijun laughed awkwardly and put his hand behind his head, brushing his hair. He was getting more and more nervous, and he needed to be especially careful because Kuramochi was damn good at observing things, and if he did something suspicious – even a smallest change in his expression would be enough – and he would be busted quickly. And Eijun didn’t want to hear his roommate laughing at him for how he feels, and for whom he has fallen for…
“Well, Sawamura… Honestly, that guy probably has more secrets than the whole team altogether, but I don’t think that he would be dating anyone… But if you’re really okay with destroying your classmate’s happiness than you can ask that idiot himself.”
Kuramochi turned back to his video game and Eijun slowly stood up. He felt more confident now that he could fooled his roommate that easily and he thought that maybe his luck would last for a bit longer. He grabbed his jacket and before he left the small dorm room he smiled back.
“Thank you, Kuramochi-senpai.”
He had already closed the door when Kuramochi mumbled to himself, all the while furiously pushing the buttons on his controller: “Don’t blame me later, Sawamura. I did warn you.”
--
Eijun smiled broadly when he spotted the cause of his problems standing next to the vending machine. He really was lucky. Maybe it wasn’t a crazy idea to ask him right now.
It was Miyuki who noticed him first, and Eijun saw his grin clearly under the lamp’s light.
“Yo, Sawamura. You better not be here to go running this late.”
Eijun walked closer to him. He couldn’t stop smiling, so he decided to laugh aloud like the other boy said something funny.
“Hahaa, what are you talking about, Miyuki Kazuya…”
Miyuki kept glaring at him while he slipped from his drink. Eijun stopped about five feet away from him. It was dangerous enough to be this close, he thought.
“So? Having troubles with sleeping?” Miyuki asked and Eijun shook his head. Damn, he really was nervous, and he couldn’t find the confidence he felt before.
He should just get over with this quickly.
“Umm, Miyuki-senpai,” He knew he made a mistake when the other boy’s eyes widened in surprise at his formal addressing. Eijun hadn’t called him like that since… who knows. Damn it. “I… Umm… I have something to ask. For a friend.”
“Yeah?” The catcher obviously tried not to smile. Eijun found his expression kind of… cute. Kuramochi was right. He really was an absolute nightmare. “And what would that be?”
“Well… They would like to know whether you’re with someone currently… I mean… Are you dating anyone?”
This time Miyuki didn’t tried to hide his smile. His characteristic grin took over his former expression and he stepped closer to Eijun, who became more and more nervous.
“Oh? So I have a secret admirer? Hmm, interesting…” He looked so smug Eijun almost rolled his eyes at him. “And? Are they too afraid of asking me out?”
“Umm, I guess…” Eijun knew that he probably should end the conversation soon when Miyuki took another step and cheekily grinned at the other boy. Damn it all. “Just answer it.”
“Hmm~, I’m sorry that I have to disappoint them.” His words caused another painful feeling inside Eijun, clenching his chest, but he tried his best not to show it. Relax, relax. He can’t know how I feel about this. Then Miyuki looked away and his grin faded, a gentle kind of smile took over its place. Eijun couldn’t take his eyes off him. “I’m not seeing anyone, but right now baseball is my top priority. I spend almost all my time on the field, so…”
“Oh.” Eijun had to blink a couple times. He had to act like he was disappointed, he reminded himself quickly, because ‘his classmate’ wouldn’t get a chance to date him. But he felt so incredibly happy.
Miyuki turned his attention back to him, and playfully hit the other boy’s shoulder before he turned around and walked away. He lazily waved with his hand while he said “I hope I didn’t break their heart too much. Go to sleep, Sawamura.”
Eijun only grunted quietly in return. When Miyuki got out of his sight he allowed himself a victory-dance.
