Work Text:
The split second of a rumbling engine was his only warning before the ship lurched forward.
A cacophony of shouts and screams sounded around him as he gripped tightly on the flagpole, eyes wide as he couldn't tear his gaze away from Mratyn the moment his eyes snapped towards him.
"Lieutenant, what are you doing?!!" Renrat shouted. Shock, fear, and sorrow swirled in his gut. Harder than any drink he had.
Every millisecond, Mratyn was getting further and further away as he held onto the moving ratmobile, soaring through the sky, back towards the docks as he saluted with a closed eye smile.
"See you later Captain! It's been a pleasure!"
He could barely hear him over the roaring engine, the crashing waves, and the shouting.
But he was all he could focus on as his heart clenched.
No.
No.
Don't leave me alone too.
"Lieutenant!!" He screamed, scrambling forwards, voice hoarse as he scrapped his knees on the dock of La Sangria.
His legs have grown accustomed to the land but still, he crawled towards the precarious edge, gripping tightly at the edge to not be washed away.
Desperately trying to keep the Lieutenant in his eyes as the waves lapped around him mockingly while he got further and further away.
Yet still, he was smiling.
Opening his single eye, gaze soft and misty.
And he could see despite the growing distance.
"Hopefully this story will be a little bit more entertaining than the ones you usually tell" His teasing voice said, eye crinkling in delight that promised that fond mischief.
But he won't be able to see that anymore.
Feel that anymore.
"Give 'em a show, Jaque"
He ended his salute with a smile as the fog started to consume him. Eye misting with the setting sun.
His sight on him was getting more blurry as he gripped tightly on the edge.
Or was it his eyes?
He couldn't.
He couldn't give them a show anymore.
Not when his heart couldn't take it any longer.
Not without him.
"Mratyn..."
That single word left his lips, disappearing in the air just like the sight of his dear Lieutenant.
No, his dear friend.
He swore he saw something sparkle in the air within the fog like a tiny star falling from that precious light blue sky.
But he couldn't see any longer.
For tears swelled in his eyes.
